OVER THE BACK FENCE

The first long weekend of our summer is here! Seasonal residents will come back, our businesses will be busy and, hopefully, the sun will shine! For some of us, too, it means making sure we get to the grocery store before Saturday! There’s a running joke at my local Foodland because invariably I end up there at some point every long weekend, waiting in line with that one item I forgot to get on my earlier trip. I say it’s just to keep my favourite cashier on her toes, but hey ... gets me out of the house! Bundled into our long weekend, I’m sure, will be some glad-handing by our local provincial candidates as the June 2 election looms. Everyone has their opinions about politics, and we just have to respect that. Don’t forget to make sure you’re registered to vote! It’s also the weekend when most of us feel comfortable adding some plants to our gardens and finally removing last fall’s leaves from the beds. I’m not

a big gardener, but I do like the pretty flowers when they bloom. I used to have a vegetable garden, but gave that up when I realized I was not feeding myself, but the squirrels, chipmunks, skunks and other nocturnal critters were enjoying the fruits (literally) of my labours. Now, instead, I head out on Saturday morning to the farmers’ market for my fresh produce. The Trent-Severn Waterway reopens this weekend, too. It will be nice to see some action in the locks and welcome boaters back to the ‘hood. My brother and sister-in-law bring their boat down through the locks from Fenelon Falls to Buckhorn and I get to spend some time with them every summer on the boat. With Buckhorn being the busiest lock in the system, finding a spot on the wall to moor overnight can be a bit of a challenge, but timing is everything. There’s plenty to look forward to and get out and experience in our beautiful area as we kick off the season of sun. Enjoy whatever you do and with whomever you do it. Stay safe, wear your mask (if you need to) and please, please be kind! editor@thepromoter.ca

City Hall CKL FIRE SERVICE MOVING FORWARD

At the Committee of the Whole meeting on May 3, Chief Jones provided Council a review of the financial requirements to meet the Fire Service’s needs over the next 10 years. The requirements have been documented in the Master Fire Plan which was created with administration and a consultant and further informed by a recent third party Modernization Review. At the May 17 Regular Council meeting, the Master Fire Plan was adopted by Council. The Chief outlined a strategy to protect the health and well being of the City’s firefighters. This includes a number of action items to improve physical health such as air filters systems in all stations, decontamination units on scene and in stations. The mental health of firefighters is being supported by key initiatives such as a Peer Support Program, post-incident debriefs and ‘Working Mind for First Responders’ program facilitated through and developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. The Chief confirmed to Council on May 3 that the spring recruitment is going well and 30 new volunteers are in the process of being trained and ready to deploy to stations. Another 30 will be recruited in the remainder of the year. In addition, financial plans were developed to support the infrastructure: • A new headquarters to be designed in 2027 and completed in 2029 or as the tax base and growth permits, at a projected total cost of $10 million. • The Master Fire Plan includes a capital maintenance plan for all other stations to ensure they continue to meet the needs of the community, at an estimated cost of $5.5 million over the next decade.

OMEMEE WASTEWATER PRESENTATION

The City of Kawartha Lakes is undertaking a planning process for the Wastewater Treatment System for the community of Omemee. The system was upgraded in 2013. The intent was to increase capacity by replacing the spray irrigation system by a Large Subsurface Disposal System (LSSD). Kawartha Lakes has identified that the LSSD system is not operating at its expected capacity and measures may be required to ensure adequate capacity exists for future demands and growth in the community. The recommended

option includes continued operation of the LSSD in conjunction with the previous spray irrigation system. The project is being carried out with the requirements for an addendum to the Schedule ‘C’ project under the terms of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) process, which is approved under the Environmental Assessment Act. As part of the Class EA process for reviewing the upgrade of the sewage treatment system, public comment will be requested. All members of the public are invited to attend the second Public Information Centre (PIC) for the project on May 25 from 6pm to 7pm. The meeting will be held virtually on Zoom. To attend the meeting, please visit the City’s website for a link. You do not need to pre-register. You can access the meeting from a smart device or computer with a supported web browser.

