Condolences on the death of STEPHEN VOLUFU

I would like to express my deepest condolences on the death of STEPHEN VOLUFU .I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of LINDA STEPHEN VOLUFU.I know how difficult this must be for the community of KwaNokuthula and the Mancherster / Stephen United Teams AND HIS FAMILY . You are in my thoughts and prayers. Stephen as many will know him, he was such a kind, gentle soul. he would do anything to help someone in need. I remember one time we use to collect old computers and he would ask me to re-assemble them so that he can assist the young kids who

played in the Team , Manchester United and Stephen United. He natured lot of talent in KwaNokuthula and that can never be written off and that is what we will remember LINDA for decades and decades to come. I know how much many of us will miss LINDA as i call him, on your strength and the strength of his family. we could use our special talent of scrapbooking to make a lasting memory book of LINDA STEPHEN VOLUFU. As a former player in his team , As friend to the late I know there was a lot he wanted to do in the contribution of football development in our society . it is to those who now in charge of administering football to make sure that the spirit of LINDA STEPHEN VOLUFU continues to encourage the young kids playing the number one sport in the world, and may kids not be found wanting on the street of KwaNokuthula because that is one of the reasons STEPHEN established these teams . The Bible nowhere promises that believers in Jesus Christ will escape suffering, trials and afflictions, on the contrary, we will not only have to deal with these things, but we are told that they will be part of our lives. The good news, however, is that as Christians we have the assurance that, in spite of these adverse circumstances we will not be facing them alone. This is the message God gave to His servant Moses and He gives the same promise to everyone who has placed his /her life into His hands. The promise is repeated a number of times in the Scriptures – I love the way the prophet Isaiah records it: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters – I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. LATEST ON TWINNING...a progress report on a twinning agreement with Mogale City Local Municipality and the Bitou Local Municipality was presented to the Mayoral Committee meeting last Wednesday. In May 2007 a twinning agreement was signed between the Executive Mayors of Bitou and Mogale City Local Municipalities. Immediately after the signing of the agreement Mogale City was introduced into the Plato Project by Bitou's LED Program. The two Municipalities both established twinning committees that have engaged with each other to finalize an implementation plan with the following programs: MCLM Ward Committee model MCLM Office of the Status of Disabled Persons-Supply Chain Management Program-Electricity programmes- Contract Management - Properties Management -Project Management. The past winter months have seen the sheltered waters of Plettenberg Bay being blessed by the annual visit of Southern Right Whales. During last couple of weeks the mating adults have departed these shores for colder waters, leaving behind adult females with their new born calves. The females come to this area to breed every 3 to 5 years, with calves suckling for 4 to 5 months. Numbers of Southern Right Whales have recovered dramatically since 1935, when commercial whaling ended in this area. At that time the worldwide population had plummeted to only 600 individuals. Since then, global numbers have increased to 6500, with

around half of the animals visiting South African waters. Encouragingly the global population has doubled every 13 years. Record Shattered. Again! The OTTER African Trail Run, presented by Hi-Tec, undoubtedly rates as the Holy Grail of off-road running. Saturday saw the five-hour barrier on this race broken only for the second time in history, when winner John Collins rampaged home in a blistering 4hrs 56min. Collins reign as Otter King was, however, short-lived. The OTTER African Trail Run, sponsored by global outdoor apparel manufacturer HI-TEC, was yesterday presented for only the second time within the scenic Garden Route National Park. This unique and exhilarating race, run in a single day along the 5-day Otter Hiking Route, showcases the natural splendour of one of South Africa’s favourite (and newest) national parks. Few people are afforded the privilege of doing -The Otter- in one day, and it is certainly not within everyone's physical ability to do so. Yesterday however saw 160 athletes arrive at Storms River Mouth to do exactly this: run the Otter Trail, and do so within the maximum allowed time of 10 hours. This was to be the second running of -The Otter-, an event made possible only after a historic agreement was signed between organisers Magnetic South and SANparks management. The five-day hiking trail, stretching over a distance of 42km, was last year blitzed by KZN runner Ian-Don Wauchope in 4hrs 59min, making him the first athlete to officially break the mythical five hour barrier. This year, with the event run twice - this past Saturday as well as Monday (as part of the Southern Storm Duathlon) - 300 eager endurance runners were given the opportunity to emulate Wauchope's "impossible feat". All sub-five hours competitors have their names engraved on the "Otter Grail", a trophy especially designed for the event, and out of all the runners, the one most eager to make this a reality was John Collins. As a Knysna and Sedgefield local, he has literally grown up running wild along the Garden Route coastline. The concept of the OTTER African Trail Run was the collective brainchild of brothers John and Mark Collins, and they are also key partners in the successful event organising company, Magnetic South, responsible for staging "The Otter". Together with HI-TEC and Plettenberg Bay Tourism, they forged a partnership with SANparks, thus making the impossible dream of "running a 42km off-road marathon along an unspoilt wilderness coastline" a reality. John's personal impossible dream was to have his name inscribed on

