On Monday 7th February 2011 my Sister’s daughter was coming from her friend’s house after doing a school project at 16h30.

She was going home as instructed by her mom to be home by 5 o’clock. On her way home a black CA car stopped next to her, the guy grabbed her into the car and when she fought to get out he hit her over her back and locked the doors and drove off.

Unfortunately he touched her were he shouldn’t have she was afraid and traumatized. He drove to a field and got out locking the doors, but fortunately there was another key with a remote and she pressed buttons on the remote to see if it works on the car and thank God it did. She unlocked the doors and ran for her life.

This Guy didn’t get to do what he wanted but he is still out there. He told her if she said anything to any one he’ll come back for her.

This girl had the courage to talk, how many are there that he has done this to and is keeping quiet too afraid to talk. A police case has been opened and they are still looking for this guy. So please let us stand together and protect our children and send this rubbish to jail where he belongs. She is

Ouers het op vrydag seker gaan inkopies doen want dit was end maand en die opkoms was nie so goed nie maar op Saterdag was dit ouers in getalle.

Vroegoggend het die Maree familie, Katie, Meme en kinders hul Coolerbag gepak en af skooltoe beweeg. Die sportstemming was reg gelê vir die kinders van Kranshoek Primer. Soos gewoonlik warm en plesierig.

Dit was weer lekker om te sien hoe ouers hul kinders aanmoedig om te wen. Kinders soos Devandre Moos en Nathan Hoffman wat ouens uit hul stoele laat opstaan en saam langs die veld afhardloop. Kinders wat weer daai warmte in hul eie harte en die van ouers bring. Ja, Kranshoek het weer soos een man opgetrek en saam die dag, heerlik deurgebring. Maar hoe dan anders as die pappas ook hulle debuut op die veld maak. Veral as jy manne soos Clifton met pers hare en te al op die veld kry. Clifton en sy vriende Heinie en Dawn het nou vir behoorlike vermaak gesorg. Die manne het nie net saam met die pappas gehardloop nie, nee hulle het ook saam met Devandre en Nathan langafstand gedoen. Glo my hulle is nog in goeie kondisie. Dis goed om te sien ons ouers het belange by hul kinders se toekoms. Jy het nie net nodig om die volgende Mnr Media die skoolhoof te wees nie. Nee, jou kind kan die volgende Bruce Fordyce, Elana Meyer of Micheal Johnson wees. Daars baie geld in beroepssport.

Nou ja die skolesport gaan voort by Plett Laer op Vrydag 4 Februarie 2011.

Letter via the Editor Mountain Search and Rescue and NSRI I don’t think that most Plettenberg Bay people are of the efficient and dedicated emergency services that operated out of Plett. Last Friday evening we were enjoying a short walk on Robberg when we heard running feet approaching us down the path.

A fit young man carrying a stretcher passed us to be followed by another man carrying the half of the stretcher. A few minutes later three or four more men ran past us, obviously members of the same team. They were all running hard making very attempt to reach the injured person to stabilize him as soon as possible.

Cape Nature staff found the injured man, Henk at the office who immediately sit the resume in motion. An emergency call had been sent out to NSRI AND Ray Farnham the NSRI station commander referred the call to the mountain search and rescue team with the news that a man had fallen on the far side of Robberg and broken his leg.

Within minutes six or eight men’s responded to the call an went to the assistance of the man in distress. I ‘m sure that the swift response ensure that the man was stabilized as quickly as possible. We watched as the team carried the man in the stretcher over difficult terrain and eventually passed him over to an ambulance crew of paramedics. The mountain rescue were

sweating and very tired. We learnt that NSRI and the Mountain Rescue Team are obliged to keep themselves fit at all times.

After handing the patient over, the rescue team immediately held a debriefing search and rescue team and the ambulance service and paramedics metro ( EMS) and Cape Nature must be highly commended for their dedication to this voluntary service.

A moral to the story is that if you walk on Robberg or any one of our many hiking trails you should always carry a cell phone and if possible tell where and when you are going and what time you expect to return.

ELECTRICITY CONSTRAINTS The events of January 2008, when the country underwent weeks of load shedding, are indelibly etched in our minds. As a country, we do not want to go back to that situation. This task cannot be the responsibility of any one entity. It requires a partnership approach between many stakeholders and must involve every single citizen of this country.