No fireworks in TRENT LAKES

This Victoria Day long weekend the Municipality of Trent Lakes wants to remind residents and visitors that the setting off of fireworks is not permitted at anytime over the weekend. This is in accordance with By-law B2019-103 regardless of whether they are being sold at local stores or not. There are prescribed periods in a calendar year that the setting off of fireworks is permitted but NOT the Victoria Day long holiday weekend. Please check the by-law for the permitted times of the year. Contact the municipal office in advance of the long weekend with any concerns or questions you may have by calling 705-738-3800, or 1-800-374-4009 or email info@trentlakes.ca. Fireworks are never permitted at any of the municipality’s public beaches. If you own a cottage/home that you are renting, make sure your tenants know in advance that there are no fireworks allowed this long weekend. Do not engage in fireworks outside of the prescribed periods of By-law B2019-103. By only permitting fireworks during prescribed periods, it permits our community to prepare for any individual requirements or special needs. Fireworks can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) episodes and emotional flashbacks for our military service veterans, people who experienced war zones, first responder and first responder retirees, and also children/adults with autism or other sensory stimulation disorders. Fireworks also frighten pets that might resort to unpredictable “flight” escapes, risking becoming lost or hurt. If you decide to opt for s’mores around a bonfire in place of the fireworks – be sure to obtain a Burn Permit.

FFSC CLUB GRAND RAFFLE COMING UP

The Fenelon Falls Senior Citizens’ Club is most grateful for the local community support in response to the ‘Coming Together for All’ fundraising program

currently underway. While celebrating their 50th Anniversary, the FFSC club is hopeful to raise funds in support of the Club, with three 50/50 Draws now complete, a 50th Anniversary Grand Raffle draw on June 22 and a Community Sponsor Appeal which will continue. The Grand Raffle is building momentum to ensure the 4,500 tickets get into the hands of lucky supporters across Kawartha Lakes. Raffle tickets are available through the Club, its Board, local retail supporters and volunteer members. Your raffle ticket could win you $3,000 cash; $1,500 in Sobeys gift certificates; more than $600 in theatre and dinner

vouchers; $600 for a planted tree; and a KATVA annual family pass. The Grand Raffle draw will take place on June 22 at the upcoming 50th Anniversary Celebration. Please contact the Club at 705-8877007 or check in on Facebook at facebook.com/ FenelonFallsSeniorCitizensClub. The final 50/50 Draw was held on May 10. Santosh Patel of Rockwood Forest Nurseries, a new corporate sponsor, was on hand to draw the winning ballot. Shannon Gillies was the lucky winner of $695. Fundraising in support of 58 Murray Street continues. The community partner appeal has attracted significant response from both individuals and corporate sponsors. It’s a good start, however there is more to be done. Over the last 50 years, the club executive and its membership have sustained and managed their club facilities, offering a venue adaptable to various events and activities for both members and the local community. Prior to the pandemic, the centre at 58 Murray Street was sustained with a steady schedule of hall rentals, weekly activities and events for the young at heart, and membership fees. Inquiries on how to assist are welcomed and encouraged. Please call 705-887-7007, visit www. fenelonseniors.com or check them out on Facebook for further information on the venue and the club membership and activities.

QUEEN’S JUBILEE CELEBRATION

JUMPING IN HELPS COMMUNITY HEALTH

The third annual Jump in the Lake Challenge on May 7 was an overwhelming success and raised more than $45,000 the Summit Wellness Centre in Coboconk. Unlike other organized Polar Bear Dips, participants jumped into the frigid early May waters from their own docks or local piers. Over 300 donors helped 35 participants raise more than $45,000 so far this year and there is still time to donate. “As a community, we cannot express enough our gratitude for all who participated, donated, and cheered us all on for this year’s Jump In The Lake Challenge for the Summit Wellness Centre!” said Jennifer Wilson, General Manager of the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Summit Wellness Centre project has always been about communities coming together to solve some complex issues facing us all, and this community effort led by Dean Michel and Jennifer Bacon is a wonderful symbol of that,” added Wilson. “We have an exciting year ahead of us,” said Wilson. “Keep an eye on Legion Park hill in Coboconk this summer as we start to see that site change in preparation for the new Summit Wellness Centre!” In three years, the annual Jump in the Lake Challenge has raised over $125,000. The new Summit Wellness Centre will provide a hub for community health in the northern portion of Kawartha Lakes and will include doctors, after-hours care, physiotherapy, dental, a community meeting space and other complementary services that will benefit both full-time and seasonal residents.

