OVER THE BACK FENCE

Eighteen months into our pandemic world and one can only be hopeful that we’re going in the right direction. Although case numbers have been rising in the province over the last week or so, locally it seems as if we’ve hit a plateau. Let’s keep our fingers crossed it stays this way. As of today, just over 70 percent of Ontarians have received one dose of the vaccine, while 63.4 percent have gotten two doses. That’s not bad ... but there is still about 30 percent who are unvaccinated, for whatever reason. Which brings me to the topic of discussion today. I have a couple of friends with friends or family members who are not vaccinated. And who won’t get a vaccine. Some of these folks still believe that the global pandemic is a hoax and fake news. It’s not a hoax to more than 26,000 people in Canada and 4.3 million worldwide who have died from the virus. It’s not a hoax to more than 540,000 people in Ontario who have “recovered” but continue to feel the affects of the Coronavirus. And it’s not a hoax to those who have lost

loved ones. Other people want to “wait to see if the vaccine works.” Well, you may be waiting a long time before we’re able to unmask and get close to strangers again. In the meantime, though, you are putting those around you at risk. The dilemma for friends and family of the anti-vaxxers is how to include them going forward. If there’s a family gathering, where say 5 of the 15 people are not vaccinated, do you exclude those without the shot? Ask them to wear a mask and keep their distance for the duration of the event? And what do you do if they refuse to even wear a mask? For those in our population who are vulnerable, especially elderly relatives, do you want to play Russian roulette with this virus? I know I wouldn’t. But it’s a hard call to make. I understand that there are personal reasons for this attitude. And, in many ways, we have to respect their right to say no. But, at the same time, is it not the responsibility of all of us to do what we can to protect the health of others? In my opinion, that means “taking one for the team” and rolling up your sleeve. editor@thepromoter.ca

WILDERNESS PARK OPEN FOR VISITORS

Just wanted to let you know, if you have not visited Wilderness Park recently, now is a good time to go . The park is located just east of the Shell station on CKL 36. Look for the new sign. With all the rain in the last month and warm temperatures, the pollinator patch is at its best. Thanks to John Bick from the Horitcultural Society for creating name plates for many of the plants in the patch, and other volunteers including: the Environmental Action Bobcaygeon, and Port 32 for their help with mowing the pathway thru the patch so visitors can wonder thru and take pictures and learn more about nature. And, of course, volunteers painted the picnic tables and regularily do litter pick ups to keep the park looking its best. I have never seen the grass so green, and the city maintenance staff are doing a great job of mowing in the park, and grading the parking lot and pathways when necessary. The park is getting used more now than ever, partly because of Covid and restricted travel ,as well as our new sign out by CKL 36. Well worth a visit, now, and in all seasons!’ John Bush, Co President Environmental Action Bobcaygeon

KLFS MAKING A STINK

The Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) is excited to announce the kickoff of their 2021 Stinky Fish Challenge fundraiser. Local leaders Darryl James (solo artist and bassist of The Strumbellas), Leanna and Luis Segura (local entrepreneurs and co-owners of Fresh FueLL/North Ward Coffee Co.), as well as Patrick Lynch (Team Brad Bird at MinCom Plus Realty) will be putting their taste buds on the line to garner financial support for KLFS in their fight against food insecurity. The Challenger who raises the least amount of funds by August 27 must eat a can of Surströmming. Special ordered from Sweden, this lightly salted fermented Baltic Sea herring is known to be the “stinkiest” fish in the world. In 2018, KLFS did their first rendition of this Stinky Fish Challenge and raised over $3,000. Participants in 2018 were Police Chief Mark Mitchell, Community Advocate Mike Perry, and 91.9 BOB FM morning show hosts Bob and Julie. Out of community spirit, all participants shared the stinky fish meal, rather than sticking the “loser” with a full plate. Between August 6 and August 27, you can make your donation to save your choice of local leader from having to eat a plate of stinky fish. Keep track of who is in the lead by following Kawartha Lakes Food Source social media @ KawarthaLakesFoodSource. As well each Challenger has an individual campaign page for you to more easily make your donation through www.canadahelps.org. “Any chance to help in this community,” said Patrick Lynch, when asked why he wanted to do the Challenge. “I grew up here, live here, and I’m going to work hard to fundraise to help, but also so I don’t have to eat that Stinky Fish!” For more information about KLFS or the Stinky Fish Challenge, visit www.kawarthalakesfoodsource. com.

