If versatility translates to job security in today’s uncertain employment market, then Randall Cobb’s place in the NFL should be secure for years to come.

Luckily for the Green Bay Packers, it’s at Lambeau Field that the second-year man plies his trade as a wide receiver, kick returner, punt returner and most recently, a possible thirddown back, in a role that keeps expanding as his playmaking abilities keep opening eyes.

Drafted in the second round (64th overall) in 2011 out of Kentucky, the speedy 22-year-old Tennesseean starred as a kick returner as a rookie, scoring two touchdowns while ranking second in the NFL in return average (27.7 yards). As a fifth receiver in a talented Packer corps, he also made his presence known, catching 25 passes for 375 yards and a touchdown.

His stellar play continued into the 2012 season in the Week 1 loss to the 49ers, when he caught nine passes for 77 yards while returning a punt 75 yards for a score. He also lined up in the backfield on 19 plays in Green Bay’s no-huddle package, though he did not record a single carry.

Wide receiver, returner, running back – an allaround Renaissance man, this Cobb is. Did we mention he also played quarterback for a year in college?

Cobb and the Packers face the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Sept. 30, in a regional game airing on Fox.

It’s probably not a coincidence that “666 Park Avenue,” a new suspense drama premiering Sunday, Sept. 30, on ABC, opens in a glittering New York concert hall where an elegantly dressed audience listens to a classical performance. The orchestra’s concertmaster is in the middle of negotiating a tricky violin passage when suddenly the strings of his instrument begin cutting into his fingers, as if dipped in acid. Gritting his teeth in pain and mounting terror, the musician manages to get through the passage as drops of blood fly onto the music pages. In the audience, Gavin Doran (Terry O’Quinn, “Lost”) and his beautiful wife, Olivia (Vanessa Williams, “Desperate Housewives”), smile enigmatically.

of its own. The show doesn’t stint on occasional jolts of horror, but “666 Park Avenue” is more interested in inducing a sense of mounting dread, much like “Rosemary’s Baby,” another horror classic set in an eerie old New York apartment building.

Gavin, a real estate entrepreneur, owns the Drake, where he and Olivia seduce at least some of the residents into entering into infernal bargains to achieve their hearts’ desires. Of course, eventually payment comes due, usually in the form of the person’s life and/or soul.

That’s why, as the series opens, there’s an opening for a new building manager (the previous one, we are told, recently “moved to a warmer climate”). Enter young couple Jane Van Veen and Henry Martin (Rachael Taylor, Dave Annable), who jump at the chance to live and work in the opulent world of the Drake. What they

don’t know is that Gavin and Olivia already are plotting a way to get their hooks into them.

O’Quinn, who won an Emmy for his work on “Lost,” admits he isn’t a fan of horror himself, but he thinks the stylish chills of this new series may click with viewers.

“I think it feels like a bit of throwback, and the more we shoot, the more it feels that way,” he says. “It’s getting better every week, I must say. I think that sense (of evoking classic horror of the past) is intentional, and they’re doing a really good job of it.

“I’ve never especially liked being scared or unsettled.

To be honest, my favorite things are probably romantic comedies or other light stuff. The occult or supernatural never really appealed to me, but that being said, it’s fun to play. But the more possible (horror) is made to seem, the less I want to watch it.”

•What are you currently reading? “ ‘Canada’ by Richard Ford. It’s a wonderful book. I’m also reading – I read a lot – ‘Bring Up the Bodies’ by Hilary Mantel.”

•What did you have for dinner last night?

“I had a wonderful dinner at Sushi Yasuda, a little authentic Tokyo sushi bar in (New York) – it’s one of my top four Japanese restaurants.”

•What is your next project?

“I’m working on a store concept right now, but I can’t tell you what it is.”

•When was the last vacation you took – where and why?

