When Brad Keselowski isn’t on the track, you might be able to find him on his smartphone, Twittering away to his 300,000-plus followers. In fact, sometimes he can be found Tweeting from behind the wheel. And that caused a minor flap back in February, when during a red-flag stoppage at the Daytona 500, the 28year-old Michigander Tweeted from his car a photo of an on-track fire caused by Juan Pablo Montoya’s collision with a jet dryer. That’s just one example of the fan-friendly approach Keselowski takes to his public profile, which has been raised considerably over the past two months with his performance in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. At this writing, the driver of Penske Racing’s No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger was neck and neck with five-time champion Jimmie Johnson for the lead in the Cup standings, where he’d been since his victory at Chicagoland in the Chase opener. His stats this season – a series-leading (with Denny Hamlin) five wins, to go with 12 top-fives and 21 top-10s – suggest he’ll be tough right until the end. And that comes this Sunday, Nov. 18, at Florida’s Homestead-Miami Speedway, when he’ll vie for the 2012 points title with Johnson, Hamlin, Kasey Kahne and others in the season-closing Ford EcoBoost 400, a race airing on ESPN.

AMAs mark

a milestone

The rule in entertainment has always been that the show must go on, no matter what. And so the 40th American Music Awards will be live on ABC Sunday, Nov. 18, despite the death of the man who created the show. This will be the first AMAs since Dick Clark’s death in April, and Stevie Wonder, who worked with Clark back when he was still known as “Little Stevie,” will perform a tribute. The lineup for one of music’s biggest nights is huge and runs across all pop music genres. The public votes for the winners, and some of the stars, such as Usher, Ke$ha, Carly Rae Jepsen and Linkin Park’s lead singer tell Zap2it why this live awards show means so much to them. “It is the one awards that has no politics,” Usher says. “The AMA is by far the most critical. The fans determine whether we win or lose.” As of this writing, Usher was still considering just what he would perform at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. “There are many directions it can go, given that my career that has gone so long,” he says. “I can recognize just current success or future tours and videos. I could also go on something classic.” Jepsen, who had the ubiquitous hit “Call Me Maybe,” knows what she will be singing and what she’ll be wearing. She’s planning a medley of “Call Me Maybe” and her new single, “This Kiss.” This will be Jepsen’s first time at the AMAs, and she is giddy over the prospect. “It is one of those things you dream you will do,” she says. “As a woman you always hope to walk that red carpet.” “It is so funny I usually never know” what outfit to wear, she says. “Three or four months ago I tried on this dress and fell in love with it and have been saving it. And I’m going to be able to arrive at the AMAs (in it). I knew why I was saving it. It’s really sparkly. I can’t tell what color, it’s a soft purple green and pink, the perfect little mermaid dress. My mom actually makes jewelry, and she has already made me matching earrings to go along with it.”

Brown also emphasizes that, unlike many other competitive reality shows, “Iron Chef” prefers to keep the dramatic heat in the kitchen. “One of the things that we’re always really conscious of on the ‘Next Iron Chef’ franchise,” he says, “is there’s never any backstabbing, bickering, personality battles going on. We tend to only want to get people to respect one another and treat each other respectfully. “We think that the tension and drama should come from the challenges, not from some kind of faux interpersonal issues. We don’t traffic in that. We don’t like that kind of thing. It’s beneath the audience and also beneath the competitors. “We try to keep things a little more honorable and make it about the food and what these people are capable of doing.” After all, fans aren’t tuning in to see people argue with one another in a mansion; they want to see cooking at a very high level. “It’s really remarkable,” Brown says, “if you’re a culinary fan, if you’re a foodie, to see the things that are done, the way the creative minds work, the way creative minds work under pressure, because that’s when you see the real skill come out.” And while there’s plenty of honor and accolades for the ultimate winner of “The Next Iron Chef: Redemption,” Brown emphasizes that these folks are already stars in their own world. “These people are already in a club,” he says, “because they’re in that upper-echelon chef club, which is most assuredly a club. They all know each other. They respect each other.”