FIXING LONG-TERM CARE

By Bonnie Roe

Members of the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes LongTerm Care Coalition have presented a petition to local Member of Provincial Parliament, Laurie Scott. The petition, signed by more than 3,600 residents from across Haliburton County and the City of Kawartha Lakes, calls upon Laurie, as our elected representative, to take our concerns to the new Minister of LTC, Rod Phillips, the Minister of Health, Christine Elliott and Premier Doug Ford, to find immediate solutions to this long-standing crisis in LTC. LTC petition delivered: Pictured left to right … Lyn Ritchie, Bonnie Roe, Mike Perry, Susan Taylor

Bonnie Roe of Haliburton recounted at Scott’s office, “Changes have been needed for a long time. We know what needs to be done, it’s about taking action now on very specific ‘fixes’.” Five key areas for change were detailed in the petition, which was passed unanimously at a town hall meeting of more than 50 local residents earlier this year. They are: • amend the Canada Health Act to include LTC, to ensure public funding and national standards; • provide at least 4 Hours of Direct Care per day, per resident and improve working conditions for staff; • reinstate ‘spot’ quality, annual inspections and enforcement; • change the culture of care for our seniors – less institutional, more home like; • take the profits out of Long-Term Care. Coalition co-founder and Kawartha Lakes representative, Mike Perry, underscored local support for changes to local seniors’ care. “We all have a stake in this together. Caring for our frail seniors is a matter of what we value as a community for the common good. We need to change the system now including helping care workers and families.” Lyn Ritchie of Haliburton, who co-led in preparing the document, presented the petition formally to staff at Laurie Scott’s office, who thanked the Coalition for its work. The petition remains open for signature: www. ltcneedsyou.ca or call Mike Perry at 705-328-4479 or Bonnie Roe at 705-286-2414, to sign a paper copy.

THE HEAT IS ON

The arrival of extremely hot, humid weather to the area is prompting a reminder from the local Health Unit for people to take precautions to beat the heat. Environment Canada has issued a heat alert for Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes due to extreme hot temperatures over the next few days. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit says heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can be very dangerous, especially for infants, older adults, and people with chronic diseases. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, headache, fainting, paleness, weakness, tiredness, dizziness, and nausea.

“If people experience any heat-related illness or symptoms, they should seek medical attention,” says Bernie Mayer, Manager of Health Protection with the HKPR District Health Unit. “During extremely hot days like the ones we are currently experiencing, it’s important not to overdo things and instead drink plenty of water and seek out cool places.” During any heat wave, the Health Unit advises people to: • Avoid going out in the sun or heat when possible. • Stay cool, and if possible, stay in an airconditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, seek a cool public location to cool down while following COVID-19 prevention rules. To see if there is a cooling centre in your community, contact your local municipality. • When outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible. If you plan to go outside during a very hot day, do so early in the morning or evening when it is cooler. • Avoid outdoor sports and physical activity. • Wear loose-fitting, light clothing and a wide brimmed hat. • Drink lots of water, even if you don’t feel very thirsty. Avoid alcohol, coffee/tea and pop. • Check in regularly with vulnerable family, friends, neighbours and others who could be affected by the heat. Make sure they are OK and are wellhydrated. • Eat light, cool foods, and avoid heavy meals that involve using the oven or other hot appliances. • Keep shades, drapes and blinds closed on the

The self-guided trail, developed in 2017, has over 50 locations. There are a number of attractions that share the culture and heritage of our beautiful region. With cooler days approaching, grab your hoodies and head out for a drive. The Hunt explores the engineering marvels of the Trent-Severn Waterway, our heritage villages, historic houses and quaint cottages, as well as amphitheatres for live theatre and cozy storytelling. Not far from each Scavenger Hunt location are interesting artisans and craft cuisine nestled in villages with magnificent countryside vistas. Put together, it’s the best of Art and Heritage in Kawartha Lakes. A staple to any good road trip, a game of EyeSpy is the basis of the Cultural Scavenger Hunt. Participating in the scavenger hunt is a fun, COVID safe way to get out and tour Kawartha Lakes, and may even win participants some cool prizes! Helping the City of Kawartha Lakes bring the Cultural Scavenger Hunt to life is Brooke Hannah, a soon-to-be graduate of the Graphic Design and Visual Communication program at Fleming College in Peterborough. For more information about registrations and programs, visit www.settlersvillage.org.

