Entrepreneur of the Month Kim Smith - First Stitches

By: Laura Stankiewicz Look at any successful businesswoman and you will discover how much they truly believe in themselves. Self-belief is probably the most critical trait possessed by any successful entrepreneur. If you don’t think you can succeed, you probably won’t get very far. Additionally, successful female entrepreneurs are always passionate about what they do because they tend to create businesses around the things they enjoy. Kim Smith’s entrepreneurial story began in 2011 when she purchased four Baby Lock sewing machines and taught sewing lessons to individuals of all ages. If she had four in a class, and someone had their own sewing machine, she would tell them, “grab your machine and come on in.” As the need grew for more space, Kim and her husband purchased an adorable building on 4th street, in Canon City. Currently, they have a Canon and Pueblo location. Both stores feature a unique line of different fabrics. “This is a great location for us. Tourists are a big summer business. The tour buses stop at the Royal Gorge Railroad, and the ladies will quickly run in here to see what we have. We check them out very quickly and get them right back on their buses,” Kim chuckled. Kim believes in herself and that what she is doing is making a difference. That strong sense of purpose is reflected in her Kim Smith - Owner of First Stitches business. She is very passionate, and as Kim calls it, she is “on a big soapbox,” that is, that people need to shop local. “Sure, you might be able to save a dollar or two by shopping on Amazon, but Amazon doesn’t help support the Little League or Football team in your community. First Stitches donates to several local charities. If small businesses have money coming into their stores, the money is very likely to go back into the community. Kim stated, “We help several charities including, The Boys and Girls Club, the pregnancy center and homeless shelter. It’s important to the community to shop local.” The shop provides many classes, and the fabric selection is always fresh and new. First Stitches is an authorized dealer for Janome, Baby Lock, and Bernina. Kim’s husband, Randy Smith, is a certified sewing machine technician. Randy Smith added. “If they have any questions regarding the purchase, or repair of a machine we are here to help.” Kim enthusiastically shared, “It’s a passion of mine to get people to sew. I would love to see more men sewing. Sewing satisfies my soul,” she said. Kim further explained, “Whether it’s a hobby, or whether it’s something they do that they want to be perfect at, it’s all about the passion. I believe that sewing provides an outlet for people, it can be very therapeutic. There is also a comradery in the sewing community. I can tell you many stories of people who met at a sewing class and are now best friends. Sewing also provides a great outlet for empty nesters to get out and make friends!” She is Kim Smith- Grapevine’s June Entrepreneur of the Month!

Turning Right To Go Left

GRAPEVINE

My passion for racing started at a very early age, as I watched my Dad race his ’55 Chevy at Pikes Peak Speedway, which was located east Alan Davis of Colorado Springs. Being too young to be in the pit area, I ran up and down the front stretch behind the fence, pretending I was racing right along with them. When I was old enough, I was in the pit area from that point on, and all I wanted was to get my turn behind the wheel.

event in May of 2018 and completed 13 events in 2018. The program continues in 2019 with at least 18 events scheduled. It is a work in progress, and we will continue to make improvements to the facility over the length of the contract with the City of Pueblo. Currently utilizing several IMCA classes, as well as Sprint Cars, Midgets, Lightning Sprints and Dwarf Cars, we hope to bring in some larger, well known sanctioning bodies in the future, as well as some “named” racers to compete, and introduce to our racing fans. For more information about the facility, please visit our website at honorspeedway.com, or find us on Facebook.

I’ve raced for years in varying classes, all along the way talking to and learning the craft from numerous track promoters, dreaming & hoping that I might get my turn to try and put on competitive and entertaining dirt track racing. But as they say, “be careful what you wish for, because it may come true”. Well, it did. After sitting quiet for 16 years, we re-opened the 1/4-mile dirt track located within Pueblo Motorsports Park, and named it after the property, and “Honor Speedway” was born. We held the first

Blair Cooper... “If it’s not dangerous or

I remember getting a speedometer for my bicycle when I was around nine years old. From that moment on it was faster and faster, until the inevitable crash. These types of endeavors have continued with greater consequence. Two weeks after I received my license I was racing my street car, and aired it out for the distance of about a football field, with only one bounce in between. Luckily it left the asphalt and slid to rest in an undeveloped portion of a cemetery. That was the unofficial start to my racing career During this same time period, my dad, Gary Radosta had gone back to racing Super Late Models around the southwest. This is when I fell in love with asphalt oval racing. When I got the chance to drive for the first time, it changed my life. Everything I had known about the limits of grip and downforce were shattered. I learned that a really fast car, and purpose built race cars are completely different, and I knew I had to have my own. When it came time to start my own operation, which was also around the time I met Tara. I took her to a race for our first date. I figured that she would either

