The following exchange was submitted and does not reflect the opinions of The Kawartha Promoter. To Mayor Letham by email Good afternoon, Your Worship, I attach a memo from Mississauga member Derek Sloan who says it perfectly ....why are you making masks mandatory at this stage of the game? Unless we are all supplied with N95 masks defence against the tiny virus particles is useless. Like putting up a chain link fence to keep mosquitoes out. I could have understood this maybe in March before we knew better but now that there have been very low numbers of COVID cases this last month and we are moving into phase 3 on Friday I find it ridiculous. Cloth masks are no protection. Only N95 masks have any real protection so I wonder if you are supplying them to us? Wearing masks at the best of times has dangers, wearing useless masks is cruel and unusual punishment that we don’t need or deserve. We have been compliant, as seniors we have been quarantined, sanitized everything a thousand times, taken all precautions. Again it seems senseless at this stage of the game. Thank you for your attention. Sincerely Miriam Newton and my husband Eldon Adams, Norland

Mayor Letham’s Response by email Hi folks, Thanks for the email, I appreciate hearing your thoughts. I even agree with some of them. The mandatory mask order was issued by the local health

unit which they have the authority to do. We as a municipality are obligated under the state of emergency to help with communication and enforce the order as we are with social distancing and gathering limits. It is an inconvenience, I agree, but if it helps move us forward and prevent a second wave then perhaps it it worth the sacrifice right now. Who really knows. Thanks again for sharing your concerns. Take care. Andy Letham, Mayor, City of Kawartha Lakes

Ms. Newton’s Response by email Good morning, Your Worship. Thanks for getting back to me so promptly. While I appreciate your position there seems to be a disconnect with reasoning here. It is not the inconvenience, that would be valid if wearing masks made sense. Like I said before there is no science behind it and everyone was saying it did not help at first because of this. What masks do is separate us from each other and hide our smiles. That’s all. I will be shopping in Peterborough or Orillia where we still have a choice. (Editor’s Note: As of August 1, wearing a mask in a public indoor space is now mandatory.)

CKL TO GET TOURISM DOLLARS

On July 9, Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries announced more than $1.4 million in tourism recovery supports across the Kawartha Lakes region. “As our government moves forward with reopening the province, we are proud to invest over $1.4 million to support initiatives in the Kawartha Lakes region that promote our communities and put our tourism industry on a path to recovery,” said Minister MacLeod. A $1.25 million investment in to Kawartha’s regional tourism organization will deliver locally driven marketing programs designed to encourage all Ontarians to explore their communities, through a joint funding partnership between Destination Ontario and Destination Canada. The remaining $150,000 will provide support to local festivals through the 2020 Celebrate Ontario program. “As one of the most beautiful parts of Ontario, Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes Brock is usually a magnet for visitors from other parts of our province and beyond,” said Laurie Scott, MPP Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “Tourism is a key economic driver in Kawartha Lakes that brings economic, social and cultural benefits to our region. This tourism investment will go a long way in assisting the recovery of our tourism industry while helping us continue to develop a thriving and diversified visitor economy,” said Laurie McCarthy, Tourism Development Officer for Kawartha Lakes.

CANADA UNITED

Bobcaygeon & Area Chamber of Commerce has joined Canada United, a national movement to support local businesses in communities across the country. As part of the movement, RBC has brought together more than 50 of Canada’s leading brands, Business Associations and the national Chamber network to rally Canadians to “show local some love” by buying, dining and shopping local. “The Bobcaygeon Chamber is pleased to support the Canada United movement and help bolster businesses in and around our community. Small businesses are the backbones of our local economies and key to thriving communities,” says Chamber President, Donna Wood. “The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for businesses in the Kawartha Lakes and across the province. We need to continue to support SMEs who create jobs, drive innovation, and generate wealth for communities across Ontario – they will play an integral role in helping the province bounce back.” Canadians are invited to join the Canada United movement by buying and dining local, including celebrating and supporting local businesses during the Canada United Weekend from August 28 to 30, 2020. Canadians are also encouraged to watch special videos online at GoCanadaUnited.ca, like posts from @GoCanadaUnited on social media and use #CanadaUnited to demonstrate their support. For each of these actions until August 31, 2020, RBC will contribute 5 cents up to a maximum contribution amount of $2 million to the new Canada United Small Business Relief Fund, while working with government and corporate partners to source additional contributions to the fund during the course of the campaign. The Fund will provide small businesses with grants of up to $5,000 to cover expenses related to personal protective equipment (PPE) renovations to accommodate re-opening guidelines and developing or improving e-commerce capabilities. Small Canadian businesses across the country will be able to apply for up to $5,000 in grant funding. The program intends to support small Canadian businesses of all kinds from across the country. The Canada United Small Business Relief Fund will be administered by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the national Chamber network. Small business owners who are interested in the program can visit GoCanadaUnited.ca to learn more about grant application details, including eligibility criteria, and to apply. Neil McLaughlin, Group Head, Personal & Commercial Banking, Royal Bank of Canada said, “Canada United was created to kick-start an economic rebound by rallying consumers to give local businesses the support they need to re-open during these uncertain times. By bringing together government, business associations and corporate Canada, we are looking to start a movement to get Canadians to buy local and support businesses across the country.”

