The event took place outside the municipal center and continued with a relaxed gathering along Washington Avenue, where speakers reflected on Pride Monthʼs themes of dignity, belonging, love and joy.

As a community, we need to address the private-jet noise issue, along with the environmental and safety concerns that the residents of the Pascack Valley have about the frequency of the very-low-flying jets on their arrival to Teterboro Airport. The jet noise has increased over this year immensely.

In addition to the serious jet noise and pollution issue, my group TANS2 (Taxpayers for Aircraft Noise Solutions and Safety), is now concerned about Teterboro Airport proposing to fill in 11 acres of Meadowlands wetlands to add more hangers and parking lots to the airport. Unfortunately, if they are allowed to proceed, it will mean the destruction of these precious 11 acres of wetlands that are home to many threatened and endangered species. This project

Remediation total tops $216K on school overhaul

HILLSDALE School trustees approved two new charges June 22 for environmental testing and asbestos abatement at George White Middle School, adding about $2,000 and bringing total extra environmental cleanup and remediation costs at the century-old school to $216,270.

With the two extra charges approved — $890 for lead-based paint screening and $900 for monitoring unanticipated asbestos removal — the revised agreement with T&M Associates totals an extra $216,270, according to a resolution approved at the June 22 school board meeting.

The extra $890 charge, or modification No. 6, was to provide leadbased paint screening utilizing X-ray fluorescence (XRF) methods to investigate the lead content of priority and specialty paint applications.

In addition, an extra $900 charge, modification #7, was for T&M Associates to perform moni-

toring of B&G Restoration for the removal of 70 square feet of asbestos-containing floor tile and mastic. Those two changes increased extra environmental costs to a new total of $216,270.

In addition, school trustees approved a fourth project payment to Dobco Inc. of Wayne for $1,835,364.34, following review and certification by construction manager Epic Management and project architect BWS Architects, formerly DiCara Rubino. Project architect Joseph DiCara remains on the project until completion, district officials previously told Pascack Press.

The revised Dobco Inc. contract total to date is $37,187,350, said the resolution. The total increased from $33,557,000 to $37,057,700 on March 23 when trustees approved a $3.5 million increase for unanticipated demolition work and a new project recovery schedule.

Unrelated to the George White project, school trustees also approved nearly $6,000 for two separate asbestos abatement projects by B&G Restoration Inc. at Meadowbrook Elementary School. The resolutions note one remediation project costs $2,100 and one $3,800, for a total of $5,900.

Neither resolution provided project details. However, Lombardy said the remediation work was needed due to a burst pipe at Meadowbrook that involved old asbestos insulation requiring remediation.

He said officials were also “evaluating ceiling paint” that was disturbed over winter due to burst pipes.

George White project update Lombardy said current George White site work includes crews excavating the area in front of the middle school to install new storm drains and underground drainage systems. He said new structural steel for footings and foundations is in place and steel for the new construction is scheduled to arrive in

Moreover, he said, electric and plumbing rough-in work is moving forward, as crews install underground electrical conduit and plumbing lines before they begin pouring interior and exterior concrete slabs.

Lombardy said working with a century-old building presents daily challenges that require attention from a team of architects, engineers, construction personnel and district officials.

“We are staying focused on delivering a modernized building within our budget and timeline,” he said in a letter to residents.

It’s all fun and games in Hillsdale 110 years ago this week. The annual Firemen’s Carnival was held July 1–8, 1916, on the field (now a residential neighborhood) at Magnolia Avenue and Cross Street. The hand-printed sign on the left advertises land for sale at $400 an acre.

Generations of Pascack Valley residents have fond childhood memories of the fire departmentʼs carnival. Now held in the center of town off Hillsdale Avenue, it helps support Hillsdaleʼs bravest in their efforts to keep the borough safe from fire. You might be surprised to learn just how far back this tradition goes.

The department held its first fair in 1902, with proceeds helping to pay for a hose reel and pump—which the men had to haul by hand to the fire scene—and a small shed to house the equipment. Annual carnival proceeds would also help to build the first firehouse in 1906.

Lightning, license plate readers

The town administrator said he would look into the cost of adding a cellular notification alert to the local lightning detection system, as well as checking on the system at Clark Field, which appeared not to be providing an audio alert, according to the council president.

At the June 22 meeting, Council President Michael DeSena reported that while the flashing lights went off at Clark during a Friday night lightning storm in June, the audible lightning warning sound did not. DeSena said the flashing light and warning sound went off at all other local rec fields that he checked on.

He asked administrator Mark DiCarlo to find out if there was a glitch in the lightning detection system, as well as if he could check on adding a cellular phone alert for residents. He said he was told that River Vale residents can access Nixle for lightning detection alerts that notify as well as tell them when a local field may be safe again to use.