Brown gives second chances in ‘Next Iron Chef: Redemption’ Earlier this month, Food Network premiered the fifth iteration of one of its most successful franchises, “The Next Iron Chef: Redemption.” The eight-episode series (the finals air on Sunday, Dec. 23), with host Alton Brown (“Good Eats”), features a roster of acclaimed culinary masters vying for a second chance to join the exclusive “Iron Chef ” club. Along with veterans of the competition, the show added a few newcomers, along with a 10th cast member decided in Web-exclusive battles at FoodNetwork.com. Asked about this fresh twist on the concept, Brown – calling in between flights from the cockpit of his private plane – says, “You always have to look at the story arc. It’s a good story. It’s not just a matter of piling another bunch of people to fight with one another. “We look at the people who had come very, very close in the past, then, for some reason, didn’t make it. We thought, ‘Wow, it would be great to give these people a second chance.’ A couple of them, not having even been on ‘Iron Chef,’ having been on other chef-centric competition shows – and we thought, ‘We’ll put them all together and let them see if they can redeem themselves.’ “And it comes to an interesting conclusion.”

“THE BEACH BOYS 50: LIVE IN CONCERT”

Many accounts of the late Beatle’s life have been told, including the excellent drama “Nowhere Boy,” and this unauthorized biography gives additional viewers of the singer-songwriter who would become an icon before tragedy cut his life short in 1980. Members of his earlier group, the Quarrymen, are among those who comment. So does Allan Williams, the first manager the Beatles had. As might be expected, though, the most telling comments are by Lennon himself in the included clips of him. ››› (Not rated: P)

This recent performance, recorded in Phoenix, is a good way to catch the seminal pop music group as it’s long been known, since headlines later were made with the announcement that veteran members Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks were leaving the band. Whether they were fired is up for debate, but at least this provides an opportunity to hear many familiar Beach Boys tunes from those you’d expect to perform them. This

Spike Lee marks 25 years of Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ on ABC

Call it one entertainment icon’s tribute to another. When Michael Jackson’s classic release “Bad” debuted in 1987, Spike Lee’s filmmaking career was just starting to take hold. The director pays tribute to the fifth-bestselling album of all time – which yielded such singles as the title cut, “Man in the Mirror,” “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Smooth Criminal” – in the documentary “Bad 25,” which ABC gives a Thanksgiving night TV premiere Thursday, Nov. 22. Lee interviews such other Jackson collaborators as fellow moviemakers Martin Scorsese and Joe Pytka in creating a remembrance of how “Bad” came to be, utilizing archival footage that also recalls the global concert tour Jackson launched in support of it. Lee recently took a break from his New Orleans filming of “Oldboy” (starring Samuel L. Jackson) to speak with this writer about the making of “Bad 25” and his personal ties to Jackson. Q: How long had it been in your mind that “Bad” was coming up on its 25th anniversary? A: The original plan was to do (a commemorative documentary on Jackson’s album) “Thriller,” but the

Jackson estate said, “Let’s wait on that, and let’s do this.” It was in conjunction with Sony, a whole big plan to remaster and rerelease the album. Q: Did your personal connection to Michael Jackson make the making of “Bad 25” either easier or harder for you? A: It makes it easier as a filmmaker. I know the subject matter, and I know all the music. I was born in 1957, Michael was born in 1958, and Prince also was born in 1958. Who knew we’d all grow up together? I was in Brooklyn, Michael was in Gary (Ind.), and Prince was in Minnesota ... and it’s amazing I got to work with them. And with Stevie Wonder, too. Q: When “Bad” initially was released, your filmmaking career was just starting to take hold. Is there a significant connection between the two for you? A: Yeah. I was working on my second film, “School Daze”; “She’s Gotta Have It” had come out in 1986, but I’d been a Michael Jackson fan since I saw him on “The Ed Sullivan Show” with the Jackson 5. That was a long, long time ago.
