ROUND 2

SANDOWN IN THIS ISSUE

Michael Smith Shannons Nationals Director

4 Welcome to Sandown On behalf of the CAMS National Racing Championships, welcome to the second Shannons Nationals round for 2018. On the back of a very successful Shannons Nationals rounds at The Bend Motorsport Park, we are excited to be returning to Sandown to kick-start our Victorian line-up. There were a lot of positives from the season opener at the Tailem Bend circuit, with gate numbers, livestream audiences and social media engagements at all-time record numbers. For more than a decade the Shannons Nationals has continued to thrive on the national circuit racing scene and we're excited to see that success continue into 2018. Round 2 boasts a strong line-up, with some of Australia's best championships and series joining us this weekend. The CAMS Australian GT Championship joins the Shannons Nationals this weekend, which will also welcome the GT Trophy class to its field.

The Australian Prototype Series presented by Hot Wheels and the Radical Australia Cup also return for another season alongside the Shannons Nationals, racing their respective rounds this weekend. This year's season sees the Shannons Nationals travel to six of Australia's best racing circuits, across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. We are also thankful for the continued support from Shannons Insurance, who join us for the 12th year as our naming-rights partner. Shannons have been an amazing long-time supporter of motor sport and we are delighted to work with them again this year in what promises to be another fantastic season. Finally, a big thank you goes out to our dedicated CAMS officials, who work day-in and day-out to make our motor racing happen. Enjoy the second round for 2018.

The opening round of the Shannons Nationals will long be memorable, thanks to the debut of The Bend Motorsport Park and the corresponding weather that followed being the obvious discussion points. But on-track the racing was filled with intent and there were some notable performances that grabbed the eye throughout the weekend. Here is five of them that we thought stood out.

You would be hard-pressed to find many people in the paddock that could have told you much about Cooper Murray before his explosive debut performance in the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia at The Bend. After it though, he was just about the only thing people were talking about. The Melbourne teen burst onto the scene with a starring performance in his first major national-level event. It would be unfair to not mention Max Vidau in this conversation – the pair battled and battled for the race lead in a compelling third race at Round 1 and swapped the lead on many occasions.

Tailem Bend represented a coming-of-age weekend for the racing career of JP Drake. The excitable Adelaidean took to his new Wolf GB08 like a duck to water and appeared at Round 1 of the Australian Prototype Series as a genuine contender for outright results. Where others made errors, JP’s consistency and speed was impressive. What was more impressive was his enthusiastic post-race debriefs, which included a hilarious – if completely unprintable – reaction to being told he set the lap record in the final race of the weekend, as well as a running commentary on the performance of his teammate Jason ‘The Missile’ (his words, not ours) Makris. Watch the black and gold Wolf in future rounds.

A joint nomination here for the duo behind the wheel of the Laser Plumbing and Electrical BMW M6 GT3. While winners Max Twigg and Tony D’Alberto were impressive and the Porsche GT3R of Liam Talbot and John Martin also excelled, from a ‘good for the sport’ approach seeing the 'Beamer' on the podium was a big result. Richo has put his heart and soul into developing the some-what recalcitrant M6 into a winning force locally, with raw speed at Bathurst a pointer to it’s potential without any other key results. However at The Bend, with underrated Adelaidean Mike Almond in the co-driver role, the team delivered a superb podium performance that we hope is a sign of things to come.

W O L S N I W S JAME IA CUP AUSTRAL RADICAL

James played a 'bit-role' in The Bend opener, co-driving for Yasser Shahin in the pair of Radical Cup races – but that wasn’t the real story. What was the story was that the weekend marked his return from an enormous crash in a Sports Car race in Abu Dhabi last year. The Brit remains one of the fastest and most capable all-round drivers going and that he was so badly beaten up was cruel – but his sensational return (including a circuit lap record) was a great story.