DiCarlo said he thought the alert system cellular service added about $2,500 to $3,000 in cost and that may have been one reason it was not activated. He said he would look into it.

Automatic license plate readers DiCarlo also reported that an automatic license plate reader (ALPR) system is almost done and officials await PSE&G to make final electrical hookups. He said four intersections will have license plate reader cameras, and one police vehi-

cle also has a license plate reader.

Councilman Tom Sears asked for an update on how the licensed plate reader cameras were functioning and a quarterly report on the mobile licensed plate reader vehicle.

DiCarlo said two of four intersection cameras were operating.

DiCarlo said that that Glenn Beckmeyer of Beckmeyer Engineering is working on a design concept for a traffic emergency warning sys-

tem at the Emergency Services Building.

Intersection update DiCarlo said the township is waiting for recommendations from Bergen County Engineering to improve the hazardous Washington Avenue-Van Emburgh intersection.

He said ideas to improve it included tree removal, striping and signage upgrades.

Sheinfield noted that in 2021, the then-council increased annual taxes about 5% to set aside funding for recreational improvements, including Memorial Field.

He listed the average 2026 tax increases as follows: Pascack Valley Regional High School, $245.29; Hillsdale School District, $909.75; Borough of Hillsdale, $200.83; and Bergen County, $66.91.

“As mayor, I am only able to speak to the additional $200.83 imposed by the governing body,” Sheinfield wrote. “The largest driving force behind the local increase was a dramatic 41% increase in the cost of the state health care plan. To offset this increase, we cut discretionary spending as much as possible while still being able to provide residents with the services theyʼve come to expect. Fixed costs such as health care, labor contracts and cost-of-living adjustments present constant upward pressure on our taxes.”

The mayor said shared services with Washington Township and River Vale have brought in revenue and saved the borough money.

He also said increased revenues from The Piermont at Hillsdale, part of a downtown redevelopment area, and the formation of a new Economic Development Committee should help the borough find ways to improve the town and raise revenue.

Mayors: Senate Bill S-1836 usurps local zoning

Several local mayors have alleged that a state legislator promoting legislation to allow “inclusionary” developments on nonprofit and religious properties has been misrepresenting the billʼs impact on local zoning and suburban communities.

Inclusionary developments include affordable housing with market-rate housing. Some local mayors allege that state Senate bill S-1836 would usurp local zoning codes and allow high-density inclusionary developments on religious/nonprofit-owned lands, flouting local zoning regulations and leading to massive, high-den-

sity developments that local officials strongly oppose.

The proposed bill, S-1836, sponsored by Sens. Troy Singleton (D-7) and Benjie Wimberly (D-35), was referred to the Senate State Government Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee on June 1.

The 15-page bill includes a synopsis noting that the legislation, nicknamed the “Yes In Godʼs Backyard Act,” enhances the ability of religious and nonprofit organizations to convert certain property to inclusionary developments with affordable housing, authorizes bonds for $250 million, and appropriates $50 million for an agency to assist development of religious and nonprofit properties.

S-1836 makes housing ʻa permitted useʼ on religious properties After contacting Sen. Troy Singletonʼs office, Pascack Press received their email: “The bill does not eliminate local planning board review. Applications must still be submitted to and reviewed by municipal planning boards under the Municipal Land Use Law. The legislation simply makes qualifying affordable housing developments a permitted use on eligible religious and nonprofit properties. The bill expressly contemplates planning board review and approval,” Singletonʼs office said, highlighting passages that require local review.

Moreover, Singletonʼs office cited Section 7 of the proposed law, which states, “A development project and any municipal consideration or action undertaken pursuant to this act shall be in compliance with the Municipal Land Use Law … and all other applicable municipal zoning ordinance requirements that do not conflict with the requirements of this act.”

“This means municipal review under the MLUL remains in place,” the office said.

However, several Pascack Valley mayors disagree, asserting the state law would override their local zoning boardʼs land-use regulations. Moreover, the New Jersey State League of Municipal-

ities, a nonprofit organization representing New Jerseyʼs 564 municipalities, agrees with the towns and has provided a model resolution for municipalities to adapt and use in expressing opposition to S-1836.

Ghassali: Senatorʼs response ʻfrankly insultingʼ Montvale Mayor Michael Ghassali put his reaction bluntly: “Other mayors may be more diplomatic, but Senator Singletonʼs response is frankly insulting to both our intelligence and the intelligence of our residents. If this bill passes, developers will be allowed to build at densities of 40, 60, and 80 units per acre, while also being granted one, two, or even three additional stories above what is currently permitted, all as of right and without any meaningful say from the municipality,” Ghassali told us.

Ghassali said S-1836 would limit the Planning Boardʼs role to reviewing aesthetics, building colors, traffic circulation, soil movement and minor details.