Eskom has informed us over the last year that the country’s electricity system will experience significant strain from 2011 to 2013 as a result of the increasing demand for electricity without a commensurate growth in generating plant over this period.

Eskom’s first generator at the Medupi power station will be commissioned late in 2012, and subsequent generators over the period 2013 onwards. Generators at the Kusile Power Station will come on line progressively from 2014. A significant shortfall in energy is expected until 2013, which could grow to a gap that is equivalent to the annual electricity consumed by a large city such as Cape Town in one year.

This must be addressed if the country’s economic growth and social development goals are to be achieved in the short- to medium-term. Eskom has also indicated that it is important that the decision on the next base load power station after Kusile in 2017/18 be made very soon.

2011 has arrived and we feel it is appropriate to bring to your attention the seriousness of the situation and the need for all of us to take pro-active and appropriate action to ensure that the lights are kept on in the next 2 to 3 years.

There are some immediate challenges and there will be on-going challenges in balancing electricity supply and demand.

The immediate challenges reflect the following shifts that have occurred in the power system risk profile: The uncertainty of the economic growth and hence the demand in the first half of January 2011 as the country returns to work after the festive season.

The unplanned statutory outage of Eskom’s Koeberg unit 1 to repair fuel rods, from 19 December 2010 for a period of up to 40 days, reduces the maintenance window for the existing coal stations.

The heavy rains in the Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng regions have required the activation of Eskom’s contingency plans to minimise disruptions to coal production and logistics to the power stations. Eskom’s coal stockpiles at Power Stations are close to the 42 day target. However challenges still remain due to coal handling and quality issues.

The level of unplanned outages of Eskom’s coal fired stations has been increasing over the last 3 months, reducing the capacity to do necessary maintenance work and reducing the ability to provide pro-active assurance of future plant performance.

The summer season is the traditional power station maintenance season and therefore there is reduced flexibility.

The on-going challenge in the next 2 years is that demand growth is anticipated to outpace supply growth unless there is a slow down in the economy (which is not desirable) or specific demand and supply side interventions are executed.

Eskom’s leadership is monitoring the performance of the power system and its risk profile on a daily basis and is fully focused on keeping the lights on. However they cannot do this alone and need the support of all stakeholders and customers. Our Municipality will work with Eskom and will actively partner with stakeholders and all citizens to get this done.

Some immediate action plans are as follows: - Ensure that there is constant flow of information to all its stakeholder and customers on the state of the power system and the interventions proposed to ensure that the lights are kept on.

- Through NEDLAC, finalise a programme with all stakeholders on what is required to keep the lights on and what is the role of each stakeholder to do this.

- Execute the demand side management programme as agreed nationally and work with stakeholders to investigate mechanisms to accelerate the programme, as well as ensure that the Government target of the roll-out of the - 1 million solar water geysers by 2014 occurs.

- Working with stakeholders, put in place the “safety nets” of an energy conservation scheme focused on the largest customers and a demand response programme focused on the small industrial and commercial customers and the residential customers.

We encourage you to implement the savings the country needs so that the economy can grow and prosper.

ELECTRICITY CONSTRAINTS Due to the capacity constraints on the Eskom’s 132 kV overhead line feeding Plettenberg Bay, capacity increase to Bitou Municipality is not freely available.

Eskom is however engaged in a project where an additional 132 kV overhead line will be constructed.

The Bitou Local Municipality therefore decided that from the 8th of December 2010 All upgrades to consumers in our area of jurisdiction of existing electricity supply will be limited to a maximum of single phase 60 amps.

All new development applications submitted henceforth will be assessed individually with regard to future electricity demand and the availability of the same.

The following is an extensive list of what could be done to save electricity.

Please follow the suggestions made in the document and forward to others who could also benefit. The electricity supply situation is serious and each one of us will have to make a contribution in order to avert total electricity outages.

TIP 1 Reduce the temperature of your geyser to around 55 degrees so that you don't need to add too much cold water when you shower or do the dishes.

TIP 2 Remember to keep the lid on the pot when you cook to conserve heat and energy.

The size of the pot should match the size of the stove plate - this can save you up to 25% on the electricity you use while cooking.

TIP 3 Try to boil only the water you need instead of boiling a full pot or kettle every time.

