The past year has certainly been good to Victor Cruz.

At about this time a year ago, Victor Cruz was an undrafted free agent out of the University of Massachusetts trying to stick with the New York Giants as a practice squad wide receiver. Fast-forward to the beginning of the 2012 campaign, and he’s a Super Bowl champion with a breakout season, several franchise records and a book on his resume.

His rise on the New York depth chart came quite swiftly after the team lost Steve Smith to free agency before the 2011 season. After landing the fourth receiver slot out of training camp, the 25-year-old New Jersey native got his chance after injuries sidelined Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon in Week 2, catching three Eli Manning passes for 110 yards and his first two career touchdowns in a 29-16 victory over the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. He would go on to record six more tripledigit-yardage games that year and one more in the playoffs in becoming the permanent starter.

For 2011, Cruz wound up with 82 receptions for a team record 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns, playing an integral role in the 9-7 Giants’ unlikely run to the title in Super Bowl XLVI. Cruz and the Giants open defense of their ’11 championship at home against the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, Sept. 5, on NBC.

‘Coma’

sure to keep you awake On a chilly Friday night last January, lights are blazing inside Glenridge Hall, a stunning but secluded mansion in the suburbs of Atlanta. The location frequently is in demand for weddings and parties, but tonight it’s standing in as the home of Dr. Theodore Stark (James Woods), chief of staff at fictional Peachtree Memorial Hospital, in a TV remake of the 1978 medical thriller “Coma.” The two-part movie premieres Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 3 and 4, on A&E Network.

In the glittering party scene being filmed, Oscar winner Geena Davis is playing Dr. Agnetta Lindquist, the chilly head of psychiatry at the hospital, as she meets new medical student Susan Wheeler (Lauren Ambrose, “Six Feet Under”), the heroine of the piece, who sets the drama into motion when she notices that an improbable number of the hospital’s patients are lapsing into comas.

•What are the musthaves in your pantry?

“Garlic, definitely. I love garlic, because it’s versatile, and it adds a lot of flavor to almost anything you’re cooking.

Probably onions, too, along the same lines. Also, fish sauce. I use it a lot in the kinds of dishes I cook. And of course, kosher salt. I definitely need that in my kitchen.”

•Any recent additions to the fridge staples?

“The one thing I picked up from Becky (Reams), one of my co-contenders, is almond milk.

It’s something she was always buying when we were in L.A. I was in the grocery store and thinking of Becky, because I miss her, and I thought, ‘I’ll pick up some almond milk.’ Now I’m obsessed. I finished a half-gallon in five days.”

When her scene wraps, Davis gapes at her surroundings before joining her interviewer in a small kitchen area down a warren of corridors from the grand room where filming continues.

She cheerfully anticipates the first question about why she’s playing a supporting role in a TV movie and explains it’s partly because Ridley Scott, who directed her to an Oscar nomination in “Thelma & Louise,” is among the “Coma” executive producers.

“This year is the 20th anniversary of ‘Thelma & Louise,’ and I hadn’t gotten to do anything with Ridley since then, so I decided to check it out, and after I read the screenplay, I decided it was pretty cool,” she says. “Actually, I’ve never played a character quite like this one.

She especially thinks that ethics and morals actually are on her side, that the end justifies the means. She’s pretty sure she’s on the right side of this issue, which is more interesting than a character who knows she is doing something she shouldn’t be.”

While this new “Coma,” which also stars Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss, Steven Pasquale (“Rescue Me”) and Ellen Burstyn, is premiering at a time when health care is a hot-button topic in the news, this TV movie generally skirts around making any social or political statement in that regard.

“MasterChef” contender Christine Ha – back home in Texas after the completion of filming in Los Angeles – might not be cooking at home tonight.

“I don’t have anything in mind,” she says.

“I might go out to dinner tonight. We’ll see.

It’s Friday night, so might go grab dinner with friends and my husband. I don’t have anything marinating in the fridge. If there is something that I want to cook, it’s going to be last minute.”

The Fox reality show has its season finale on Tuesday, Sept. 4, and Ha looks good to be among the final contenders in the competition that pits amateur cooks against one another, with culinary experts Gordon Ramsay, Graham Ellliot and Joe Bastianich as judges.

The modest Vietnamese-American, an M.F.A. candidate for fiction in the University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program – she’s tried her hand at fiction but is currently more interested in penning a memoir – became legally blind as a result of an autoimmune condition. But that hasn’t stopped her from finding her way around the “MasterChef” kitchen and turning out

delectable, beautifully presented dishes for the judges.

Ha has even gotten the confidence to become a bit of an amateur food critic.

“Last week,” she says, “I went out to eat at a pretty nice restaurant. The serving staff recognized me, and they actually came to ask me my honest opinion of my dish. I said, ‘All right, you really want to know the truth? I think some parts are bland … .’ I’m telling them how to make their own food.

“It’s funny, before I would be like, ‘It’s fine.’ I would think those things in my head, but I wouldn’t necessarily voice it. But now, I think I trust my palate more, and I would definitely voice it.”

Doing “MasterChef” has introduced Ha to a wide variety of ingredients that she may not have known about – or been able to afford – before. But like anyone else, she has her comfort food.

“Probably a lot of Vietnamese noodle soups,” she says. “or fried chicken or pizza, the things I really enjoyed eating growing up. All those things bring a lot of emotions when I eat them.”

