OVER THE BACK FENCE

I want to start by once again thanking all those who are working to help us get through this pandemic – from hospital workers, doctors and nurses, paramedics, police and firefighters to employees in grocery stores, restaurants doing takeout and businesses who have and are retooling to produce protective equipment. In addition, businesses and individuals who are contributing money and time to organizations who need our support, especially during these times when fundraising is a challenge. I know there are many fulltime residents who were skeptical of allowing seasonal residents and cottage owners to make the trip to our area. I noticed a lot more traffic here in Buckhorn, more cars at the grocery store and lots of action at the local LCBO especially on the long weekend. I have no problem with these folks, who are, after all, taxpayers, visiting their summer homes. Where I take issue is when they don’t follow the

current rules – staying in place and staying their distance. I also have a bone to pick with any of them who are rude to staff at any of our businesses. Everyone up here is doing their best to ensure the shelves are stocked and the doors are open whenever possible. But there are limitations in supply of some items and we just have to accept that. For however long it takes. And nothing you can say is going to change that. But your words can make or break someone’s day. Please be kind. The TSW is opening this weekend. I’m glad the boaters will have a chance to get out on the water and travel through the locks. But again, please do it safely. Maintain your distance and please, be kind. If there’s one thing this time off has given us, it’s an appreciation for what we have. Relish the smell of the fresh air, the sound of birds singing and the true beauty of where we live. It’s going to be up to all of us to come out of this safely so we need to keep doing our physical distancing, mask wearing and hand washing. We will get through this together and stronger.

CITY PREPARES FOR RECOVERY

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

From Andy Letham, Mayor, City of Kawartha Lakes

It’s another beautiful day and although we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, it’s nice to be able to focus on positive things such as the weather. We have done a lot of work to safe guard our public areas by placing signage and distancing measures. We have also made calls to cancel events that cannot be held in a safe manner, such as our annual Concerts in the Park or the Lindsay Milk Run. A lot of others are also following suit, such as the postponement of the International Plowing Match and most of our local fairs to 2021. This reinforces the role of the responsibility everyone is taking to put safety as our number one priority. We support that. The Trent Severn Waterway has just announced that they will be opening their waterways effective June 1, offering basic services such as access to the locks and boat launches and day-use areas, including green spaces, picnic areas, and parking lots. They will also have strict policies in place, such as a limit on visitors allowed and cleaning protocols while using their public washrooms. With the locks opening and the weather improving, we will continue to see more and more people coming to Kawartha Lakes. And that’s okay…We support all community members and want to ensure that everyone is being respectful to one another – whether that means being a friendly neighbour to everyone in our community, or supporting our economy by shopping local. I know over the past 10 weeks you’ve probably been shopping online because everything was closed, but now more than ever our businesses need local support. Take a moment out of your day and safely visit your favourite store, if they’re open, or check out some of the neat things our local retailers have been doing online. Ultimately, we are relying on everyone’s common sense to move forward. The responsible decisions that you continue to make have made a difference in our area and will continue to do so. It’s okay to enjoy the outdoors, it’s part of the beauty of living or visiting here, let’s continue to do so responsibly and respectfully. I know you’ve heard this before, but we really are all in this together. Thank you. 4

While the province remains in a state of emergency until at least June 9, Kawartha Lakes is starting to turn its focus toward recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. At the May 26 Special Council meeting, two task forces were outlined to help restore the community both financially and socially: an Economic Recovery Task Force and a Community Pandemic Recovery Task Force. “This pandemic has had far-reaching impacts on virtually all aspects of our lives,” said Mayor Letham. “While continuing our response efforts, it is time we begin to shift gears and focus on getting our community back on its feet. Working collaboratively with the community, these task forces will play a key role in leading that recovery.”

