ONTARIO HEALTH TEAM

Residents of the City of Kawartha Lakes are one step closer to experiencing more connected care in our community, as several health and service providers have been working together to form the Kawartha Lakes Ontario Health Team (KL-OHT). The KL-OHT received its official designation from the Ministry of Health earlier this month, which signals that the team can move forward with plans to support a better patient experience, and support providers in delivering more efficient and effective care. Key goals of the team include working together to reduce wait times between care settings, focusing on preventative health measures, and providing more virtual and digital health tools to help all residents, especially those in rural settings, access the care and services they need. “We’re excited to reach the milestone of becoming a fully designated OHT, but most importantly, we’re excited to be able to get to work and create a connected health care system that puts patients first,” said Barb Mildon, CEO, Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes. “Local physicians, patient partners and providers have united to form a strong partnership to co-design a seamless and integrated Kawartha Lakes healthcare system. Work is underway to advance care navigation and improve access to digital care across the region,” says Veronica Nelson, VP & Chief Operating Officer, Ross Memorial Hospital. “This is exciting news for our local health partners and community members,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton- Kawartha Lakes- Brock. “The new Kawartha Lakes Ontario Health Team will focus on preventative health measures and providing more virtual and digital health tools contributing to more patient-focused care and reduced wait times.”

ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR COMMUNITY GARDEN

Submitted by Mallory Cramp-Waldinsperger

United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes has announced that the cumulative total of produce donated from Edwin Binney’s Community Garden 2020 was over 12,700 lbs. Produce from the garden reached 1,315 individuals across the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton through food banks and community organizations. An additional 275 participants received produce through three pilot projects; Fresh Produce Friday, which served three housing communities in partnership with the City of Kawartha Lakes; Garden at Your Table, which delivered produce in collaboration with Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes; and Haliburton FoodLove in partnership with HHHS Community Programs. The garden has more than doubled last year’s total yield of 5,500 lbs. This year, the size of the plowed area was expanded to produce larger yields, and multiple crops were planted in succession throughout the season. With funding from Tree Canada, UWCKL and Fleming College planted over 100 fruit trees at the garden earlier this month. Their team is anticipating even greater yields and more variety due to the addition of this orchard for years to come. The ongoing development of partnerships has brought incredible dedicated experts together for the past several years to help design Edwin Binney’s Community Garden. In its second season, this unique agricultural food security initiative and education centre has yielded far more than anticipated by the main partners, Crayola Canada, Fleming College and UWCKL. Penny Barton Dyke, Executive Director of UWCKL, says, “Seniors, families, and those who found themselves more isolated during this time were able to receive healthy fresh food. We are grateful to our donors and supporters especially during who made it possible to ramp up our production.”

COVID-19 VACCINE TASK FORCE

The Ontario government has announced the creation of the Ministers’ COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force, building on the steps the government has been taking to prepare for the delivery of a vaccine. The task force will advise the province’s development and implementation of an immunization program, including the ethical, timely and effective distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Ontario. Rick Hillier, former Chief of Defence Staff for the Canadian Forces and Commander of the NATO-led forces during the War in Afghanistan, has been named Chair of this new task force, leading the largest vaccine rollout in a generation. “The fact that we are setting up this task force is a sign that we are making progress in the fight against COVID-19,” said Premier Doug Ford. “We still have a long way to go, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That’s why I have asked General Hillier to lead this effort, because we need the best of the best for the monumental task at hand. I am confident he will bring the same disciplined leadership and military precision needed to execute one of the largest logistical undertakings our province has ever faced.” The COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force members will include cross-government and external representation with diverse expertise in operations and logistics, federal-provincial relations, health and clinical domains, public health and immunization, ethics, and information technology and data. The task force will provide advice and recommendations on the timely and efficient execution of Ontario’s COVID-19 immunization program. It will ensure the province can immunize people as quickly and safely as possible, as the various vaccines in development become available. The province is planning the early rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine program with vaccines from both Pfizer and Moderna. Planning is already underway with federal and provincial partners to prepare for the receipt and rollout of the vaccine. Confirmed allocations of the number of doses and schedules for delivery to Ontario is expected shortly. The government will provide updates as more details are available.

