The Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit, Cubao, First Inspiring, Batasan Hills, and Balintawak have shown their solitude by way of spearheading projects such as donation drives, rescue projects, and seminars. Indeed, the Rotaractors would remain serving wholeheartedly.

The Healing Power of Art

Written by: TP Marian Abio Rotaract Club of Mega Edsa

rt is more than a creative hobby, but a platform to paint, capture, form, and express one’s mind with fluidity, openness, and freedom. It can both disturb and calm. But most importantly, it can heal.

This awareness of the power of art has been realized further, where, in this challenging situation, people have cultivated their own creativity in different ways. It has become a coping mechanism and comfort.

To celebrate the National Arts Month, the Rotaract Club of Mega Edsa organized the webinar series, Salinsining 2.0: Painting Mental Health Awareness. Already in its second year, the talk offered topics and activities on art and mental health guided by psychology professionals and art therapists. In dealing with this new normal, it was proven essential for Filipinos, young and old, to cultivate artistic expression and understand its role on mental health wellness.

“In the last year, the Filipino people have faced one of the most challenging outbreaks and were all forced to change their lifestyles and normal forms of living, which affected their well-being,” Crisson Fermalino, project head of Salinsining, said in an interview.

“We have made this webinar to remind ourselves that even in these trying times, we can still find that inspirational push to cope up and stay passionate for the future.”

Esteemed speakers in the field of psychology and advocates of mental health and art were invited to deliver their own perspectives under the said theme. The first one was Sir Ronnie Noche, a social sciences professor in Miriam College who facilitated talks on mental health and overcoming depression. He was followed by writer and illustrator Ms. Alexa Quiaoit. On the second day, Mrs. Lorna Michaela S. Valino-Lazo opened the webinar. She is an Art for Health professional and a founding member and currently the President of Philippine Association for Biography Work and Art Therapy, Inc. (PABATI). Lastly, the event ended with a speech from Mr. John Vincent Felix, a registered psychologist and psychometrician, and a counselor for Magis Creative Spaces Incorporated.

Project Salinisining has continued its legacy to give importance to art expression, as well as the charity and opportunity to aid those in need of physical and mental help. Last Rotary year, it provided an avenue for children in an orphanage to express themselves through traditional art. Now that the country is facing a larger struggle, it is of great importance to take care of one’s well-being, as well as of others’.