expensive, I don’t want any part of it.” love it, hate it, or that it would just scare her off. If she didn’t love it, we probably wouldn’t have had a second date. Everything came full circle, when I was finishing up my sprint car for the season opener on our wedding. It has been five years since that first date, and we are on our fourth full season, and finished 4th in championship points at Colorado National Speedway. Tara is also now my spotter. This is the person who communicates with the driver during the race, which is a huge responsibility, and she has excelled beyond my expectations. This also ensures that I am very nice to her before I get in the car. Our newest venture was to add Dirt oval racing to our schedule with the POWRI Lucas Oil Lightning Sprints Series. On the nights we weren’t racing, we ended up going to watch open wheel sprint cars. I was yet again blown away by the corner speed, and downforce they could make, even it was on a slick clay surface. Immediately after the season, a friend let me hot lap his car. Two weeks later, I had purchased my sprint car out of California, and registered with the RMLSA. We were also thrilled that we could practice and race in our hometown of Pueblo. With the re-opening of Honor Speedway it is nice to have a track at our backdoor. They have been putting in a ton of work, and we are grateful to see things like this brought to Pueblo. The schedule we are planning to run this season contains about 35 races between both the Legend and Sprint car series. We will race all around Colorado. Honor Speedway, Colorado National Speedway, El Paso County, I-76, and Phillips County. We are also planning to hit the road for a few races, from Missouri, to Las Vegas and more. As for our future plans, we are still trying to decide if we want to continue to run on both dirt and asphalt, or if we are going to specify. One thing is for sure. None of this would be possible without the people that help us all season long. My parents have been nothing but supportive in all of my endeavors. My brother Austyn Radosta also races, but he spends as much time or even more, making my cars fast, than he does on his own. He is really the brains behind our

success. My Uncle Dominic and Aunt Shirley are endlessly promoting and supporting the team. Finally our kids. This is not a hobby. We are endlessly working to make this a viable business. We make it work, but they have to work around my schedule which is a fine balancing act. My hope is that they will find something they live for, and do it to the best of their ability. That’s where I find happiness. It also seems that if it’s not dangerous or expensive, I don’t want any part of it.

JUNE 2019

COLORADO’S CROWN JEWEL By: John Nevel Built in 1893, and remaining a family residence for 75 years, the Rosemount Museum has been dubbed the nickname, “Colorado’s Crown Jewel.” The 37 room mansion was home to the John A. and Margaret Thatcher family. It was designed by New York architect Henry Hudson Holly and it was constructed in only two years. Today, nearly all furnishings, accessories, decorative arts, paintings, custom paneling, wall and window treatments are still original to the home. Besides being featured on the A & E cable network’s nationally televised America’s Castles and the HGTV Series Christmas Castles, The Rosemount also offers guided tours which begin almost daily with the exception of special events and the last two weeks of the holiday season when self-guided tours are utilized. This beautiful history museum also offers weddings and special events for the public. The grounds and east veranda can be rented for weddings and other outdoor events. Wedding ceremonies can be conducted on the veranda or the outside grounds, and small receptions can be booked in the Carriage House.

According to a recent visitor to the museum, “This is an amazing mansion! Each room had so much detail poured in it. Hard to believe it was built so long ago but is still very modern. It is absolutely worth every dollar. This is the best museum in Pueblo.” According to their official website, www. rosemount.org, the Patrons of Rosemount are the mainstay of this non-profit institution. Each year, membership donations provide support toward the preservation of one of America’s finest examples of the Victorian era. Rosemount currently benefits from the faithful service of about 40 volunteers. The Rosemount is located at 419 W. 14th St. in Pueblo, Colorado. You can plan your visit to this Colorado work of art today by contacting the Rosemount at (719) 545-5290.

The Museum of Friends (MoF) is a Contemporary Art Museum, incorporated in 2007 in the community of Walsenburg by artists Brendt Berger and Maria Cocchiarelli. The museum’s name stems from the fact that the initial 500-piece collection of paintings, photographs, and sculptures were gifts to Brendt and Maria from friends. Today, friends and new artists have continued to donate expanding the permanent collection to over 1600 works of art. The Museum is located in the historic “Roof and Dick” Building in the heart of downtown. Today the museum is a publicly held cultural amenity in process of a major capital rehabilitation plan scheduled for completion in 2020 and includes an elevator to the 2nd floor. MoF remains open during the construction work and offers changing art exhibits, a permanent collection, a locally sourced museum gift shop “Made in Walsenburg” with workshops and classes for children and adults running year-round. Adult public programs include: Changing Exhibition Openings; Films at the Fox Series; Artists’ led talks and panel discussions on the artist role in community with the story of the Art History of Counterculture in Southern Colorado. Interview with Steven Beai - Local Comic Book Creator