OUTDOORS AND OUT OF S’MORES!

Submitted by Hayley Phoenix

The Coboconk, Norland and Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to begin fundraising for the Wellness Centre! Our first fundraising initiative is called Camping for a Cause: Go Wild for the Wellness Centre. The fundraising campaign brings out campers in the community to raise awareness for the new Wellness Centre and raise funds to help make the project a reality. For 12 hours, both experienced and not-soexperienced campers will take on the great outdoors! With every donation checkpoint the participant meets, a luxury item on their camping list is added or removed, leaving the fate of their camping trip entirely in the hands of the donors. Each donation puts us one step closer to building the Wellness Centre. This ongoing project will solve the issue of the lack of healthcare services in the northern areas of the Kawartha Lakes since the closure of the Coboconk Medical Centre. The new Wellness Centre will provide health and well-being support, construction and year-round jobs, and a long-term positive impact on local businesses. The concept is to renovate and expand the Coboconk Train Station building in Legion Park, preserving that significant piece of Coboconk history. The expansion will include space for more doctors, after-hours care hours, and other complementary practitioners and services that will benefit our community. All these services are what you – the community – have told us you need. Let’s work together to get it built! Participant of the campout, Barb Lee Young, says, “The important thing to keep in mind is that this Wellness Centre will benefit the whole community which is seriously in need of a place for doctors, physiotherapists, dentists, etc. This will provide us all with the medical care we have all been needing for so long without having to drive long distances to get it.”

August 8th marks the big night for Barb and the other brave campers who will set out to Go Wild for the Wellness Centre. Will they camp in cold or comfort? It’s up to YOU! For donation information to make or break a happy camper’s packing list, and information to become a camper, visit www.coboconknorland.ca. Health & Wellness MASKING UP

If you’re heading indoors in a public place in Peterborough County, as of August 1 you’ll be required to wear a face covering. After collaborating with local municipal leaders, Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health for Peterborough Public Health is invoking a directive under the Province’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act that requires individuals to wear a face covering in certain indoor public spaces. Under the directive, the person responsible for a business or organization that is open shall operate it in compliance with the advice, recommendations and instructions of public health officials, including any advice, recommendations or instructions on physical distancing, cleaning or disinfecting. The directive applies to all owners and operators of commercial establishments, public transit services, and commercial transportation services within the Peterborough Public Health catchment area. “Although not conclusive, there is increasing scientific evidence that wearing a face covering can help reduce COVID-19 transmission,” said Dr. Salvaterra. “This measure will help both residents and visitors to our area and adds to a clear and consistent regionalized approach to mandatory face coverings across the Central Ontario region, especially as we move into Stage 3 of our restart.” The directive invoked by Dr. Salvaterra will remain in place until provincial emergency orders expire, which were recently extended until July 29, 2020. However, on July 7, 2020, the Government of