the Otter Grail. In order to achieve this, he had to run a flawless 42km burst, negotiating plunging sea cliffs, loose rocks, cascading waves, sandy beaches, treacherous tree roots, gruelling climbs and at least three river crossings - one of them tidal and with a huge ocean swell building and do so in less than five hours. He did exactly this, in a breathtaking time of 4hrs 56min 43sec, obliterating the existing record and fulfilling a life-long dream. He was chased all the way by Plettenberg local lad Victor Gugushe, who missed the five hour mark by an agonising 12 seconds, and Dominic Simms, who claimed third position. In the ladies category, Jacqueline Haasbroek duelled it out with Katja Sogget, the former claiming victory in the end with a new ladies record time of 5hrs 34min. Now forget all of the above. The second edition of the OTTER African Trail Run took place on Sunday , a couple of days later on Monday September 27th, and literally every record - unfortunately including that of John Collins - was comprehensively smashed. A dog-fight of a run saw last year's winner, Ian-Don Wauchope, slug it out with Knysna doctor Andre Gie. In the end, Gie took it by 9 seconds, charging home across the Floating Bridge literally metres ahead of Wauchope in 4hrs 48min. Jeannie Bomford took to the trail

in her Infinity shoes and delivered an impeccable display of trail running, claiming a clear victory over the other ladies with an untouchable time of 5hrs 17min Sometimes a single day of adventure delivers incredible memories, and today was such a day. An impeccable display from all the runners, nonetheless from those who battled home in a gruelling twelve hours. Overcast conditions, perfect for running, and superb organisation by the Magnetic South crew saw both events unfold flawlessly and without mishap. "A new benchmark has been set for SA trail running", said Mickey Mallet, MD of outdoor apparel manufacturers HI-TEC. "We expect this event to grow immensely, not only amongst local racers, but also within the wider international running community. In my opinion, this rates as the country's most technical trail run, and also its most beautiful"! According to event organiser Mark Collins, the key ethos around the OTTER African Trail Run focuses on environmental preservation. "The only way we can make this event 100% sustainable for competitors, landowners and the outdoor tribe is to be untouchable when it comes to how we treat the environment. It is a sad fact that we leave the trail in a better condition than what we find it in; this year we removed more than 70 plastic dry-bags left behind by hikers who cross at Bloukrans".