CONTAMINATED MANGOES

Local residents are being asked to check their freezers for frozen mango products potentially contaminated with Hepatitis A, as some are known to have been distributed in the region. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit warns the frozen mango products suspected of being contaminated were sold in some stores in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. Anyone with this frozen fruit product at home is asked not to eat it, but instead immediately throw out the product or return it to the store. If anyone has eaten the affected product within the past 14 days, they need to contact their health care provider. Child care facilities, day camps, overnight camps and long-term care homes should also check their food products to determine if the recalled product was served. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a food recall warning on July 30 relating to Nature’s Touch Frozen Food Inc. Various brands of the company’s frozen mango products are possibly contaminated with Hepatitis A. The affected products were widely available in multiple grocery store chains and independent retailers in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Specific product information include: • Nature’s Touch frozen mangoes: 2 kg size; UPC: 873668001807; Best before date: Nov. 9, 2022 • Compliments frozen mango mania: 600 g size; UPC: 055742504309; Best before date: Nov. 10, 2022 and Dec. 18, 2022 • Irresistibles frozen mango chunks: 600 g size; UPC: 059749876001; Best before date: Nov. 10, 2022 • President’s Choice frozen mango chunks: 600 g size; UPC: 060383993870; Best before date: Nov. 6, 2022 and Nov. 10, 2022 “We strongly urge anyone who purchased these frozen mango products to avoid eating them and immediately dispose or return the items to the store,” says Dr. Natalie Bocking, Medical Officer of Health

with the HKPR District Health Unit. “If you have eaten this affected product within the last 14 days, please contact your health care provider or the Health Unit to receive post-exposure prophylaxis care, which may involve getting the Hepatitis A vaccine.” People can call the Health Unit at 1-866-8884577, ext. 1507 for more information. CHOIR LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS

Submitted by Ruth Fallding

The Kawartha Lakes Singers (KLS) choir has contributed to the cultural vitality of its community since 2008. With the vision of founding and current director Arlene Gray, the mixed 30-voice chorus has performed concerts with a wide variety of genres: classical, folk, Celtic, jazz, African- American spirituals, musical theatre and more. The choir is fortunate to have such a skilled choral director as well as accomplished accompanist, Gael Morrison. KLS performs three main concerts per season at Cambridge St. United Church in Lindsay. The church will also be their new rehearsal location. Plans are underway to perform with the Celtic group Clan Hannigan in February, 2022 and with the Northumberland Orchestra and Choir in April, 2022. KLS learns challenging repertoire and sight reading skills are a must. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm. Generally the season runs from September until May. The choir plans to resume rehearsals in midOctober with required Covid protocols. KLS is currently seeking new members and would love to hear from interested singers now in order to plan for the upcoming season. SHIRLEY VALENTINE IS BACK!

Globus Theatre is excited to be continuing their 18th summer season with one of Globus’ all-time most popular shows, the memorable Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell, starring Artistic Director Sarah Quick. 42 year-old, working-class Liverpudlian housewife Shirley is so bored with her life that she finds herself regularly talking to the wall. She dreams of drinking a glass of wine “in a country where the grape is grown” and, when she eventually embarks on her adventure and packs her bags for a fortnight in Greece…what she finds is a whole lot more! For those of you who remember the movie, or are fans of the theatrical version of Shirley Valentine, you won’t want to miss this show! As we come out of one of the world’s most difficult times, this comic tour-deforce will take the audience on an uplifting, poignant and ultimately heartwarming journey. “Shirley Valentine was first performed on the Globus Theatre stage in 2013,” says James Barrett, Director. “Earlier this year we did a survey as to what our audiences would like to see as we start to re-connect. Lots of patrons voted this show as one of their most treasured moments at Globus Theatre. The consensus was that Sarah was the quintessential Shirley...it’s a beautiful piece of theatre.” The show runs until August 28. Dinner and Show tickets are $77, while show tickets for August 17 at 8pm and August 19 at 2pm are $39.50. All prices are subject to HST and a $2 per ticket fee. You can get yours by calling the box office at 705738-2037.

