WELCOME TO ROUND 4 Michael Smith Shannons Nationals Director

At the Winton round it was Supercars star Chaz Mostert and Nathan Morcom who took the round win, however will be surrendering their title lead as they both compete in Townsville this weekend. The debut of the Australian Prototype Series was held at our first round at Sandown in April, and so far the battles in the series have produced some fantastic racing. On behalf of the CAMS National Racing Championships Board of Directors and staff, welcome to the fourth round of the Shannons Nationals for 2017.

Radical racer Philip Hughes dominated the opening round at Sandown, while it was the West driven by Jason Makris who took all three wins at Winton.

This weekend we cross the New South Wales border for the first time this season, racing at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Radical Australia Cup return to their home circuit for their fourth round of the season this weekend, with battles heating up at Oliver Smith closes in on current series leader Peter Paddon.

Round 4 of the season also marks the halfway point of the Shannons Nationals’ season, and I’m sure there are competitors out there calculating their current series prospects. After a big couple of rounds, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge joins us for their fourth round of the season, with the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy now underway. Jordan Love showcased his winning spirit at the previous round at Winton; taking both the round and the first endurance win for the season, all while in the process of extending his series lead. The Australian Production Car Series will host four one-hour races this weekend at Sydney, which will proudly be supported by Tyreright as part of the third round for 2017.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our dedicated volunteers and officials who have worked tirelessly for the benefit of our sport and the Shannons Nationals. The conditions at some of the rounds this season have been very challenging, and we commend the effort you put in day in and day out. We hope that you enjoy the racing this weekend at one of our favourite circuits. Enjoy the Weekend!

Having long-distance races as part of a broader series or championship chase is not a new thing in top-level motor sport. Whether it’s getting points for winning the Bathurst 1000, Indy 500 or Le Mans 24 Hour, races of a longer duration add diversity to the season—and it’s very much the case in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli. Founded in 2011, the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy was added to the GT3 Cup Challenge schedule in a bid to further

spice up one of Australia’s top one-make series.

essentially is the next level up the Porsche pyramid.

More racing meant more laps, more time behind the wheel and more experience for drivers at all levels contesting the series.

In a series filled with short and sharp sprint races, all of a sudden tyre and race management would play a bigger role in the outcome.

For the young guns involved, it was a chance to do the kind of duration they’d get during a Supercars race or even the longer Carrera Cup races, which

For the semi-professional drivers and those doing it ‘just for kicks’, it was a chance to get more track time and more enjoyment out of an already enjoyable past time.

The series was named after Richards’ for obvious reasons: The Kiwi-born Australian motor racing hero was one of the best exponents of the art behind long-distance driving.

Queenslander Roger Lago, still the only double GT3 Cup Challenge series winner, was the first to win the series when he took out the threeround trophy in 2011, while taking the overall title that year as well.

His seven wins in the Bathurst 1000 plus remarkable accomplishments at Targa Tasmania and other major events mean his CV is amongst the very best in the sport … the fact he remains a Porsche ambassador adds to the prestige.

Victorian Kane Rose won it in 2012, while Richard Muscat proved his capabilities via a strong performance the following year.

“I always enjoyed the challenge of long-distance racing,” Richards said. “There’s a real skill into making sure you can manage the car, the tyres and everyone around you in a longer race. It’s something I really found very satisfying throughout my career and was fortunate enough to have a bit of success doing. “It’s great to have something like the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy named after me and it’s great to see the guys having a go.” Into its seventh year this season, winning ‘The Jim’ has become arguably as prestigious as winning the whole series. Staged over three 45-50 minute races across the three rounds in the middle stanza of the overall series, the races have become well known for being highly competitive and quite compelling to witness—let alone compete in.

Perhaps one of the most significant ‘Jim’ victories came the following year, when Fraser Ross won the series overall along with the enduro title. The Ross and Richards’ families had been long-time friends, adding significance to an already important title for the Victorian driver. “I’ve wanted the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy since the start of the year,” Ross said at the time. “Jim Richards is a long-time friend of the family and has been a mentor of mine, so it was really important to win this award.” The last two seasons have been significant in that they’ve been won by drivers who weren’t able to win the outright title. James Abela sealed the endurance win in 2015 via a consistent threerace performance and troubles in the longer races for fellow outright contenders, Ryan Simpson and Dylan O’Keefe.