STAYING SAFE THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS

The holidays are going to look a little different this year due to COVID-19. To support Ontarians as they begin to safely plan for the season, the Ontario government, based on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and input from the Public Health Measures Table, is providing preliminary guidance on how to safely celebrate this year and protect your loved ones. “I know there are many people looking forward to their traditional family celebrations at this time of year, but to keep your loved ones safe, traditions will have to be adjusted,” said Premier Doug Ford. “We’re asking everyone to please stick to your own household when celebrating. Avoid big holiday parties or large family

dinners to help us stop the spread of this deadly virus. By following this public health advice, we can all have a safe and fun holiday season.” No matter where you live in the province, the safest way to spend the holidays this year is by only celebrating in person with the people you live with and celebrating virtually with everyone else. If you live alone, consider exclusively celebrating with one additional household as a safe way to spend the holidays.

BCC AWARDS FOUNDER’S CUP

Every year the Buckhorn Community Centre (BCC) pays tribute to a volunteer who has made a special contribution by presenting them the Founder’s Cup. In 2020, the BCC decided to honour not just one but 6 people who have given countless hours of volunteer time and shared their many talents over many years. “2020 was such an unusual year and many of us had opportunities to reflect on people we’re grateful to,” says Judy McWhirter, General Manager. “We thought it was a perfect time to thank three couples who have given the BCC so much, and helped make it the special place it is today.” Since it was not possible to safely have a large, indoor celebration, the BCC conducted 3 porch ceremonies at each couple’s home. They were presented with a certificate for lifetime contributions and a handmade door wreath. Their names will be added to the Founder’s Cup which is proudly displayed in a cabinet inside the main door of the BCC. “The vision these folks had for a community centre with recreational and sports programs, as well as cultural and social events continues to inspire the BCC today,” says Bill Kent, President of the Board of Directors. “All three couples made significant contributions to the BCC and we are very grateful for their incredible long-term support. We sincerely thank each one of them for putting their stamp on our community centre.” John & Irene Bannon John and Irene were part of the group of residents who decided that Buckhorn needed a new community centre. In 1976, they sold the land on which the BCC was built for $1,000. Together with other founding members, they put their home up as collateral to fund the mortgage for the original building. Irene and John gave many hours of their time volunteering at various events including: Bingo, dances, Board of Directors and organizing and working at the Buckhorn Festival of the Arts. at the last Art Festival. Everyone who enjoys programs and events at the BCC can thank the Bannons and other founding members for taking a chance and making a long-term investment in our community. Don and Shirley Logan Don and Shirley volunteered at many events at the BCC over the years. Shirley initiated Fiesta Buckhorn and was Co-Director of the Show. This event featuring wine, beer and food, was one of the most successful one-day shows in the Kawarthas. Over 2,000 people attended each year. Don is a gifted woodworker who handcrafted the showcase in the front lobby of the BCC and built a beautiful cedar strip canoe with volunteer Rob Gordon, which was raffled off as a fundraiser. When someone mentioned an idea for an item that would be useful, Don made it appear. Don and Shirley started the Bridge Club which grew and gained many new members who are now really missing not being able to play. Michael and Ellen Dumas Michael, a renowned wildlife artist, worked with Edwin Matthews to lay the groundwork for the Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival that first opened in 1978, now called the Buckhorn Festival of the Arts. In 1982 Michael donated 400 limited edition prints of a pheasant. These prints were sold as a fundraiser to purchase building materials to build pavillions in the backyard of the BCC for vendors to display. One of these prints now hangs in the BCC’s board room. Michael is still an active volunteer with the Festival of the Arts. Ellen has worked hard over the years to encourage local schools and students to display their artwork at the Buckhorn Festival of the Arts as well as teaching summer art camps for the youth at the BCC. She also contributes to events with children’s activities and has come up with some of the most amazing crafts for children to make and take home.

DEAR SANTA AT GLOBUS

Globus Theatre is delighted to present a live holiday play reading of “Dear Santa” by Norm Foster with children from the community performing alongside a cast of professional actors. Audiences can enjoy a delicious dinner and play reading in the evenings on November 27 and 28 and a festive dessert and play reading at a matinee on November 28 at the Lakeview Arts Barn in Bobcaygeon. In this hilarious festive offering, audiences will travel to the North Pole where a frazzled Santa Claus and his over-worked staff attempt to overcome a supply shortage with only a short time left until Christmas! With some romance blossoming amidst the presents, and a mission to fulfill a child’s special Christmas wish, Dear Santa is guaranteed to put a smile on even the biggest grinch! Artistic Director, Sarah Quick says, “Ordinarily our annual Panto includes any child who wants to get involved but, sadly, we are not able to put on a full-scale community show this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. With safety measures in place such as smaller cohorts for children; the use of masks; physical distancing practices for cast, staff, and patrons; and replacing live song with recordings, we were able to give opportunities to as many young performers as possible. The experience will be fun, safe and full of Christmas spirit!” Performances are November 27 at 6pm and November 28 at 2pm and 6pm.Tickets for the evening performances are $60 for adults and $45 for children. DRIVE-THROUGH MERRY & BRIGHT FESTIVAL