Ontario introduced the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, 2020 that would, if passed, ensure important measures remain in place to address the threat of COVID-19 once the provincial Declaration of Emergency has ended. The extension of these emergency orders under the EMCPA would allow orders that remain essential to be continued under the proposed legislation, if passed. The government continues to review emergency orders currently in place to determine when and if they can be safely eased or lifted. Dr. Salvaterra emphasized as the Peterborough area enters Stage 3 of the provincial reopening plan, following public health guidance is key to staving off a resurgence of COVID-19. “While local businesses and organizations are doing their part to implement measures within their settings to prevent the spread of coronavirus, as individuals we also need to continue our efforts such as physical distancing, washing our hands often, staying home when sick, and now, wearing a face covering when in an enclosed public space,” said Dr. Salvaterra. “We have heard directly from many local residents and community partners that a clear mandatory mask directive is important to them to keep our community safe,” says Dr. Salvaterra. “Socializing and normalizing mask use in enclosed public places will help protect others, especially our most vulnerable residents.” Dr. Salvaterra noted though it is equally as important not to stigmatize those who are unable to wear face coverings for medical reasons. “Being kind, patient and respectful to others is just as important as any infection control measure as we also must remember to support each other’s mental health during the pandemic.” Further information can be found at www. peterboroughpublichealth.ca.

CHORISTERS’ CORNER

By April Scott

The Choristers are all missing the weekly practices and the camaraderie that goes with them. However, hopefully there is a light at the end of the tunnel and everything will be well. There have been several occasions that need to be brought to mind. Sadly, Ron Needs’ wife, Jean, passed away a few months ago. She had been sick with cancer for quite a while. She now rests in peace. On a happier note, Sue and Bill Fry celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary recently. Congratulations to you both. Mary and Syd Sheffield moved to Coburg at the end of June. Mary was a staunch member of the Choristers, taking on the role of Treasurer for many years and was the instigator of the Annual Christmas Cookie sale. She will be missed when we return. For those of you who remember Kathleen Milner, you will be pleased to hear that she and her husband,

Robert, celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary not too long ago. Congratulations from all of us. There have probably been several birthdays which we have missed…so Happy Birthday to all. Unfortunately for the Choristers, our wonderful pianist, Vivian has retired during this time. She has been a great asset to us, we will miss her immensely and we all wish her well in the future. That being said we are now on the lookout for a great replacement. While we do not know when we will be returning to practices, we urge all pianists to take some time and think about it. Our director, Bob Plummer will be glad to take your call at 705-731-1060. Stay tuned and hopefully we will have news for you next time. Stay safe and wear your mask.

BANNER OF HOPE

The Truth and Reconciliation Community Bobcaygeon (trcbobcaygeon.org) is a group of settlers on a journey to build relationships with Indigenous people. A banner with 10 squares has been created to represent some of the experiences gathered along the way. We continue our series of stories that accompany the images of the squares.

“COTTAGERS AND INDIANS” By Rodney Smith-Merkley

One of the Bobcaygeon Truth and Reconciliation Community’s most ambitious undertakings was in hosting a Drew Hayden Taylor play around manoomin (wild rice). I have a wonderful memory of Cottagers and Indians being performed in Curve Lake. I believe it was the first time the play was performed outside of 12

July 24, 2020 - The Kawartha Promoter

Toronto…and the first time the dock had been built in a new location. Beads of sweat, using dead cordless drills as screwdrivers, and borrowing scrap lumber from community members to ensure the dock would hold together all under a very tight timeline made for a memorable debut! It was quite the way for me to meet some members of my new congregation, just beginning the process of moving from a ministry in Bobcaygeon to one in Curve Lake. I am glad the church could join with labour unions and the arts community as well as the Curve Lake community to bring this play “home” to the Curve Lake Community Centre. The next few days of sold-out performances at the Lakeview Arts Barn proved just as memorable. Evening shows were followed by conversation with Michii Saagiig knowledge keepers, and matinees for high school students were complemented by workshops on the land at Gamiing Nature Centre, just next door on Pigeon Lake. There, Drew Hayden Taylor captured the imaginations of the students with the power of story. Tasty manoomin was shared around an open fire while learning about how it grows and how it is processed. Chi meegwech to James and Daemin Whetung for their role in this. It felt like we were bringing people together in a good way, making a difference!

