The Queen is dead. Long live the King.

Queen Elizabeth was 96 years old and had been on the throne for more than 70 years. For Canadians, she was our longest-reigning Sovereign. Her eldest son, Charles, immediately became King and will be known as King Charles III and his wife, Camilla, the Queen Consort. Prince William is next in line for the throne.

year. The couple had four children and the family has now grown to eight grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.Formanyof us, Queen Elizabeth has been the only reigning monarch we’ve ever known. Always appearing impeccably dressed and self-assured, she portrayed grace and elegance and, definitely, a Royal bearing. Scandals and rumours over the years related to the Royal Family actually put a more human face on the monarchy.Whether you are a monarchist or not, the world had a deep respect, admiration and affection for the Queen. Through wars, a pandemic, tragedies and family scandals Queen Elizabeth was a symbol of strength. In public, she always exuded an air of confidence. Her annual Christmas message was watched throughout the Commonwealth and beyond. She will be missed.

Elizabeth became Queen in 1952 at the age of 25 after the death of her father, King George V. In 1947, she married Prince Philip who remained by her side until his death last

This is a much different editorial than my usual rantings. As we were preparing the paper today, it was announced that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Earlier today, news was spreading of the Queen’s rapidly declining health, her family rushing to be at her bedside.

“This funding is great news for communities in Kawartha Lakes and a critical first step in getting the new Summit Wellness Centre underway in Coboconk,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock. “We’re one step closer to being able to provide important health care services closer to home and all under one roof”.

The Diggin’ Downtown Omemee construction project is set to start the week of September 12, 2022. The scope of the project is a full reconstruction of King Street (HWY 7) in downtown Omemee including; replacements of storm sewers, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and streetscape improvements.

As previously announced, the project will be substantially funded by the Ministry of Transportation’s 2022-23 Connecting Links Program, with the municipality funding the remaining costs.

“Patients and community residents will have more accessible and higher quality care in one centralized location,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “With this investment, we’re continuing to ensure that patients and families have access to the high-quality care they deserve, right in theirThecommunity.”Summit

Wellness Centre will promote collaboration between the Kawartha North Family Health and other health service providers to improve access to high-quality, timely community-based programs and services

“The Summit Wellness Centre will be a hub for community health and community space for the under-served northern areas of Kawartha Lakes”, said Ian Forster, Chair of the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce. “By working together with other community organizations and the Kawartha North Family Health Team, the Centre will deliver a range of vital wellness services to the community.”

This expansion will enhance the community’s ability to provide care to patients and to expand health and wellness promotion to the surrounding communities in the northern part of the Kawartha Lakes. This will help alleviate the strain on existing health care services including the emergency departments in these communities where many residents are currently seeking care that could be treated in a primary care setting.“We are thrilled to be working with the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce on this initiative to expand much needed health and wellness services in the area,” said Marina Hodson, Executive Director Kawartha North FHT.

PROVINCE SUPPORTS

King Street, between James Street North and the Pigeon River bridge, will be down to one traffic lane only during construction.

Parks Canada has provided an update on the status of the Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge rehabilitation project. In recent weeks, new mechanical components and pedestrian decking installations have taken place on the bridge. The project team continues to have reopening of the Bridge scheduled during the fall of 2022, and Parks Canada continues to work closely with the Contractor to bring the project to its completion. Hydraulic equipment being manufactured for the Bridge is expected to arrive on site in September. Other remaining tasks include completion of concrete works on the bridge abutments, installation of the remaining mechanical components, installation of the vehicular bridge deck, hydraulic and electrical component installation, and paving. Commissioning of the bridge will follow.Thehealth and safety of Canadians, visitors, and Parks Canada team members are of the utmost importance to the Agency. Please obey lock staff regarding the safe movement of visitors and pedestrians on-site.The enhanced pedestrian access over the upper gates of Lock 32 and its access paths will continue to remain open until the bridge project has been completed.Parks Canada is leading this important infrastructure work to ensure safe, high-quality experiences for visitors by improving heritage, visitor, waterway, and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas, including along the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site.

OMEMEEDOWNTOWN

Residents and commuters may have seen the signage going up and equipment mobilizing but the expectation is that both lanes of King Street will remain open until construction begins the following week. Traffic travelling in the opposite direction will be detoured on Mary Street, which runs parallel to King.

The underground and ‘shave and pave’ work will take place throughout the fall. There will be a break over the winter and the project will pick back up in Spring 2023 with completion targeted for July 2023.

The Ontario government is investing $175,000 to support the planning for a new wellness centre that will include the services of the Kawartha North Family Health Team in partnership with the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce. Located in Coboconk, halfway between hospitals in Lindsay and Minden, the new wellness centre will help provide patients in the surrounding areas care in one location that is conveniently closer to home.

Local businesses will remain open during construction and we encourage residents and visitors to continue to support them throughout the

Forty-eight players will compete at this full-day event for the coveted titles of the 2022 Kawartha North Pickleball Scramble King and Queen. Volunteers from the Lions Club of Bobcaygeon and local business owners and individuals will ensure the players have a full day with auctions and raffles going on throughout the day. The public is welcome to come and watch some of our area’s better pickleball players.

