LEE’S VIEW Hello and welcome to Station View for the run of pre-season games that we are now into. With visits from Hartlepool, Middlesborough, Darlington, Nostell and finally Field we have some great fixtures and three away ties against Knaresborough, Yorkshire Ams and Harrogate Town.

A lot has gone on over the summer as I am sure you are by now aware.

Firstly quite soon after the season ended the club was approached by Tadcaster Albion for the services of Billy Miller. Both Billy and I spent a long time discussing the move and when it finally looked like an offer was going to materialise I was approached by Nigel Corner and was offered the step up tot the managers role. It was never in any doubt that I would say yes to the club and continue my involvement here. I played here for three years and after a break came back as the management team and now enter my fourth year, so seven years in total, not too bad at this level of football.

I know Billy thought long and hard about leaving and the new challenge of getting a team promotion appealed to him and I amongst others wish him all the best in his new role, The job he did at the club was superb and finishing eighth in the Evostick, the highest for this club, is testament to his work ethic and managerial skills. Leaving with Billy is Richard Lawrence.

Richard was excellent for us, working behind the scenes, with stats, kits and balls etc, a lot of his work went unnoticed and I will miss him off the field. Jordan Armstrong, Adam Baker and Matt Heath have all joined Billy at Tadcaster and we wish them all the best.

Rob Youhill was offered a deal at Darlington and for a player to move up a level is fantastic and something all players should aim to achieve, we will look forward to seeing Robbie and Nathan Cartman pre-season, and I would expect both to get a warm reception. Malachi Farquason has also left to go to to university in Birmingham. He went with our best wishes.

One other person who has left his role is the Chairman Nigel Corner. I had numerous conversations with Nigel about his role and although he never went into too much detail of his resignation, I am sure the reasons must be very strong as his love for Harrogate Railway is second to none, I know it was a heart wrenching decision for him, and to this day I am still trying to change his mind! Nigel will still be around the ground I am sure and his work off the pitch has been superb. I know of all the people that have left, I believe that Nigel’s role will be the biggest hole to fill, and the club need to get the correct person as Chairman who can match the enthusiasm and energy that Nigel brought to the club.

So as you can tell, this season will be a rebuilding process both on and off the pitch, I think we need to ensure that at this time next season we are in the Evostick and we have built a foundation to build on. It will be a long process and one that will require patience and there will be ups and downs but I hope we can all stick together and do our best for this football club that we are the heart of.

My management team consists of Simon Wood who makes the step from player, to assistant manager, Simon hopes to combine the roles and aid me in the rebuilding process.

I have known Simon for many years, and the confidence I have in his coaching abilities as well as his opinions are high. He is not a ‘yes man’ and he will tell me when he disagrees. I am sure we will have arguments behind the scenes but we will always show a united front and do our very best. We have also added Steve Grime to the management team who comes in as Head of Development. Steve ran our reserves last year and will continue to do that but will also take training and have an influence in team selection. Finally we have Alex Farrell who comes in as Physio, he was recommended by Rachel Davis and we hope he has no involvement through the season and we are injury free!

We have had a trial day and also brought in a few players, I would expect us to have a good squad on August 15th and we will look at all players over the coming weeks and give them all a chance to showcase their talents. We are looking to improve the link with our Neighbours at Town and I have spoken to Simon Weaver on several occasions and he is very supportive of me. I appreciate that their is a rivalry between both sets of spectators and local bragging rights are important, I fully agree with this but we also need to realise that they can be a massive help to us and have been over the three years so we need to ensure that relationships are kept friendly and both sets of supporters realise the importance of the link. I will speak about individual players over the first few games, but at this point, several of them are impressing me greatly.

Thanks must go to Steve Thirkell who has tirelessly spent hours over the summer getting the pitch looking like it does, he has really got into his new role and has been helpful with the trail day etc, he is again part of my team as Groundsman and I will work with him throughout the season and help him wherever I can.