“What they will not have authority over are the issues that matter most to communities: density, location, and building height, which are precisely our biggest concerns,” Ghassali said.

Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo, whose town faces inclusionary developments on multiple properties, including the former Hilton Hotel and BMW sites, said he agreed with Ghassali. He noted

that the proposed bill states that planning boards enforcing municipal zoning regulations “shall permit conversions or partial conversions of eligible properties into inclusionary developments” per S-1836.

“Shall means shall. Sen. Singleton should read his own bill. It is quite disingenuous to suggest that these conversions are subject to our zoning regulations,” Rendo said.

Township of Washington Mayor Peter Calamari, this yearʼs vice president of the 10-town Pascack Valley Mayors Association, said he agreed with fellow mayors Ghassali and Rendo.

“These bills make it impossible to do any long-term planning. Also, the township is currently spending significant time and money to update its Master Plan. These bills, and potential future ones, make the time, money and effort pointless,” Calamari said.

We asked Singletonʼs office to address the Pascack Valley mayorsʼ critical comments about S-1836, but did not receive a reply by press time.

Similar bills, often referred to as “Yes In Godʼs Backyard” legislation, have been passed in other states, including both Republican- and Democraticcontrolled states, according to Jag Davies, a spokesperson for Cherry Hill-based Fair Share Housing Center, a not-for-profit advocacy group.

PARK RIDGE — James Marolda of Park Ridge has been named the grand prize recipient of Retro Fitnessʼ national Fit it Forward campaign, earning a free oneyear Ultimate Membership.

Marolda, 48, a senior principal geologist and hydrogeologist, was nominated by his friend Hana Froum after a difficult year in which he supported friends through serious illness and loss.

According to Retro Fitness, Marolda stood by one of his best friends during a battle with stomach cancer, helping with appointments, attending treatments and assisting with funeral planning after his friend died earlier this year. He has also continued supporting another close friend who is battling a progressive neurological disease.

“Fit it Forward was created to recognize the people who consistently put others first, and Jamesʼ story is a powerful reflection of what this campaign is all about,” said Kim Gouch, chief brand officer of Retro Fitness.

The national campaign invited people to nominate a “Real One” in

their lives — someone who consistently shows up for others and deserves support on their own health and fitness journey. Retro Fitness said the campaign generated more than 1,700 submissions from across the country.

Organizers said one of the goals of the Hive Tour is to expose beekeepers to different management styles and encourage the exchange of practical knowledge among members.

For Emerson officials, the selection of the Centennial Park Apiary as

a tour stop reflects the Environmental Commissionʼs ongoing efforts to support pollinators and educate residents about the important role honey bees play in local ecosystems.

The Northeast New Jersey Beekeepers Association, a local branch of the state New Jersey Beekeepers Association, NJBA, hosts the Hive Tour annually as part of its mission to promote education, mentorship, and responsible beekeeping throughout the region.

The week also included a firemenʼs parade on the afternoon of July 4 that drew firefighters from across Bergen County.

“It is expected that there will be 1,000 men in line,” wrote the Westwood Chronicle. “After the parade there will be hose laying contests for auto, hand, and horsedrawn apparatus. There will also be a water battle, pumping exhibition, greased pig chase, and tug of war.”

The Ridgewood and West-

wood fire departments took top honors for their athleticism that day. The two battled it out in the tug-of-war, with Ridgewood ultimately taking the prize.

However, Westwood bested them in the hose laying contest.

The first trial was a tie between the two departments at 56 seconds, but on the second trial Westwood did it in 51 seconds and Ridgewood in 52. Ridgewood firemen were quick to note that they were still tired from fighting a fire at Huttonʼs lumber yard the night before.

Looking back at photographs from that day, Mol said, one sees love and joy — themes she urged those gathered in Westwood to carry forward.

“No matter what happens, that cannot be taken away from us,” Mol said. “The love that comes from being connected to each other … the joy that comes from being ourselves, being our whole selves.”

Davis, a Westwood resident of more than 35 years, spoke personally about growing up transgender in the 1960s and 1970s, a time when, she said, information and language were scarce.

“I believe very strongly in protecting trans kids,” Davis said.

“After all, I was one.”

She added, “Trans people arenʼt asking for much, really. Just the freedom to be ourselves. You know, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Collins reflected on Westwoodʼs history with Pride, tracing the public display of the Pride flag at the Municipal Center to 2017, when then-Mayor John Birkner Jr. had the flag placed on the building.

She said that action helped set into motion “debate, reflection, and community identity” that has since become part of Westwoodʼs civic fabric.

“Celebrating Pride mattered then and continues to still matter,” Collins said.

