As the Soccer World Cup draws closer, pupils at Greenwood are getting into the spirit of things and are participating in all kinds of contests and activities. The My School Play it Forward promotion is coming to an end, and some lovely weekly prizes, including a class party and soccer "goodies" have been handed out to children in the classes who've earned the most "points" through family members swiping their My School cards. We are getting a dance instructor in soon to teach our learners (and teachers!) the "Diski" dance, and our grade 6's and 7's have been busy working on their flags for the competition being run by Market on Main. The flags will be put up on Saturday and judged on Sunday. I cannot believe how much jumble we have received this past week. Urgently need to open our Charity Shop, but really having difficulty in finding the right location. I was so disappointed on Friday, when 2 items were stolen. Strange thing is, that next week one of the thieves will more than likely ask me to please spay their dog! The Bitou Community Veterinary Clinic is hosting a Movie Premiere on Saturday, at 13h00, at the Plett Movie House. We still have 1 puppy left of the litter I have fostered, as well as 2 beautiful kittens and 1 border collie type pup of about 2 months old. So pleased to say that the terrier got a lovely home. Thank you to all who adopted these little ones. I couldn’t believe that someone wanted a pup so bad, but was not prepared to have it spayed in 5 months time, as she wanted it to have puppies. Needless to say, we never gave her a puppy! Just to inform everyone concerned, we have managed to spay 185 dogs and cats in the past 4 months! We are slowly making a difference. It’s only thanks to you, the public, for all the donations, and of course the Vets, for always accommodating me. While we have funds available, I will continue with this project. Under the banner 'Blue Drop Report 2010' the Department of Water Affairs established the Blue Drop Report card Scoring System Criteria dealing with thevarious aspects of the production of good potable water. Several aspects in the above production were analyzed such as a Water Safety Plan, Process Control and Maintenance Competency, Efficiency of Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Programme, Regular Submission of Drinking Water Compliance with the South African National Standards, Drinking Water Quality Failure Response Management etc.. Teenage pregnancy is one of the problems at S.A. Some of them when they fall pregnant are not working, are still at school. How are you going to support, raise your child while jobless? Especially now youth get pregnant at the early age of 13 yrs, 14 yrs Why? Some of them said it was a mistake! I don’t understand because at school there are subjects that teachers teach human body like biology etc. so that they must know what’s happening, going to happen to their bodies. At a clinic they learn about safe sex. Parents as well play their role by talking with them about pregnancy. Its just they want to experience to them, make it a competition. After she gets pregnant, it becomes her mother’s responsibility. She don’t know how to raise a child! Both of them are not working. How do you feel when you disappoint your parent? Young people its not right to get pregnant while you young, you are both not even working. Stop wanting to experience everything to you. Wait until you are mature enough, you are working, you are ready to have a baby. Don’t do something for a competition. Never sleep with your boyfriend when you don’t know each other’s status. Always use a condom to protect from STD, STI, HIV & AIDS. 2010 Fifa World Cup Legacy 21 days to go to the kick-off the Fifa 2010 World Cup and I would like to know how Plettenberg Bay Football Association will benefit out of this event. We know for a fact that no stadiums will be built in Plett, so what kind of legacy will be left behind for the people who administer football in Plettenberg Bay? Sometimes they also administer rugby and netball competitions on behalf of Bitou Municipality. All Municipalities received money yearly towards the Fifa World Cup projects for the last four years, and clearly some of this money could have been used to build or furnish this association with an office, who are currently sharing the kiosk on the New Horizons sportsground with the South African Police Service. If you look in the change rooms you will see files of Plettenberg Bay Football association. We are having an association in Plettenberg Bay that can compete with regions not only on the admin side, but an association that produces audited financial reports on how they have spent their money, an association that produces Regional, Provincial
and few a National players yearly. Best IFA for two years running in the Eden region. Don’t you think that the Municipality can invest in Plettenberg Bay Football Association. What are the Municipality doing for our youngsters, nothing. Now ask what Plett Football are doing for our youngsters and the boys will tell you. We have competitions every year and we win trophies and medals. We do not break into houses, or use tik or dagga, because we are soccer players that play under Plett Football Association. We are going to school every day and can’t wait for weekends to play football. Our biggest moments was when we played over Easter in a tournament where we won trophies, medals and money and took photos with the mayor Lulama Mvimbi. All of us shook his hand and our parents were there to support us. Mr Derick Philander was asked 5 years ago to get soccer up and going after the association collapsed, and today they have a membership of nearly 2000 members and he and his executive was re-elected for another 4 year term 90% unopposed. As a parent of 3 boys playing football, thanks to the entire Football Association executive for
making Plett soccer the biggest in the region, and even showing SAFA EDEN a thing or two. Please Bitou Municipality do something and help this association with an office, transport and let them continue producing good players and keep our children off the streets. Ongeveer 11 jaar gelede was ek in die Harkerville bosse agtergelaat deur my baas wat my nie meer wou gehad het nie. Gelukkig is ek deur een van die boere gevind. Omdat hulle my nie kon gehou het nie, is ek gestuur na my aanneem-ouers van Vleiland te Wittedrift. Ek het elke dag saam met my aanneempa na Hoërskool Wittedrift gegaan waar hy ʼn onderwyser is. Dit was ʼn wonderlike ervaring want