VOLUNTEER EXCELLENCE CELEBRATED AT KLFS

Submitted by Kate Dorotheou

Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) recently celebrated volunteer excellence by presenting the Barbara Truax Volunteer Award. Barbara Truax joined the Kawartha Lakes Food Source Board of Directors on July 10, 2002, at the very beginning of our organization and remained an active committee member until October 2017. Though having taken a less active volunteering role in the past years, Barb still continues to support at KLFS events, and shares her experience and expertise with staff and volunteers. To honour the contributions, dedication and positive energy of our longest serving volunteer, in 2018 we established an award in her name. The 2021 Award was presented to Patty Jones. Patty joined Kawartha Lakes Food Source in 2018 and has proceeded to become integral to our operations. She gardens in our Open Garden beds, she picks up donations from our community partners who house our blue barrels, and she has travelled across the City of Kawartha Lakes to deliver the ingredients for our Family Cooking Project! All of these roles, and she still wants more, in her effort to help as many people as she

feed our hungry. If you’re interested in keeping up with Kawartha Lakes Food Source and our mission to help those in the community who are food insecure, call 705324-0707, follow us @KawarthaLakesFoodSource on Facebook and Instagram or visit our website at www. kawarthalakesfoodsource.com.

Brandon Robinson, CEO of Horizon Aircraft. “Advanced manufacturing processes and technologies such as these are proving to be an efficient and highly effective way to prototype innovative new aerospace parts. This is pivotal to the success of our eVTOL system.” Fleming College and Ontario Tech University were jointly awarded $750,000 over three years from NSERC’s Innovation Link program, under the TriAgency College and Community Innovation Program. “The complementary advanced manufacturing expertise of Fleming College’s Centre for Advancement in Mechatronics and Industrial Internet of Things and Ontario Tech University’s Machining Research Laboratory brings many advantages and benefits to innovative companies like Horizon Aircraft,” says Dr. Brett Goodwin, Fleming College Vice-President of Applied Research and Innovation. “Working shoulderto-shoulder with the aerospace engineers at Horizon, the research teams will transform how a novel aircraft will be designed, tested, and manufactured in Canada and beyond.” This is the second collaborative research project undertaken by the two institutions and Horizon Aircraft.

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL ELECTION 2022 PROVINCIAL CANDIDATES HALIBURTON-KAWARTHA LAKES-BROCK

(Editor’s Note: We invited each of the candidates to provide editorial about their party platform. Two candidates responded, information about the others was pulled from party websites.) GRANT DEWAR – NONE OF THE ABOVE PARTY Grant Dewar is running in the riding for the None Of The Above Party, also known as NOTA. Dewar is described by the party as a retired farmer. NOTA’s website says that “voters need tools to better control how we nominate local candidates, formulate major party policies and elect people to represent us who will have to keep their promises or be held accountable, long before the next election.” The None of the Above Direct Democracy Party of Ontario and Canada campaign for the 3Rs of Direct Democracy – Referendum, Recall and Real electoral and legislative Reforms that give voters control of politicians and parties. Candidates are accountable to their constituents and there are no central party policies or controls of elected MPPs beyond the binding Direct Democracy principles. BARBARA DOYLE – NDP (Provided by the candidate) Barbara lives in her childhood hometown of Lindsay, manages the operations of the Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives and believes government should benefit all Ontarians. Co-founding the Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition, Barbara knows how important strong health care is for everyone as she fights against privatization and harmful cuts to local services people depend on. Barbara is determined to fight for local issues such as repealing the Ross Memorial Hospital bill PR65 to return hospital’s protections against loss of acute care services and amalgamation, and to bring new industries and good jobs to the area. As a community volunteer and advocate, Barbara has seen how families in her community have been unable to meet their basic needs. Rental units are scarce and as prices skyrocket, she’s watched as the dream of home ownership has slipped away from many Ontarians. Housing, education, healthcare, support for seniors and making everyday living more affordable are major and immediate priorities of the Ontario NDP. Says Doyle, “I love my community and I am proud of who we are and what we have built here. I sincerely believe that all levels of government must work together to get the job done, just like I believe that no matter how you vote, we are all each other’s neighbours, coworkers, and families in need of the same basic things to improve.” Full platform is available at ontariondp.ca/ platform.