The Lindsay Agricultural Society (LAS) and the 2021 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) are pleased to announce the “Merry & Bright Festival” being held December 18 to 31 at the LEX Grounds. The drive-through festival of lights is a joint fundraiser for the Lindsay Agricultural Society, the Kawartha Lakes United Way, Kawartha Food Source, Lindsay Lions, the Lindsay and District Curling Club, and Heritage Christian School. IPM 2021 looks forward to the involvement of these same organizations at their fall 2021 event. Businesses, community groups, farms, and individual community members are invited to set up a light display at the LEX Grounds. Entries can range from a traditional parade float, to farm machinery decked out with Christmas lights, to any idea that celebrates the theme “Christmas on the Farm” and is illuminated. The festival will conclude with a pyromusical fireworks show on New Year’s Eve. “If you would have normally put a float in the Santa Claus Parade or have always wanted to participate in a tractor parade of lights, this is your opportunity to show off your creativity,” said Harry Stoddart, GM of the LEX. “You could potentially win some prizes, and support a number of great local organizations while creating a bright spot for the community - all in a COVID safe manner.” “Christmas is a time of hope,” said Sheila Marshall, President of the Ontario Plowmen’s Association. “We invite you and your family to enjoy the magic and joy to be found at The Merry & Bright Festival….and return to experience the IPM in October 2021.” “Through the generosity of the Ontario Government’s Celebrate Ontario grant program, the IPM is proud to partner in this great opportunity. ‘Christmas On The Farm’ will light the way for a memorable event to be held at the LEX and surrounding farms in October 2021,” said Cathy Lasby, Executive Director of the Ontario Plowmen’s Association. Visit lindsayex.com to learn more about entering the festival and to buy tickets. Tickets must be purchased online and in advance.

MUSIC COUNCIL NOTES

Submitted by April Scott

It’s that time of year when the Music Council would like to wish you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year. 2020 has been a very perplexing year for everyone. We have had to learn many different ways to live in a Pandemic world -- one of them being living without our Concerts In The Park and our Music Alive series. However, we live in hope that in 2021 we will be able to return. The Council Board has been meeting regularly once a month via conference calls so that they can keep abreast of the changing times. Fortunately when we had to cancel the Concert in the Park performers, they were kind enough to roll their concerts over until

2021. So when we get the word everything will be in place. On that note we send seasons greetings to one and all…think positive and all will be well…just keep those fingers (and toes) crossed.

ICE CREAM RECALL

From Kawartha Dairy’s Facebook page

We wanted to let you know that Kawartha Dairy is voluntarily withdrawing a limited number of two flavours of ice cream, after we detected the possibility of small metal pieces in the chocolate chips provided by one of our suppliers. The potential metal pieces are very small and have a very low risk of posing a choking hazard. The affected products and production codes, printed on the edge of the lid, are: • Mint Chip 1.5L PRD 13/10/2020 and 14/10/2020 • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough 1.5L PRD 03/11/2020 and 04/11/2020 No other flavours of ice cream are involved, and the withdrawal is limited to the production codes above. We are making this voluntary withdrawal out of an abundance of caution, because the safety of our customers and your confidence in our products has always been our number one priority. Kawartha Dairy has not received any consumer complaints regarding this issue and no injuries have been reported. Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it and can return it to where purchased for a full refund. Alternatively, you can contact us at info@ kawarthadairy.com for a full refund or if you have any further questions. We deeply regret this situation and apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HOLIDAY SEASON

At The Kawartha Promoter, we’re proud of our commitment to community organizations and their events. During these unprecedented times, we’ve seen organizers taking a new approach to presenting their events to maintain physical distancing and keeping their audiences safe. This holiday season, that will continue to be the case. But we want to make sure people know what you’re doing to raise funds to keep your organizations alive. So please send information to us at editor@thepromoter.ca so we can help! We’ve got three issues dedicated to the holidays this year – November 27, December 11 and December 18. Your local business can help us by advertising to let your customers and potential customers know you’re open ... and community organizations can take advantage of these special issues to let people know how they can help you finish strong in 2020.

It’s a free event, but you are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation for the local food bank. You can reach the elves at the BCC at 705-6578833.