Finally I would like to mention David Shephard, commonly known as Shep, he is a quiet member of our team who goes about his business with little or no credit. He is the Football secretary and without him I don’t think a match would ever take place, he gives his opinion, and quite often its good! He is important to me and I have a lot of time for him, I believe he deserves more credit than he gets or that he would ever ask for, so buy him a beer when you see him!

Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.

The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone.

Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay. In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982.

Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round.

Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.

Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs.

The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.

A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.

Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.

Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history.

The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.

Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end.

Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round.

Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.

However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant.

Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them.

Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.

The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone.

In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.

2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.

Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season.

Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development.

A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team.

Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Alex joins Railway as the first team physio.

Fatlum Ibrahimi stepped up from our Junior Section and has raised a few eyebrows on the way. Keen in the tackle, can run all day has worked hard to maintain his presence in a tough midfield category.

Likes to chip in with the odd goal also.

Jason Mycoe has signed this season after previously being at Wakefield. The ex- Leeds United youngster can play as a centre back or as a midfielder and does chip in with the odd goal. Jason is likely to be an integral part of the squad.

Greg Kidd is an ex Oldham Athletic player and although been plagued with ankle injuries over the past couple of seasons, he has always been in and around the squad. A local player who always gives 100% and is a very useful squad member.

Thomas Goodwin is a young goalkeeper from Wigan, Tom become the second player to be contracted by Harrogate Railway when he joined from AFC Fylde U19s team. Playing in the Evo-stik League, Tom has taken the step in his stride. Commands his area well and has settled into the squad very quickly.

Dan Thirkell is the longest serving member of the current team having begun his career has a young eight year old with the junior section. Other than a break that saw him sign for ScarboroughDan has remained at Station View throughout, fiercely loyal he is a great team and club member who is currently in his prime. A great presence at centre half or right full back Thirkell remains a key member of the side.

Michael Morris Is into his third season for the Rail. Ever present except for when he’s missing, Mike is a hard working big hitting ball heading centre half. A proper little soldier.

Lawrance Hunter first played for Billy in 2009 having been released from the pro game, he is now in his second full season with us at Railway. A very versatile player he is comfortable playing in any position but has really impressed as a hard working full back capable of playing on either side.

Steve Bromley made the move to Station View last year after impressing for near neighbours Knaresborough FC. Steve is an out and out goal scorer with a proven record in the NCEL. A local police officer, extremely committed and always willing to learn Steve is a great team member and fully committed to the club.

Scott Manning a pacy winger signed from Gorleston FC who has moved into the area. He looks to be a great addition to the Railway squad.

Railway delighted with £1500 Grow the Game funding

The grant will help Harrogate Railway create a new under 11’s girls team and encourage more local people to get involved in the beautiful game. The funding will allow the club to purchase all the equipment needed to run a team, and ensure their coaches are trained to deliver age appropriate coaching.

Together with the The Premier League, The FA fund the Grow the Game scheme with the initiative being delivered by the Football Foundation, the nation’s largest sports charity. The programme is designed to increase participation in our national game by helping clubs to meet the essential costs of starting new teams.

The club will now start the search for a new coach to support the new team Caroline Hulme, Women and Girls Football Development Officer at West Riding County FA said: “It’s so inspiring to see a club like Railway developing girls football in Harrogate. It’s only early days for the new team, but I’m already really encouraged by what I’ve seen. The club has a great reputation, and we’re all confident that that Amanda Ford, Ray Green and Ian Wade will create a fantastic atmosphere for the girls to enjoy their football. If you’re looking to get involved in a coaching capacity, this is a really great opportunity.”

A Football Foundation Ambassador and a keen footballer himself, TV’s Ben Shephard said: “This funding, provided by the Premier League and The FA, is excellent news for Harrogate Railway. They deserve real credit for working with the Football Foundation and West Riding County FA to help secure the grant.

“Grow the Game funding makes a tangible difference, it helps to increase participation in the sport. It allows clubs at the lowest levels of the game to pay for things associated with starting new teams, like making sure their volunteer coaches can get qualified with FA coaching badges.”