Garabedian Vitez brought an interactive element to the program, recruiting volunteers to help display the colors of the Pride flag while explaining the history of the rainbow banner as a symbol of visibility, unity and affirmation. She described the flag as a sign of where people stand and who they stand with.

Sullivan told attendees he was

proud to stand with them, both as a Bergen County commissioner and as an individual. He noted Bergen Countyʼs LGBTQ+ outreach efforts and said public Pride observances remain important.

“Love is love, and that is what life is all about,” Sullivan said. “I will never turn my back on this community.”

Doran closed the program with a musical performance of “Donʼt Give Up,” adding to the eventʼs tone of encouragement and solidarity.

Bontemps said the gathering

serves as a visible affirmation of LGBTQ+ residents and their families while encouraging neighboring communities to consider similar observances of their own.

“Itʼs always a great celebration of unity, support and affirmation for the community,” she said.

“There are people here who love them and accept them and consider the diversity of our town to be an important part of the fabric of community life here in Westwood.”

How It’s Done: Fierce Falcons lock down NJSBL 9U title

Your Township of Washington Falcons beat Ramsey Blue, 5-3, on Sunday at Finch Park to win the NJSBL Baseball Championship for the 9U Division.

The Falcons got on the board in the top of the first inning after Declan Powers singled to left field, and Brayden Perrapato walked, each scoring one run.

A Colton West triple gave the lead, 5-2, in the top of the sixth.

Greyson Sayers started on the hill for Falcons 9U. The pitcher gave up four hits and one run over three innings, striking out four and walking two. Shilin Shah appeared in relief for the final three innings to close the game.

Colton West led with three runs batted in. The infielder went 1 for 3 on the day. Shilin Shah, Joseph DeFrancesco , Ozzie Goldberg, Jacob Tovbin, Declan Powers, and Colton West each collected one hit for the Falcons.

Falcons 9U had a strong eye at the plate, Landon Nabhani and Ryan Quintana led the team with two free passes each. Ozzie Goldberg stole two bases.

The Falcons 9U ran wild on the base paths, piling up six stolen bases for the game. They were sure-handed and didnʼt commit even a single error.

Since their 8U season, this team has been knocking on the championship door, and this spring their determination, perseverance, and hard finally paid off. They started the spring strong, coming in second place at the William T. Birch Memorial Classic in Fort Lee. The regular season had its ups and downs, but the team really came alive in the playoffs. A Complete Team Effort The Falconsʼ success began in the circle. Starting pitcher Jordana Nabhani (#70) delivered one of the leagueʼs finest seasons, posting a sparkling 0.714 ERA while limiting opponents to a .140 batting average over 42 innings. She struck out 72 batters while also starring offensively, batting .571 with 25 RBIs. Sharing pitching duties was leadoff hitter Daniela DeFina (#17), who batted .571, stole 28 bases, posted a 2.10 ERA, and struck out 37 batters in 25 innings. Her speed at the top of the lineup consistently put pressure on opposing defenses.

Behind the plate, Tessa LoRusso (#6) quietly anchored one of the leagueʼs best defenses. Catching every inning of the season, LoRusso controlled the running game while handling Townshipʼs talented pitching staff. Her impact becomes even more impressive considering the Falcons stole 133 bases while allowing opponents only 41 stolen bases all season.

Townshipʼs outfield gave opponents little room to find open grass Frankie Galiotti (#73) played multiple positions throughout the season while batting .531 with 21 RBIs from the third spot in the lineup.

Karleigh Zitko (#67) enjoyed one of the seasonʼs most remarkable improvements. Having never played softball before April, she developed into one of Townshipʼs most reliable hitters, collecting 12 hits while consistently reaching base.

Lyla Brue (#23) added offensive depth in the middle of the lineup with 10 hits during the

championship season.

Sophia Romero (#26) posted an outstanding .520 on-base percentage and played flawless defense, finishing the season without committing an error.

Defining moments Perhaps Townshipʼs biggest regular-season test came against Emerson.

Trailing 2-1 in the third inning against one of the leagueʼs premier pitchers, Daniela DeFina worked a one-out walk before stealing both second and third base. Jordana Nabhani followed with another walk and quickly stole second.

Frankie Galiotti then ripped a hard ground ball that plated both runners, giving Township the lead for good in an eventual 10-4 victory.

The postseason presented an even greater challenge After opening with a convincing 12-0 shutout over Northern Valley, Township squared off against River Edge Black in a memorable pitchersʼ duel.

River Edge ace Danielle S. and Townshipʼs Jordana Nabhani traded scoreless innings through the first three frames.

The decisive play came in the fifth inning With one out, Nabhani drew a walk and stole second. Galiotti lifted a fly ball that was dropped, allowing Nabhani to freeze briefly before recognizing an opportunity.

