COVER STORY Texas band’s 9th studio album, ‘Sunset Motel’, is hailed as ‘best’ of their two-decade career By L. Kent Wolgamott

There’s no better way to celebrate 20 years as a band than to put out the best album of a twodecade career. At least that’s the philosophy of Reckless Kelly. With frontman Willy Braun and his multi-instrumentalist brother Cody producing and appearances by among others, The Mastersons, Bukka Allen and Rosie Flores, along with their younger brothers, Micky and Gary, the Texas band’s ninth studio album, “Sunset Motel,” is their top recording yet. “It’s always the goal to top what you did last time,” Cody Braun said in a recent phone interview. “It’s definitely a good representation of the band. We try to get better every year and learn new tricks in the studio. The cool thing about this one is we got to go back to Arlyn Studio, where we made our first record. It was just really comfortable, a good time in the studio.” The record is filled with music that refines Reckless Kelly’s mix of rock ‘n’ roll and country into a swinging, twangy sound that doesn’t fit easily into any category or genre. “We’ve always been a country rock band,” Braun said. “We’ve always wanted to push that edge. It’s hilarious to me to see where country radio has gone. Ten years ago, they were telling us we were too rock ‘n’ roll Now it’s going completely to the other side with the rap and they’re still not playing us. It definitely goes to show if you’re not in the right pockets in Nashville, you’re not going to get played on the radio.” Reckless Kelly addresses just that on “Radio,” a “Sunset Motel” song that kicks off with radio static, then rock ‘n’ rolls through a making-it-in-the-business

tale anchored lines like “you want the money and the fame and the sold out shows, you’ve got to get on the radio.” Well, maybe not. That’s what Braun and Reckless Kelly have discovered and what Sturgill Simpson has, of late, been proclaiming in interviews. “He (Simpson) says it plainly -- We don’t need Nashville anymore,” Braun said. “We don’t need Music Row. We’re selling records and getting people out to our shows. It’s great to see people like Sturgill, Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton doing what they’re doing -- kind of sticking it to them. There are people out there hungry for real music. But that music isn’t getting played on the radio.” That, in part, is because Texas music doesn’t fit easily into the commercial country format -- too country for rock radio and too rock for Americana. “Musically, it’s a mix of country, blues, rock ‘n’ roll, Southern rock, that’s what I like about it,” Braun said. “The staunch Americana Nashville scene is more dipped in bluegrass and traditional country. I see the Texas sound as being more progressive and built on songwriters like Robert Earl Keen, Joe Ely, Steve Earle. Billy Joe Shaver is another one who really influenced us. Those are the guys we’ve looked up to.” They’ve done so since they moved the band from Oregon to Austin. The Brauns grew up in Idaho and learned about music playing in their dad’s Western swing band that not only was a regional draw but landed appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” In the mid-’90s the brothers put together the first versions of their band, which takes its name from the famed Australian outlaw Ned Kelly. They spent about six months in Oregon before moving to Austin. “We moved here in ‘96 and have

always been a part of the scene,” Braun said. “But we don’t have any songs about Texas. We’re not from here and we’re not going to try to sing about something we don’t know about.” Winning the Austin Music Award for Best Roots Band three years running while making a series of well-regarded records, Reckless Kelly also was relentless, getting out of Austin, then out of Texas, spreading its music across the country, one show at a time. “We’re lucky when we first moved to Texas we got a booking agent who said ‘You go out and play these places, even though it sucks. You’re going to play to bartenders and cocktail waitress, but you’ve got to do it,’’’ Braun said. “I’m so glad we did. Now we can go out and come home with money in our pockets.” The band’s still out all the time. Braun had just finished a booking call that briefed the band on shows that were being scheduled months in advance. That’s just part of doing business for the band. “I didn’t think it would happen this fast,” Braun said. “We never had anything to fall back on, any other plans. It can be a grind like any other job at times. But we really enjoy what we’re doing. It’s easy to look up and go ‘shoot 20 years have gone by.’ It’s harder to remember them.” But he does remember some things -- highlights like breaking through with big shows for the first time in each market the band plays, its annual Braun Brothers Reunion Festival held in Idaho and its charity events that have raised $300,000 to rebuild