Hartlepool United XI In 1920, the Football League formed a third division. This was based almost entirely in the south, as the new division was created by absorbing virtually the entire top division of the Southern League, with Grimsby Town the only northern representative. This was rectified the following season when a Third Division North was created, with Hartlepools one of the founder members.

Hartlepool recovered from a poor start to the 2013–14 season and by early spring they were making decent progress and looking to make a late play-off bid. However, a terrible run of form late in the season plunged them into the relegation battle, which they did not earn definite safety from until the penultimate match of the season. The club finished 19th that season, their lowest finish in 15 years.

An even worse start to the 2014/15 season resulted in Cooper resigning a few weeks into the campaign. Paul Murray replaced Cooper, only to be sacked just two months later, with the club six points adrift at the bottom of League Two, and having just suffered an FA Cup elimination at the hands of non-league Blyth Spartans.

Peter Harris bought the club from Ken Hodcroft in December 2014. Harris’s first decision was to appoint former Tranmere Rovers manager Ronnie Moore to the managers’ job.

While the takeover ultimately fell through and the club reverted to Hodcroft’s ownership, Moore’s appointment would prove to be a critical one.

By the start of 2015 Moore had seen the side slip ten points adrift of safety at the bottom of League Two and seemingly destined for non-league.

However, the wily boss inspired a quite remarkable turnaround and the Great Escape job was completed when a 2-1 win over Exeter City at The Vic secured the Club’s most unlikely safety in the Football League.

Middlesborough U-21 We welcome the Middlesbrough Under 21 team to Station View on Thursday 16 July.

The team are a very accomplished side as they are the Barclays U-21 Premier League Second Division champions and also the current North Riding Senior Cup holders.

In charge of the team are Professional Development Coach Paul Jenkins, who has coached at all levels in Middlesbrough’s Academy and his assistant Graeme Lee, who played at professional level for Hartlepool, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster, Bradford City and Notts County.

The Middlesbrough team is: Andre Bennett Joined the club at 14. Very quick, agile defender who can play on the left or right on in central midfield. Has performed at a high level throughout the season.

Jonathan Burn Captained the successful U-21 side last season. Joined Boro from Sunderland Academy.

Has made very good progress at right and left centre-back.

Harrison Chapman Exciting prospect who has been with the club since he was eight years old. Recently capped at England U-18 level for the first time. Exciting dribbling winger or No 10.

Luke Coddington Been with the club since he was nine. Capped by England at U-17, U-18 and U-19 level.

Has experience with Northern Premier League side Spennymoor and Northern League Guisborough. Goalkeeper who is developing nicely.

Dael Fry Central defender capped at England U-17 and U-18 level.

Joe Fryer Some recent outstanding performances with the U-21s. Developing into a very competent goalkeeper.

Adam Jackson Darlington-born, Adam has been with the club for a long time. Progress hindered by injury over the last couple of years, but now starting to regain match fitness. Central defender capped by England at U-17, U-18 and U-19 level.

Mark Kitching Has been with the club since he was seven. Very versatile left-footed player who can operate at left-back, left wing, central midfield or No 10.

Tom McAloon Suffered serious ligament injury in an U-21 game at Reading last October but has made good progress after making good recovery. Can play left wing, right wing or No 9.

Lewis Maloney Been with the club since he was 15. Suffered injury setbacks at 18 but last season has cemented a place in central midfield with U-21s.

Junior Mondal Top scorer for Boro’s U-18s last season in a side that won the league title, beating Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton among others. Left- footed striker who players No 9 or left wing.

Joao Morelli Joined from Juninho’s club Ituano in Brazil. A striker who is developing nicely in a new culture.

Robbie Tinkler Local boy born in Trimdon, Co Durham. Versatile defender who can play anywhere across the back line or central midfield.

Joe Wheatley Stalwart of Boro U-18s success last year. Enjoyed a title-winning season in a holding central midfield role.