Economic Recovery

The Economic Recovery Task Force is focused on stimulating local economic and business recovery, across three strategic areas: critical infrastructure investments, planning and development stimulus and business recovery and support. The task force will consist of Mayor Letham, Deputy Mayor O’Reilly, Councillor Seymour-Fagan, Councillor Veale, City staff and representatives of the infrastructure, development and business community. Aligning with local businesses, the task force will prioritize its efforts based off more than 500 responses received from the municipality’s business survey and work closely with Team Kawartha Lakes, which consists of members of Kawartha Lakes’ leading business organizations. “In the past couple months our local businesses have faced a lot of unprecedented challenges,” said Deputy Mayor O’Reilly. “Many have made tremendous efforts to adapt their business processes and support our essential workers in the response to COVID-19, but it’s not enough. We want to support them further and work toward economic recovery by partnering strategically.” “As a business owner myself, I understand the need for vital resources and support for local businesses at

this time,” said Councillor Seymour-Fagan. Information and public engagement for the task forces will be posted on Jump In, Kawartha Lakes, the City’s online engagement tool. Register now to receive information as it becomes available.

Community Pandemic Recovery

Council has also established a task force to provide advice on resources and support to help facilitate the community and social recovery from the pandemic. Support will include non-profit and community services in the health and human services sector, recommendations for partnerships and working groups and the exploration of funding opportunities. Members of the task force will include Councillor Richardson, Councillor Elmslie, Councillor Ashmore, Councillor Dunn, City staff and other community representatives to address the needs of specific sectors. “Kawartha Lakes is home to a variety of vibrant communities,” said Councillor Richardson. “As we look toward recovery, it’s important we keep all members of our community and the services they depend on top of mind to ensure we maintain quality of life. The work of this task force is critical, not only to the health of Kawartha Lakes in the short-term, but also to creating a sustainable future for all residents for years to come.” Updates and information from this task force will also be shared on Jump In, Kawartha Lakes. To support residents and businesses in accessing information regarding financial and food and community supports, Financial Help and Food and Community Supports webpages have already been created.

orders in place. “We need to continue to move forward in a slow and steady manner,” commented CAO Taylor. “One of the most critical aspects of our recovery plan is to make sure our decisions comply with all safety standards and regulations. We are working directly with community partners for advice, including the Ministry of Labour and Bargaining units, to carefully make the right decisions before taking any action.” During his presentation, Taylor first covered the journey the municipality has taken since the pandemic began, including a list of provincial mandates and closures enforced. Due to physical distancing complications, Kawartha Lakes has decided to review all events up until August 2020 and has made the decision to cancel and or postpone the following: • Lindsay Milk Run • Concerts in the Park • Spring and Summer Aquatics, Fitness and Recreation programs • City-led summer camps • Canada Day gatherings and events City Council regrets the impact the cancellation of seasonal events will have on residents’ social, physical and child care needs. The revenue loss to the municipality is expected to be approximately $3.2 million. “It’s all a balancing act,” commented CAO Taylor. “Our first priority are the needs and safety of the public and staff, but we also have to balance our limited resources and maintain financial sustainability. In the immediate term, we need to make sure we’re not spending where we don’t need to so that we ensure we have resources to better recover in the longer term, and even into 2021.” A more detailed report on financial recovery will be coming to the Committee of the Whole meeting on June 9.

As local ‘do it yourself’ experts, the owners of Rustically Signed in Lindsay knew that if they wanted to help frontline caregivers protect the community from COVID-19, putting their talents to work would make good things happen. Knowing that people would be looking for ways to pass their time at home while practicing physical distancing, Steph Buckley and Holly Suddick launched a promotion that raised funds for the Heroes At Heart effort through sales of their Do It Yourself (DIY) Kits. The response was inspiring. With customers eager to support the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation through their crafting purchases, Rustically Signed was able to donate $1,246. “We receive so much support from our community, we just wanted to give back,” said Steph Buckley. “Leave it to the owners of Rustically Signed to find a