Clearly Walt’s — or should we just say “Heisenberg’s”? — journey to the dark side is only getting more and more horrific, so there’s no telling what you should brace yourself for as this summer’s eight-episode miniseason wraps up with “Gliding Over All.” No wonder Skyler (Anna Gunn) is scared to death.

It’s a beautiful new day in the ‘Neighborhood’ on PBS

For Mrs. Rogers to sign off on a new show, it must promote her late husband’s values. And the youngest of viewers, in this case 2- to-4-yearolds, must be entertained.

The new PBS show “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” debuts Monday, Sept. 3 (check local listings). It’s a sweet, not treacly animated show featuring two related 11-minute episodes and a live-action short film. Each weekday episode gently delivers moral lessons. Voodoo Highway supplies songs with the necessary catchiness.

It’s a fair bet that the parents of the target audience grew up on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” and they will recognize the characters’ heritage.

Daniel Tiger is the son of the original show’s Daniel Striped Tiger.

His best friend is O the Owl, who lives with his Uncle X in a tree. He’s also pals with Katerina Kittycat, daughter of the original show’s Henrietta Pussycat, and Prince Wednesday, the youngest member of the neighborhood’s royal family.

“There was no doubt in my mind that the need was there,” Joanne Byrd Rogers says. “They missed Mister Rogers’ values.”

After being married to Fred Rogers for more than 50 years, she describes those values as “honesty, truth, loyalty and doing the best you can.”

“I do think Fred tried to present that without being too religious about it,” she says.

The new show was years in the making. Executive producers

Kevin Morrison of The Fred Rogers Company and Angela C. Santomero, creator of “Super Why!” and “Blue’s Clues,” were ideal choices to bring this to life, she says.

“They all speak Freddish, as we say,” Rogers says.

Mister Rogers was the first TV educator to break that fourth wall and talk directly to his young audience, Santomero says. A die-hard “Mister Rogers” fan, Santomero styles her shows in the same vein of kindness, stressing cooperation and respect.

“The vision was to promote Fred’s legacy and promote the themes and curriculum to kids today,” Santomero says of the new show. “I hope I can touch one child the way he did me.”

ON NBC Did your son, Army Sgt. Track Palin (who deployed to Afghanistan earlier this year) or your wife, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, influence you to participate in a show that pairs celebrities with military operatives and first responders on simulated missions?

A: No. 1 would be the cause, the military charity. Track was major, Sarah was major, and then my working experience on “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” knowing (producer) Mark Burnett puts out a great product.

Did you bond with your military operative partner?

A: My guy was (former Marine) J.W. Cortes. Our common ground is he has a son with autism, and I’ve got a son with Down syndrome. Just being a father, you have a bond. With the additional challenge, there’s that extra bond. I’m a little older than he is, and I’m like, “We are blessed. There’s a reason why God put this child in our hands, in our family.”

How is your son, 4-year-old Trig, doing?

A: He’s doing good. When we were filming, he said his first words. He told his older brother to quit picking on him, or something like that. And when J.W. went back to New York on one of the dark days, he said his name, so that was pretty exciting.

Did you get hurt?

A: Our minds think we’re 20, but our bodies remind us that we’re not.

What was your charity?

A: Armed Services YMCA Alaska. They make military family lives better. They’ve been up there in Alaska for 70 years.

Have you and Anna Gunn ever worked out a back story to explain the relationship between Skyler and Marie?

A: Anna and I have joked about the fact that clearly there are issues with their parents, and we’ve always wanted to meet them. I don’t know if that will ever happen, but we assume that their parents were just kind of crazy, nutso people, which is part of the reason why Marie and Skyler are always there for each other, because that’s usually what happens when the parents are a mess. The kids become the grownups and siblings are like war buddies.

Q:

How closely do you relate to Marie?

A: Whenever anyone brings up the episode where Hank was shot, it physically affects me. When I watched it at home with my husband when it aired, I knew that Hank was going to survive, yet it was so hard to watch. My heart races. My blood pressure goes up. It just makes me feel terrible, even more than the really violent scenes, which are also hard for me to watch. I’m so invested in their relationship.

Q:

So you find it hard to leave her on the set?

A: I try not to bring it home. I can’t have anything purple (Marie’s signature color) in my life, in my house.

Marie is just so tightly wound, and she doesn’t release any of that. I do. I’m an actor, and we express things, even things we shouldn’t.

Soap Synopses The Bold and the Beautiful Bill discouraged Liam from trying to reconcile with Hope, while Rick had some ulterior motives when he put Othello in a difficult position with Hope. Once Othello’s plans were back on track, Rick began focusing on Thomas to be his next pawn.

Liam was blindsided by Rick’s swift maneuver to get his sister out of the house. After learning of the busted wedding, Steffy was surprisingly hesitant about making her own move. Hope turned to Thomas for comfort.

Liam found Steffy on the beach, and they shared an emotional reunion. Thomas helped Hope move the rest of her belongings out of Liam’s house, where they had an awkward encounter with Liam and Steffy. Rick let Caroline know he was still very interested in her. Pam and Donna’s rivalry continued at full throttle.

Days of our Lives After being released on bail, Sami had a tense encounter with Rafe.

Nicole told Daniel she would like for them to be more than friends, but he gently refused her. Lucas angrily accused Sami of jerking him around and wanting to keep all the men in her life on a string. Melanie was freaked out at the prospect of Nick getting paroled, despite Julie’s assurance that he had changed.