Aggressive baserunning and heads-up instincts enabled her to race all the way home from second base with what proved to be the game-winning run in a dramatic 43 victory. Nabhani then returned to the circle to secure the final outs and send Township to the semifinals.

The championship game was a showcase of Townshipʼs offensive firepower Township blanked Oradell in

the opening inning before erupting for five runs in the bottom half and never looked back in a 15-4 championship victory.

Yaremko, Galiotti and Nabhani each drove in three runs, while Shah added two RBIs. Nabhani and DeFina combined for six strikeouts to secure the championship.

The championship team was coached by manager Ray Nabhani, along with assistant coaches Sean Macer, Nick Casbar, Andrea McNamara and Linda LoRusso.

With the spring championship complete, many Falcons players have already transitioned to summer competition in the Bergen County Girls Softball League and Kinderkamack Softball League summer programs.

Jordana Nabhani, Daniela DeFina, Shyla Shah and Nora Yaremko earned selection through independent tryouts to represent the Township of Washington in the

2026 Little League 12U District 4 Tournament, which begins June 23.

For the Falcons, however, the legacy of the 2026 spring season is secure: an undefeated 14-0 record, a league championship, and a season that will be remembered as one of the finest in Township softball history.

Ray Nabhani tells us: “Iʼve coached many of these girls since kindergarten, and over the years have developed relationships with many of the parents.

“The dedication the girls, and their families have shown in the season and even more so, the offseason, is what sets these girls apart.

“From the middle of December, these girls and their families, spent every week doing offseason training as a group. The coaches broke the girls into sections, every week, and drilled fielding, situations, and each girl faced 100 balls in the cage.

“When we broke offseason camp, we knew our girls would be ready to go, and hit the ground running. This was evident by our first game, where the girls took a commanding 15-1 win over Woodcliff Lake, which features two pitchers from local club teams.

“The girls all created a great bond with each other and spend a lot of time together on and off the field. When it was time to play, the girls displayed a level of professionalism that is unheard of from 11- and 12-year-old girls.

“These girls all showed leadership and gained a lot of experience that will continue to create strong young women as they continue middle school and begin thinking about high school.

“It makes me feel good to say that any one of these young ladies can become a leader at whatever path they choose in life and be great at what they do.”

Westwoodʼs annual Pride celebration began in 2023 and has continued to grow as a community-led event. Bontemps said organizers hope neighboring municipalities will eventually establish their own Pride observances while continuing to work together across town borders.

“We would be happy to help any residents in those towns who want to champion that,” she said.

As the program concluded, Bontemps thanked the speakers, performers, organizers and attendees for supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Westwood is proud,” she said, “and we are not going back.”

educators, League of Women Voters members, and residents gathered Thursday evening at the community center for a discussion on New Jersey school board elections and public education issues.

Although the eventʼs scheduled guest speaker was called away, LWVʼs Tomasina Schwarz, a special education teacher, led a conversation about the responsibilities of local board of education trustees, the process for running for school board, and issues facing public schools.

A significant portion of the discussion centered on book challenges and New Jerseyʼs recently enacted Right to Read law. Schwarz displayed several books that have been challenged or banned in other parts of the country and encouraged attendees to consider how literature can help students examine issues including censorship, disability, race, and gender.

Participants discussed voter engagement, election administration, and the importance of informed participation in local school board races. The nonpartisan League of Women Voters of Northern Valley is at lvw-of-northern-valley.com.

What makes scoliosis particularly challenging is that it is rarely just a structural issue.

Use A.I. safely and protect yourself from scams

Dear Savvy Senior, I keep hearing about AI in the news and how itʼs being used in scams. Iʼm not very tech savvy and find it confusing. What should I know to protect myself?

— Cautious Senior Dear Cautious, Youʼre not alone. Many older adults are asking the same question. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is becoming part of everyday life, from smartphones and internet searches to banking and customer

Keep in mind that AI isnʼt perfect. It can give answers that sound confident but may be outdated or incorrect. For important matters like your health, finances or legal issues, always doublecheck with a trusted source such as your doctor, bank or a government website.

Watch for scams Scammers are using AI to make their schemes more convincing. You may receive an email that appears to be from your bank or Medicare or a phone call that sounds like a family member. Be especially wary of urgent messages that pressure you to act quickly or warn that your account will be closed.

Protect yourself The most important habit for avoiding scams is to slow down. If you receive a suspicious call, text or email, stop and assess the message. Donʼt click links, download attachments or respond right away. Instead, contact the company or person directly using a phone number or website you trust – not the one provided in the message.

Scammers now use AI to mimic voices and write convincing messages. Even if something

sounds like itʼs from a family member, friend or company, verify it another way before taking action.

Never share sensitive information like your Social Security number, bank details or passwords unless you initiated the contact and trust the source.