“Well, I tried to take a vacation at my house in Maine on Mount Desert Island. It wasn’t much of a vacation, but it was fun. My daughter (Alexis) came with her two babies and some friends. It was supposed to be a real hiking, boating, tennis, biking vacation, but my daughter broke her foot the week before … so I played a lot with the babies.”

Well, folks, we’ve got no more excuses. The queen of culinary perfection, Martha Stewart, is set to teach us how to cook like real chefs, starting with the basics and working our way up, with her new show, “Martha Stewart’s Cooking School,” premiering Saturday, Oct. 6, on PBS (check local listings).

“I love to teach, and PBS came to me looking for a real cooking show, one that would inspire experienced cooks – and new cooks – to get in the kitchen and really try these things,” Stewart says. “We made 26 half-hour shows based loosely on my book ‘Martha Stewart’s Cooking School.’

It divides the methods of cooking into categories so there is a show devoted to how to poach, how to steam, how to roast, how to pan saute. Of course, they’ll be a refresher course for some, but a really great teaching course for others who want to learn.”

The show focuses on the techniques necessary to give viewers a rock-solid foundation for recipes that everyone will come across at one point or another. She starts off slowly (this week she helps

us cook the perfect egg, whether it be soft- or hard-cooked or a fluffy scramble; next week it’s on to sauces, then vegetables) before tackling some other items that might seem daunting to the uninitiated (braising, butchering), but after watching Stewart, seem totally doable.

“These are the techniques – the secrets – that you would learn if you went to a very expensive cooking school,” Stewart says. “I think we have forgotten that there is a lot more to what we can eat than what we eat ... people are so attuned to opening a box or a can.

“It takes no time at all to put a nice piece of fish in a steamer with some vegetables and have a really good meal,” Stewart says. “That’s what I want people to know – that it’s not so hard, and it’s not so complicated. ... If you know the techniques and the tricks you can be a really good cook.

“Julia (Child) led the way, and she was such a good teacher – and I think I’m a good teacher, and PBS thinks I’m a good teacher, and I think I can carry on where Julia left off.”

He tries to keep his shadier activities secret from his wife (Olga Kurylenko, “Quantum of Solace”) and children, but that becomes increasingly tougher to do. “Who knew people like to sit down on a Sunday night and feel anxious and sweaty?” asks Damian Lewis.

Lewis plays Nicholas Brody on Showtime’s critically acclaimed “Homeland,” which returns for its second season Sunday, Sept. 30, just as taut and fraught with terrifying prospects as before.

Brody, who was a POW Marine, became a Muslim in captivity. Last season, he struggled with the age-old questions of good versus evil. Is he an American hero or a ticking time bomb? Will he be a congressman or a terrorist?

Will he be both? And what does homeland mean to him?

“Brody’s mission statement at the end of Season 1 is, ‘I want to use nonviolence.’ There is an earthly, corporal love for his daughter,” Lewis says. “Her voice pierces through the mist. “What Brody will discover is he is a man not in charge of his own destiny,” Lewis continues.

His foil is Carrie Mathison, a bipolar CIA agent, and Claire Danes has been racking up awards for her portrayal

of this brilliant and tortured woman. At the cliffhanger ending of the freshman season, Carrie suffered a psychotic breakdown and ranted about what she had figured out.

“In this season she is more balanced emotionally,” Danes says. “It is a little less taxing than last year. Her nerves were starting to unravel. The nice thing about Carrie is she is ultimately right and ultimately victorious. She is not always recognized for being that in an overt way, but she is successful in the way that really matters, so that kind of saves me and saves my spirit as I render her.”

When this season opens, Brody is already a congressman with the vice presidency dangled before him. Yet Abu Nazir, mastermind of the terrorist plot, continues to try to manipulate Brody.

“It is a story about fear, heroes versus nonheroes, and how fine the line is between the two,” says Morena Baccarin, who plays Brody’s wife, Jessica. “Whether homeland security or the home.”

“I would love to see it go on indefinitely,” she says, but adds, “I think it’s a story that has an end, if you don’t want to lose people.”