A year later and the title went to McElrea Racing once again, this time Jaxon Evans doing the business— though Sonic rival Hamish Hardeman would go on to win the overall title. “The longer races are good fun; it’s a good test to see how consistent and level-headed you can remain instead of just having one lap speed,” Evans said. Both drivers, like Ross, O’Keefe and others before them, have found added value in experiencing the Jim Richards Enduro races too. It’s more akin to the level of competition and distance found in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia competition. It just adds to the level of preparation for the younger drivers clamouring for a career in the sport. In fact, Carrera Cup will introduce its own version of ‘The Jim’ in the final three rounds of this year’s title race, mirroring the same format introduced in GT3 Cup seven seasons ago. The 2017 ‘Jim’ started at Winton last month, with Jordan Love powering to a comfortable victory and enhancing his overall series winning prospects in the process. But such is the nature of longerdistance driving it would not be wise to lock him in as a winner just yet – such is the unpredictability of ‘The Jim’. Just as all good longer-distance racing should be.

HE SHAW IS BACK Previous Radical Australia Cup title winner Michael Shaw made his return to the series at Phillip Island, ending Peter Paddon’s winning streak in May. Shaw, winning Race 2 during the third round of the Radical season, came back from a two-year sabbatical— proving to be quite the competition for Paddon.

Paddon, who claimed his fifth consecutive season race win during the opening race at the Island, still leads the series by 11 points to a consistent Oliver Smith.

“I’ve been watching the series over the last couple of seasons since I stopped racing and watching the guys getting quicker and quicker” Shaw said.

Closing-in on the series lead, Smith is focusing on the title fight.

“One thing that did work in my favour was that Phillip Island is my favourite track. “I think it may be a fair bit different at Eastern Creek [Sydney Motorsport Park] because the guys all dropped their lap times quite significantly since I was last there. “The key for me is keeping the speed, especially at Turn 2, there’s a lot of time to be made there … hold it flat as long as you can and get on the brakes as late as you can, especially as the cars don’t have a huge amount of power—it’s all about maintaining the speed.”

8

|

T H E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE

“Peter Paddon’s demise is not the way I wanted to get back into the championship,” Smith said. “I have to start beating him on the road, but I’m really comfortable with where we’ve gotten to with the new car, but now I need to convert it into results. “Being at the front in qualifying and for the first lap is a big part of it!” Radical Australia Cup enters their fourth round of the season this weekend, embarking on their halfway point for 2017.

MAKRIS ON A MISSION In what was a coming-of-age weekend for the Australian Prototype Series at Winton Motor Raceway in June, Jason Makris not only took his first pole position—but also managed three race wins—wrapping up the round win. Despite clean-sweeping the round, the Queenslander had to fend off some stiff competition to bring home all three race victories. Starting on pole, Makris in his West WX10 defended a very fast F1000, driven by Terry Peovitis in the opening two races, swapping the lead on multiple occasions. While in the final race of the weekend, Makris fended off Aaron Steer in what was an enthralling battle. “Aaron Steer was behind me, I could see him … I could smell his hair!” Makris said after the race. Makris now sits fourth in the series, saying ‘bring on Sydney’ when asked about how he was feeling heading into the next round.

Three highly competitive races saw even competition between the P1 Sports Racers, Radicals and the FL1 open-wheelers—with each class having their turn out the front of the field at some point at Winton. The great battles across the second round have now set the scene for the upcoming events in the season, including this weekend’s racing at Sydney Motorsport Park. The series currently sees Radical racer Philip Hughes lead the standings after a strong start at the season opener at Sandown, while Peovitis and Mark Laucke are second and third respectively. John-Paul Drake is fifth, with the battle proving to be tight with just 51 points between the top five. The outright and class battles with continue this weekend, with the Australian Prototype Series contesting three races as part of their third round of the series.

ADVERTORIAL

FUELLING THE FIRE It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. Wor d s : R i c hard Crai l l

I mage s: Ra ce Fue ls A rchiv e

“Fuel,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbournebased motor sport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.” And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels. You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a usable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania.

10

|

TH E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE

“It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers. Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 Hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by. “Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually pumping fuel at race tracks.”

The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days.

could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide.

An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies.

Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting.

“We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kumho V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is re-supplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important. “It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular. “We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”. But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people

“It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business. “I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says. “We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem. “It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”

THE SHANNONS NATIONALS

SAFETY CAR

Proudly provided by McLaren Melbourne and Zagame Autosport

In 2017 the Shannons Nationals is fortunate to have a stunning McLaren 570S as the official Safety Car at all seven rounds this season, thanks to a new partnership with McLaren Melbourne and Zagame Autosport. The Nationals caught up with Zagame Autosport’s General Manager of Motorsport Cameron McConville, explaining the exclusive partnership and the car you’ll see on track this weekend leading the field. Shannons Nationals: Thanks for joining us for a chat Cam! Talk us through the partnership with McLaren Melbourne and Zagame Autosport, and why it worked to be part of the Shannons Nationals. Cameron McConville: It’s an exciting new partnership for us and it coincided with the launch of Zagame Autosport, a new start-up division of Zagame Automotive Group. We specialise in track-day cars and customer race cars, and McLaren Melbourne is one of our brands. The car is courtesy of McLaren Melbourne; we are the only McLaren dealer in Victoria, based in Swan St Richmond, next to all of our other high-end sports car dealerships. It’s great to have McLaren on board and supplying the car. It’s a good fit for us and to launch Zagame Autosport. SN: Tell us about the Shannons Nationals McLaren Safety Car. CM: This car you’ll see right throughout the Shannons Nationals is the McLaren 570S Coupe, it’s a 3.8-litre, twin-turbo mid-mounted V8 engine. It’s the lightest and probably the most powerful sports car in its class. It’s