ek het maats gemaak met die leerlinge wat met my gespeel het. Dit was baie lekker om saam met die seuns sokker te speel maar my gunsteling was om aan toutrek deel te neem. Ek was altyd in die wenspan maar om een of ander rede was ek nooit gekies om aan kompetisies deel te neem nie. Ek het elke oggend die personeel vergadering bygewoon en dus geweet wat daar bespreek is. Hulle het my ook toegelaat om elke klas te besoek. My algemene kennis was dus baie goed gewees. Ek was ook toegelaat om op die personeelfotos te verskyn. Baie dankie Mnr. Bouwer omdat jy my soveel jare in die skool verduur het. Ons twee het ook ʼn lang pad saamgeloop. Fabulous Squad Netball Club Wins!! On 18 April the team went to
Sedgefield to face Equilizers— Swallows and Wildernis United. They won 22-12, 18-17 and 11-7 respectively! 24 April they played at home against Red Square and won 48-12. 1st May Equilizers came to New Horizon from Sedgefield and Fabulous Squad won 48-22 and 8 May saw Wildernis United and Swallows also in New Horizon. We won 18-17 and 12-8 both games and left for Zoar on the weekend of 14-16 May. We participated in the department of Social Development Netbal Tournament and won the tournament convinvincingly!! Letter via the Editor Dear Plett Community. Can you believe this? The Lookout Deck sign at the corner of Sewell and Church Street is continuously vandalized by somebody in the vicinity. How can that someone stoop so low? The Deck has had to overcome so many destructive obstacles over the past few years that it is hard to fathom how somebody belonging to the Plett community can do such a thing. That has occurred on no less than 6 different occasions and each time we have to pay to have the sign repainted. Where is your community spirit? Let us catch you so we can name and shame you. New Credit Card Scam This one is pretty slick since they provided YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want. Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard telephone Credit Card Scam works, you’ll be better prepared to protect yourself. One of our employees was called on Wednesday from ‘VISA’, and I was called on Thursday from MasterCard’. The scam works like this: person calling says, ‘This is (name), and I’m calling from the Security Fraud and Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I’m calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank) did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for R497.99 from a Marketing company based in (town)
When you say ‘No’, the caller continues with, ‘Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from R297 to R497, just under the R500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?’ You say ‘yes’. The caller continues - ‘I will be starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number listed on the back of your card (0800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. ‘Do you need me to read it again?’ Here’s the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works: The caller then says, ‘I need to verify you are in possession of your card.’ He’ll ask you to ‘turn your card over and look for some numbers.’ There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the

card. These are the number you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he’ll say, ‘That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?’ After you say, ‘No,’ the caller then thanks you and states, ‘ Don’t hesitate to call back if you do’, and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of R497.99 was charged to our card. Long story - short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is re-issuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don’t give it to them. Instead, tell them you’ll call VISA or MasterCard directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you’re receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you’ll see charges for purchases you didn’t make, and by then it’s almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report. What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a ‘Jason of MasterCard’ with a word-forward repeat of

Teaching our children the spirit of giving.
Its winter warmth time again so the Jewish Ladies Guild and all the schools, senior, junior, pre-school and crèches in the Plett are got together to collect warm clothing for the less privileged children in the greater Plettenberg Bay community. A letter was sent to the parents asking that each child donate an item of good second hand warm clothing from his or her wardrobe as it is important for children to learn to give and not always be on the receiving end. The handover ceremony took place on Wednesday 12th May and was attended by learners and school representatives and bags and bags of clothing were given to the beneficiaries who were the Plett Aid Foundation and the Masizame Shelter who will distribute the clothing. There is definitely more happiness in giving than receiving and may our less fortunate children in Bitou be warm this winter. The Jewish Ladies Guild would like to say a very special thank you to all the schools and the Children in particular for their willingness to give, as without their participation, this project would not have been possible. Thank you for the great turn out at the Public meeting at Piesang Valley Hall. It is nice to see that there is a lot of people who do really care about the area they live in. We are busy getting the structures in place and will start with neighborhood watches accordingly. There have been more arrests made on the the Lookout Armed Robbery and there is one local suspect and the rest from the Eastern Cape. We ask that now that everything seems to have slowed down again that we still stay vigilant. Thank you for all the calls that we have been receiving we are following up and it is helping the local Police to be more effective. Her raw singing talent was discovered and soon she found herself singing in front of a variety of audiences from Super sterre and schools to the Zola 7 Show in Knysna, 2010 World Cup Soccer event in George and Churches. Being part of the television program, supersterre on SABC 2 has given her the opportunity to further develope stage performance and to be exposed to the right people in the music industry. She has made it to the Top 6 thus far and has earned favor with many, young and old. Marcha, who has a dream to study music after school, is currently a grade 8 learner at Soa Bras High School in Mossel Bay. We are very proud of her and would like to help her pursue her passion. Asijiki Gospel Choir From Bossiesgif is back in Business
Asijiki gospel choir was formed in August 2001, by youth of Bossiesgif with the purpose of reducing crime and change lives of young people in their area. The choir was sponsored by Schoongesigt with R5000 to buy uniform and Erasmus Panel Beaters bought them instruments (keyboard, speakers and amplifier) in 2002. At that time the choir was directed by Ruben Marhayi who was also a choir master. As the name Asijiki means we are not turning back, it gives all its members the responsibility of taking the group to the higher level. The group managed to reduce the rate of crime in Bossiesgif and also helps to rehabilitate some of their members who were involved in crime before they joined the group then music helped them to change for better as it was much supported in Bossiesgif by parents and young people. In 2005 Ruben went to work in George and due to various factors, some members lost interest in the group and that lead to its death till this year when some members called Ruben and sat down with him. From this meeting Asijiki was formed and supported by David Stewart of Bracken Ridge Estate Agent with R3200 that bought a key board. Now the group is back in business with 12 members (8 ladies and 4 men). They are planning to record an album at the end of September but their main challenge is to get a full set of instruments such as drums, guitar etc. Those who are interested to donate, book or fanclub can contact Ruben at 073 302 6411.
