Shhh. There is a man in the nation’s third-largest media market who is quietly assembling numbers befitting a Hall of Famer, yet few outside his team’s home city seem to notice.

He’s Paul Konerko, the underrated first baseman for the Chicago White Sox who once again is putting up stellar numbers while leading his team to an almost certain postseason berth.

As of late August, the 36-year-old native of Providence, R.I., was hitting .312 (fifth in the American League) with 21 home runs, 60 RBIs, and on-base and slugging percentages of .384 and .502. His OPS (a measure of overall offensive efficiency) of .886 was eighth in the AL and topped those of more celebrated sluggers Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez and Mark Teixeira. And his career stats – .284, 417, 1,321, .360 and .500 – should certainly be worthy of Hall consideration, especially if Konerko can put in another three or four solid seasons.

So why does he regularly escape notice? It might be because he does so many things so well – hits for average and power, fields his position well, is a solid teammate – that no one characteristic stands out. It might also be because of the position he plays, where Pujols, Prince Fielder, Joey Votto and other sluggers ring up the gaudy numbers and get the All-Star votes.

Whatever the reason, Konerko is the heart and soul of the White Sox and the fact his teammates voted him team captain means the most important people have noticed.

At first glance, “Vegas” – the heavily hyped CBS drama premiering Tuesday, Sept.

25 – looks like a throwback to a TV drama from several decades ago. It stars Dennis Quaid in his network series debut as Ralph Lamb, a local cattle rancher pressed into service by the Las Vegas mayor (Michael O’Neill) when the town’s sheriff goes MIA under mysterious circumstances.

The time is 1960, and Vegas is in an awkward transition from the bump-in-theroad casino town familiar from Warren Beatty’s “Bugsy” into the glitz magnet that it would become. Certainly a financial boom is in the offing, however, and that has caught the attention of the Chicago mob, which has dispatched Vincent Savino (Michael Chiklis playing a composite character) to look after its interests – which, from all appearances, are in direct conflict with the values and interests of Lamb and his fellow locals.

“Basically, ‘Vegas’ is about cowboys vs. gangsters,” Quaid explains, laughing.

Except that’s just the beginning of things.

Co-created by Nicholas Pileggi (“Goodfellas”) and Greg Walker (“Without a Trace”), “Vegas” starts out like an archetypal battle of good (morally upright Lamb) and evil (corrupt mob guy Savino), but watch for things to start moving from blackand-white into shades of gray as the story unfolds, Quaid says.

“I’m not interested in playing just a traditional hero,” Quaid says flatly, “although he starts out that way. I would sort of put (Ralph Lamb) in the category of a character from Sam Peckinpah’s ‘The Wild Bunch,’ where you felt that at one time this person had a moral center and knew who he was – and how that Western world was defined at that time – then along came automobiles and suddenly these men felt as if they were out of place. That’s what happened to Las Vegas, too.”

A fourth-generation Mormon whose family roots in the area went back to the 19th-century Indian wars, the real-life Ralph Lamb, like his friends and neighbors, felt understandably threatened by the influx of crime figures into Las Vegas, Quaid adds.

“There was always vice on some level, with gambling, and prostitution was legal, but then the mob came in and the local people really started feeling as if they were having their town taken away from them,” the actor says. “When Ralph Lamb became sheriff, he was fighting to preserve that or at least keep it from completely taking over, trying to preserve the rule of law and keep the community together.”

‘Sandwich King’ Jeff Mauro’s new challenge: ‘$24 In 24’

Years ago, Rachael Ray famously showed audiences how they could eat delicious food every meal for just $40 a day. Not to be outdone, Jeff Mauro has upped (or downed) the ante, betting he can do the same with just $24. “$24 in 24,” premiering Monday, Sept. 24, is the “Sandwich King” star’s latest Food Network venture, taking him across the U.S. to dine for a whole day on local goodies for just $24, including tax and tip for three meals and a snack.

And Mauro has a certain standard in mind, too.

We’re not talking four trips to White Castle.

“It can’t just be a turkey sandwich,” he says. “You can get that anywhere. Or two hot dogs. Instead of going to a pizzeria for a slice of pepperoni pizza, we go for a plate of three meatballs and a huge freshly made arancini smothered in homemade sauce that you can get for $6. It’s just got to be good food.”

Not only that, the people making him the food have to be interesting. Mauro profiles the proprietors of every joint he visits, hops in the kitchen for a demo of some of their dishes and occasionally even helps serve customers.

Stops include New York, Cleveland, Boston, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Chicago.

Beyond highlighting some tasty treasures, Mauro says the appeal to viewers will lie in seeing if he can pull off his ambitious quest for thrifty foodstuffs.

“It’s almost like a game show,” he says. “‘Can he do it? Will he do it? How much is he going to have left?’ I’ve spent in some cities $23.98. That’s the fun, is getting there.”

I haven’t watched that yet. Actually, that’s about it.”

“I am reading ‘The Art of Fielding’ by Chad Harbach. A baseball book. It’s good, but it’s going slow.”

•What did you have for dinner last night?

“We made a meatloaf on Tuesday, and we had the leftover meatloaf last night, believe it or not, as a sandwich. I cut it and then I sear both sides in the pan, instead of microwaving it or just throwing it in the oven.

Then I had some ciabatta rolls, some cheddar, I crisped up some onions. I had half an onion in the fridge ... and some pickled jalapenos. And a wet salad, and some roasted potatoes. It was a good dinner. I have a picture of it on my Twitter, if you don’t believe me.”

•What is your next project?