EMERGENCY COMMUNITY SUPPORT FUND

United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes is accepting funding applications for the Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF). The fund provides financial support to charities and other qualified donees adapting their frontline services to support vulnerable Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ECSF was announced by the Government of Canada and is administered in collaboration with United Way Centraide Canada, Community Foundations of Canada and the Canadian Red Cross. United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes is proud to support the important investment of $281,682 into local communities. “Canadian charities and not for profits are always there to help you, in your time of need. But the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing real challenges to these important organizations,” said The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. “The impact of this investment is threefold,” writes Penny Barton Dyke, Executive Director of UWCKL. “Organizations in our area will be able to help people, especially citizens at risk, with some supports more rapidly; assist in connecting people to agencies that will help them now and going forward; and lastly help strengthen the capacity of our community by working collaboratively.” Organizations interested in applying can visit United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes’ COVID-19 webpage at http://ckl-unitedway.ca/covid-19/ to confirm that they are eligible. Applications for funding can be completed using the template on the webpage. Grant recipients will be required to measure the outcomes of their program. Grants will range from $5,000 to $20,000 per program, and any organizations seeking funding for multiple programs are required to submit a separate application for each.

EMERGENCY ORDERS EXTENDED

The Ontario government continues to protect the health and safety of the public during the COVID-19 outbreak by extending all emergency orders in force under s.7.0.2 (4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. Current emergency orders include the closure of outdoor playgrounds, play structures and equipment, public swimming pools and outdoor water facilities, as well as bars and restaurants except for takeout and delivery. Additionally, there continues to be restrictions on social gatherings of more than five people, and staff redeployment rules remain in place for long-term care homes and congregate settings like retirement homes and women’s shelters. “We are extending these emergency orders to protect the health and safety of all individuals and families as we begin to gradually and safely reopen our province,” said Premier Doug Ford. “To build on the progress we have made to contain COVID-19, people should continue to follow these simple public health guidelines, practise physical distancing, wear a mask when it is a challenge to physical distance, and wash their hands regularly. If you think you have COVID-19 or may have been exposed to the virus, go to an assessment centre and get tested. Please stay safe.” See the full story on our website for the full list of emergency orders extended.

GOVERNMENT SPENDING TAKES A HIT

Federal government spending this year, which was already on track to be a new record high before the recession, is now expected to be 50.7 per cent more per Canadian than what Ottawa spent during the 2009 recession, finds a new study released recently by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank. “Prior to the economic shutdown in response to COVID-19, the federal government was planning to spend $9,306 per Canadian, the highest level ever in Canadian history,” said Jason Clemens, executive vicepresident of the Fraser Institute. The study, “Prime Ministers and Government Spending, Updated 2020 Edition”, tracks annual per person program spending (adjusted for inflation) by prime ministers since Confederation. It concludes that total per person spending in 2020 will reach $13,226, including $3,920 per Canadian in COVID-related spending (as of April 24, 2020). This represents a 46.6 per cent increase over the previous highest spending level reached in 2019 of $9,041. Again, to put 2020’s per-person spending of $13,226 in context, after adjusting for inflation, it is 50.7 per cent higher than per-person spending during the 2009 recession, and 74.5 per cent higher than the highest point of per-person spending during the Second World War. Crucially, along with the record levels of spending, the federal government is also running large deficits and increasing debt.

“Because of the federal government’s lack of fiscal prudence recently, Ottawa’s finances were much worse than they should have been going into this recession,” Clemens said. “The additional spending the government has announced in response to the recession and COVID will exacerbate that problem and means that Canadian taxpayers will be on the hook for today’s spending for decades to come.”