TIP 4 Insulate your geyser by wrapping newspapers, old blankets or other insulating materials around it and the hot water pipes.

TIP 5 Switch off lights, fans, computers and other energy consuming appliances when you leave the room. It will save you money.

TIP 6

Use the right energy for the right purposes, for example use heaters for space heating rather than hotplates, use an electrical kettle for water heating rather than an ordinary pot on the stove. You will use about 50% less electricity.

Note: Electricity is good for electronic devices but gas is more efficient for heating and cooking.

TIP 7

Save water and electricity by washing your bed linen at 60 degrees instead of 90 degrees, it will still be clean!

TIP 8 Use energy saving light bulbs. They last much longer and use less electricity and this saves you money in the long run.

TIP 9 Reduce your electricity bill by doing all your ironing at the same time.

TIP 10 Share your energy consumption information with your neighbours - discuss your electricity bills!

The Pilates PC 12 plane was inbound from Queenstown to Plettenberg Bay. It went past Robberg and circled back towards the airport, when Radar contact was lost at 16.33pm on Tuesday.

Land parties were up all night and at first light on Wednesday boats went out. The first pieces of wreckage and remains were found at 6am on Wednesday morning, some close and some as far away as 6.5km from Robberg. The boat and helicopter search continues as we go to print….

Letter via the Editor This is an accolade for Plett Police & Plett CID because on Sat morning at 3:15 am, I woke up to see a man standing next to my bed. It didn’t seem real - like a nightmare. He told me not to scream or call out. He came up putting his finger on my mouth saying “ shhuch” no noise, he said he wanted cell phones, money, cameras, laptop. He took 2 cell phones and money, told me to get out of bed and get my wallet grabbing my own snatching up a pair of scissors he said, I’ll #@%! kill you if you make a noise. He made me sit on the bed and he sit next to me swearing. Eventually after looking through jewellery he climbed out my bedroom window. I dashed to a neigbour who called the police They came in minutes and after asking me to describe him, they left to see if they could find him, Imagine how surprised I was when they come back pushing him forward. I spent Saturday at the police station and with the CID They both departs came to my flat spending hours taking statements fingerprints and photo’s. All this time they were so courteous and efficient, telling me not to stress as they will send him away for a long time as he had only been our of jail a month and had other cases against him. What I want to emphasis is how kind and understanding every one at the police station and CID station was. I can’t thank them all enough. Even the police captain came asking me if they had done everything? I said : All your men are amazing. I’ve never known any police to be so considerate and helpful .

A 'momentous occasion' best describes the start of our 'Coming Together Project', as it's been in the pipeline for a long time.

The initial vision statement developed by Bitou at a strategic planning session during May 2003 was captured in the statement of a desired intention 'To be the best together' and harnessing unity in diversity. It was further elaborated as a vision emphasizing development and upliftment of all Bitou citizens.

The initial start to the project has now started with the infrastructure for the development of a regional Magistrates Court complex complete with required parking facilities, public transport provisions etc. A new centralized community library will be built soon afterwards. A initial capital grant of R 60-million has been allocated to the Bitou Municipality together with a technical assistant grant of R 6-milion. Aurecon South Africa are the appointed service provider for the 'Coming Together' project. They have appointed me

Mateki and Thabo new kids on the block

As I usually visit Trouble Makers production aka Tyros at DJ Menzaizo’s bedroom studio every Saturdays and Sundays, this past Saturday I was caught by surprise by the unattended talent of the two young kids from kwanokuthula. Simphiwe Mene aka Mateki and Thabo Maki are the first hip hop crew to do Spaza in plett, a xhosa hip hop sub genre that is popular in Cape Town.

The 17 year old Mateki who is also a grade 9 student at Murray high school had been a dancer before as he perfumed in Murray high school shows, he also participated in what was suppose to be a talent search show “ Plett got talent” an initiative by Bitou municipality youth department. Later in 2010 he ( Mateki) started writing rhymes with his friend Thabo and they used to rap for fun while in the street till they received compliments from the public and that encouraged them to record their first ever song called I used to love you. At the moment they don’t have a name. They are just focusing on doing music. Mateki impressed me while expressing him with spaza ( vernacular) while Thabo come on with vocals complimenting each other. They intend to

promote themselves and their music is in the local music scenes through participating in local events. They said their music is about their experience and a true story as they respond in every situation through music. A lot is happening in local music scenes underground although at the moment I don’t have permission to inform the public but I had listen in many dope songs whom the people behind them are keeping it as a secret as they want to surprise the public. There is one hip hop mixtape that I’m dying to write about at the moment you have to think of the two best rappers from kwanokuthula or plett as they are also part of the project. Maybe if you attend Wednesdays words at afrocentric you might stand a chance to here this join as it might be performed in one of those Wednesdays.