CHORISTERS’ CORNER

Submitted by April Scott

The Choristers would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year. 2020 has been a year of disappointments and certainly for the Choristers. They are all missing the weekly practices and the camaraderie that goes with them. Not to mention the concerts that they bring to you. Our committee met recently and was decided that we would donate $200 each to both the Bobcaygeon Food Bank and Fenelon Falls Salvation Army. Both organizations are part of the Kawartha Lakes Food Drive. At this time of year we usually celebrate with a Christmas Party where we hold a Toy drive for any organization needing them. This year Choristers will be forwarding personal cash donations to the Food Bank who will purchase the toys. Unfortunately, there will not be a sale of Christmas shortbreads. Sorry folks, you will have to make your own! We are hopeful that sometime in 2021, we will be able to return. As soon as we know, we will let you know. On a different topic, we were sad to hear that Vivian, our accompanist, has retired. Therefore, once we are up and running again, we will be seeking an accomplished piano player to take her place. Until next year, we send Season’s greetings.

BOBCAYGEON 2020 CHRISTMAS SALE

Submitted by Gwendolyn Pelley

The thing we all love about Bobcaygeon is the love and support that comes out of our community. It is filled with home-based businesses that rely on markets to advertise and sell their products. These markets give the vendor a temporary store front for the duration of the event. I wanted to create a space where our community could safely support our home-based businesses during these unprecedented times. This online space allows vendors to come together and showcase their products. Each vendor has made a cash donation to participate in our Christmas Online Sale Group. They have also each donated an item for a draw. Every purchase gets you an entry. So far, we have raised $600 that will go to our local food bank, just in time for Christmas. You can support our Vendors and join in on the fun by connecting with our facebook group BOBCAYGEON 2020 CHRISTMAS SALE.

The Ontario government is delivering on its commitment to maintain the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) program envelope and structure for 2021. Municipalities in Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock will receive $15,671,800 in funding allocations to provide them with flexibility to address the needs of their communities, based on their own local priorities. The OMPF is the Province’s main general assistance grant, that supports 389 municipalities, with a special emphasis on northern and rural communities. “The OMPF is an important source of revenue for municipalities in HKLB and our government will continue to support the economic recovery through this local, stable, and adaptable funding,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. This more than $15.6 million in funding is in addition to the over $8 million in provincial assistance for the first round of emergency funding under the Safe Restart Agreement which was provided to local communities across Haliburton-Kawartha Lake-Brock in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. The Ontario government, in partnership with the federal government, is providing up to $4 billion in one-time assistance to Ontario’s municipalities and transit systems as part of the Safe Restart Agreement.

Horoscopes

November 27 to December 10 By Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) “Strive for excellence, not perfection.” Aquarius, try not to judge yourself too harshly, especially in relation to others. No one, including you, will ever reach perfection, so just do your best. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Never underestimate the power of good manners, dear Pisces. They go a long way towards showing the world what kind of person you are. Aries (March 21 to April 20) Aries, we must all learn to respect the beliefs of others, even though they are not our beliefs. This is often easier said than done. But as long as there is no harm associated with their way of thinking, keep your thoughts to yourself. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) There are many things you can do, Taurus, that fall in the realm of ‘self-care’. But one, in particular, isn’t usually mentioned when we speak about it. And that is: stop caring about what other people think of you! Try it. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Will Cupid’s arrow find a way towards you this festive season, dear Gemini? Quite possibly! A new love, or perhaps an old love revisited, will surely warm your heart. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Don’t forget the power of humour, and lots of laughter, to lighten your load, Cancer, on a hard day. It can be one of the best antidotes to trying times.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Transitions are happening, Leo! Whether it’s a move to a new home, or a new job, or new friends, you are in for some interesting times in the days ahead, my friend. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Value your achievements, Virgo, because they show the world and yourself just what you are capable of doing. Keep them in mind when the going gets tough -- there are many to look back upon! Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) It’s a busy world out there, Libra, and it’s about to get a whole lot busier with the holiday season almost upon us. We suggest you take one hour a day to “turn off”. No devices, no chores. Quiet yourself. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) As the full moon rises Nov. 30, we are reminded of its symbolism held by the Indigenous people of this land. It is known as the freezing moon. As creatures everywhere busy themselves to prepare for the cold, harsh winter, we, too, are told to prepare for our spiritual path through the darkness to light. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) “You can’t give up your passion if things don’t work right away. You can’t lose heart or grow cynical if there are twists and turns on your journey.”: Barack Obama. There will be many twists and turns for you, Sag, along the way, and a heartache or two as well. Whatever happens, you must not give up. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) You may find yourself “giving your all” to make as much money as can for the holidays. But it will all be for naught if your health suffers because of it. Don’t be foolish - be careful.
