It$is$also$a$well$know$fact$that$gay$men$randomly$ add$people$to$their$Facebook$account$and$delete$ numbers$from$their$mobile$phones$more$so$than$ rest$of$the$denominations$in$the$society.$Is$it$ because$they$incapable$of$respecting,$committing,$ and$valuing$relationship,$and$setting$boundaries$ and$managing$expectations?$Or$are$they$just$too$ prey(dick)table?

In$another$incident$ recently,$an$acquaintance$ who$travelled$to$the$city$ asked$me$if$I$could$share$a $ few$“mustQf**k”$numbers$ in$the$city.$I$have$come$ across$people$who’ve$ asked$me$for$“mustQsee”$ places,$restaurants,$etc.,$ but$this$guy$was$asking$me$ if$I$had$“mustQf**ks”$in$my$ city.$When$did$sexual$ tourism$become$ mainstream?$Am$I$running$ a$brothel$or$gigolo$joint$in$ the$city?$Should$I$take$it$as$ an$offence$or$should$I$ supply$numbers$with$a$ hope$that$I$can$ask$him$to$ return$the$favor$if$I$ever$ visited$his$city?$Is$sharing$ really$caring?

Brown#ring#test Remember$the$brownQring$ test$from$high$school$ chemistry$class?$A$friend$ (not$anymore)$of$mine$in$ the$city$would$randomly$ put$together$people$like$ science$experiments$and$ watch$them$copulate$and$ separate$for$his$own$ thrills.$Since$when$did$men$ start$feeling$and$living$like$ God?$There$was$a$time$ when$he$intentionally$ introduced$me$his$friend$ to$see$if$he$could$set$the$ ball$of$cotton$on$fire.$His$ experiment$failed$and$

later$when$I$came$to$know$ about$his$real$intentions,$I$ felt$like$a$like$a$bacteria$in$a$ petri$dish.$My$experience$ was$supposed$to$be$his$ experiment.$ ExBclaimed!

Here$is$another$interesting$ anecdote$from$the$past.$I$ introduced$my$ex$to$a$friend$ at$a$concert,$and$my$friend$ knows$we$were$not$together$ anymore.$My$friend$swaps$ number$with$him$and$both$of$ them$meet$outside$for$a$ coffee$in$my$absence$and$ then$slowly$my$friend$tries$to$ get$my$ex$to$stain$his$sheet.$ Does$it$mean$he$breaches$ the$code$of$friendship$if$my$ friend$slept$with$my$ex?$How$ should$I$react$when$my$ (ex)claimed$that$my$friend$ was$hitting$on$him?$He$felt$as $ though$I$had$arranged$for$my$ friend$to$sleep$with$him.$Do$I$ side$with$my$ex$and$snap$ties $ with$my$friend?$But$didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t$ you$guys$willingly$exchange$ numbers$and$meet$in$my$ absence?$How$am$I$to$take$ responsibility$for$this?

were$being$set$on$a$date.$ Nothing$happened$sexually$ during$the$date,$and$a$beautiful$ friendship$sprouted$from$ subsequent$meetings.$In$the$ hindsight,$if$they$had$seen$each$ other$and$if$the$relationship$ would$have$failed$after$ sometime,$I$ran$the$risk$of$losing$ two$beautiful$friends.$I$know$my$ intentions$were$good,$but$the$ outcomes$are$always$ unpredictable.

For$most$gay$men$relationships$ can$be$like$walking$on$eggshells$ and$can$also$be$like$stepping$on$ landmines$and$more$so$for$ someone$who$tries$to$bring$ people$together$for$friendship,$ fling$or$a$relationship.$Why$take$ ownership$and$responsibility$for$ their$good$and$bad$experiences?

mimic$his$gym$routine$(with$lesser$success$than$he).$$ Back$then,$we$would$stroll$down$the$streets$of$NYC$ together$to$look$at$the$goods$at$the$outdoor$ summer$markets.$$He$used$to$jokingly$whisper$that$ one$day$he$would$be$a$powerful$lawyer$and$he$ would$buy$me$everything$that$my$heart$could$ desire.$$Why$did$I$scoff$at$this$idea?$ Towering$at$sixQfootQsomething,$Chris$is$a$friendly$ giant.$$Possessing$a$sheepish$grin$and$soft$brown$ eyes,$his$boyish$good$looks$are$quintessentially$“All$ American.”$$Practicing$medicine$in$New$York$and$ specialising$in$HIV$treatment,$he$is$as$smart$as$they$ come—with$a$degree$from$Yale$to$prove$it.$$Again,$ why$didn’t$I? And$then,$I$stop$to$think$about$myself:$$sixQfootQ something$Latino$with$a$big$heart$for$slum$children.