The Grove Theatre is collaborating with Mississauga Ojibway carver and painter R. Kris Nahrgang in the creation of three story poles to be installed at the amphitheatre.

THE GROVE COLLABORATES WITH INDIGENOUS ARTIST

“It was very inspiring,” says Armstrong. “Kris felt very moved by the site. He loves what has been built to date. He felt that the poles would honour the long, yet seldom told, history and presence of many Indigenous Nations in the region.”

With no funding from the Ministry of Health all costs, including salaries for the Nurse Practitioner, Nurse and Medical Receptionist must be covered through events and donations from individuals.

Adding relevant works of art to the space has long been an intention for the theatre, and The Grove is honoured to have Nahrgang creating its first major installation.Spearheaded by the McMullen family and Fenelon

Kick-starting the fundraising for this event Platinum Sponsors Heather Topping, a realtor with Royal LePage FRANK, along Fernando Paiz owner of Caygeon Denture Clinic and Dave Roberts of the Bobcaygeon Lions Club presented cheques to Marina Hodson, Executive Director of Kawartha North Family Health Team.

Kawartha North Family Health Team’s 3rd annual fundraising Pickleball Scramble will be held on Thursday, September 15 at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club. All money raised at the event will be directed to the ongoing operation of their Walk-In Clinics in Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls.

Nahrgang explains that a story pole differs from the perhaps more familiar totem pole in that the latter relates a story about a person or persons, and is a traditionally West Coast art form. Story poles are a carving with objects about the subject’s—whether family, community, or an organization—cultural or moral beliefs, or the issues they are representing. In carving something that relates to The Grove, Kris considers the theatre’s core values of community, excellence, inclusion, and stewardship, as well as the relation to the land it is on.

• A Medicine Wheel: Painted in four colours—red, yellow, black, and white—representing the four colours of people. “We are all here and all one people,” says Nahrgang.

• An Eagle/Eagle Feathers: “The eagle flies above us and stands between the real world and the creator and speaks to the creator and tells him how we are doing,” explains Nahrgang. Eagle Feathers representing healing. “The world has come through a tumultuous time but is beginning to heal.”

The Grove Theatre three-pole vignette will consist of one 15’ pole and two smaller poles of 6’ and 8’. The poles will be hand carved from local white cedar trees and will include Indigenous carvings and universal symbols:

in the Indigenous Woodland style, and therefore representing both cultures.

Created under the auspices of the Kawartha Works Community Co-op, with initial funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and additional support from members of the local community, the amphitheatre was conceived to engage and inspire both visitors and local residents.

In order to gain as much input from the community as possible, the City of Kawartha Lakes has extended the Round 1 engagement activities for the Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP).

The online engagement part of the project will now end at the end of September in order to capture input from school going children and their parents, young adults and those who are resuming their regular routine with the start of the school year this Fall.

Please spread the word to your neighbors, and family members to take part in the online surveys and activities to help move to the next stage of this project!

It is Nahrgang’s hope that the poles and garden will have people think of their neighbour and the world in another way: connected to one another, and to nature. “Art is created to speak a truth; anything that brings us together as people is needed.”

An interest in creating a garden that reflects plants of cultural significance to local First Nations communities, spearheaded by the Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society Youth Group, adds another dimension to the project. The youth are excited to be involved with the project, and see the site, which has a background of mature cedar trees and will be surrounded with limestone seating, as a future community gathering spot for various occasions.

Kris Nahrgang is a Status, Mississauga Ojibway Treaty Indian – status held at Curve Lake. With growing recognition of his work across Canada and the world, Kris’s work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections, including Anne Murray, Bill Cosby, Justin Trudeau, Keech Rainwater (of Lonestar), Nik Antropov (Atlanta Thrashers), Brian Skinner (Phoenix Suns). He is also the creator of the Canadian National Exhibition “Unity Pole.”

Prior to starting our Phase 2 activities, they want to ensure that they get maximum participation in the surveys, vision statement, and interactive map, in order to identify community recommendations for the Kawartha Lakes active transportation network. The map tool in particular, allows participants to add their favourite cycling route or point out specific roads or areas that are in need of active transportation space.

Active Transportation typically refers to humanpowered, non-vehicular modes of travel that includes walking, cycling (including cargo bikes, hand pedal bikes), rollerblading or roller-skating and scooters. Accessibility is a key consideration of our project, so we will also be evaluating how to better accommodate users of mobility aid devices and electric bicycles.

FENELON MOURNS AND CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF RANDY MEREDITH

by Max Miller

A large group of family and friends gathered to say goodbye to the owner of ‘Grr8finds Markets’ in a variety of outfits to honour Randy’s ‘Wacky Wednesdays”. Well known and well loved. I always dropped in whenever I travelled to Fenelon Falls. Wacky and wonderful, smart and compassionate, gifted and genuine. A beacon for so many with a haven for acceptance. He will be sorely missed. A celebration of life will take place at The Grove Theatre, 27 Veteran’s Way Fenelon Falls on September 18, 2022 at 6pm.