Laura: What made you decide that you wanted to create a career in comics? Steven: I’ve been a professional novelist and short-story author in the Horror/Science-Fiction field for almost 30 years. A couple years ago, my son, then 16, began riffing on Steven Beai and son Julian Beai funny character names in my office Photo provide by Steven Beai one night. He kept going and going until I realized he was creating an entire world with all-manner of bumbling, would-be Heroes. I started taking notes, quickly realizing there was no way to bring this world and its stories to life through prose -- but was PERFECT material for a comic book! A few weeks later, I wrote the script for the first issue of SPIFFINGTON, P.I. -- a month after that, I found artist Martin Newman, an accomplished illustrator and one of the best people I’ve ever worked with. Meeting Martin was one of the high points of my creative journey. Laura: How long have you been in the comic book industry? Steven: A complicated question! I had amazing parents who never threw out my collection of comics and monster magazines -- so I’ve never stopped being a fan/collector, a passion now running into tens of thousands of items. I’d have to say that I’ve “been” in the industry since I was about 10 years old. I’m 56 now, so..a long time! As for being paid to write comics, a little over 2 years. Laura: Who has had the biggest influence on your comics career, and how has that person changed your work?

/extremeshotscom

• Weddings • H.S. Seniors

Steven: That’s easy. My son, Julian, who introduced me to the world of SPIFFINGTON, P.I. and Martin Newman, who brought that world to life as if he’d pulled it from both my son’s original vision and my scripts. It’s nice to be surrounded by such creative visionaries...and a little bit humbling! Laura: How long does it take you guys to create a comic? Steven: From script to published release date, about 4 months. I deliver a 33-page script to Martin within 7-10 days. Martin then has to create 200 separate pieces of art, including penciling, inking, lettering and formatting. Since we’re freelancers, we have the luxury of time, but also have to do the jobs of at least a half-dozen people employed by the bigger publishers like MARVEL and DC. Laura: Tell me a little bit about the local comic folks? Steven: Southern Colorado has a wealth of accomplished writers and artists. The biggest problem for any independent creator is getting the word out to fans. In Colorado Springs, KJ COMICS at the Citadel Mall is a very friendly venue for hosting personal appearances by local creators. OUTER LIMITS COMICS AND COLLECTIBLES in Pueblo is without question the absolute best place for creators to meet the public -- plus, it’s a terrific comic shop overall! They described ambulance drivers with swiftly dispatched stretchers laboriously retrieving the injured as fishing huts and quayside buildings deteriorated before their eyes. Epic in its magnitude and enveloping the quayside, multiple tongues of orange flames illuminated the small inlets, while, like an artist’s canvas, tiny human silhouettes dotted the eerie masterpiece. I will keep writing and pray that you are safe in England. Bless you and your family, my darling. I am sending all my love. Cousin Aileen.” With four children, my parents had rented a small row house in Wallasey’ s Sutton Road. Toward the end of WWII, while Mum chatted with a neighbor by the front gate, a German bomb shattered her friend’s home killing the sleeping baby in the upstairs bedroom. “We heard no air-raid sirens and that could have been my baby in the crib.” Mum’s shoulders shook as she sobbed softly. Later she would describe an apparition, which occurred in Sutton Road. Blessed with a sixth sense, my mother, fearful of ridicule, seldom expressed her beliefs to strangers. Sitting with my dad in the parlor by a blazing fireplace my mum slowly folded Aileen’s letter. Troubled, Dad waited patiently, but after a moment’s silence salty tears cascaded down Elsie’s pale face moistening the crumpled paper in her hand. “Oh my

God, I wish I could help them.” Distraught, my mother grieved for family and friends so far away. Since the arrival of the appalling news, my father had carefully monitored his wife’s response. Now a soft linen handkerchief appeared from his pocket. “Don’t worry, Else, they’ll be alright,” Dad murmured softly. He significantly flapped the white cloth patting her tears and then he squeezed her shoulders gently. “We’ll have a nice cup of tea with a little splash of cognac.” June 28, 1940. Nazi enemy aircraft roared over Mum’s birthplace of St. Peter Port in Guernsey while frantic islanders ran amok seeking safe havens from the ominous threat above. A relatively dry summer with scorching heat had created tinderbox conditions, which contributed to the pandemonium caused by Hitler’s degenerate military. By combining forces, the bewildered residents dispersed around the parish, while attempting to extinguish smoldering fires resulting from the campaign of terror. Islanders soon joined inconsolable neighbors who walked to the local cemetery to bury their dead; meanwhile residents on the adjacent microscopic islands of Alderney, Sark and the isolated island of Herm, reluctantly submitted to German policies...

