Fort Lee CMC What an exciting year 2012 is proving to be for the Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce! We are showing growth in almost every aspect of our mission: promoting Economic Growth, Workforce Development, and Community Connections. To engage leaders of the business community and governmental bodies, the Chamber is hosting Business Roundtables throughout the year. Our ability to communicate and provide visibility for our membership continues to be enhanced with the use of our Facebook page while we enter the completion phase of our new Web Site. If you want to see what your chamber has been doing the first half of 2012, just visit our Facebook page! The staff is doing a great job providing information on our expanding membership and spotlighting events.

There are several upcoming dates you need to mark on your calendar. The first one is to support the students and volunteers of the JOBS Program on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at their Graduation/ Closing ceremony to be held at the newly renovated Maloney Lofts, Hopewell.The students will have

completed their summer internships and this year we need a show of support from the business community in appreciation of the workforce skills they have learned.

One of the most important events to attend this year is our Annual Dinner at the Lee Club, Fort Lee. The dinner is scheduled for Thursday, September 27, 2012. In our continued efforts to create a better place to live, work and play for each of our communities, this year we have engaged a speaker that we believe will motivate our community into action. You do not want to miss this event! Look for more information on how you can sponsor our efforts to bring this speaker to our community.

The Hopewell-Prince George Chamber has a dedicated and engaging board of directors, staff and membership who continue to support a vision for a better future. I want to thank the board and staff for their tireless efforts in bringing forth this vision, and thank you, the membership, for continuing to be an active supporter of the Chamber of Commerce.

Prince George Promise

Regional Leadership Program Area Chamber Leaders have been meeting with Southside Community Partners to examine the potential value of a regional leadership development program for the community. In July, an expanded group met at the Dinwiddie Enhancement Center; facilitated by Christine Kennedy, Executive Vice President of the Lynchburg Regional Chamber and Leadership & Life Coach of the Lynchburg Program.

New Members Get Visibility Chamber Membership increases visibility of your business in the community.

A study commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) with support from Small Business Network, Inc. produced the following results: • Most consumers (59%) think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29% more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26% more effective for communicating that a business is reputable.

HR Informal Meet-Up Breakfast A start-up group of HR managers in the region enjoyed a dutch treat breakfast on July 18 from 8:00-9:00AM at Prince George Family Barbecue. New this year, the Chamber is offering a series of Business Roundtables, designed to engage (10-12) business and community leaders in a stimulating discussion requested by a Member. Each Business Roundtable has an exclusive Sponsor who selects the topic and facilitates the discussion. A light lunch is provided.

The Chamber Business Roundtable held June 20th was sponsored by Supervisor William F. “Bill” Gandel from Prince George County. Jeff Stoke, Prince George Deputy County Administrator and Director of Economic Development, gave a presentation about the economic base growth theory and its applications in a global economy. Attendees were guided through how an economic analysis measures a community and what factors cause growth and contraction. Discussion revolved around such topics as housing, retail, manufacturing, and how each sector is measured and relates to one another. A key concept reviewed was the distinction between economic development, community development and workforce development yet, how all three are required for a healthy community.

Maj. Gen. Larry D. Wyche assumed command of the Combined Arms Support Command and Sustainment Center of Excellence in a ceremony June 26. Wyche, a native of Emporia, Va., took command from Maj. Gen. James L. Hodge, who retired in a separate ceremony. Wyche congratulated Hodge on his years of service and said he was honored to join the CASCOM and Fort Lee team. Chamber Challenge The support for the first Governor’s Food Bowl Chamber Challenge has been great! The team leaders Sarita Harding, Andrea Melton, and Brenda Miller want to thank everyone in the HPG community who supported the drive by donating food and funds. The contest challenged chambers throughout the Commonwealth to compete with each other to see who could contribute the most to the Central Virginia Food Bank during the period of Memorial Day to 4th of July. This drive was important to us because our area will receive 408,050 lbs. from the food bank in 2012-2013.

Over the course of the challenge, the HPG chamber volunteers collected 6,037 lbs! To make it more fun we also created our own Member to Member challenge to see which business would contribute the most in the category of small, medium, and large businesses.

A total of 46 students were matched to jobs with 17 different employers. 12 of the students were sponsored and 34 are being paid by employers. All students began working after June 15, 2012.

The Cameron Foundation awarded The JOBS Program with a $15,000 Grant on July 5, 2012. There are four areas the grant may be used: Strategic Planning, Program Evaluation, Marketing/Communications, and Fund Raising.

The JOBS Program Graduation Ceremony will be held in a new location, the Hopewell Lofts Auditorium, and to be sponsored by Rolls-Royce Crosspointe.

2012 Chamber Ambassadors The Chamber appreciates all of the ambassadors for their volunteerism and efforts in 2012.

Meet the Ambassadors Purpose: The Ambassadors Committee is responsible for promoting the HPG Chamber through their presence at grand openings, ribbon cuttings, and military ceremonies. Additionally, we monitor the needs of our Membership for business growth through visits to explain how their Membership benefits can increase their visibility and growth. We also support all of the Chamber’s premier events as the primary networkers that bring businesses together. Goals: In 2011, our committee made a goal to visit at least 80 Members and discuss their Membership benefits. In 2012, we have set our sights even higher with two new initiatives; first, we wanted to increase our visibility with new Members by presenting them with a welcome basket that contains promotional items donated by other Members. Secondly, we received feedback from our Membership that a resource packet with Membership benefits included would be beneficial. We are close to meeting this critical requirement but still need some sponsors to advertise on the packet to cover the costs. Welcome New Ambassador Chair: Heath McDaniel Heath McDaniel is a Personal Wealth Advisor with McDaniel Financial Group and works with individuals and businesses to design custom investment portfolios and employee benefit plans. Heath is an alumnus of Virginia Tech and spends his fall Saturdays following and cheering on the Hokies. Heath is a lifetime resident of the Tri-Cities area and currently resides in Prince George County and enjoys spending his free time with his wife, Emily, and his two children, Avery and Atticus.

Robin Chenail joined John Randolph Medical Center (JRMC) in April 2012 as the Human Resources Administrator. She is responsible for leading the Human Resources Department as well as overseeing the Organizational Development, Employee Health, Volunteer Services and Pastoral Care departments. Prior to joining JRMC, Robin held the position as the first appointed Director of Operations at Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI); the only proton therapy center in Virginia, and one of only nine proton facilities in the United States. Robin was responsible for the overall smooth dayto-day operations, human resources, and compliance.

Prior to HUPTI, Robin was a Director of Human Resources at Riverside Health System, including Riverside Medical Group, the largest multispecialty physician practice group in Virginia; responsible for supporting 1,500 employees at over 130 sites, including physicians, healthcare providers, management, professionals and ancillary staff for the physician practices, ambulatory surgery centers, product service lines, pharmacy services, radiation oncology facility sites, and emergency medicine for three acute care hospitals.

Robin has significant leadership and professional experience in Operations and Human Resources management, including physician practice management and integration, recruitment activities, mergers and acquisitions, business operations, human resources administration and analysis, billing, collections, accounting, professional development, policy and procedure application, market trend analysis, complex benefit package administration, employee relations and compliance.

She has developed successful working relationships with a wide variety of management teams, physicians, healthcare providers, professionals, and educators; and is passionate about life-long learning.