Nostell Miners Welfare FC Prior to the current club, a team under the name of Nostrell Colliery Football Club played in the village during the 1890s and early 1900s; the team won the Wakefield and District League during this period.

The current club Nostrell Miners Welfare Football Club was founded in 1928, after the purchasing of a plot of land to play on for £400, the location which they remain at today.

The club won the Wakefield and District League during the 1937–1938 season.

Play was halted for World War II, but when the club returned they were successful in several colliery football competitions. In the late 1950s, the club toured Belgium and won a trophy on their tour. In the late 1960s, Nostell Miners Welfare continued their success in the Wakefield area eventually been brought up to the West Yorkshire League.

The 1966–67 season was a successful one for the tclub, as they won the West Yorkshire League and cup double.

By the early 1970s, they were once again playing in the Wakefield and District League.

After a period of rebuilding of their squad, the club managed to regain the success of previous years and were promoted to the West Yorkshire League in 1982.

The club worked their way up to the West Yorkshire League Premier Division to begin a successful period in their history. Alan Colquhoun took over as manager in the late 1990s, helping the club gradually improve in the league, becoming champions in 2004–05. They also appeared in the cup finals three consecutive times.

They finished well during the 2005–06 season, and, as champions Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie were not applicable for promotion, Nostell Miners Welfare along with A.F.C. Emley were promoted to the Northern Counties East Football League Division One. This is the highest the club has ever been in their history.

On 28 April 2009, Nostell won the Northern Counties East Football League Presidents Cup final against Scarborough Athletic, away at Bridlington, winning 3–2 on aggregate.

A cry for help in November 2014, both on and off the pitch, was made in the local media. Paul Lines and Simon Turfrey agreed to join the Club has first team manager and chairman respectively. The pair have vast experience of the Northern Premier League, having worked together at Ossett Town and Wakefield FC. They hope to turn the fortunes of the Club around, ensuring the Club becomes competitive again.

Darlington 1883 The company Darlington 1883 Limited was incorporated on 18 Jan 2012 by owners of Darlington Football Club. This company then went on to purchase the assets of Darlington F.C. on 3 May 2012 when a CVA could not be agreed with creditors. Being regarded as a new club by the FA meant that Darlington 1883 could not be placed higher than level nine of the football pyramid, four divisions below where Darlington F.C. had been at the end of the 2011–12 season.

Darlington Football Club itself was founded in 1883, and became a professional football club in 1908, joining the North Eastern League. The club became a member of the Football League in 1920, in which it competed until 1989, and again from 1990 to 2010. In the 1989–90 season and from 2010 to 2012, Darlington played in the Football Conference.

Darlington went into administration in 2004, in 2009, and again in October 2011 when enough money was raised by fans’ groups to compete for the whole of the 2011–12 season, which ended with Darlington relegated into the Conference North.

The club was eventually taken over by Darlington1883, a group of local fans, with the intention of moving into community ownership. Darlington1883 failed to arrange a CVA, and as such on 21 June 2012 Darlington F.C. ceased to exist. The as yet unnamed ‘phoenix’ club were placed into the Northern League Division One, on the recommendation of the Football Association when the club applied to use a ground without the required grading for the Northern Premier League. An appeal against the FA decision was inevitably rejected, confirming that the new club would not be able to play as Darlington F.C. On 25 June 2012 the new board’s registration of a new club, under the name of Darlington 1883, was accepted.

In March 2013 it was confirmed that the Darlington Football Club Community Interest Company (DFC CIC), which represents around 800 fan-members, had taken a 52% stake in the football club. This made the club 100% fan and community owned, with 16% owned by the Darlington 1883 Supporters’ Club and 32% by 28 individual fans.

Darlington 1883 announced that three members of the DFC CIC would be added to the board as directors, along with current ones and new chief executive officer, Martin Jesper, head of football operations, Laura Drew and head of club development, Dave Mills.