Banks and government agencies, including Medicare and Social Security, will not ask for this information by phone or email.

Urgent requests for payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency are also red flags.

For added protection, use two-factor authentication, and keep your devices updated. You can even consider call-blocking services from your mobile service provider.

If something doesnʼt look right, take time to check it or ask a trusted friend or family member before responding.

Keep learning Technology is always changing, but there are ways to stay informed. Many libraries and senior centers offer free classes on digital skills and online safety. Trusted resources like AARPʼs Fraud Watch Network (aarp.org/fraudwatch) and the Federal Trade Commission (consumer.ftc.gov) also provide up-to-date scam alerts and protection tips. In addition, internet and mobile provider Cox Mobile (cox.com/mobilesafety) offers a library of research, tips and online safety tools to keep you informed and secure online.

AI may seem complicated at first, but a little awareness goes a long way. By staying cautious and building a few smart habits, you can protect yourself and make this technology work for you.

Dorothy Mae Culhane, 92, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026. She was born in 1934 to Mary “Mae” and Benjamin Kelley in Brooklyn, N.Y. She married her beloved John in 1957, and together they shared 69 wonderful years.

She taught her family about faith, kindness and appreciation.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, John; her four daughters, Kathleen Renz and her husband, Edward, Patricia Davies, Eileen Culhane, and Ann Hopper and her husband, Steven; her four grandchildren, Daniel Renz and his wife, Lauren, Sean Renz and his wife, Hana, Amanda Hopper and Thomas Hopper; three great-grandchildren, Theodore, Gracelynn and Emma; her sister-in-law, Elisabeth Kelley; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Kelley.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood.

Funeral service May 12 at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Fremont Ave., Park Ridge.

She worked for many years as a pharmaceutical technician in Ridgewood and was a lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Rochelle Park.

Nancy was extremely generous, with a heart of gold. She was honored with the title of Customer Favorite in her role at the pharmacy. Everyone close to Nancy knew her first for her famous cheesecakes and second for her charming personality.

Nancy and Ray always enjoyed days spent together at the Jersey Shore and in Atlantic City.

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie; son-in-law, Joe; granddaughter, Brittany Kanabar; greatgranddog, Luna; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

She was the daughter of Timothy and Anne Donnelly Clougher and was predeceased by her siblings, Jack Clougher, Teddy Clougher, Mary Judge and her husband, Bill, and Noella Owen and her husband, Jiggs; as well as in-laws Joseph Taylor, Louise Sprofera and her husband, Sam, Florence LaTour and her husband, Lou, and William Taylor and his wife, Ann. To know Nancy was to love her.

Her final wager was won, and she is now at peace. May she travel safely home in the arms of her guardian angels.

Mario Anthony Inchiosa Jr.., 97, of Woodcliff Lake, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Elisabeth Harris Stamm; devoted father of Andrew S. Inchiosa and his wife, Leslie, Maria V. Warburton and her husband, Harry, and Mario E. Inchiosa and his husband, Christopher; dear brother of Christina Lambert and Louis Inchiosa; and loving grandfather of Russell Warburton and his wife, Alyssa, Christina Warburton, Joseph Warburton, Valerie Warburton and Sarah Warburton.

Born in Weehawken, Mario lived in Woodcliff Lake for 59 years.

He taught and conducted research at New York Medical College for more than 50 years as a professor of pharmacy and research professor of anesthesiology. He was a member of Our Lady Mother of the Church.

A Mass celebrating Marioʼs life and faith was held May 22 at Our Lady Mother of the Church, 209 Woodcliff Ave., Woodcliff Lake.

Interment at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus.

Stephen A. Barrow, 91, of Township of Washington, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, after a prolonged illness. He is reunited with his beloved wife, Barbara; his son, John; his parents, Margaret and Edward; and his much-loved Nana, Mary.

He is survived by his sons Stephen, Brian and Scott; his brother, Thomas, and his wife, Anna; and his nieces Ann Margaret, Nicole and Elizabeth, and their bountiful families.

Throughout his life, beyond his career in finance, Stephen enjoyed sports, the Boston Red Sox and New York Rangers, 18 holes on the green, his time at the pool as the slowest swimmer ever, and nights watching classics on TCM. Most of all, he remained a generous provider and supporter to his family.

He will be dearly missed.

Viewing hours Thursday, May 14 at Becker Funeral Home in Westwood. A Mass was celebrated Friday, May 15 at St. Andrewʼs Church in Westwood.

Leona ‘Lee’ MEYER

Leona “Lee” Meyer, née Kostecki, of Hillsdale, matriarch of the Alfred B. Meyer family, passed into the Lordʼs loving arms on Friday, May 22, 2026.