ALL TOGETHER BEER

In an urgent call for action to help support the hospitality industry, Fenelon Falls Brewing Co. is proud to join the All Together Beer project with more than 800 participating breweries from 40 countries around the globe to raise money for the hospitality industry impacted by COVID-19 closures. At this time, with the vast majority of restaurants and taprooms closed with no clear path to reopening, the hospitality sector has been devastated by the impacts of COVID-19— around the globe and here at home. Investing NOW in the survival of hospitality and tourism in The Kawarthas will pay off when we begin our collective recovery. “We’re all in this together. We can choose to believe we’re powerless or face this moment with optimism to help change the future. We see this as brewing for the community and using beer as a force for good.” says Mathew Renda, General Manager of Fenelon Falls Brewing. The All Together project, launched by Other Half Brewing from Brooklyn, NY, is an invitation for brewers around the world to use an open-source recipe to create their own version with proceeds going to support local hospitality professionals. Fenelon Falls Brewing Co.’s take of this worldwide collab is a West Coast IPA, with big flavours of citrus and tropical fruit balanced by a refreshing and satisfying finish. Through a partnership with the City of Kawartha Lakes Economic Development Division, net proceeds of the All Together beer will be used to develop a tourism program in collaboration with the municipality to support the hospitality sector in Kawartha Lakes recover from the impacts of COVID-19. “We’re extremely proud to be a part of the All Together initiative with the Fenelon Falls Brewing Co. The Kawartha Lakes economy relies heavily on tourism and hospitality, and now more than ever we need to come together to support and showcase the industry,” said Laurie McCarthy, Tourism Development Officer. All Together IPA will be available through the online Bottleshop with limited release. Fenelon Falls Brewing Co. continues to donate $2 from every case from our online Bottle Shop to support urgent COVID-related equipment and technology needs as the Ross Memorial Hospital’s team responds to the pandemic. The Fenelon Falls Brewing Co. offers hand-crafted premium beer made in small batches. Sourced from natural ingredients by quality-minded people, their brewing philosophy is to keep ingredients simple and our processes to a minimum to make beer that allows the flavours and aromas to shine through. KEEP YOUR COOL

We’ve had the first wave of hot, humid weather this season, and in these challenging times, the local health unit has some tips to help you stay cool. Heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can be very dangerous, especially for infants, older adults, and people with chronic diseases. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, headache, fainting, paleness, weakness, tiredness, dizziness, and nausea. “If people experience any heat-related illness or symptoms, they should seek medical attention,” says Melissa Johnstone, Emergency Management Coordinator with the Health Unit. “As we head into the warmer weather months with more heat events, it’s important not to overdo things and instead drink plenty of water and seek out cool places.” The Health Unit will issue public warnings in the leadup to extremely warm conditions in its region. A heat warning will be issued when day-time temperatures are forecast to be 31°C or higher, with a minimum day-time low of 20°C or higher, for two consecutive days. A heat warning is also issued if the humidex will be 40°C or higher for two consecutive days. The Health Unit will issue an extended heat warning when the same conditions apply, but the heat event is expected to last for three or more days in a row. Notifications will be posted on the Health Unit’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HKPRDHU), Twitter page (www.twitter.com/HKPRDHU), and website (www.hkpr.on.ca) During any heat wave, the Health Unit advises people to: • Avoid going out in the sun or heat when possible. • Stay cool, and if possible, stay in an air conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, seek a cool public location such as a municipal cooling center to cool down while following physical distancing rules during this time of COVID-19. If you plan to go outside during a very hot day, do so early in the morning or evening when it is cooler. Avoid outdoor sports and physical activity. Wear loose-fitting, light clothing and a wide brimmed hat. Drink lots of water, even if you don’t feel very thirsty. Avoid alcohol, coffee/tea and pop. SCHOOL’S OUT

A letter from Larry Hope, Director of Education, TLDSB

I want to share my heartfelt gratitude and understanding for all you have experienced and are dealing with right now. This has been an unusual school year on many fronts. You have received many messages from us ranging from labour unrest to school closures. We have all had to be as resilient as we can as we’ve made our way through these troubling times and I appreciate your patience, support, and understanding as we navigate our way together. The latest announcement about school closures until September by the Ministry of Education has raised increasing concern by families around access to schools to collect student belongings. Until now, this

has not been possible based on guidance to us from local public health authorities. However, we have now been given the go-ahead to plan for families to come to schools to collect belongings. We are in the process of working out a strategy that will allow for the safety of all those involved and hope to be able to share this with you at some point next week. We know this is important to you, and we want you to be able to retrieve personal belongings as soon as possible. Principals of our schools will be sharing graduation information with those of you who have a graduating student in your household. We have carefully considered many options and each school has consulted with their school community to determine a