baseball fields and help with Austin’s Little League programs. The Brauns, you see, are “baseball geeks,” who started singing the National Anthem at major league parks together, then added the band. They’ve now performed at a dozen stadiums. “Our goal is to do every one of them in America,” Braun said. “There are a lot of ballplayers who are from Texas and fans of Texas music. We’ll get to the ballpark to do the anthem and they’ll go ‘So and so wants you down in the dugout, they’re fans of your music.’ We’re like ‘Huh?” The best way to get a good seat is to sing the National Anthem.” Reckless Kelly will perform a show Sunday, June 10, at the Broadberry, located at 2729 W. and compassionate. If there is a melancholy thread in his lyrics and music, it is one justiﬁed by the feelings and circumstances he elucidates and it is impossible not to share his emotions with him. While Caroline Spence may not look like one of the road-hardened troubadours of America’s past, with the release of Spades & Roses, the young songwriter from Charlottesville proves she is every bit as serious. This award recognizes schools throughout the Commonwealth who have superior performing ensembles (Band, Choir, and Orchestra).The band recently competed in the Musicale Band Competition in Williamsburg, Virginia. They were awarded Grand Champion Jazz Band. The Short Pump Middle School Jazz Band has been a vibrant part of the school and community for the past 27 years. This auditioned group plays many times throughout the year for all type of events. Recently, the group competed at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and received a ﬁrst place trophy with a special award going to the rhythm section for their outstanding performance. As Hause, a Philadelphia native, began penning new music for a new album from The Loved Ones, it became clear that the group, who had taken a break after their second album, had stalled. These songs, however, which showcased a clear thematic journey, were meant to be vocalized by Hause and over the past few years he transformed them into Devour. Hause solidified the album’s sequence before even going into the studio, aiming to craft a narrative arc that drove the album from its dark, heavy first half into a lighter, more hopeful tone. A thematic line of melody runs through the songs, reflecting the overarching ideas in the music itself. The disc explores the heartbreak of shattered childhood promises of a better world and concludes with optimistic hope.

Tret Fure: Tret Fure began her career at the age of 16, singing in coffeehouses and campuses in the Midwest. At 19, she moved to LA in hopes of obtaining a record deal. Within a year she was performing as guitarist and vocalist for Spencer Davis, touring with him and penning the single for his album “Mousetrap”. She went on to record her own album in 1973 on MCA/UNI Records, with the late Lowell George of Little Feat as her producer. With the success of that release, she opened for such bands as Yes, Poco, and the J Geils Band. A proliﬁc artist in the contemporary singer-songwriter arena, Tret Fure has released 15 albums and CDs over the course of her 48 year career. In addition to being a gifted songwriter, Fure has engineered and produced countless recordings by a variety of artists, including her own work. Her acclaimed solo releases include “Tret Fure” (1973), “Terminal Hold” (1984), and others, and “Back Home” (2001) took both album of the year and single of the year awards for 2001 from OutVoice Top 40. Tret Fure will be performing at 8 p.m. at The Tin Pan, 8982 Quioccasin Road in Richmond on Wednesday, June 6.

Regina Carter: Sony Masterworks recording artist Regina Carter is the foremost jazz violinist of her generation. Her quest for beauty combined with her passion for excellence did not escape the attention of the MacArthur Foundation, who awarded Regina their prestigious fellowship “genius grant.” Regina’s recent release, Ella: Accentuate the Positive, and touring program, Simply Ella, mark the 100th birthday of a musical legend. The program celebrates the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald – THE source of Regina’s musical inspiration. An inﬂuence she has cherished throughout her life, Regina describes her visceral connection to Ella’s music: “Growing up in Detroit, there was always music playing in our home. While there was a variety of music I enjoyed, there were a few recordings and artists I found consistently captivating. Ella Fitzgerald was one of these exceptions. If his health continues to be a non-issue, many surmise it will only be a matter time before Tiger Woods earns another PGA Tour win. He’ll be seeking just that when the FedEx St. Jude Classic gets underway at the TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee Thursday, June 7 on GOLF Channel. Coverage continues on GOLF Friday through Sunday, with CBS also providing coverage Saturday and Sunday. This will be the last year that the FedEx St. Jude Classic will be played in June. Next year it will become one of the World Golf Championships and will move to August, replacing the current WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Woods’ 79 PGA Tour wins are only three behind those of Sam Snead, who owns the record at 82. Woods, who has never won this tournament, is bouncing back from four back surgeries dating back to 2014. He was basically born into golfing and at age 2 was featured putting with Bob Hope on the Mike Douglas Show. Soon, he was playing entire rounds of golf, and by age 11 could beat his father on the golf course. By the time he was a teenager, his stock was rising. Once on the PGA Tour, the winning began, including 14 majors. Woods was young and in excellent shape, inspiring such traits in many of today’s top players. After yet another round of surgery in early 2017, he was back on the golf course in November with President Donald Trump, and back on the PGA Tour early this year.