DR. KERSTIN KELLY – Ontario Party (Provided by the candidate) I, Dr. Kerstin Kelly, have been a local veterinarian and small business owner in the Kawartha Lakes. I have witnessed the destruction of small businesses, deterioration of morale, mental and physical health, rocketing divorce, homelessness, divorce rates, opiod and drug addiction, and suicide in our riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, and now rising inflation, and loss of human rights and freedoms that are devastating our area. Learned helplessness occurs when an individual continuously faces a negative, uncontrollable situation and stops trying to change their circumstances, even when they have the ability to do so. The perception that one cannot control the situation essentially elicits a passive response to the harm that is occurring. Government overreach, red tape and over-regulation combined with programs whereby “helping makes people more helpless” is the cause of the majority of issues we are facing. With the Ontario Party, we aim to cut the red tape, reduce taxes and energy costs, get corrupt government out of the way, allowing good hard-working Ontarians to use innovation, enterpreneurship, and selfresponsibility to bring back businesses, manufacturing, jobs and hope in a loving, compassionate and decent society. We need people to take back their government; take control of their voice in parliament and chose a candidate who is not whipped, who has a recall policy to back up their accountability, and bring decency and honesty back into government. Only the Ontario Party offers that. Vote for a change for the better and allow me to be your representative and public servant! Take back your power! DONALD McBEY – LIBERAL PARTY OF ONTARIO Donald McBey, has built his career on medical, legal and community advocacy, and was most recently the Vice-Chair of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal. McBey wants to use his skills and experience to empower the people of Haliburton–Kawartha Lakes– Brock and deliver real results that will make life more affordable, while restoring trust in government and predictability in their daily lives. “After the last few disorienting years, our communities need a strong representative to empower our transition toward a post-pandemic recovery,” says McBey. “I am committed to listening to your choices and challenges and advocating strongly on your behalf for better health care, schools, housing, and restored business and workplace predictability.” He continues, “I pledge to use my skills and experience to empower the people of HaliburtonKawartha Lakes-Brock to meet the personal and financial challenges of a changing world and to help restore trust in government and predictability in their daily lives.” May 20, 2022 - The Kawartha Promoter

Most notably, she was a part of the Ontario government’s $4 billion investment so 1.4 million people will be able to access high-speed internet. May 20, 2022 - The Kawartha Promoter

Horoscopes Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) There will be lots of events and going-ons to look forward to and keep you busy during this phase, Aquarius. Enjoy them and take the time to nurture yourself – or take along someone else and make them happy, too. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Friendship is such an important part of our lives, Pisces. Treasure the friends you have now, remember fondly the ones from the past, and look forward to new ones being made. Aries (March 21 to April 20) Love is difficult, Aries. It’s certainly not a perfect rose garden. That’s why it takes a lot of trial and error. Can you work it out? Keep trying. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Are you “disconnecting from work”, Taurus? This is the idea that people should only spend time on their job commitments during working hours – not during home and family time. It will be better for your health in many ways! Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Learn to search out and recognize the blessings in life, Gemini, for there are many to be found. Be thankful for small things can bring much joy and happiness. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Do you need to let go, Cancer? To let go of people who may be causing you more hurt than pleasure? To let go of the need to hang on to friendship or ties just for the sake of ‘hanging on’? Only you know the answer!

Horoscopes May 20 to June 3

By Melodie McCullough

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Your generosity and kindness are greatly appreciated, Leo, although you may not realize this. Don’t worry - you don’t need the expressions of others to keep you going. Your innate confidence is enough! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Check your spidey sense, Virgo, in the coming days and make sure it is in full working order. Keep your ‘safe space’ safe! Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”: Albert Einstein. There are so many things to be curious about, dear Libra, and so many things that need answers. By questioning the status quo, and using your voice, you can make a difference. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) There are many ways to heal, Scorpio, but there is only one way that will be special to you and help you recover from whatever ails you. It will be your OWN way – and you will know best. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) We sense there are important issues that need to be addressed by you, Sagittarius. Don’t let them fester and boil over. Face them head on and then move on to a better place. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) “For age is opportunity no less than youth itself, though in another dress, and as the evening twilight fades away the sky is filled with stars, invisible by day.”: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. If you are of a certain age, dear Capricorn, – or any age, really – take this to heart because there is so much goodness here. At any time in life, new opportunities beckon.