plan that will fit with current public health measures. We also know how important it is for our students to be honoured as they celebrate this important milestone. While it won’t be the same as usual, I’m confident our schools and families will do everything they can to make this special occasion memorable for our graduates. I know that each family is feeling differently about TLDSB Learning@Home. Our teachers and support staff are providing learning opportunities in a variety of ways and all teaching staff have office hours available to parents and to students if there are any questions or concerns. I encourage you to take advantage of this. We have heard that some students want more work and look forward to summer school opportunities, which we will be announcing shortly. And there are other families who are finding learning at home a challenge and have decided to relax some of the expectations for their child. The choice you make as a family is the right choice for you and the well-being of your family should come before anything else right now. If your child is falling behind or struggling with the workload or balance, please reach out to their school teacher or principal. We want to be sure we are providing the best possible experience in this most unusual of times, and we need to know how it’s going for everyone. I wish to extend the deepest of gratitude for all you’re doing to support the students of Trillium Lakelands District School Board.

Hospital Services

The Province has issued a framework for planning to resume previously postponed surgeries and procedures. RMH is in the planning phase and is assessing ability to gradually and thoughtfully resume some surgeries and services, while maintaining appropriate supplies of Personal Protective Equipment and capacity. Hospitals will need to work together regionally before resuming services, and must be prepared to ramp back down should the number of patients who require acute care due to COVID-19 increase.

Cloth masks needed

As RMH prepares to gradually resume some services, we’ll need more cloth masks to provide to patients and essential visitors. If you are available to sew and donate cloth masks, please follow our guidelines at https://foundation.rmh.org/foundationnews-releases/donating-homemade-masks. Thank you to all those who have donated cloth masks so far.

STAYING SAFE AS PROVINCE REOPENS

As the Ontario government carefully and gradually reopens the province, those taking public transit, returning to work or going out shopping are being urged to continue to adhere to public health advice as the best line of defence against COVID-19. To assist the public, the Ministry of Health today released specific recommendations on how to choose, wear and care for appropriate face coverings used in

public where physical distancing is not possible, along with additional safety measures for provincial transit agencies. The details were released recently by Premier Doug Ford, Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “Now that we are in Stage 1 of our Framework for Reopening the Province, more people will be returning to workplaces, going to stores and parks, and using public transit,” said Premier Ford. “I strongly urge everyone to continue following the public health advice, such as physical distancing and restricting gatherings to five people or less. Although we are making progress, COVID-19 is still a risk that we must guard against. Please stay safe and protect yourself and others.” Since the beginning of the outbreak, Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, has advised people to wash their hands often, stay at home if feeling ill, and practise physical distancing by staying at least two metres apart from anyone outside their household. Now that the province is reopening, the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other health experts are recommending that individuals wear a face covering where physical distancing is not possible, such as on public transit or in a small grocery store or pharmacy. In order to assist people and reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19, the Ministry of Health released the following face covering recommendations:

Kawartha Takeout

Wear your face covering safely and snugly to cover your nose and mouth, without any gaps. Ensure your face covering is made of at least two layers of tightly woven material and can be cleaned multiple times without losing its shape; • Medical masks, such as surgical and N95 masks, should be reserved for use by health care workers, those providing direct care, first responders and individuals who are ill and must leave their home for essential reasons such as seeking medical care, picking up medication or groceries; • Face coverings should not be placed on or used by children under the age of two; anyone who has trouble breathing; and anyone who is unable to remove it without assistance. “If you need a face covering, it is critically important people wear one that is appropriate for the situation,” said Minister Elliott. “Those taking transit or going out who can’t physically distance should wear non-medical grade cloth masks. We need to reserve all of the medical masks to protect our frontline health care workers, first responders and people who are ill.” Workers and employers may also consider using face coverings as an additional public health measure in addition to mandatory occupational health and safety measures. To assist provincial transit agencies in protecting transit staff and riders in this new environment, the Ministry of Health is also recommending the following measures be put in place:

Physical distancing of at least two metres by admitting fewer passengers and using physical markers between seats; • The use of face coverings, particularly when physical distancing is not feasible; • Ensuring the availability of alcohol-based hand rub upon entering and exiting the vehicle; • Implementing engineering controls like plexiglass windows between drivers and passengers; and • Enhanced cleaning, particularly of high-touch surfaces. “Ontario’s public transit systems are critical to supporting the economy and getting people where they need to go as the province begins to reopen,” said Minister Mulroney. “The health and well-being of all transit workers and passengers is a top priority for our government and we will be working with transit agencies to ensure that public transit can continue to operate safely.” All Canadians continue to be legally required to self-isolate for 14 days when returning home from international travel. In the meantime, Ontario and public health experts will carefully monitor the key public health indicators at each stage of reopening and will adjust public health measures if necessary.