Bonnie Nolan is a woman in for a rude awakening – and it’s probably the best thing that could happen to her. As played by Alicia Silverstone (“Clueless”) on the half-hour comedy “American Woman,” premiering Thursday, June 7, on Paramount Network, she’s the 1970s Beverly Hills trophy wife of Steve (James Tupper, “Grey’s Anatomy”), a realtor whose substantial commissions have them and their two daughters sitting pretty in their swanky SoCal home. That is, until she catches him cheating on her, and she shows him the door. Now with a divorce looming, Bonnie is forced to stand on her own two feet for the first time and support the kids, but with no marketable skills that won’t be easy. Fortunately she has two supportive best friends ready to help: Kathleen (Mena Suvari, “American Beauty”), a woman living off Daddy’s money with the help of closeted gay boyfriend Greg (Cheyenne Jackson, “30 Rock”); and Diana (Jennifer Bartels, “Broken”), a singleton stuck in an unsatisfying life and bank job. The series is full of the trappings of the ’70s – bell-bottoms, pantsuits and references to Richard Nixon, along with lots of trysts, drug use and cigarette smoking – and is based on the life of Kyle Richards (“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”), a series co-executive producer on whose late mother the character of Bonnie is modeled. “It’s a real survival story,” Silverstone explains, “and it’s a real awakening and a liberation story of all three females, finding their voices and being liberated and being brave and taking risks, and Bonnie’s at the center of that. She does it first, like she’s the one who goes and burns the house down. She basically burns the house down and she’s like, ‘Wait a second, I have nothing. How

am I going to get back?’ And her friends are there to help her, but then they have their own very, very deep, interesting stories.” Indeed, while Bonnie struggles to get on her feet and Diana languishes in frustration, rich girl Kathleen tries to make a go of it by opening her own casting agency with Greg. Her friends warn her he’s interested in her only for her money, but both Kathleen and the actress playing her, Suvari, see a deeper connection there. “That’s what’s so beautiful,” Suvari says, “is that it really is about a soul connection, people that are attracted to one another and both sort of not living in this honest space within themselves. Because I think with Greg, he’s struggling with his own form of identity. And then with Kathleen, she is to a certain extent so desperate to just be loved and so used to keeping up appearances and everything is OK. ... It’s picture-perfect, but then it’s really not. As its third season continues, what do you see as the difference of “Code Black” in relation to other medical shows?

(The setting) serves a different community because it’s a county hospital, and that’s what makes the show so incredibly resonant for me ... that (a character) can come in and be the voice for something like affordable health care. A lot of the time, the reason doctors go into the practice is to care for the community, and that makes this less of a technical show. Every time you turn around, there’s another doctor show on the air, and I think what marks this one as different is that we keep that community voice in the writing. I love that. “Code Black” got a very late start on its season by returning in April. Are you satisfied with the scheduling?

What I’ve learned from being in the business is that there’s a certain element of television where you just throw up your hands and say, “It’s out of my control.” It’s like that serenity prayer, really ... “Accept the things you can’t change, and change the things you can.”

My hope is that the audience continues to respond to the show. It would be nice to have a slam-dunk hit, but that’s almost impossible – or, at least, really very hard – in this day and age, with the competition from cable. My eyes are wide open. You recently became an author with “The Seasons of My Mother: A Memoir of Love, Family and Flowers,” which deals with your relationship with your mother and her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. How did you find doing it?

I’d be editing the book left, right and center if I could ... but at some point, you have to stop and say, “This is it.” It was a great process. I just wish my mom had been alongside me during it.

Ari Graynor OF ‘I’M DYING UP HERE’ ON SHOWTIME Had you tried stand-up comedy prior to your role as Cassie on “I’m Dying Up Here”?

I did a bit. You know, I come from theater so I’ve done a lot of comedy on stage. Of course, that is a wildly different than standing nakedly on stage by yourself with a microphone sharing yourself. There is no character to hide behind. So that was a very different experience for me. I felt like I had some handle on how to sell a joke, but in terms of that really raw experience of just being yourself talking to an audience, that was not my comfort zone. I ended up doing a couple of open mikes just to know that I could do it, to give it a try to see how terrifying it was, and I’m really glad I did. And this whole process of being part of the show has given me such a different outlook on stand-up and such a deep respect for the work that people do up there that is so layered and so multifaceted.

Many times, you see a new restaurant and think that it might be a good place to try at some point. Sometimes, the best discoveries are the little, hidden gems that once you find them, you can’t believe you lived without. You need to discover Petersburg’s new Restaurant Mary’s, because it is just one of those places. Among the other dishes offered by this talented chef is the specialty of the house, Chiliaquiles Desayuno Mary’s. Chilaquiles is a traditional dish and the name is derived from the Nahuatl word ch ı laquilitl. To pronounce chilaquiles, say “chee-lá-ki-lays.” Desayuno literally translates to “Breakfast” in English and you pronounce it “des-aý-uno.” The dish features totopos, which are corn

tortillas that are quartered and lightly fried and then softened by simmering in red mole sauce. Slow roasted chicken is added and then garnished on the plate with sour cream and Cotija cheese. Cotija cheese is a white, crumbly cheese that resembles feta. Served with two Sunnyside up eggs with avocado slices on top and a side of Mexican rice with sliced tomatoes and onions and their secret spicy sauce, this is more than just breakfast. It will stick with you. This traditional Mexican recipe was created for the restaurant by chef and restaurant namesake Mary. They also have their ABC license, so you can get your favorite drinks with your meal. They are open every day except Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