A$Master’s$from$Columbia$with$a$3.99$GPA,$ experience$working$at$the$United$Nations,$and$ enough$grit$to$rise$above$innumerable$challenges$to$ be$a$successful$teacher$trainer$in$India.$$In$a$few$ months,$I$plan$on$applying$to$PhD$programs$in$Hong$ Kong.$$On$paper,$I$think$I$sound$like$quite$the$catch?

Yet,$let’s$consider$this.$$If$you$were$a$cute$and$ highly$talented$American$living$in$NYC,$would$you$ leave$behind$the$splendour$of$the$Big'Apple$to$ follow$a$penniless$educator$to$work$in$a$developing$ country$where$you$may$encounter$homophobia?$$ Probably$not.$$If$you$are$a$smart$and$handsome$ Indian,$would$it$make$sense$to$get$serious$with$a$ firang$with$a$soonQtoQbeQexpired$visa$and$whose$ plans$are$to$move$to$perhaps$five$more$countries$ other$than$your$own$(and$we’re$not$talking$places$ like$France—more$like$Cambodia$or$Peru)?$$ Unlikely.

Herein$is$the$conundrum:$$I$could$sacrifice$my$ dreams$to$be$with$the$man$of$my$dreams.$$Or,$I$ could$become$the$man$of$my$dreams$by$attaining$ my$own$dreams,$albeit$without$the$man$of$my$ dreams$by$my$side.$$Which$dream$is$the$dream$ worth$dreaming? TQC

Each$change$of$geography$brings$new$milestones,$many$ related$to$Merchant’s$private$life$as$a$gay$man,$and$ others$to$his$development$as$a$writer.

Merchant$writes$in$a$mix$of$aphorism$and$confessional,$ in$a$serious,$selfQpossessed$tone.$This$is$autobiography$ as$performance,$and$Merchant$offers$us$glimpses— sometimes$frustratingly$oblique—of$an$eventful,$ emotionally$intense$life.

In$his$interview$with$Lounge,$Merchant$mentions$ Quentin$Crisp,$whose$glorious$memoir$The$Naked$Civil$ Servant$is$a$landmark$of$modern$British$writing.$The$ Naked$Civil$Servant$is$a$hard$book$to$read,$because$it$is$ difficult$for$a$contemporary$reader$to$find$a$way$to$ react$to$the$exquisite$lightness$with$which$Crisp$writes$ of$a$life$lived$in$defiance$of$violent$discrimination$and$ rejection.$It$is$rooted$in$the$social$context$of$Crisp’s$ early$20th$century$England,$but$that$violence$is$still$a$ fact$of$life$for$gay$and$transpeople$around$the$world.

Merchant’s$tone$and$story$are$both$completely$ different,$but$he$too$writes$of$grief$and$injustice$with$ ironic$distance.$The$effort$is$similarly$affecting.

KASHISH 2012 needs EVERYONE to contribute

WHAT IS ‘KASHISH’?

KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival is the first and only LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) film festival in India to be held in a mainstream theater and the only such festival to receive clearance from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The festival is organized by Solaris Pictures and Bombay Dost in association with The Humsafar Trust.

The theme for the third edition of the festival, KASHISH 2012, to be held from May 23-27th is ‘FOR EVERYONE’. The festival will make a special effort to program films and have panel discussions that appeal not only to the LGBTQ community but also those that relate to families and friends of LGBT people. The festival is open FOR EVERYONE and it is a FREE event.

WHY IS ‘KASHISH’ FUNDRAISING? The festival is a not-for-profit event. We don’t charge ticket prices or registration fee. It is open to EVERYONE free of charge.

With no government support or much corporate sponsor support, we rely heavily on individuals, organizations and corporates to make the festival happen. We are crowd-funding the festival this year through Wishberry and LGBT Supports. All the money collected is used to cover festival expenses like venue costs, printing and stationery, promotional materials, trophies and awards, travel and stay for filmmakers, etc.

Ismaël$spends$the$entire$night$awake;$in$the$ morning$he$meets$Erwann,$Gwendal’s$ younger$brother,$who$before$leaving$for$ school$offers$him$his$room$so$he$can$sleep$in$ his$bed.$When$Erwann$returns$and$wakes$ Ismaël$up$he$borrows$some$clean$clothes$ from$Erwann$and$leaves$for$work.$When$he$ returns$from$it$he$is$secretly$followed$then$ met$by$Erwann$who$asks$him$if$he$can$go$ home$with$him;$Ismaël$rejects$this.$ He$gets$to$his$apartment$to$find$Jeanne$still$ there,$which$annoys$him$and$he$goes$to$ Erwann’s$apartment$to$spend$the$night$there $ again.

At$a$lunch$with$Julie’s$family$next$day$Ismaël$ rejects$an$offer$to$her$life$insurance$money$ from$her$father.$At$night$he$takes$Maude,$a$ waitress$from$the$bar$he$used$to$go$to$with$ Julie$and$Alice,$for$a$oneQnight$stand$to$his$ apartment.