Following a successful first season in the Northern League Division One, Martin Gray’s Darlington 1883 were crowned champions with a record haul of 122 points, having scored 145 goals in the process. As a result, Darlington 1883 were promoted to the Northern Premier League Division One North.

In the 2014–15 season, Darlington again finished 2nd and on 2 May 2015 they won the playoff final against Bamber Bridge to win promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Darlington were the only top team in the Division One North to take full points from Harrogate Railway in the 2014/15 season, displaying [at times] some breathtaking attacking play in those games. Darlington were without doubt the best team that Railway played against last season.

Darlington fans came and supported Harrogate Railway at Christmas when their game was called off at the last minute, enjoying the 90 minutes as Railway beat Darlington’s rivals for promotion, Salford at Station View. Railway heroes, Nathan Cartman and Rob Youhill joined Darlington in 2015 and we look forward to seeing them playing with their new team back at Station View in this friendly.

Field AFC This is the third year in a row that we have played Field FC. A local west Yorkshire premier team. They have spent the last couple of years under the guidance of Steve Vickers winning cup competitions and last year the league.

Previous games have always been a stern test and this year should be no different. One of the reasons Harrogate Railway play field is because of Lee Ashforth’s links - as it was his boyhood club. Field are a great football team and will provide a difficult test at Station View for Lee’s side.

One of the main players for Field FC is Darryl Leech. Darryl has spent many years playing at North East Counties Level for Brighouse Town and later Liversedge FC under Billy Miller and Ash. Although now at the backend of his career, Darryl is always good to chip in with a few goals as well as being a natural leader on the pitch.

The manager Steve vickers knew Lee Ashforth from his early days playing Sunday morning football in Bradford. Steve commonly known as Mario was a versitile midfielder who led by example. He has now taken that into his management approach by being very vocal in the dugout and is a great motivator.

With this being the last game before the start of the regular season, Railway are looking forward to this game as a key marker in their preparations.

Yorkshire Amateur AFC

The club was founded as Yorkshire Amateur A.F.C. by a local man called Kolin Robertson in Leeds during November 1918. Around the time that Yorkshire Amateur formed and began playing, a local side named Leeds City became defunct; Robertson gained a lease for their ground Elland Road to play friendlies at, but by 1920 they sold it to the newly formed Leeds United for £250.

The club became one of the original founding members of the Yorkshire Football League in 1920–21, and played at various grounds during this period, even sharing with Harrogate Town at one point. The following year they became the first ever football club from Britain to tour the Eastern European countries of Latvia and Estonia, in season 1930–31 they moved to their current home of Bracken Edge.

The most successful year in the club’s history was in 1931–32; they reached the FA Cup 1st Round going out to Carlisle United 3–1, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Amateur Cup before going out to Marine 2–1 and were crowned champions of the Yorkshire Football League Division One. For the second time in their history, the club reached the FA 1st Round, where they played Lincoln City in 1945–46. Yorkshire Amateur pulled off a 1–0 victory at against their Football League opposition, but were squashed 5–1 in the second leg, ending their FA Cup dream.

Yorkshire Amateur became a founder member of the Northern Counties East League in 1982, where they still remain.

Graham Hodder was appointed first team manager in 2007 after leading the clubs U17s to winning the Supreme Premier Division Championship, the following season he led the U18s to Leeds & District Cup and league Cup success and managed the reserves that season winning the Harrogate league championship.

Graham stood down in 2010 after taking over as the Barkston Ash Rep Side manager.

Harrogate Town FC The club was founded as Harrogate AFC in 1914. Previously the town of Harrogate had tried to put together a football team as far back as 1907 but nothing emerged until 1914. They were entered into the Northern League upon their year of founding, and were set to play their home fixtures at the County Ground. However, due to the First World War all fixtures were postponed.

After the First World War ended, a meeting was held around the idea of putting the club back together. A man named Robert Ackrill Breare instigated this, and he later became the Secretary of the club. Harrogate were entered into the West Riding League.

