OVER THE BACK FENCE

Happy 2024 and winter! We finally had some snow this week, although it certainly wasn’t the “snowmaggedon” that was expected. Don’t worry, though, all you snow lovers and sledders out there, the prediction is for a weekend of snow starting today! I’m not a big fan of winter. I guess because I’m older now and the cold just whistles into my bones! That and the snow makes it more difficult to drive anywhere and then there’s the nasty cold winds that threaten my trees. I know ... there’s wind in the summer, too, but at least it’s a warmer wind? When I was a child, growing up on a farm in Markham, we also dreaded winter. No matter which way the wind blew the snow, our 1/4 mile driveway would become impassable. That meant walking to the school bus stop at the top of the road and it wasn’t pleasant. I was talking to a friend the other

day and we were reminiscing of our childhood winters. Remember putting plastic bread bags over your socks inside your boots for insulation? Remember our parents talking about walking miles uphill (in both directions) slogging through hip-deep drifts of snow? Remember when the school buses ran no matter what the weather? Ah, the good old days! I get a little concerned when I hear the weather forecasts and see the alerts from the prognosticators that a storm is imminent. I do the emergency supply check .... batteries in the flashlights, candles at the ready, large containers of water, food that can be consumed without heating and lots of blankets in case the heat goes out. Would I abandon all of this for a few months down south where the air is warmer and the winter living is easier? Nah ... I’m a hardy Canadian girl. We’ve got this! (And it’s only three months until spring!) Stay well! editor@thepromoter.ca

(OTF). The project was recently completed and will give people in the northern areas of Kawartha Lakes access to recreation activities and fun for the communities this winter and for many years to come. “Access to recreational activities, like skating, are vital to promoting physical activity and building strong ties within the community,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “It’s wonderful to see the OTF supporting a fun and safe initiative that will give people a chance to get outside and get active even in the winter months.” The new outdoor rink has been constructed with lots of volunteer time and energy, along with many community partners. It will be maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers and offered to all who would like to join in the fun. The rink is equipped with outdoor lighting to help extend its hours of use. “The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant is significant,” said Sherry Wessell, Chair of the Ward Park Volunteer Management Committee. “This grant has allowed us to offer safe and affordable winter recreation activities for people of all ages in an area without a lot of recreational programming. We are extremely grateful for this investment in our communities.” The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s (OTF) mission is to build healthy and vibrant communities across Ontario. As an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations, last year, OTF invested over $110M into 1,022 community projects and partnerships. VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER EARNS RECOGNITION

At the end of last year, Kawartha Lakes Fire Chief Terry Jones presented Mr. John Bailey a Provincial Fire Services Long Service award recognizing an exceptional 60 years of commitment as a volunteer firefighter with Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service with the Fenelon Falls station. The Provincial Fire Services Long Service Medal is an expression of public appreciation for the dedication and hard work of Ontario firefighters. This long service medal and subsequent service bars are available to those who have achieved a minimum of twentyfive years in suppression, training, public education, inspections, and communications. In response to John Bailey’s achievement, the Kawartha Lakes Volunteer Firefighter’s Association stated, “The members of the association are very proud of what John has achieved.” John Bailey’s legacy as a volunteer firefighter has left an impact on the Fenelon Falls station and the wider Kawartha Lakes community. The award ceremony was attended by colleagues, friends, and family members who joined together to celebrate this momentous occasion and express their gratitude for Mr. Bailey’s enduring commitment to public safety.

LOCAL PARAMEDICS HONOURED

On December 13, 2023, 65 Ontario paramedics received their Governor General Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal bars for providing exemplary emergency medical services for 30, 40 and 50 years. Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvie Jones presented the First, Second or Third Bars to these long-serving, deserving paramedics. The late Governor General of Canada, Romeo LeBlanc, created the Medal in 1994 as part of the Canadian Honours System. This recognition recognizes paramedics who have provided the highest standard of care and conduct. To qualify, at least ten years of service must have been in the field, on duty, involving potential risk. Each Bar to the Exemplary Service Medal represents an additional award of the Medal. Paramedics who have served for at least thirty years receive their First Bar, forty years their Second Bar, and for fifty years, their Third Bar. This year, two Kawartha Lakes’ paramedics were recognized for 30 years of service and received their first Governor General Exemplary Service Medal bar. Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Chief Sara Johnston congratulated paramedics Greg Murphy and Mark Oliver on their outstanding achievement and thanking them for their contributions to the profession, service and community for over three decades. “There aren’t very many paramedics that are able to meet this level of distinction throughout their career. It’s not just a years of service award, it’s really showing and demonstrating that you’ve contributed in a positive way to the profession. So we want to congratulate Mark and Greg but also extend our deepest gratitude to them for over 30 years of public service to the community,” said Chief Johnston.

