OVER THE BACK FENCE

Have you ever been driving along the road and had a thought of “maybe I should just move over a bit” and narrowly missed a pothole or oncoming vehicle? Have you ever hesitated, even for just a few minutes, to go out only to find out that, if you had left when you were going to, you might have been one of those vehicles in the pileup on the 401? Have you ever decided to use the railing of the stairs, which you never usually do, and your knee gives out and the only thing keeping you upright is your grip on the railing? Do you call that luck? Or is there something else at play? A friend of mine had an experience like that during the snowstorm last week. She was driving home on a snow-covered road and “something told her” to drive farther on the right. She listened to that little voice... and avoided a collision with a vehicle coming the other way on her side of

the road. That got me thinking about intuition and what’s really at play in the bigger scheme of the universe. We all have that little voice in us. Whether you believe it’s an angel on your shoulder or just a sixth sense, it’s there. And there’s some science to back it up. According the Harvard Business Review, “Despite popular belief, there’s a deep neurological basis for intuition. Scientists call the stomach the “second brain” for a reason. There’s a vast neural network of 100 million neurons lining your entire digestive tract. That’s more neurons than are found in the spinal cord, which points to the gut’s incredible processing abilities.” “When you approach a decision intuitively, your brain works in tandem with your gut to quickly assess all your memories, past learnings, personal needs, and preferences and then makes the wisest decision given the context. In this way, intuition is a form of emotional and experiential data.” Every culture has it’s terminology for a “hunch” or “gut instinct.” Trust it! editor@thepromoter.ca

PRIORITIZE FIRE SAFETY

Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service (KLFRS) has concluded its Keep The Wreath Green campaign for December 2023, an initiative aimed at promoting fire safety and prevention during the holiday season. Unfortunately, the campaign was punctuated by six fires, resulting in almost $1.8 million in damages and the tragic loss of one individual. The Keep The Wreath Green holiday safety program, a symbolic representation of fire incidents, saw a total of six green bulbs on the wreath being replaced with red bulbs to signify each fire occurrence. This stark reminder of the real impact of fires in our community reinforces the importance of fire safety and prevention measures. “These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the destructive power of fires and the critical need for residents to be vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety of their homes and loved ones,” said Fire Prevention Public Educator Katie Dukelow. “Our hearts go out to the family affected by the tragic loss during one of these incidents, and we are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent such

occurrences in the future.” KLFRS would like to use this unfortunate series of events as an opportunity to encourage residents to prioritize fire safety and adopt preventive measures in their homes. To assist in this effort, they have provided the following fire prevention tips: • Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms: Ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home and carbon monoxide alarms are installed outside all sleeping areas, test them monthly to guarantee functionality. • Create an Escape Plan: Develop a fire escape plan with your family, designating a meeting point outside the home. • Check Heating Devices: If you use space heaters or fireplaces, inspect them regularly to prevent malfunctions and keep flammable materials at a safe distance. • Kitchen Safety: Exercise caution while cooking, and never leave cooking appliances unattended. Keep flammable items away from the stove. • Electrical Safety: Avoid overloading electrical outlets and replace damaged cords promptly. Consider the age of electrical appliances and replace them if necessary. • Candle Safety: Use candles responsibly, placing them in sturdy holders and never leave them burning unattended. • Outdoor Fires: Exercise caution with outdoor fires and ensure they are properly extinguished before leaving them unattended. • Smoking Safety: If you smoke, do so outside and ensure cigarette butts are properly extinguished in non-combustible containers. • Lithium-ion Battery Charging: Lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in various e-bikes and other electronic devices, can pose a fire hazard if mishandled, damaged, or improperly charged. Understanding and following proper usage practices is crucial in preventing accidents and ensuring public safety. Learn more about lithiumion battery safety here. KLFRS remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of the community and urges residents to take these precautions seriously. By working together, we can ensure a safer environment for all.

BACK TO BASICS

The Ontario government is taking continued action to emphasize back-to-basics learning by introducing mandatory learning through clear and direct instruction in reading, writing and math for kindergarten students. Combined with hands-on and play-based learning, this new kindergarten curriculum will ensure students entering Grade 1 across the province have the foundational skills in literacy and math and intellectual growth that will help set them up for long-term success. All students will soon benefit from evidencebased clear and direct instruction in literacy for the first time to build their vocabulary and instil a passion for reading and writing. New and mandatory learning will include the understanding of sound-letter relationships, developing phonics knowledge and using specific vocabulary. For example, as children are constructing a house with building blocks and other materials, the educator would intentionally use new words to build student vocabulary. “It’s critical that our youngest students develop core foundational skills earlier on in their lives,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. “That is why we are introducing a new kindergarten curriculum that will help to lay the foundation for strong reading, writing and math skills from day one. Our government will continue to relentlessly advance back-to-basics education that restores the focus on academic achievement, common sense and excellence in literacy and STEM disciplines.” New learning expectations are also being added to the kindergarten curriculum. In math, clear and direct instruction in foundational numeracy skills will be provided to all students in addition to daily opportunities to explore math concepts through regular classroom activities. All students will start to learn about fractions, coding and patterns earlier in their education. These new lessons will build foundational math concepts and skills that are the gateway to the disciplines of science, technology and engineering, as well as construction, skilled trades and architecture. The changes and supports, which will be in place starting in September 2025, are the next step in Ontario’s plan to modernize the curriculum and ensure every student has the skills to succeed in the classroom and prepare them for whatever path they choose.

Horoscopes

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Aquarius, try not to push too hard, during this phase, to reach a lot of goals you have set for yourself. Take it easy. Some days are meant to be “found” days – when nothing is planned and you can relax! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Financial issues can be tough at this time of year, Pisces. Take things slowly. Visit a credit counsellor, if need be. Try not to stress! Aries (March 21 to April 20) “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”: Confucius. Everything and EVERYONE, Aries! Look for beauty everyday, in unexpected places, and you will be surprised what you may see. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) It’s time to take a good, hard look at your career path, Taurus. Is it time for a change, or are you happy with your job and satisfied that it is the one for you? And if you do want a change, don’t think it’s too late!

January 26 to February 8 By Melodie McCullough

you enjoy musical or theatrical performances from the audience, or you jump in and entertain from the stage, make them part of your life. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Dear Virgo: You are invited to HOPE! Hope is something that can sustain us when all else is bleak. Try to hang on to it when things get tough. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) “Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others; because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval; because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.”: Lao Tzu. This is a reminder, Libra, that you don’t have to brag and boast to prove your worth - people will know your value by the confidence you show in yourself. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) New friends will soon enter your life, Scorpio! Be open to the diversity they bring and the warmth they offer you.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Did you make someone’s day today, Gemini? Or maybe someone made yours? Either way, it means it’s been a good day all around. Spread the love!

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Make a plan, Sagittarius, and stay the course. The plan doesn’t have to be for years ahead - only a few weeks, if that is what is needed. But try your darndest to stick to it!

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) There’s no shame in taking things slowly right now, Cancer. Winter is a time to hibernate, a time of unhurriedness, and a time to reflect. Curl up inside and dream!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Things are looking up, Cap! Your health is improving and Spring is coming slowly but surely. Focus on the bright days ahead - even if it means taking things slowly for a while - there are violets under the snow!

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) The arts are taking over! And you, Leo, can be right in the middle of it. Whether