THE BEND Sure, it wasn’t quite finished and the weather could have obviously been better – but signs are good for Australia’s newest circuit. The facility is going to be magnificent, but the biggest test was whether the racing would be any good. The answer was, generally, a big affirmative. It will be interesting to see how the circuit character changes when it grips up over the next year or so, but the opening race meeting gave a good

indication that passing is going to occur there. What’s more, the flow and rise and fall of the international circuit looked spectacular on TV too. People spent the week before the event suggesting that The Bend would be ‘like Phillip Island’ – but in reality, it’s already carved out its own place in the landscape. ...and it was the Shannons Nationals that kicked it all off.

ADVERTORIAL

FUELLING THE FIRE It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. Wor d s : R i c h ar d Crai l l

I mage s: Ra ce Fue ls A rchiv e

“Fuel,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbournebased motor sport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.”

Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers.

And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels.

Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 Hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by.

You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a usable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania. “It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon

1 2 // T H E R AC I NG M AG AZI NE

“Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually pumping fuel at race tracks.” The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days. An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure

the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies. “We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kumho V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is re-supplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important.

“It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business.

“It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular.

“I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says.

“We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”.

“We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem.

But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide.

“It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”

Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting.

SHANNONS' BUMPER 2018 COVERAGE Former Supercars commentator and Network Ten F1 host Greg Rust will head up this year's Shannons Nationals coverage, with fans able to enjoy action from the six rounds on their favourite devices and TVs in 2018.

Former Supercars commentator and Network Ten F1 host Greg Rust will head up this year’s Shannons Nationals coverage, with fans able to enjoy action from the six rounds on their favourite devices and TVs in 2018. The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has today confirmed details of the Shannons Nationals broadcast, with a new-look live stream on the Sunday of each event hosted by experienced broadcaster, Rust. Once again the Nationals will provide access to some of the best racing on free-to-air and subscription television, with SBS and Fox Sports to again air the popular Speedweek program. In 2018, AVE will work with CAMS to provide an improved live stream product which will be broadcast on the Sunday of each event and available on thenationals.com.au and social media. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said motor sport fans had plenty to look forward to in 2018, including Rust’s addition to the broadcast. “All motor sport fans will have seen the great work of ’Rusty’ throughout the years at various motor sport events and we can’t wait to work with him on the Shannons Nationals,” Arocca said. “Shannons Nationals plays host to a large number of categories and in 2018, our coverage of these events will allow fans to get up close and experience the action

live on Sundays as well as to recap all the highlights through Speedweek on SBS and Fox Sports. Greg Rust said he was excited about his newest challenge. “Over time I've covered a wide range of categories in Australia so this just about completes the box set,” Rust said. “I'm passionate about motor sport at all levels and the Shannons Nationals covers such a wide range... it’s the perfect mix. From the CAMS Australian GT Championship to the Australian Production Cars and every other category we’ll see race on the calendar this season, I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and sharing the insights from the track to those fans who are watching on at home.” Rust's involvement in the series will be something of a focal point in a busy 2018 which will see him broadcasting in Asia, Australia and across the Tasman in New Zealand. He recently returned to the coverage of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship at the opening round in Ballarat and also worked with the GPTV team at Albert Park and looks set to be at the Singapore F1 Grand Prix in September as well. "The Shannons on-air team they've assembled is terrific. I'll be working with some very experienced commentators and producers who I really respect. They love the sport as much as I do and they go about broadcasting the same way I do.

"It's about the constituents, the teams, the cars, the drivers and ensuring we answer the questions the fans are thinking about as they watch. “I also reckon its perfect for viewers of all ages no matter how they digest their motor sport. If you want to watch the live stream we'll endeavour to interact with you along the way and have plenty of fun too.” This news comes on the back of CAMS’ recent announcement regarding free-to-air coverage of both the CAMS Australian Rally Championship and BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship. “It’s exciting to see the interest in motor sport on the rise and we know that as the technology improves, coverage of the various championships will only get better in the years ahead. We’re excited to be playing a large part in that,” Arocca added. Following on from the successful coverage of The Bend Motorsport Park, the live stream is set to cover the next five rounds of the Shannons Nationals: Sandown, Phillip Island, Queensland Raceway, Winton and Sydney Motorsport Park.