“Premier Ford’s decision to prioritize altering the alcohol retail system in Ontario could be disastrous for our members,” said John Nock, President UFCW Local 12r24. “Our members go to work every day in local communities across the province. We sell beer responsibly and deliver it efficiently. We keep our communities safe, and we carry out extremely important work processing and transporting recyclable materials across Ontario through the Beer Store’s recycling program,” continued Nock. The previous government, led by Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne, signed onto the Master Framework Agreement with the Beer Store in 2015. The Agreement codifies the rules governing the retail of alcoholic beverages. The 10-year Master Framework Agreement is scheduled to expire December 31, 2025. The Master Framework Agreement is the only contract of the sort that has ever existed between the Beer Store and the Government of Ontario. The province has decided not to renegotiate the contract. “I am more concerned with what comes after the Master Framework Agreement expires,” said Nock. “The Beer Store has operated in the sector from 1927 until 2015 without a Master Framework Agreement. The MFA is not necessary for us to continue. We have been doing this work for a very long time. Our work is intertwined in the infrastructure of Ontario’s communities. With the Ontario Bottle Deposit Program, our members process and transport over 1 billion units of recyclable materials every year from local communities in Ontario. Also, the current system maintains price consistency across Ontario. All these things could change. The price of beer may go up. As popular as it is to be promised a beer, changes to the current system could be extremely chaotic, and could bring many unforeseen consequences. I’m not sure how necessary any of this is,” continued Nock. The Beer Store operates over 420 retail locations and a province wide logistics network consisting of Distribution facilities and transport fleet. The Beer Store employs roughly 7000 people, 6500 of whom are represented by UFCW Local 12r24. The Beer Store is also the site of the Ontario Bottle Deposit Program (ODRP), a bottle deposit system created by the Government of Ontario in 2007 where all empty alcohol containers sold in Ontario’s LCBO’s and Beer Stores can be returned at Beer Store retail locations. The ODRP also expires in 2025.

It’s a vital tool for detecting herniated or bulging disks, arthritic changes, and cancer. More than 500 patient exams are scanned

at the Ross every month. As government funding doesn’t cover the cost of medical equipment and technology, such as the MRI, these state-of-the-art tools are only made possible with the support of donors like the Kinettes. “The Bobcaygeon Kinettes take their mission — to serve the community’s greatest needs — to heart,” said Erin Coons, RMH Foundation CEO. “Over the past 27 years, the Kinettes have made local patient care a priority, with gifts totaling more than $43,000 to support the Hospital’s priority needs. We’re so fortunate to have generous service organizations like the Kinettes ensuring our community’s Hospital provides the best care possible.”

FOREST THERAPY

Join certified Forest Therapy Guide, Kristie Virgoe on a 90-minute mindful exploration in nature at Ken Reid Conservation Area in support of mental health on Wednesday, January 24. There are two sessions scheduled: 10am to 11:30am and 12 noon to 1:30pm. In addition to reducing stress and improving mood, spending time in nature has also been linked to improved cognitive function and creativity. Studies have found that being in nature can improve memory and attention, as well as increase problem-solving skills and creativity. Forest bathing is best done alone, or with a small group. The goal is to fully immerse yourself in the present moment, and to relax and let go of any stress or distractions. It is not exercise, or hiking, or jogging. It is simply being in nature, connecting with it through our senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. This event is free. Donations in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association are greatly accepted and appreciated. Registration is required at www. kawarthaconservation.com.

