WILD ALASKAN COMPANY

JANUARY 2020

Quality Alaskan Seafood Delivered Direct to Colorado Why not an a-la-carte service? Arron realized that he needed subscribing members to help predict how much seafood Wild Alaskan needs to source so that it can be delivered year-round. That’s right: no need to buy a year’s worth of seafood in bulk and store it in a freezer for months on end, risking freezer burn and quality degradation.

Let’s face it. It can be quite a challenge to enjoy seafood in our landlocked region of the United States. Whether you love seafood, or if you want to profit from the health-related benefits of eating wild fish, you’re lucky to find fish that tastes fresh. It’s even harder to find quality fish that you can trust is wild-caught, and that you can trust is sustainable. Homer, Alaska native Arron Kallenberg encountered a similar problem after moving to the New York area to pursue his career in the Tech industry. As a third-generation member of a commercial fishing family, he spent many summers helping to harvest sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay aboard his father’s fishing boat, the Mary K. His move to the East Coast showed him just how lucky he was to have regular access to a bounty of fresh, wild, and sustainable seafood back in Alaska. Similar to what you may experience in Colorado, Arron found that it was nearly impossible to find and buy high quality Alaskan seafood, no matter if he was in a restaurant or at a grocery store. This led him to found Wild Alaskan Company, a “digital fishmonger” subscription service. Arron combined his entrepreneurial experience in the tech world with his experience and connections in Alaska’s commercial fishing industry to bring this concept to life. The company’s values are rooted both in trust and in sustainability: no mislabeling, no “fish fraud,” and a guarantee that their seafood is always wild-caught and sustainably sourced. Wild Alaskan subscribers gain access to high-quality wild seafood like sockeye salmon, coho salmon, halibut, cod, scallops, and have it delivered right to their doorstep. The seafood is caught, processed, and frozen in the USA. It passes multiple quality assurance checks before being packed and shipped on dry ice to-order in an eco-friendly cooler.

Subscribers can choose between three curated boxes: Wild Salmon, Wild White Fish, or Wild Combo. They pick a box size that contains either 12 or 24 packages of fish, with one 6oz serving per package, and choose to have it shipped either monthly or every other month. The pricing comes out to either $10.99 or $9.99 per serving, depending on the order size. The species that are shipped in each box depends on what Arron and his team are able to source every month. Wild Salmon boxes typically contain sockeye and coho, Wild White Fish boxes contain a combination of halibut, cod, and sometimes rockfish or pollock, and Wild Combo boxes offer an assortment of salmon and white fish. Orders can be supplemented with “add-ons” for an additional cost, including sablefish (commonly known as “Black Cod”), smoked salmon, and scallops. These additional selections rotate depending on availability. Members of Wild Alaskan don’t just gain access to quality seafood. Breanna Pittman Miss Pueblo County She is as Beautiful on the Inside as She is on the Outside!

My name is Breanna Pittman, and I am Miss Pueblo County and Miss Talent 2019. I was born and raised in Pueblo and graduated from East High School, where I was on the tennis team and in the advanced acapella choir, "The Tone Troopers." After graduating from East High in 2015, I continued my education at Colorado State University-Pueblo, where I graduated in May 2019 with a BSBA in Business Management and a B.S. in Political Science. At the age of three, I began tap dance classes at Sarah Shaw Dance Studios, and as the years went on, I picked up river dance and hip-hop dancing. When I graduated high school, my time as a Sarah Shaw dancer, unfortunately, ended, but I continued to dance when I got involved in the Miss Pueblo County Scholarship Pageant. I competed in the pageant for the first time in 2016 and continued to compete every year since. I have been the reigning talent winner for three years in a row. The best part about this pageant is that the focus isn't on beauty, it's on education, community service, and volunteering. We get involved in the community as much as possible, helping with events for multiple organizations, volunteering at different shows at the Sangre De Cristo Arts Center, and many other events in our wonderful town. My future desire is to become involved in the political culture in Pueblo and finding ways to help better my community. Being Miss Pueblo County has opened many doors for me and has introduced me to many influential people in town, which will help me achieve my long term goals, and I will be forever grateful. I would like to encourage young ladies to participate in this pageant because it helps teach the importance of community involvement, time management, friendship, and most importantly, it focuses on internal beauty.

A few words from pageant director C. C. Wood As we celebrate our 20th year anniversary we invite you to enter the Miss Pueblo Pageant. We are pleased to announce that we have opened the pageant to anyone living in the State of Colorado. Just think of the excitement and glamour as you walk across the stage in your beautiful evening gown with the spotlight and applause all for you! You could be crowned the next Queen in your division! The Miss Pueblo County Pageant system encourages and reinforces the confidence and natural beauty that is within each girl. The events are family-oriented and age-appropriate. You will find that many of the participants, and winners, in our pageants have never competed in a pageant before! Through fun rehearsals and activities on pageant weekend, each contestant will gain a new sense of self-esteem, teamwork, and appreciation for her family. The Miss Pueblo Pageant helps each girl to develop poise, self-confidence and the ability to express herself while striving to reinforce the teachings of her home and school; and at the same time giving her a chance to fulfill one of her most glamorous dreams! Get started today by submitting an online application and to receive all the information you need to become a contestant! The venue for the pageant is the Sangre De Cristo Arts Center. Location & details along with a registration packet will be provided once the contestant has submitted a registration/ application form and paid the registration fee of $50.00. www. misspueblopageant.com If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 719-369-9751.

same day if needed. In our newly expanded facility, we are also to provide a wide range of Women’s Health Care Services in our Office. We are offering services such as Annual WellWomen Gynecological Exams, Breast Exams, Cervical Cancer Screenings, Contraceptive Counseling, Pap Testing, STD Testing, Family Planning, and Menopause Management.”