A U T O S P O R T The Zagame Automotive Group has continued to grow its passion for things that move and over the past 15 years the company has become the leading dealer of sport, exotic and prestige brands in Victoria. Housing some of the world’s most premium marques, racing pedigree is in their DNA and the development of Zagame Autosport was inevitable. Headed up by a team of over 30 year’s motor sport experience, Zagame Autosport offers clients access to the world of racing.

At McLaren, an unswerving commitment to excellence and innovation underpins everything they do; from the performance of the Formula 1 team on race day to the ownership experience they offer with their range of sports car. McLaren Melbourne, now located in Richmond Victoria, has joined with the Zagame Automotive Group as their local McLaren retailer. Their aim is to deliver what McLaren Automotive’s engineers planned from the outset; a range of sports cars that would be a pleasure to own as well as drive.

we thought we couldn’t have a GT4 race car as the Safety Car. The 570S is very similar and the new GT4 is derived from this road car. SN: Zagame Autosport is very well represented at Shannons Nationals events this year, but not just with the Safety Car. What drivers and cars are Zagame running this season? CM: At the moment we have four categories, five cars and hopefully in the back-end of the year a couple of GT4 cars as well. We run two cars in Formula 4, with young Ryan Suhle and Tyler Everingham. In Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge we run John Steffensen, who is an ex-track and field runner and a Commonwealth Games Gold medallist—and we’re excited he’s decided to launch his racing career with us. At the Phillip Island round we ran our other ‘hero’ car in addition to the McLaren—the Lamborghini Huracan—in Australian Endurance, and of course we have Carrera Cup, with two cars for Michael Almond and myself. SN: Apart from leading the field during Safety Car periods, when can people see the McLaren on track?

AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTION CAR SERIES WWW.AUSTRALIANPRODUCTIONCARS.COM.AU

The Australian Production Car Series returns for the second time this season to the Shannons Nationals, as they line-up for their third round. In 2017 the Australian Production cars have opened up to 3E production car regulations, making more cars eligible for the series— including two-seater production sports cars and utes. Also new for the season is the Australian Production Car Cup, which will crown the outright and class winners from rounds one to six. The new prize will sit alongside the existing Australian Production Car Series Trophy, which will benefit the new 3E cars that were unable to compete in the opening round at Bathurst. The Australian Production Car Series Trophy will award the outright and class winners from rounds two to five. After the first two round of the season, Nathan Morcom and Supercars driver Chaz Mostert lead the charge, ahead of Bathurst 6 Hour winners Paul Morris and Luke Searle. Australian racing legends like John Bowe and Glenn Seton, and identities like Dean Fiore, David Russell and Craig Baird have also been known for their appearances in the series— which makes for great fun for the developing young racers and gentleman drivers.

AUSTRALIAN PROTOTYPE SERIES Evolving from the former Australian Sports Racer Series, the Australian Prototype Series will cater for open-top and Le Mans-style sports cars in Australia. A three-class structure caters for all existing eligible vehicles, while international specification ‘CN Prototype’ cars will become eligible for the first time and will compete alongside the Sports Racers, enabling a broader eligibility list that will open the series up to more cars than ever before. After the opening round of the series at Sandown, Radical racer Philip Hughes leads Terry Peovitis and Mark Laucke outright, while also leading the Radical/ Supersport Trophy class. John-Paul Drake is on top in the newly introduced Kumho Cup Class, while Terry Peovitis leads he FL1 Trophy in his F1000.

ALFA ROMEO CHALLENGE 2017 WWW.ALFACLUBNSW.ORG.AU Organised by the Veloce Racing Association, the Alfa Romeo Challenge joins the Shannons Nationals for the first time this weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park. Inspired by a group of racers from the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Australia (NSW), a group of mates wanting to race together developed a five round series that includes rounds in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. Their goal is to create a challenge for competitors, which allows as many different models as possible to run, all while having close spirited racing at an affordable cost. The series runs specific regulations that keeps parity between the different cars, by only allowing use of radial semi-slick tyres, no wings and aero aids, wheels within the original guards, minimum weights for more powerful cars and less modifications to the modern cars. The series prides itself on tough competition, fun and camaraderie for everyone involved.