UPDATE FROM PINECREST

Submitted by Mary Carr, Administrator, Pinecrest Nursing Home

I am pleased to report that our COVID-19 updates will come to an end this week as we enter the next stage of a “new normal” here at Pinecrest Nursing Home. We are confident that this challenge is behind us and, together with Public Health, we are moving forward into what will hopefully be a bright and healthy summer season. All ongoing infection control and prevention measures will remain firmly in place to ensure the continued health and safety of our residents and staff. This includes screening staff and residents twice daily, continuing to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times while on the premises, and maintaining enhanced cleaning and sanitization measures. A Fenelon Falls community member has organized the Caring & Connecting Pen Pal Initiative. This is a letter sharing group that invites anyone in the community to write letters to Pinecrest residents. Residents can respond if they wish, but the primary goal is to connect residents with the community and boost spirits with cheerful and uplifting letters. Some residents will receive their very first letter this weekend and I know that they will appreciate this connection as social distancing measures remain in place following Public Health’s ongoing isolation directives. If you would like to participate, you can send a letter to activities@pinecrestnh.ca. We ask that letters be received via email, to be passed onto a resident in person. Our staff wanted to send a special thank you to our community for their continued support over the 12

past two months. I believe that our true characters are revealed in times of crisis, and throughout the outbreak we have seen what our community is made of. We’ve been astounded by the words of comfort, acts of solidarity and innumerable gifts shared with all of us at Pinecrest Nursing Home. This support has meant the world to us! From our family to yours - Thank you!

LOCAL STORES BACK IN BUSINESS

From Fenelon Falls Chamber of Commerce

As Ontario enters the first phase of reopening the economy, you will notice some of your favourite local spots and shops are opening their doors for business again. Some stores have special hours, and some may continue to offer their curbside pickup services for contactless shopping. Many stores also continue to offer online shopping for your convenience. Our local retail stores, restaurants, and independent service providers are pillars in our small community, and they all appreciate your continued support and patronage during this period. Shoppers who purchased gift certificates from FanSaves can begin redeeming them in local shops now! Let’s all remember to maintain social distancing and adhere to recommended safety precautions when we are out and about in our town. It’s time to enjoy the warmth and sunshine we are finally getting!

MORE HEALTHCARE SERVICES CAN REOPEN

Dentists, optometrists and massage therapists are part of a list of health-care providers that the Ontario government says can gradually reopen following a months-long shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chiropractors, physiotherapists, psychologists, dieticians and denturists are also included on the list released Wednesday as part of a new order from the province’s chief medical officer of health. “Health regulatory colleges are now in the process of developing guidance to ensure high-quality and safe clinical care that must be met before services can resume,” said Ontario’s Health Minister, Christine Elliott. The provincial guidelines say providers must also comply with public health regulations and physical distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

GALLOPING TO BOLTON

After three years on King Street in Bobcaygeon, award-winning boutique, Kicking Cowgirl Designs (KCD) is moving to triple their retail space to 73A Bolton Street. “This year will be a game changer for us, as we have expanded our line of Kicking Cowboy Designs, signed a Western Wear Distributor to sell the KCD Brand in Australia/ New Zealand, and a licensing deal in place to sell retailers in both Canada and the USA,” says Kimberly Dawn, owner of the business. KCD recently won “Best Western Boutique in North America” beating out Western Stores in California, Texas, and Arizona. Started six years ago, Kimberly started out selling at Rodeos, Fairs and Plowing Matches with a mandate to raise money for kids’ feeding and sports programs in Africa, along with sending kids to camp in Ontario. Every February, Kimberly has taken 25 to 29 hockey bags of supplies and spends three weeks working with kids and families in the slums of Africa. Today, 20 percent of its profits are still donated back to kids’ organizations. Having being delayed because of C-19, The Official Grand Opening will be Saturday, June 6 with ribbon cutting at 10:30am. Country singer Ty Baynton performing, there will be refreshments and more. “Once C-19 is behind us, we will continue setting up our trailers every weekend at the Rawhide, Ram and Black Creek Rodeos which is a huge sales and marketing tool for KCD,” says Kimberly. “But our