When you decided to put your health in Zsuzsa Glasscock’s hands, you will immediately become her number one priority. At Advanced Practice Primary Care and Headache Clinic, you will be treated with respect, and your opinions and concerns will be heard. You will be given the time to ask questions, and the explanations to your question will be provided to you in a manner that you will understand.

A specialty at the clinic is headache care. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, a Migraine is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world and the 6th most disabling illness in the world. Zsuzsa added, “There isn’t an actual headache clinic for many miles. The closest one that I know of is in Aurora, Colorado. As my patient, I will ask you to keep a headache diary. Keeping a journal will help us to determine the trend of headaches. I will also order the necessary blood work to rule out any other cause for the problems and review any additional diagnostic testing the patient may have already had. I will evaluate all the information, so the patient receives an optimized treatment plan. In my practice, I am using an exceptional treatment which includes a nerve block. This is a simple procedure that has been very successful in the treatment of chronic migraines. This option requires 12 treatments over six weeks. It is fast and painless treatment with an efficacy rate of over 90%. In many cases, this treatment is covered by Medicaid and insurance.”

Located on the Northside of Pueblo, the newly expanded facility welcomes patients of all ages from pediatrics through adults. The facility accepts same-day appointments, offers an On-Site lab, and accepts many insurance plans, including Medicaid. Zsuzsa, a Doctorate prepared Family nurse practitioner, completed her academics in the state of New York and moved to Colorado in 2017. Zsuzsa spoke of Pueblo and our need for more health care, “There are many excellent facilities in Pueblo, but they are at capacity, and many times a Medicaid patient will have to wait several weeks for an appointment. Because we are a new facility, we can see our patients on the

The well-versed team at APPC have also collaborated with a mental health profession and are offering mental health services and support groups. And as an added benefit, Zsuzsa has recently added Pharmaceutical Weight Management and Aesthetic/ Cosmetic Botox to her list of added services. Zsuzsa stated, “My Philosophy of medicine is to treat the patient, not the symptoms as there is always an underlying condition for every sickness. Through a unique approach to medicine, I try viewing each patient rather than a single symptom to be treated. The providers at APPC are committed to providing you and your family with the most comprehensive healthcare with as many services as possible being offered under one roof.”

Positive Youth Development: Engaging with Young People

Positive Youth Development (PYD) is an evidence-based approach that can be incorporated by those working and/or parenting youth. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recognizes this approach as best-practice to address teen-pregnancy, violence, and substance-use prevention. The approach sees young people as resources to cultivate, not problems to solve.

them. It combines adolescent development with five principles for action: 1. Strengths-Based: building on already existing strengths that a young person has. 2. Inclusive to all youth: addressing needs of all youth and being culturally responsive.

Angela Sillas-Green, PYD Training Facilitator for Pueblo County and an active member of Pueblo's Communities That Care states, "Adolescence is a time of transition. Young people are moving away from dependence of parents and into adulthood. This transition manifests as young people taking risks, spending more time with peers, and redefining their relationship with parents (i.e. questioning everything), identifying their value system, and shifting into abstract thinking. Youth are also experiencing significant physical changes." She adds, "Adults often see this as a time of disrespect, defiance, and may not recognize this as a part of normal development, akin to learning to walk in infancy. This means adults need to see they are no longer managers but rather consultants in a young person's life. In addition, young people need opportunities to practice and learn soft skills (like foresight, communication, and empathy)-youth cannot be expected to have completely mastered these skills at this stage. This is a paradigm shift for many adults."

3. Engage youth as partners: ensuring youth voices are heard in programs, policies, and practices that young people use. 4. Collaborative: youth are part of creating a solution in meaningful partnerships. 5. Sustainable: support of youth is ongoing (not just one and done). Implementing these principles is one goal of Communities That Care (CTC), a program of the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment. CTC is a community coalition, comprised of youth-serving professionals, community members, and young people. CTC's goal is to create community spaces for youth, improve quality child care systems in order to prevent youth substance-use, and create prosocial youth development. CTC provides free PYD trainings for adults to learn more about adolescent development and how to meaningfully engage with young people. To learn more about PYD, or getting involved with CTC, contact Sarah Martinez at sarah.martinez@pueblocounty.us 719-583-4996.

Positive Youth Development prepares adults for this shift and helps adults' partner with young people instead of powering over