Lee was a sister to nine, mother to seven, grandmother to 11, great-grandmother to 24 and great-great-grandmother to 10. Her love and commitment to family, faith and friends guided her through life.

Before slowing down in her late 90s, Lee was active at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church and with the Hillsdale Senior Citizens Organization.

Known to family as “Gram” and to her Lollipop Nursery School family as “Miss Lee,” she will be warmly remembered as an incredibly sweet, honest and lovable lady who rarely said no to anyone or any good cause.

A Mass celebrating Leeʼs life and faith will be held Monday, June 1, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, 69 Valley St., Hillsdale.

Private cremation will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made in Leeʼs name to St. John the Baptist R.C. Church.

Kenneth Peter SAGE

Kenneth “Kenny” Peter Sage, 1961–2026, passed away on May 7, 2026. Kenny was a lifelong resident of New Jersey and lived for many years in Haworth.

He was a graduate of the Marie Katzenbach School in Trenton and was employed for 30 years at the ARC in Hackensack. More recently, he attended the TATC in Teaneck.

Kenny was a cherished son, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his sisters, Susan Sage Vincent and Valarie DiLascio, and his nephew, Christopher Vincent.

Kenny was well known for his terrific sense of humor. He liked interacting with others and always strove to be independent.

As a young man, he enjoyed participating in sports, including baseball, basketball, swimming and running, and he was an enthusiastic bowler until recently.

A devoted fan of many New Jersey and New York sports teams, Kenny was a true armchair enthusiast, most often seen wearing the hats and shirts representing his favorite teams.

A kind, generous, and friendly man who was always quick with a “thank you,” Kenny was much loved and will be dearly missed by many.

Celebration of life was held May 30 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Knickerbocker Road, Tenafly.

Idella ‘Dell’ Irene LUDWIG

Idella “Dell” Irene Ludwig, 96, a lifelong resident of Park Ridge, passed away on May 31, 2026, in the same home where she was born on July 22, 1929.

Dellʼs parents, Irene and Edward Heath, along with her brother, Arthur, and sister, Dorothy, moved from the city to Park Ridge in 1925 and immediately built the family home. The Great Depression years were hard, but life in Park Ridge relied on vegetable gardens, the backyard chicken coop and family. Life was more rural and simpler then, with Dell chasing her collie, Champ, playing in the municipal park, and skating, swimming and fishing in Electric Lake.

Dell graduated from Park Ridge High School in 1946, where she was active as a cheerleader. Her father, Edward, passed away two years before her graduation. Her mother, Irene, died in 1984 at age 95.

After graduation, Dell commuted to the city and worked at AT&T, where she met her future husband, Robert O. Ludwig. They were married in 1951 at St. Paulʼs Episcopal Church on Grand Avenue in Montvale, where Dell also had been baptized.

Between 1952 and 1963, three sons and two daughters were born: Bob, David, Gail, Leslie and Peter.

The family grew again between 1983 and 1994 with eight grandchildren — Lisa, Cheryl, Garrett, Dustin, Alexandra, David, Matthew and Thomas — and eight great-grandchildren: Justin, Molly, Nora, Natalie, Naomi, Leon, Noah and Penelope, with two more on the way.

Dell worked for the Park Ridge Board of Education in various capacities, including in the Special Education Department, before retiring after 25 years. She took special delight in volunteering at the Park Ridge Library, teaching English as a Second Language.

Dell and Bob relied heavily on St. Paulʼs Episcopal Church in Montvale for strength, friendship and guidance throughout their lives. The Altar Guild and ushering were a regular part of every Sunday service, followed by selling coupons as a church fundraiser.

A large family gave Dell great happiness and enjoyment, even if all were seldom together, coming from Maine, Delaware, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, California and locally from Park Ridge. On holidays, the supper table often extended from the dining room into the kitchen.

A birthday was never forgotten for any family member, and most were celebrated with supper and a chosen favorite homemade birthday cake.

Decades of Outer Banks, N.C., vacations and camping often brought the family together for beach time, boating, fishing and meals with many chairs around the table.

Dellʼs home was always welcoming and was the place she loved best, surrounded by nature, her favorite trees, bushes and windblown leaves.

Inside the dining room, a wall was covered with family portraits, and pen-

cil marks in the corner measured the height of each family member from toddlerhood to adulthood.

After a full, happy and content life, Dell passed away after 96 years, never wishing to live anywhere else.

Her last words expressed how thankful she was for her husband, family and parents. Dell and Bob remained soul mates, sharing every day of their adult lives. They will now spend eternity together at Westwood Cemetery after a private graveside ceremony.

Donations may be made in Dell and Bobʼs memory to their favorite charities, St. Jude Childrenʼs Research Hospital or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Carole M. Schultz, 85, of Harrington Park passed away on June 3, 2026. Born on Jan. 2, 1941, in Union City, Carole was a high school math teacher in the Jersey City public school system.