NIBI EMOSAAWDAMAJIG By Brenda Wall

I chose this theme to celebrate water and, in particular, to honour Indigenous women who have led the sacred water walks in Ontario and elsewhere. Grandmother Josephine Mandamin began these ceremonial walks in 2003 and walked close to 20,000 kilometres around all five of the Great Lakes to raise

awareness of the need to protect water and encourage humanity to rekindle its sacred relationship with water. Josephine explained that “in ceremony, such as a water walk, only women carry the water, indicating that women are caretakers of water, and carry life within themselves.” For the Anishinaabe, water is associated with Mother Earth and it is the responsibility of the grandmothers to lead other women in protecting the water, according to Josephine. In ceremony, first the women offer tobacco to Nibi (water) and the water spirits. Next, the women spill some water from a copper pail into the lake and add some lake water to the pail. When the water walk is completed, all water in the pail is returned to the lake. Copper is said to clean, heal and amplify prayers for water. Sadly Josephine passed away in February 2019 but her great-niece, Autumn Peltier, has come forward as another leader. Since 2015, this young woman has been petitioning the Canadian government for safe drinking water for Indigenous communities in Canada. In 2018, at the United Nations World Water Day celebrations, 14-year-old Autumn called on all countries to “warrior up” in the fight for clean water for Indigenous peoples. Closer to home, local Indigenous women in the Kawarthas began organizing Nibi Emosaawdamajig in 2010. Elder Shirley Williams originally came from Wikwemikong Reserve on Manitoulin Island, completed a Masters in Environmental Science and became a Professor Emeritus at Trent University. Shirley and others started the Kawartha water walks around Rice Lake in 2010 and have held walks around lakes in the region every year since. This year, the water walk around Pigeon Lake has been postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings. When we discussed our quilt and chose our themes, I had no idea of how difficult the process of making my quilt block would be. I knew I wanted to honour the Indigenous women who have led the water walks and so I set about drawing a rough image of a water droplet and a woman gathering water beside a body of water. I searched and finally found a design by EmmBriArt which seemed to capture the beauty of water. The designer gave me free rein to adapt her design because of our Indigenous support work. It took me a long time to embroider but it also allowed me to reflect and change my thinking as I went along – a very worthwhile process. In honouring the women water walkers, I wanted

to include a red dress but chose instead a red blouse representing and remembering the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. For the long skirt traditionally worn by women taking part in ceremony, I decided to use the colours of the Four Directions teachings (red, black, yellow and white). I wanted to capture water as life, as living, so I included another idea of embroidery threads falling out of my image. As I began working on a copper pail, it turned into something resembling a copper pot or earthenware pot instead. This reminded me of Indigenous women in Latin America or Africa so I left it there as a reminder that the scarcity of fresh, clean water is international. The inclusion of rocks in the foreground brought to mind the Petroglyphs – the Teaching Rocks. The final moment of awareness as I completed my piece is the interconnectedness of all of our squares and themes. Water is Life and is connected to all living things and brings us natural beauty as well as sustaining our lives. As I embroider, we are living under lockdown during COVID-19. This has highlighted the vital importance of clean water to prevent the spread of this devastating pandemic. Living under lockdown also forces me to think about my own privilege. I have worked for unions and social justice and in my work have fought against the privatization of water in Canada and have recognized water as a human right. As well, I have been part of the Boycott Nestlé campaign, supported the struggle for clean water at Grassy Narrows after years of mercury poisoning and have been part of the Council of Canadians campaigns on Water. Their call to immediately provide clean water to over 100 First Nations communities currently affected by Drinking Water Advisories and to give greater control by and for First Nations over water is seen as a basic step towards Reconciliation. However, it was not until I became part of Indigenous support work that I began to understand the crucial role played by Indigenous women in this struggle to protect our water and the spirituality of water as honoured in ceremony. As part of TRC-Bobcaygeon, I have participated with Elder Shirley Williams and others in the Kawartha regional Water Walks (Nibi Emosaawdamajig) in recent years. Curve Lake First Nation Elder Dorothy Taylor has assisted us in educating local Bobcaygeon Public School students about the sacred water walks. Following Dorothy’s teachings, these students organized a special Water Walk around the waterways of Bobcaygeon in the Spring of 2019. Finally, my block is to remind us that the forces of colonization and resultant genocide have worked to diminish the role of Indigenous women as keepers of the water. I hope it reflects a respect for traditional knowledge holders in raising awareness about the importance of water. In the words of Elder Shirley Williams, “Water is a relative, water is alive. People have a responsibility to care for the water. These are some of the teachings that have been forgotten because of oppression and assimilation.” Miigwetch to Shirley and Dorothy and others who walk for the water.

