Man dies after truck collision Police closed the road through central Heckmondwike for several hours on Wednesday

By Staff Reporters A PENSIONER has died after being hit by a vehicle in Heckmondwike. Police were called to Market Place at around 3.45pm on Wednesday to reports of a serious road traffic collision. It is believed a concrete truck collided with the 81-year-old man, who was taken to Leeds General

Infirmary but died shortly after. Kirklees Council moved to quash initial reports that the man had been hit by a bin lorry. A refuse collection wagon is understood to have blocked the road to allow emergency crews to get access in the immediate aftermath of the accident. The driver of the 24/7 Concrete lorry is said to be “very distressed”, according to his boss.

Johnny Hunt, operations manager for the firm, said: “It’s very sad news and our thoughts are with the family involved. “Our driver is in a very distressed state as well. He has volunteered to be interviewed and is not under arrest or anything. “Primarily our thoughts are with the family affected.” A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We can

confirm that the man taken to hospital has died. “There have been no arrests and we have interviewed the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident.” The main road was cordoned off by officers during rush-hour traffic. Police are appealing for any witnesses to ring 101, quoting log number 1007 of January 8.