After finishing fifth in the Premier Division in 2003–04, the club became founders of the newly established Conference North in 2004. During their FA Cup run in the 2005–06 season, Harrogate were drawn to play away at Torquay United, their first ever cup game against Football League opposition. After drawing 1–1 at Plainmoor, they lost 6–5 on penalties after a 0–0 draw in the replay. At the end of the season the club finished fifth and qualified for the promotion play-offs, but lost 1–0 to eventual winners Stafford Rangers.

At the end of the 2009–10 season the club finished bottom of the Conference North and were due to be relegated. However, after Northwich Victoria were demoted due to financial problems, the club were reprieved.

Before the start of the 2011–12 season, Bill Fotherby handed control of the club to Irving Weaver, father of manager Simon, Tad Nowakowski, father of player Adam, also joined the board to help improve community links. The 2011–12 season ended in a relegation dogfight, Harrogate saved on the last day thanks to a 4–0 away win at Corby.

The 2012–13 season saw the team’s best ever run in the FA Cup. On 3 November 2012 they beat League Two team Torquay United 1–0 to go beyond the first round for the first time. They drew Hastings United in the second round. The tie finished 1–1, with a replay being played at Hasting’s this tie again finished 1–1, due to a late goal from Harrogate player Tom Platt. However, Harrogate lost 5–4 on penalties.

2015/16 sees Town emerge as one of the favourites to gain promotion out of their division and Railway’s greatest rivals will prove a stern test for the new manager and team.

Knaresborough Town AFC The club were very successful in the York Football League during their early days under the name Knaresborough Football Club, winning the championship in 1902-03, 1903–04 and 1904–05, the latter of which was achieved with a 100% record.

Due to their good form, they were invited into the Northern League, where they competed against teams such as York City and Scarborough. They finished 9th in their first season in the league, one place behind Scarborough, and above York City. The following season they were relegated and re-joined the York Football League in the 1911-12. Not long after the club fell into more problems and were suspended for the 1913-14 season.

The club was folded at the start of World War II, but reformed under their original name, the name of Knaresborough Football Club due to financial problems. Soon after the Town part of the club’s name was restored. They did not return to the York League however, in the following 25 years they played in the West Yorkshire League and the Harrogate and District League. They also moved to their current ground Manse Lane by the end of the 1950s.

For a long period from 1972 onwards, they were a part of the Harrogate League. Only to be accepted back into the West Yorkshire League as recently as 1993-94. They marked their return to the league in style, winning the Premier Division League Cup final against Sherburn White Rose 3-1 at Queen’s Terrace; Ossett Albion’s stadium.

The Whitworth Cup was won in 1995 and the Hulme Cup in 1999 & 2004. The Reserves had success with League and Cup wins in the West Yorkshire League, doing the double in Division Four in 1994-95 and followed that by winning the Division Three title the following year to gain promotion into division two.

It was after this season that the Premier Alliance Division (now called Alliance Division One) was formed for the reserve sides of the Premier Division teams. The Reserves have won the Premier Alliance Division League Cup in 1998-99 and again in 2003-04. Under the management of Rob Pearson and Colin Lacey the Club won the Whitworth Cup in 2005-06. Brian Davey brought it back to Knaresborough in 2007-08 and finished a creditable third in the West Yorkshire League Premier Division. In Brian’s words his objective was to improve on that position the following season and he certainly stood by those words, winning the West Yorkshire League Premier Division Title in 2008-09.

It was during the season 2008-09 that the club moved out of the old clubhouse building which had served as changing rooms before it was turned into a clubhouse in 1992 and into the new one. The following year in 2009-10 the club won the coveted West Riding County FA ‘County Challenge Cup’.

Summer 2015 saw the shock resignation of Brian Davey and Paul Stansfield take the reigns. Paul is an ex-Railway player and we wish him and the team all the best for the new season.