MOVE THE NEEDLE

By Dr. Natalie Bocking, Medical Officer of Health HKPR District Health Unit

As parents, we want what’s best for our children and teens. We want to offer support, protection, and advice. Although hugs may be a tougher sell for teenagers, they are important too – just like COVID-19 vaccines. Right now, getting our youth vaccinated for COVID-19 is essential, especially before the start of school. The headlines are correct, a fourth wave of COVID-19 is likely this fall. While many older people are fully vaccinated, young people 12 to 17 years of age have the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rate of any age group in our region. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective

and approved for use in anyone 12 years and older (COVID-19 vaccines for younger children are still in clinical trials and awaiting regulatory approval for use). Two doses of Pfizer vaccine are needed for full protection, and the good news, is that there is plenty of supply locally, so no youth has to go unvaccinated and unprotected. We know our youth are strong, resilient, and if sick with COVID-19, usually experience mild side effects. This is not the case for others whom a youth may encounter, should they be infected with COVID-19. With an increase in fully vaccinated youth, we stand a better chance against a fourth COVID-19 wave caused by the highly-infectious Delta variant. Simply put, if our young, able-bodied constituents aren’t protected from this even more dangerous variant, then neither are we as a community. Let’s encourage our teens to get vaccinated. Urge them to do it for the grandparent who has been isolated in a long-term care home and wants to give her grandchild a big hug. Do it so they can go back to in-person learning in September to see all their friends and favourite teachers. Do it so they can get back to what they love doing – hockey, dance, art class or hanging out with friends. With fall, a new school year and (unfortunately) a fourth COVID-19 wave quickly approaching, the time to act, the time to get vaccinated is now. As parents, we need to move the needle and encourage our youth to get vaccinated. For their sake, our piece of mind, and our community’s protection!

You’ve been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, now what? Are you fully immunized (e.g. it has been 14 or more days since your final dose)? No

conditions of 2020 couldn’t permit a tournament that year, Jim, Nicole and Kim were determined to host a COVID-compliant event this year, and so June 26, they hosted 48 golfers who could enjoy a safe fun experience and renew some friendly team rivalries at the Dunsford Golf Course. Just as other years, Coach and Horses provided a reception after the tournament and a representative from APCH was on hand to thank golfers, organizers, and Coach and Horses staff. Things were streamlined. In consideration of the economics of this COVID year,

For 15 years Jim Negus has been organizing charity golf tournaments, and, since 2006, proceeds have gone to A Place Called Home. Jim consulted with Dave Tilley, Executive Director of APCH when the Santa Clause Stocking Fund - the tournament’s first charity - closed shop, and then took the idea to Kim Wagg and Nicole Rochette, co-owners of the Coach and Horses. They were immediately on board, and while Jim organized the golf, Kim and Nicole organized the reception. For Jim, the association with APCH has been an eye-opener. For one thing, he says “I didn’t realize it was families. There’s a perception out there that the organization is just for drug addicts.” While COVID

there was no prize table and no appeal to merchants for prizes, but as Jim says of the reason for conducting this event, “It’s about the need.” This year’s tournament raised over $1,200 to support APCH’s work in Lindsay, providing shelter and support for those who find themselves homeless or at risk of homelessness. Jim wishes it was more, knowing that the funds are needed to complete the construction of a new shelter. When Jim thinks about the need for a new building to serve those who are homeless in Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton, he says, “I think we need more. It’s a step in the right direction but it needs more support from all levels of government because there is so much support from the community.” The new build is the biggest project in the agency’s history. With major funding support from City of Kawartha Lakes and Ontario governments, the volunteer Board of APCH has a fundraising target of $1.5 million to complete the project. The money raised in this golf tournament, with the support of the ownership team at Coach and Horses, is a prime example of the community support that is at the heart of the mission of A Place Called Home -- getting folks off the street and on their feet. As Chair of the volunteer Board of Directors of APCH, Karen Round says, “I am humbled by the generous support to date from our communities, knowing we are all experiencing impacts from the pandemic. But we do need your support. We are grateful to golfers who participated in this tournament and to Jim, Nicole, and Kim for their example of leadership from the local business community. To those of you who can, we ask you to make A Place Called Home your charity of choice.” Next year Jim, Nicole and Kim have plans for a full-fledged tournament tentatively scheduled for July 9 2022 at the Dunsford Golf Club.