Snippets for the Week

To hold a living creature, to learn its loveliness, to feel its heart beat in my hands, to know its trust, to see its tail wagging or hear its purr, and then it has to be put to sleep forever, only because there is nowhere to keep him for just a week or so, while we try to find him the good home that he deserves.

Kwanokuthula is over run with dogs and puppies. I have seen the worst cases of animals suffering from mange this week. Some of these dogs have sores in their mouths and cannot even eat, others have scratched themselves so broken and are covered in blood. Because they roam free, it does take a long time to catch them, but I will endure. Unfortunately, I have met many people who live in close vicinity, also covered in sores. Mange is contageous to humans and

something urgently needs to be done to rectify this situation.

Thank you to everyone who supports our project, for the cash donations, the jumble, the kind words, the food for chickens, cats and dogs alike. I am taking in as many as 20 dogs a week for sterilizing at present. This is the only way to put a stop to the unnecessary euthenising, but it is going to take a very long time and a lot of money, as the situation is completely out of control.

Another dilemma faced with daily, are the sick or injured animals. As the CVC focuses mainly on sterilizations and vaccines, we are just not able to help these poor animals. Hopefully, we can continue to depend on PAWS to help with these emergencies.

We so urgently need an Animal Hospital with a full time Vet, as well as kennels, to keep those that stand a chance to be adopted. If only there were no breeders in this world, the shelters would surely be empty. Please stop the breeding and sterilize your pets.

Meatless Monday began during WW I when the US Food Administration encouraged families to reduce their consumption of staple foods. Today, it is more about the benefits for people’s health and the environment.

Meat contains higher levels of saturated fat than plant based foods. Saturated fat intake has been linked to multiple preventable illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and various cancers.

Recently the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization declared the meat industry generates nearly half of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions that lead to climate change. Meat production methods cause nearly half of all stream and river pollution. The production of a pound of beef takes approximately 2,500 gallons of water, compared to a pound of soy, which requires only 220 gallons.

The thought behind choosing Monday is since it’s typically the start of the work week, the day when individuals settle back into their weekly routine. Unhealthy habits that prevailed over the weekend can be forgotten and replaced by positive choices.

Cape Town started a first for Africa when on April 6th, 2010 Compassion in World Farming joined with Cape Town’s Health Portfolio Committee in agreeing to officially endorse one meat-free day a week.

Saterdag 5 Februarie was die sestigste verjaarsdag van die Suidoos-Kaap Atletiekbyeenkoms. Vier skole het mekaar die stryd aangesê op Hoërskool Wittedrift se puik atletiekbaan en –fassiliteite. Die deelnemende skole was Hoërskool Wittedrift, Hoërskool McLachlan, Hoërskool Paul Sauer en Hoërskool Uniondale.

Die byeenkoms was gekenmerk deur puik organisasie en atletiek van hoogstaande gehalte. Hoërskool Wittedrift het ‘n standaard gestel wat moeilik oortref sal word.

Om ‘n oorsig te gee van die atletiekhoogtepunte is bykans onmoontlik, maar tog is daar sekere hoogtepunte wat uitgelig kan word. Dit is nodig dat daar gefokus word op die skitterende bydraes van Hoërskool Wittedrift se atlete.

Uitblinkers by die dogterskompetisie was onder andere: S. Nqcola Gewigstoot dogters o/14: 9,03m G. Mclean 100m dogters o/15: 14,30 sek.

Sy het ook eerste gekom 800m, 1500m S. du Preez Gewigstoot dogters o/17: 8,47m A. van der Heever 800m dogters o/17: 2:45,3 K. Gouws 200m dogters o/17: 28,7 sek.

Sy het ook eerste plekke in 100m, 400m en verspring.