They$wake$up$at$noon$to$realize$that$Jeanne$ is$present:$Ismaël$leaves$and$Jeanne$is$ disappointed$when$she$finds$out$the$girl$is$ not$Alice.$Ismaël$goes$to$work$to$find$Erwann$ waiting$for$him;$he$tells$Erwann$that$he$is$ flattered$by$his$attention$but$neither$ interested$nor$in$need$of$him.$Alice,$having$ broken$up$with$Gwendal,$thinks$Erwan$had$ been$sent$there$to$pick$up$their$apartment$ keys;$she$gives$them$to$Ismaël$to$pass$them$ on$to$Erwann.$

Leaving$work$Ismaël$finds$Erwann$waiting$for$ him$again;$he$gives$him$the$keys$then$takes$ them$back$and$they$both$go$to$Ismaël’s$ apartment.$Meanwhile$Alice$receives$a$ phone$call$from$Julie’s$mother;$the$two$of$ them$meet$at$a$restaurant,$where$Julie’s$ mother$asks$her$to$take$care$of$Ismaël.$ Jasmine,$Julie’s$other$sister,$comes$to$tell$her$ mother$that$her$father$is$upset$that$she$isn’t$ at$home$so$late$at$night,$so$she$leaves,$ leaving$Alice$and$Jasmine$talking$alone$for$a$ while.

In$Ismaël’s$apartment$he$and$Erwann$make$ love;$in$the$morning$Jeanne$finds$them$in$ bed$together$and$leaves$again.$Ismaël$ follows$her;$Jeanne$says$that$now$she$ understands$why$he$and$Julie$were$in$a$ threesome$with$Alice$and$why$he$didn’t$want$ to$have$kids;$they$argue$until$Ismaël$leaves.$ Erwann$goes$to$look$for$Ismaël$in$his$office,$ but$not$finding$him$talks$to$Alice,$who$asks$ him$when$he$is$leaving$whether$he$and$ Ismaël$are$together,$to$which$he$replies$that$ he$hopes$so.$ Ismaël$is$in$the$meantime$in$the$cemetery$ visiting$Julie's$grave;$the$following$song$is$ sung$as$if$by$Julie’s$ghost,$asking$Ismaël$why$ it$had$taken$him$so$long$to$visit$her.$After$ leaving$the$cemetery$Ismaël$walks$ despondently$through$the$city$and$gets$ drunk;$Alice$comes$across$him$and$takes$him$ to$Erwann’s$apartment.$Ismaël$and$Erwann$ argue$about$whether$their$relationship$ should$continue$and$the$movie$ends$with$ Ismaël$kissing$Erwann$and$asking$him$to$love$ him$less$but$for$a$long$time.

Sunday$mornings$are$often$a$time$to$kick$back$and$ laze$in$bed.$This$each$brunch$casserole$is$the$ideal$ recipe$as$it$can$be$prepared$the$night$before$and$ baked$while$you$enjoy$your$coffee.$ And$more$importantly,$it$will$still$give$you$enough$ time$to$get$rid$of$the$puffy$eyes$from$your$ Saturday$night$binge$at$the$club!

Ingredients 1$quart$grape$(or$cherry)$tomatoes,$halved Olive$Oil$(to$taste) Pinch$of$sugar,$salt$and$pepper 8$cups$dayQold$French$bread,$cut$into$1$inch$cubes 2/3$cup$crumbled$goat$cheese 1/2$cup$basil,$julienned$ 1$1/4$teaspoon$salt 1$1/4$teaspoon$pepper 9$eggs 3$cups$milk Preparation#(The#day#before) Preheat$the$oven$to$225.$$Arrange$the$halved$ tomatoes$cutQside$up$on$a$baking$sheet.$$Drizzle$ with$olive$oil$and$sprinkle$lightly$with$the$sugar,$ salt$and$pepper.$$Bake$the$tomatoes$for$3$to$3$1/2$ hours.$$Chop$the$dried$tomatoes.

Butter$a$9$x$13$inch$casserole.$$Scatter$the$bread$ evenly$in$the$dish.$$Sprinkle$evenly$with$chopped$ tomatoes,$goat$cheese,$basil,$salt$and$pepper.$$ In$a$small$bowl,$whisk$together$the$milk$and$eggs.$$ Pour$evenly$over$the$bread$mixture.$$Cover$tightly$ and$refrigerate$overnight.

Preparation#(In#the#morning) Remove$the$casserole$from$the$refrigerator$and$ uncover.$$Preheat$the$oven$to$350$F.$$Bake$the$ casserole$for$about$40$minutes,$or$until$the$ middle$is$cooked$(test$with$a$knife)$and$the$ casserole$is$browned$and$puffed$all$over.$$Cut$into$ squares$and$serve$hot.