PLOWING ON

Submitted by Cathy Lasby

The 103rd edition of the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) has been postponed until October, 2021. The IPM will run from Wednesday, October 13 to Saturday, October 16 and will be held at the Lindsay Fairgrounds and neighbouring Farms in Lindsay. The Leadership of the Ontario Plowmen’s Association (OPA) made this most difficult decision while closely monitoring local, provincial and federal government information and regulations. In spite of these difficult times, the OPA has never wavered from their responsibility to the people that make the IPM successful year after year. The health and safety of our volunteers, sponsors, competitors, visitors and staff will always be our number one priority. Since its beginnings in 1913, this is only the third time that the event has not been able to open. Ironically, the first cancellation was in 1918 when the quickly-spreading flu pandemic struck the City of Ottawa. According to history, the Mayor of Ottawa and the Federal Minister of Agriculture denied the use of the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa just the day before the IPM was to open. During the Second World

War, the IPM did not open as it was important for all Canadians to dedicate their time and talents to the war efforts. As our world progresses towards the new reality, we will be ramping up again to bring the 103rd IPM to the Municipality of Kawartha Lakes. Centred at the Lindsay Exhibition Grounds, we also look forward to working with the neighbouring farmers to showcase their resilient and dedicated community. At the same time, we will be moving forward with plans for the 104th IPM. We are proud to announce that the Municipality of North Grenville and the Grenville Plowmen’s Association will be co-hosting with OPA. Please mark your calendar: Tuesday, September 20 to Saturday, September 24, 2022. We are proud to be highlighting the Kemptville College campus and the neighbouring farms at Kemptville, Ontario. We look forward to seeing everyone at the 103rd and 104th International Plowing Match and Rural Expo…and beyond. In the meantime, please stay healthy….please stay safe.

IT’S TICK SEASON, TOO

From Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit

TSW OPENS WITH LIMITED SERVICES

Starting June 1, 2020 the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site will offer limited visitor access and basic services along the entire system, with the exception of Swift Rapids lockstation. Visitors will be able to access the following services and facilities: • lockage, boat launches, access points and mooring areas; • day-use areas, including green spaces, picnic areas, and parking lots; • day-use trails, including some cycling access on designated trails and pathways; • lockstation grounds; and • public toilets where enhanced cleaning protocols will be implemented. Until June 1, these facilities remain closed and visitors are asked to respect these closures in order to allow Parks Canada to do the necessary work to prepare for opening. Visiting the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site will be different than it has been in the past. Visitors are asked to plan ahead by checking the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site website before they travel to find out: what is open; what they can expect, including modified lockage and mooring protocols; how to prepare for their visit. The health and safety of visitors and employees is of utmost importance to the Government of Canada. Parks Canada is following the advice of public health experts and continues to make every effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. Visitors should follow the advice of public health experts, including necessary hygiene practices and physical distancing of two metres from others. Parks Canada is asking Canadians to be cautious and conservative in their use of these places, to observe any regional or Ontario travel restrictions and to respect any closures that are in place. Anyone participating in recreational activities should be extra cautious to avoid injury and/or getting lost to help minimize the demands placed on search and rescue teams and on the health care system. All camping facilities remain closed until at least June 21, 2020, while Parks Canada assesses whether and how these services might resume. Group activities and public events are suspended until further notice. Detailed information on Parks Canada places and the measures the Agency is taking to limit the spread of COVID-19 can be found on the Parks Canada website: pc.gc.ca. Please check regularly for updates. 18