A short history of the van Rooyens of Plettenberg Bay

(part 4) 1961 saw the birth of the Republic of South Africa, a Plettenberg Bay municipality with its own Town Council, and the death of Laurie van Rooyen of Robberg. As was the case with many other van Rooyens, his children were no longer farmers. His farm was almost sold in 1969 when offshore drilling indicated that gas associated with fossil oil was found about 60 kilometres offshore. Other van Rooyens who played a role in the Plettenberg Bay community was Sias and Oom Daan Koster. Sias was the municipal foreman for many years and D J van Rooyen (Oom Daan Koster) retired in 1972 after 30 years as churchwarden. During this time Plenttenberg Bay was well known as the playing field for the rich. 1994 saw the birth of the New South Africa and a currency exchange rate favouring overseas investors. As a result the alienation of van Rooyen lands was rapidly accelerated as land was sold to developers. In the year 2000 the municipality aquired the land next to the Kranshoek settlement, for housing, from van Rooyens of Robberg. WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 30 SEPTEMBER 2010

Another form of alienation is threatening the van Rooyens of Robberg. The stone quarry on the farm must be rehabilitated in 2014 according to the existing contract between the land owners and the miners. There is reason to believe that the miners may hide behind new legislation to keep on mining past 2014. The van Rooyen family farm next

to the Robberg is still undivided, as was the tradition for the past 200 years. Andrie van Rooyen is living on the farm, while Laurie van Rooyen (the other owner) is living in Paarl. Other van Rooyens still living on the original van Rooyen lands are Johan van Rooyen of Ouplaas (Piesang River valley) and Boer van Rooyen. The bicentenary of the van Rooyen family heritage in Plettenberg Bay was celebrated on the 24th of September 2010 (Heritage Day) with a braai under the milkwood trees on the Robberg farm. God provided good weather and many family memories were shared and old family ties renewed. About 70 van Rooyen descendants were captured on the family photo, although more people attended the celebration. This concludes the 4 part series, but is not the complete history of the van Rooyens of Plettenberg Bay. by Heidi We, at the Bitou CVC, are just so very grateful for all the support we have received from the public. Thank you to everyone who has made it possible for us to reach our goals. We are slowly making progress in New Horizons and the dogs just look so much happier and healthier. Please continue to help with our Sterilization Campaign. It is vital that we prevent unwanted litters and unnecessary euthenising. I have now set Tuesdays aside to work in Qolweni. A cripple lady asked me to please take her 9 dogs away, as she could no longer take care of them. These residents are living in the most appalling conditions. They live in shacks, have to collect water in buckets, have to share a few public toilets. The only dogs I found to be starving, are the ones without owners. Even the lactating bitches are cared for. Strange! So pleased to report that the Bitou Municipality has appointed a law enforcement officer. There are now fines for abusing or neglecting animals, as well as having inadequate shelter. At last, the law is on the animal’s side. Our 2 court cases, regarding the dog left in water and the dog burnt with boiling water, will now hopefully reach the courts. whether they are ready or not the moment of truth will arrive, as this year is affectionately known as twenty turn some will turn their lives for better and to other it will not be the case and remember what I usually say, not all of us will succeed or we will not make it at the same day some will reach their goals today and some tomorrow. In this game there is this word called FAIL. Too many people are very afraid of it, to them it means the end of the day but it is not the case. Those who fail are only those who attempt and once you fail you will be able to go back to look and analyze your work to identify where you go wrong then improve to your mistake. Remember what ever you do and where ever you go it will always be difficult without education as it is a key to success, you can have everything even millions of rands can go varnish but your education qualification will last your lifetime. By those words let me wish a very good luck to all the 2010 matriculants especially those who participate in art activity may they take their education very serious as it will be vital to the future of local creative industry. 2010 is the year in which everybody has been looking forward to it, as it is the year in which history had been made in South Africa by hosting the first ever FIFA world cup in African continent. Although the world cup was the greatest with many positives, it was not the case to the students who had to take 6 weeks long break while the whole world was focusing in football. As if that was not enough just after the world cup on their return to schools teachers went AWOL as they participated in a national strike that took about 3 weeks, demanding a wage increase which left the students stranded with no time as the had to catch up for the missed 6 weeks of the soccer world cup. After the strike had been suspended just before the trial exams, student union also started their own strike demanding free marks as they claim that they were not ready for the exams due to the world cup and teachers strike, a move by pupils that had been label by many South Africans as being stupid and immature. Now we are going to the last school term and in few weeks matric students will start their matric exams