Harrogate Railway Ladies Double Winners The 2014/15 season got off to the usual turbulent start (how many players do we have, how can we attract more, availability of players as everyone is off on summer holidays and how do we kick on from our 1st cup win in 3 years). After a pre-season of usual uncertainty a squad base of 25 players existed, which was healthy given the previous year’s take up in the ladies game. Looking at the ability in the squad it was clear that the ambition for the year should be cup retention, win the league and gain promotion. That sounds a staggering ask of the squad, but this gives you an idea of the confidence I had in this particular squad.

The season commenced and as ever in the Railway Ladies tradition, starting slowly with a painful loss at home to Brighouse Ladies and subsequent draws against Brayton Belles and Ossett Town respectively.

Despite these setbacks the confidence still existed in me and the group that we could still go on and there began the old cliché of “taking one game at a time”.

The ladies kicked on with standout displays against Bradford Park Avenue in monsoon-like weather, Keighley Ladies and Brighouse Town away where the display of the season resulted in a 6-0 away win to Railway. The league at this point was in our hands and was grasped with both hands with another superb away day display and win against Hemsworth, resulting in promotion to the North East Regional Women’s League and pretty cup to accompany.

The cup saw difficult draws against young and hungry teams such as Gledhow AFC, Battyeford Belles and Tingley Ladies 1sts, who took Railway all the way to extra time before Rail grabbed the winner. The cup final saw Railway Ladies face Tingley Ladies Reserves, a side that had not been beaten in 4 seasons and had won their respective league by a country mile, scoring 150+ goals.

Again in true Railway tradition we were 1-0 down within 5 minutes and holes were beginning to appear across the pitch. However their experience, strength and ability shone through and resulted in the completion of a historic double by winning the game 4-1.

The season was a complete success with all goals set out for achieved. Now starts the planning for our new adventure, again concerns around playing staff is ever present, but in reality if we manage to maintain 80% of the squad from 2014/15 I predict great things again from the team. There is an air of excitement around the group and a few new faces have already started to appear. My prediction for the year is we will more than hold our own and why shouldn’t we aim high after such a momentous year.

Points From the Past THERE’S hardly been time for the nib to dry and here we are again in the warm-up to what will no doubt be another arduous campaign in the Evostik League.

There have been many comings and goings during the close season, both on and off the pitch, but let’s hope the club can still continue to build on the stability found last season.

Best of luck to new manager Lee Ashforth and the team, and may I say how proud I am of Danny Thirkell who remains loyal to the club despite a tempting offer to move to across to Tadcaster Albion with the now departed Billy Miller.

Pre-season can always be somewhat misleading when it comes to assessing form and the possibilities of what is to come. Many people say that in these so-called friendly matches the result is not as important as the performance.

Especially when you are up against teams well above your station and one of the prime objectives of the fixture is to raise much-needed funds.

However, I tend to disagree. Okay, in the very early games a manager has to experiment with a mixture of players who are definitely in his plans and the influx of new blood, lads who are keen to make an impression and hope to become part of those plans. But as we get nearer to the starting gate, then results have to matter.

When you start playing for points and cups, it’s the result. It’s what goes down in the referee’s book at the end of the game, it’s what people read in the following morning’s paper or now, perhaps, on their computer screens the same evening.

It is wonderful, and important to the club, that teams from a higher level come to play us. But a manager has to be able to assess the capability of his side against teams from a similar level to our own. We won’t be far into the season when, yes, I have to mention it, the FA Cup comes around, and you don’t need me to tell you the importance of the early rounds in that competition. No second chances.

We all remember those golden years of 2002 and 2007 and what the FA Cup, complete with TV coverage and cash earnings, can mean to a club like ours.

But also embedded in the memory are those cup visits to clubs including Rossendale, Thackley and Dunstan FB when we fell, most embarrassingly, at the first hurdle.

Poor pre-season perhaps a factor in those disasters?

There is also the early taste of a local “derby” with Town in the John Smiths Trophy. We are the underdogs this season but we have held the cup aloft several times. Depending on when you read this we may have, or maybe not have, done it again.