Keeping a safe distance from others during a pandemic also has some merit when it comes to avoiding blacklegged (or deer) ticks that can spread Lyme disease. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit urges people to be extra watchful for blacklegged ticks. This type of tick may carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, an illness that can lead to recurring arthritis, neurological problems, numbness or paralysis if left untreated. “With blacklegged ticks present in much of southern Ontario, including Northumberland County, Haliburton County and the City of Kawartha, it’s important to take precautions wherever and whenever you’re outside,” says Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Health Protection with the HKPR District Health Unit. “Just like mosquitoes, blacklegged ticks are another pest to avoid at this time of year.” Blacklegged ticks will attach themselves to a passing person or animal, and then feed on the host’s blood. The longer a tick feeds, the greater the risk it can spread Lyme disease to a person. To avoid blacklegged ticks and reduce the risk of Lyme disease, the Health Unit suggests you: • Apply bug spray containing DEET on your skin and clothing • Wear closed-toe shoes, long-sleeved shirts and pants • Pull socks over your pant legs if possible • Stay on marked trails when walking in a nature area. • Keep ticks away from your property. Cut grass short and trim bushes/branches to let in sunlight Check yourself for ticks after being outside. Shower as soon as you can to wash off any ticks. Put your clothes in a dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes to kill any ticks that may be attached. If you notice a tick on your body, remove it as soon as possible. If using a tick removal product, follow manufacturer’s directions. If using finely-tipped tweezers, grasp the head of the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull it slowly, straight out. Immediately after, wash the bite area with soap and water, or alcohol-based sanitizer. Seek medical attention if a blacklegged tick has been attached for more than 24 hours or looks like it’s been feeding for some time. You should also see a health care provider if you have symptoms of Lyme disease like a skin rash, fever, headache and muscle/joint pain. If detected early, Lyme can be treated successfully with antibiotics. NOTE: During COVID-19, call your health care provider first to ask how to get care. If you are self-isolating for any reason due to COVID-19, call Telehealth at 1-866797-0000 or the Health Unit at 1-866-888-4577, ext. 5020 for more guidance. The Health Unit is encouraging people to use the free eTick website (www.etick.ca) to identify any ticks they encounter. The result is not meant to provide medical advice, but can help people determine if they wish to see a health care provider.

reaching out, not just to family and friends, but to people with whom you are not so close, but who could use a friendly ‘hello’. It will make them feel better -- and YOU, too!

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) No time spent in nature is ever ‘wasted’, dear Aquarius. And now is the best time to take advantage of Mother Nature’s gifts, even if it’s only for a short walk or brief and quiet contemplation in your own backyard or other secluded spot.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.” J. M. Barrie. So, Leo, never let go of your dreams and goals. You’ll never know of what you are capable without trying!

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Turn inward, Pisces. Take this time to focus on yourself, your values, your hopes and dreams. Build the world you want for yourself and all others. Strive for inner peace!

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) During the coming weeks, Virgo, you must draw back from conflicts and pressures. You will see more clearly and act more decisively, and find more balance in everyday interactions.

Aries (March 21 to April 20) Patience is a virtue at any time, Aries, but it is most certainly required in these troubled times. Try to find ways to claim calmness and composure in your daily situations. Meditation, maybe?

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) What can you control, Libra, and what can you not control? This is an important distinction to make as you go about your daily business. Make a list -- and then tell yourself to ‘let go’ of things you cannot change!

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Stay in the present, Taurus. There’s no better time than in a pandemic to move on from the past and DO NOT think too much in the future. Focus on the NOW.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) You, no doubt, have heard this, but it is important to hark back on, Scorpio -- stay away from bad news! Feed your soul with good vibes! And good things will surely come your way!

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) This year’s Full Strawberry Moon is June 5 - typically the last full moon of spring or the first of summer. This name originated with Algonquin tribes who knew it as a signal to gather the ripening fruit of wild strawberries. Perhaps, Gemini, you, too, can ‘gather’ together the ‘fruits’ that are meaningful to you, right now.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Big changes are in store, Sag, but no worries! You can handle whatever is thrown your way!

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Remember, Cancer, that many other people are also experiencing hardship now. Try

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Your health is your number one concern right now, Capricorn. Don’t let fear of COVID-19 keep you from seeking help for other health concerns.