rare and unique date. This can make your wedding even more memorable and gives you a fun story to tell. • Anniversary Celebration: Celebrating your anniversary every four years can be a fun and quirky twist. It could turn each anniversary into a more significant event, as it feels more special by being less frequent. • Significance in Folklore: In some cultures, Leap Day holds unique folkloric significance. In some Irish and Scottish traditions, February 29 has been known as “Bachelor’s Day” since the fifth century. A day when women traditionally propose marriage to men. • Unconventional: It’s a non-traditional or unconventional wedding date. Choosing this day could symbolize a break from the norm and a desire to forge a unique path in your marital journey. It’s a nod to the spirit of individuality and nonconformity. • Lucky Day: In Chinese culture, getting married on a Leap day can be considered lucky, and it is believed that a wedding on this day will bring a happy and successful marriage. For February 29, 2024, there are four remaining ceremony times available between 9am and 4pm. The ceremony will be performed by a Municipal Clerk in the historic Victoria Room with beautiful views of Lindsay. This room can welcome up to 20 guests. The total fee to get married on February 29 during regular business hours is $400, which includes the ceremony fee ($260 room booking at City Hall for 1 hour and officiant) and a marriage licence fee ($140). For Leap Day ceremonies, complete the application form by February 9, before all spaces fill up. All couples will require a pre-ceremony meeting with both celebrants present with the officiant at least 10 days before the ceremony. For more information, and ceremony options other than Leap Day, check out the Marriage Services page on the City’s website.

VACCINATIONS REQUIRED FOR KIDS

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPR District Health Unit) is sending a final reminder to parents/legal guardians to ensure their child is up to date on their immunizations and to update their child’s vaccination record with the Health Unit to avoid suspension from school this February. “As part of our continued work to prevent the spread of vaccine preventable diseases our teams have been working diligently with local school boards to support parents through the process of updating vaccines and records with the Health Unit,” says Dr. Natalie Bocking, Medical Officer of Health, and CEO for the HKPR District Health Unit. The Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) R.S.O.1990 requires all students in Ontario to be vaccinated, or have a valid exemption, against tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningococcal disease and varicella. The HKPR District Health Unit is required to maintain and review

vaccine records and exemptions for every student attending school within the City of Kawartha Lakes, the County of Haliburton, and Northumberland County. Those with incomplete records are at risk of being suspended from school for up to 20 days. This January, the HKPR District Health Unit will be mailing out 1,374 suspension notices to parents of students in Grades 3 and Grades 9 to 12 who do not meet the ISPA requirements. This means the student’s record with the Health Unit is missing information, either because a parent and/or guardian has not yet submitted the immunization information or a valid exemption to the Health Unit, or the student has not yet received the immunizations. If the Health Unit does not receive the required information for a student’s immunization file, they will be suspended from school starting February 5, 2024, for up to 20 days or until public health records are updated to meet provincial requirements. The Health Unit is holding special immunization clinics to help those not currently vaccinated. Horoscopes

Aquarius (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) By accepting who you are right now, dear Aquarius, you will have the space to dive into the unknown. It’s not about rebuilding your life, but it’s an evolution of your spirit.

January 12 to 25

Leo (July 23 to Aug. 22) It’s time to declutter, Leo. Streamline your life physically and emotionally with purpose and intention.

Pisces (Feb. 19 to March 20) You may notice your hopes and dreams taking on new shapes right now, Pisces. It’s only natural as you look toward new beginnings and an inspiring future.

Virgo (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Engage in creative outlets as an important part of your healing journey, Virgo. Remember that the whole point is to get creative, not about necessarily being good at it. Choose fun and passion to nurture your well-being.

Aries (March 21 to April 19) It’s a transformative time in this new new year, Aries. Embrace it with open arms because it’s your time to shine. Building connections will support you as you head into the future.

Libra (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Give your life a bit of a shake-up, Libra. Whether it’s sprucing up your living environment or developing new relationships, take it all in and create a supportive environment that meets your needs.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20) Use your energy to lean into your enthusiasm to fuel your journey. Dear Taurus, nurture your ambition and propel yourself into new life goals.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Take a step back in time, Scorpio, as you reconnect with people from our past – old friends and family. Plan a trip back to your “old stomping grounds” and relish in how far you’ve come.

Gemini (May 21 to June 21) You may look calm on the outside, Gemini, but not within. Take care and give yourself over to the turmoil as it will help build a strong foundation as you move forward. Cancer (June 22 to July 22) You can’t avoid the challenges ahead, Cancerians. But you can do it with others as you become more proactive to form deeper connections.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Look at your finances, dear Sag. Learn more about where you are and where you need to be and seek professional guidance to help you. This will help set you up for a more secure future. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) It’s time to reconnect with yourself, Capricorn. Dothings that nourish your spirit and get in touch with your core self.