SAVE OUR STAGE

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Globus Theatre was forced to cancel their 17th season of professional summer theatre. With 60 percent of their annual $500,000 budget derived from ticket sales, it has meant a huge financial loss to the company and left this Ontario Summer Theatre, that performs at the Lakeview Arts Barn in Bobcaygeon, facing an uncertain future. In order to sustain the theatre company in these extraordinary times, Globus Theatre has launched a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $200,000. Long-time Globus patrons, and dedicated supporters of the arts, John and Sally Eaton have stepped up to help make this goal a reality. Their foundation, The John C. And Sally Horsfall Eaton Foundation, will match every dollar donated up to a total of $100,000. This level of support has the potential to provide a lifeline to Globus Theatre. With the help of the community, this enormously generous matching funds offers an opportunity to not only weather this storm but come back stronger than ever when it is safe to do so. While this year Globus will be unable to welcome the 10,000 visitors that the theatre typically hosts annually - to a multitude of different shows, from

children’s performances, to comedy nights and of course the critically acclaimed season of summer performances – they want to be proactive, get creative and find ways to engage with their patrons. James Barrett, Globus Co-Founder and Artistic Producer said, “We have a task ahead of us, that’s for sure. But the faith that John and Sally have shown in us is a huge boost to all of our spirits here at the theatre. It makes us confident that, with the community’s help we will be able to achieve our goal. If we can raise $200,000 it will give us a solid foundation upon which to build. It will allow us to keep our staff employed so that they can use their expertise to guide the company through to a safe reopening, it will allow us to pay actors and playwrights to work on the small scale projects that we want to do to keep our patrons engaged; it allows us to keep the theatre school open and work on different projects to engage youth; and it will finance the implementation of safety measures to keep our audiences safe so that we can all enjoy live theatre once again.” This ‘Save our Stage’ campaign and the matching funds will not only sustain the theatre company until they are able to operate at full capacity but will allow them to produce a “Season Within Reason” with live shows for a limited audience starting in August! In the coming weeks, they will announce the shows, but this series of small-scale programming will allow them to engage with patrons and the community at large while providing some work to this theatrical company whose jobs have been put on hold.

Horoscopes

July 24 to August 6 By Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) People say things, Aquarius. They say things to YOU. But sometimes, words can be taken ‘the wrong way’. Don’t always assume you know their full meaning. Ask if things are unclear! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) We know of a woman who left her abusive husband seven times, and returned to him six times. No. 7 was the one that mattered. So, Pisces, whatever your trials are right now, never give up. There is always a way out and a way up - and available support! Aries (March 21 to April 20) Aries, an uplifting message may be coming your way, via email, social media or snail mail. Watch for it and welcome its glad tidings! Taurus (April 21 to May 21) If you could have a round-trip ride in a time machine and travel into the past or future, where would you go, Taurus? Take time to daydream a bit - there are no real consequences, and . . . it’s fun! Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Animals are great companions, Gemini, offering love and asking little. They are good for our health! If you have a pet, take good care of it. If not, perhaps now is the time to get one? Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Remember,Cancer, everyone’s past colours the present. This includes one’s emotions and reactions to current events. Try to understand why you might behave the

way you do under certain circumstances -- and make peace with the past, also. Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Leo, a full moon arrives August 3 -- the Sturgeon Moon. The full moon, with its roundness and resolution symbolizes fullness and fulfillment -- and the idea that something has been achieved. As the moon grew to shine and lead the way, so you have, too, grown, dear Leo. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) As always, Virgo, you are a good caretaker of your financial interests. Continue to do so, as temptations may arise during this phase that could be worrisome. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Friendship might be described as “a sharing of vulnerabilities”. If you can calm a friend and make them feel better when their troubles tumble out, and they can do the same for you -- consider yourself lucky, indeed, Libra. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”: Marcus Aurelius. This is good advice, Scorpio, for these difficult times! Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) It’s time to rest and take some time off, Sag, from your busy schedule. Do some planning for the future -- but it doesn’t have to be grand or too far down the road. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) The stress of everyday life during these hard times is finally catching up with you, Capricorn. Plan some self-care: meditation, exercise and quiet time alone come to mind.