LEAK DETECTION SURVEYING

Residents in Bobcaygeon are being notified that leak detection surveying will take place between August 16 and August 20, 2021. Staff, as well as contractors from Watermark Solutions Ltd., will be onsite from 9pm to 5am during that week. Leak detection is a systematic search within a distribution system to identify leaks, water loss and low flows. While many leaks are detected when water is observed flowing or pooling out of the ground, an effective leakage survey uses electronic equipment to identify leak sounds and/or vibrations to pinpoint the precise location of underground leaks. This is performed by connecting the devices to fire hydrants and service valves in order to pick up vibrations. The municipality will be conducting this testing at night when there is limited extraneous noise and traffic. While water services should remain unaffected by this surveying, residents may see staff wearing bright colours with trucks and equipment on the street outside homes at night. All municipal staff carry identification that includes the City logo. Should you have any questions, please call Customer Service at 705-324-9411.

After months of operating large mass immunization clinic sites throughout the region, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is shifting its COVID-19 vaccination efforts in the coming weeks. As of Friday, September 3, the mass immunization clinics will close. Instead, the Health Unit will look to further focus efforts by offering more mobile and pop-up clinics in parts of its region where COVID-19 vaccination rates are lower and accessing clinics may be a challenge. “We want to increase vaccine uptake and access by taking the vaccine into the community through mobile and pop-up clinics,” says Dr. Natalie Bocking, Medical Officer of Health with the HKPR District Health Unit. Between now and Sept. 3, walk-ins and appointments will continue to be offered at the Health Unit’s clinic sites in Cobourg, Campbellford, Minden and Fenelon Falls. Both mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) are available at these clinics. A complete list of dates, time and locations for these clinics is available at www.hkpr.on.ca. Many pharmacies and health care providers in the Health Unit region also continue to offer COVID-19 vaccines. The Health Unit’s decision follows a similar decision by Ross Memorial Hospital to close its drivethrough clinic at the Lindsay Exhibition as of August 27.

important to remember during this phase as you may be faced with a challenge requiring a conscious decision to “hold your tongue”.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) You are never too old or too young to change course, Aquarius. Jump in! Don’t wait – and then wonder “what might have been”!

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Keep an eye on your mailbox, Leo, because something special may appear in it one of these days. We hope it will bring you enjoyment!

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) “Never be afraid to sit awhile and think.”: Lorraine Hansberry. Good words of advice, Pisces, at any time, but maybe even more so now. “Alone time” can be a precious gift.

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Here’s a good tip, Virgo: If you are hungry, angry, lonely, tired or sad do not make big decisions, or take important choices. Learn when your best moments are and act accordingly.

Aries (March 21 to April 20) Other people’s negativity is not your problem, Aries – and there is not much you can do about it, anyway. As much as possible, walk away.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Have you ever noticed how, sometimes, the words a person is saying don’t quite match that person’s body language? Go with the body! It’s much more trustworthy than a vocabulary!

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Do you know the power of encouragement, Taurus? Co-workers, children, other family members, friends – even strangers on the street – can all benefit from a simple shot in the arm. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Although there have been and will be tough days, Gemini, the beauty of this world is that you can always start over the very next day. So, never give up.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Find your own special way to relax, Scorpio. There is no onesize-fits-all – there are many opportunities through nature, meditation, exercise, or even reading a book. Find yours! Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Every little struggle is a step forward, dear Sag. And you have experienced a lot of woe lately – keep moving along and know that many are cheering you on!