Playful Painted Pup African painted dogs are one of the most unique and endangered animals on the planet. With striking coloring and large ears, they are a marvel to look at. Although you might often find them lounging, they are one of the animal kingdom’s best hunters. They’re twice as effective as African lions! But they’re also disappearing at a much quicker pace. In response, zoos across the country have expanded their painted dog programs through a species survival plan (SSP). The Pueblo Zoo is proud to be a part of these efforts. We are even prouder that our first pup is thriving. Painted dogs have a complex social structure. This makes the arrival of pups both thrilling and challenging. Our staff is acutely aware of the potential for loss. Insight from AZA experts was critical during this transition period and thanks to your donor and member support, our keepers were ready. Zoo visits, memberships, and donations make it possible to send keepers to trainings and fund exhibit updates to provide the best care possible. JT (pictured on the left) was born October 15, 2018 to our alpha pair, Akilah and Hunter. JT will be full-grown before the year is over. “I can see him playing with passersbys on the other side of the glass each day. He’s active and an eager

participant in his training,” says area supervisor Gina Gley. “We are lucky to have JT. Our zoo is supporting the genetic diversity of this species by participating in the SSP. Hunter and Akilah are important to the program, and JT is the future of those genes” says Hollie David, Pueblo Zoo Keeper & painted dog SSP committee member. The Pueblo Zoo is a direct supporter of African painted dogs in the wild. A portion of every admission goes toward Painted Dog Conservation, a nonprofit in South Africa that tracks wild dogs, clears snares, and educates local communities to help protect these rare canines. Your visit to the zoo will support these painted pups! JT is nearly full grown, but you may be able to tell him apart from the adults with his rowdy and playful behavior.

First U.S. Forest Service Campground Opened 100 Years Ago in Southern Colorado FACTOIDS:

By: Jim Little (Board member Pathways Scenic Byway)

The very first U.S. Forest Service campground opened in the San Isabel National Forest west of Pueblo in June 1919. And it was all thanks to the immigrant workers who toiled in the region’s steel mills and coal mines, and to the vision of “recreational engineer” Arthur H. Carhart. Squirrel Creek Campground, located near Beulah, was the nation’s first Forest Service Campground. That site can now be accessed via hiking trail from the Davenport Campground, located along State Highway 165 and along Colorado’s Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway. A trail from the Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah also links to the site. The USFS hired Carhart in March 1919 to study recreational opportunities in America’s multiple National Forests. He visited many of the sprawling forests and ultimately focused on the 1.1-million-acre San Isabel National Forest which like others were utilized for grazing, mining, timbering and watershed development. But San Isabel was different: nearby Pueblo, Colo., was dominated by the CF&I Steel Mill and its ancillary network of coal mines. Carhart learned that man of the immigrant laborers and their families spent time in the mountains where they camped, picnicked, fished and enjoyed the outdoors. It was about this same time that these mill and mine workers were achieving better pay, time off, and more mobility. The USFS had no funds for this pursuit, so Carhart and others raised money through a Pueblo booster organization and immediately went to work. In mid-June 1919, the Squirrel Creek Campground and its ten campsites opened just west of Beulah. Hundreds of vehicles lined the narrow road on opening day, and additional campsites were quickly developed. Carhart’s signature design elements are still being utilized today. He insisted on proper sanitation, clean drinking water, communal firepits and pavilions, and easy access. With the success of Squirrel Creek, Carhart rapidly developed dozens of campsites and campgrounds in the nearby foothills and mountains. He also developed a 250-mile network of roads – most still in use today – solely for outdoor recreational enthusiasts. Carhart left the federal agency just three years later, but he had compiled detailed designs which were completed years later, when the Great Depression brought on the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Works Progress Administration and other federal agencies which worked on public lands projects. Today, there are some 4,300 campgrounds located on 177 National Forest properties in 42 states which attract 205 million visitors each year. And it all started along Squirrel Creek in Colorado’s San Isabel National Forest.

--Several special events are planned for the Carhart Centennial. The USFS has an event planned in Westcliffe on June 8. The Pueblo Heritage Museum at 201 W. B St. in Pueblo is planning a display this summer honoring Carhart, and the nearby El Pueblo History Museum is also planning an event in its outdoor garden space which has a bronze bust of Carhart. --Many of Carhart’s campgrounds and other public improvements are located along and near Colorado Highways 96 and 165, which are part of the Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway. --Much of Carhart’s handiwork can be seen at the Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah; a 600-acre site which is part of the City of Pueblo’s park system. Carhart had long encouraged municipalities to promote public recreation, and Carhart had designed many elements incorporated at Pueblo Mountain Park, including picnic sites, ponds, pavilions, sports facilities, hiking trails and other improvements.