“Hopefully another round of ‘Sandwich King.’ If that’s the case, it takes a month or two of planning to get that show going with recipes and themes and sandwiches.

I’m actually knee deep in the beginning stages of a book.”

•Where did you go on your last vacation and why?

“I went to Mexico, Puerto Morelos. It’s outside Cancun.

I went there because I love Mexico, I love the food and I love the drinks. We went to an all-inclusive family resort, which I’ve never really done. I’ve spent so much time cooking and thinking of food and planning my life around food, that I didn’t want to worry about planning out there. I wanted food brought to me.”

Fox’s charming ‘Ben and Kate’ delivers humor, heart

One of the fall’s most delightful new comedies, Fox’s “Ben and Kate,” which premieres Tuesday, Sept.

25, revolves around a pair of oddcouple siblings (Nat Faxon, Dakota Johnson) joined at the hip following a childhood that clearly was no bed of roses.

Forced by aloof parents to more or less parent each other, Ben and Kate Fox have spent their recent years living in different California cities. At the moment, Kate is working as a bar manager to support Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones), her precocious daughter, whose unplanned arrival five years ago forced Kate to drop out of college just shy of graduation and put her life on hold, acting responsibly and following the rules, just as she has all her life.

That structured world gets turned upside down in the series premiere with the arrival of irrepressible big brother Ben, who needs to crash on her couch for a few days while he prevents a woman he loves from marrying another man, but it’s not long before he starts to notice danger signals when it comes to kid sister’s latest beau (guest star Jon Foster).

The cast also includes the alwayseffervescent British comedy star Lucy Punch as BJ, Kate’s British best friend who is always ready to provide dubious romantic advice and even shadier babysitting services, and Echo Kellum as Tommy, Ben’s frequent partner in a long-running series of pranks and nutty schemes. Make no mistake, however, it’s the warm, unforced chemistry between Faxon

and Johnson that powers this engaging family comedy.

If it all feels authentic, it should.

Series creator and executive producer Dana Fox based the central relationship in large part on her own real-life connection to her older brother, Ben Fox. “I’ve gotten to know the real Ben Fox and spend time with him, and certainly I think the character was based much more on his earlier years than now,” explains Faxon. “He’s this really successful guy now, but you can sense his energy, which is very infectious, and you can sense his willingness to take risks. When you spend time with him, you feel like you could get into a lot of trouble, although you don’t have to worry about it. You just have to take the jump. And that’s fun.”

Upon discovering the plan of a tycoon (Bill Nighy, in a live-action role) to control the world via appliances, the animals set out to stop the scheme. The voice cast includes Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz and Steve Buscemi.

How do you describe your over-the-top character in “Partners,” premiering Monday, Sept. 24?

A:

Louis will make rash decisions. He is very emotional, very selfinvolved. He always makes choices and decisions out of the heart. He is loosely based off Max Mutchnick (the series’ co-creator).

Q:

Do you watch the interactions between Mutchnick and his lifelong pal and co-creator, David Kohan, to inform the character?

A:

It’s like they are an act. They are not putting anything on. There is so much fun to be had by them. The fact that we are working on something loosely based on them, they have got their own shtick.

Q:

It’s the crowded time of year for network shows, so how do you describe yours to make it stand out?

A:

It’s going to be a nice adult show, but not racy. In the same vein as, and between ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘2 Broke Girls,’ and also have a youthful sensibility as scintillating and sultry and sinister as gay porn – but without the porn.

Q:

Though you have done theater and film, you’re best known as Marc St. James on “Ugly Betty,” another hilarious and outrageous gay character. Are you worried about being typecast?

A:

You have to get typecast before you can get cast. He is the funny gay guy. I definitely was aware of it early on and I wonder if it will be a stigma for me. Since “Ugly Betty,” I have done so much theater. If I keep getting these hilarious fun parts on TV, I will be a happy actor.

By Kate O’Hare Zap2it Ever since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s consulting detective Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in 1887, speculation has swirled about the relationship between Holmes and his friend and biographer, Dr. John Watson.

While Doyle was clear that the two men were simply good friends — and, indeed, Holmes seemed to have no sexual interest in anybody, and Watson wed his beloved Mary — that hasn’t stopped the innuendo.

Especially in the 21st century, where sex has saturated almost every square inch of popular culture, the notion that two reasonably attractive single adults of whatever gender could have a close friendship without romantic overtones seems almost quaint — at least in today’s fiction.

When CBS premieres its contemporary take on the classic tale on Thursday, Sept. 27, fans of Holmes and Watson will have an entirely new wrinkle in the relationship to tickle their imaginations.

“Elementary” stars British actor Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes, a Londoner whose drug-fueled fall from grace sent him to rehab and then to Manhattan, where he consults on crimes for the NYPD. Fearing a relapse, his wealthy father is forcing him to accept the presence of a sober companion, someone whose job it is to keep the newly drug-free

appreciates Sherlock’s skill and allows him to help.

So, now, we not only have a bosom companion for Holmes, but also a companion who actually has bosoms.

As to whether a man and a woman can be just friends, Miller says, “Yes, they can. It’s certainly possible. They know it

“(That is) absolutely right,” says executive producer Rob Doherty.

“As far as launching the show, absolutely, it’s as unprofessional as you can get, completely wrong and a fireable offense.”

But Doherty doesn’t insist that this initial dynamic will forever dominate the Holmes/Watson relationship.

“Looking ahead,” says Doherty, “and I’m speaking to a hazy notion of what the future might hold, her presence as a sober companion, at least that responsibility, will fade a little bit over time. If we were lucky enough to get into Season 4, 5, 6, I doubt that’s what she’s there strictly to be.”