An avid participant in Newfoundland pet events, and best known for her gardening, she enjoyed sitting on her porch and watching nature.

Carole was predeceased by her parents; her best friend, Julia Cambria; and her beloved pet, Keeley.

She is survived by Lou Cambria, Linda Jaworowicz, Scott, Donna, Fred, Silas and Reid Jaworowicz.

Carole was loved by all and will be dearly missed.

A graveside service was held June 8 at Fairview Cemetery, 500 Fairview Ave., Fairview. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to a pet charity of your choice.

Nancy Jane SCHLICHT

Nancy Jane Schlicht, 93, passed away on June 21, 2026. She was born on Sept. 24, 1932, in Hackensack.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Ethel Stumpf; her brothers Charles and William Stumpf; her sister Joan Van Tieghem; and her daughter Linda Schlicht. Nancy touched the lives of countless patients, families and fellow staff with her compassionate, confident and professional manner.

Nancy raised six beloved children in Hillsdale, and later moved to Montvale. She is survived by her daughter Cindy OʼNeill; daughter Beth McCoy; son Roger Schlicht; daughter Ginger (Martin) Masters; and daughter Jennifer (Gary) Leach.

Nancy showered her family with love and kept us all laughing with her riotous sense of humor.

Most of all, she was the center of our universe, the matriarch of our family, the best among us, and she will be missed terribly. We find comfort knowing she is eating chocolate, sipping coffee, and loving us all to the moon and back in Heaven.

HOME & GARDEN PVHS lacrosse team backs Narcan access effort

The Pascack Valley High School boys lacrosse team used its April 16 charity game against Paramus High School to support a Bergen County effort aimed at saving lives in the opioid crisis.

The team raised approximately $900 for the Buster Fund at Childrenʼs Aid and Family Services, which supports the purchase and maintenance of Buster Boxes — newspaper-style dispensers stocked with naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan. The medication can reverse an opioid overdose and is available from the boxes free of charge.

The cause was selected by the players after senior co-captain Nick Lamparillo, an intern with the Paramus Police Department, learned about the initiative through the department and brought it to the team.

Lamparillo helped organize the fundraiser with Paramus

Police Capt. James Teehan after attending the September 2025 launch of a Buster Box at the Paramus Public Library. He said the team wanted to support a local effort with a direct public benefit.

“Our team chose the Buster Fund for this yearʼs charity game because we wanted to support a meaningful local cause,” Lamparillo said. “Our goal as a team is to spread awareness about the modern drug epidemic and provide vital information on how Narcan can be used to save ourselves and those around us.”

His family established the Buster Spike Lucky Elkin Marri Love and Luck Fund at Childrenʼs Aid and Family Services to support Buster Boxes and expand access to Narcan throughout Bergen County.

The family also hosts BusterStock, a free concert that benefits the fund.

Friends and family members are raising funds to help cover funeral and final expenses following the unexpected death of Bruce D. Laughton, a former youth and high school coach, devoted father and recovery advocate remembered for his generosity, humor and dedication to others.

Laughton, 54, passed peacefully and surrounded by family on June 11.

A Park Ridge native, Laughton raised his children, Elena and Colby, in Westwood, where he coached several of their youth sports teams. He later coached high school sports at Park Ridge High School and Paterson Arts & Sciences Charter School.

According to his obituary, Laughtonʼs “pride and joy in life” were his children. He continued to support their athletic endeavors throughout high school and college, attending nearly every game, match and meet.

A graduate of Ramapo College with a bachelorʼs degree in history, Laughton spent most of his career there working in security, maintenance and facilities management. During his tenure,

McKinley Park is set to receive its long-awaited playground upgrade in fall, completing nearly two decades of planned playground renovations across the borough.

The current playground will be removed shortly before the anticipated Oct. 1 installation date. The project is expected to take a few weeks and will be funded through the boroughʼs capital account, with matching funds from the Bergen County Open Space Grant.

Playground upgrades began in 2007 at Meadowbrook Park and continued over the years at Voorhis, Westvale,

Hegeman and Brookside parks.

The new McKinley Park playground will include infant and child swings, a parent-and-infant swing, a dual-child swing, slides, a buckle bridge, rope-venture and rock-wall climbing features, a smaller toddler and preschool area, and an inclusive spinner designed for all sizes and abilities.

The playground also will have new borders and nearly 6,000 square feet of wood-fiber playground surfacing.

The adjacent reading garden, created by Troop 321 Eagle Scout Elisabeth Maul and opened in April, will receive two new out-

door musical pieces. McKinley Park also features tennis courts with pickleball lines, a small basketball court and a bocce court.
