POOL SEASON ‘SUNK’ DUE TO COVID-19

The Stonybrook Swim Club—a highly popular 12-acre multi-pool complex in northeast Bergen County—will shutter for the 2020 season due to restrictions imposed on municipal pools to help stem the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor John Ruocco told Pascack Press last week.

Instead of crowded streets lined with flag-waving spectators all decked out in red, white, and blue, throughout the region we saw small, solemn ceremonies each attended by a handful of local officials wearing masks.

In Washington Township, the traditional procession gave way to the townʼs first ever “virtual” parade. Residents were asked to send in patriotic photos and video clips of their homes and families, and these were aired on the local cable access channel, WCTV. No doubt, the footage will serve as a testament to these historic times for future generations.

“To not let Covid-19 win, my Public Affairs Director Daisy Velez came up with a great idea to honor our fallen veterans,” Mayor Peter Calamari wrote. “She reached out to Washington Townshipʼs amazing residents. She and her team asked the residents to decorate their porches in the spirit of the day and take and send in pictures. A new 5,000-square-foot urgent care facility will be coming to the Shoppes at DePiero Farm complex due to its approval May 19 by Montvaleʼs Planning Board.

Mayor Michael Ghassali welcomed the approval of CityMD, Montvaleʼs third local urgent care facility and a much-needed tenant for one of few vacant spaces at the DePiero Farm commercial property, anchored by Wegmanʼs supermarket.

Ghassali said both the applicantʼs planner and boroughʼs planner agreed that the CityMD urgent care operation represented an “inherently beneficial” use for the 5,106-square-foot property, currently a red barn building just off of Mercedes Drive.

This week in history: In Park Ridge, burglars snatch cash-filled safe

the fortune contained within: $13,600 in cash, $300 in gold coin, a diamond ring, and negotiable notes amounting to several thousand dollars.

In 1929, $13,600 was enough to buy two houses in Park Ridge.

Siegelʼs own home, as reported in the 1930 census, was worth $6,600. The sum is equivalent to over $200,000 today.

It took more than an hour for the crime to be discovered. Mrs. Siegel arrived home first and called her husband. Police Chief Anthony Salimone began an investigation.

Jacob Siegel believed it had to be an inside job.

“It is thought that the robbers knew something of Mr. Siegelʼs business practices and knew where the safe was located, and that he was in the habit of keeping considerable cash there. It had been a

custom of his, when paying bills, to go into the house and return and pay the bills in cash. This gives rise to the suspicion that the work was done by some person or persons who were aware of these facts,” The Morning Call stated.

Siegel suspected a former employee who had been fired after having been caught stealing $10.

In the Siegel driveway police found a cigarette pack of the same brand the ex-employee used to smoke.

Siegel told reporters at the time, “It is my belief that someone who knew just where the safe was planned the robbery. The thieves were probably going after the receipts of the night before, knowing that inasmuch as the banks were closed yesterday, I could not have deposited the money. happened to have there.”

It would not be the last of Siegelʼs bad luck. There was a fire in 1929, followed by another in 1932. In between, in 1931, his place was raided and 21 50-gallon barrels of beer were confiscated— this was during the Prohibition years when it was illegal to sell alcohol. Siegel himself lay ill in the hospital at the time, but his bartender was arrested.

In the 1940s the restaurant changed hands. Redesigned and rebranded as the Pascack Inn, it was extremely popular during World War II and the post-war period, the site of numerous dinners, celebrations, fund-raisers and meetings for individuals and organizations. A few years later, in 1957, the Pascack Inn was destroyed in another fire. For years locals referred to the spot as “hard luck corner.”

Hillsdale veterans mark first observance at new memorial

Despite the pandemic lockdown in New Jersey, Hillsdaleʼs veterans were able to hold a brief ceremony at the boroughʼs new memorial on Broadway, dedicated this past November.

“It was our first Memorial Day ceremony at the new memorial,” writes American Legion Post 162 Cmdr. Doug Frank. “With the help of our mayor, we were able to hold the ceremony as long as it was private, without public attendance, had limited personnel and we observed social distancing.”

This yearʼs parade and public ceremony were canceled, but, Frank added, “We cannot let something such as a pandemic hold us back from honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Mayor John Ruocco reflected, “This year, the honoring of these brave and selfless individuals will not involve a parade of veterans, marching bands, school groups, Little League baseball teams, or elected officials. There

will be no pancake breakfast sponsored by our Boy Scouts, no large gatherings or speeches in

Field renovations on the way “These long overdue renovations are being funded by a county grant and money appropriated by the borough last year,” read a borough announcement. “They include regrading the baseball field and augmenting the infield clay for better drainage, plus the addition of a warning track. Some

additional bleachers will be added, along with refurbishing the existing bleachers on the hill by the first base side. A walking path will also be added linking both parking lots.”

The work is expected to be completed by mid-June.

The ceremony still took place, but it was not the usual public gathering—only a handful

of local officials and veterans assembled in the park to witness the speeches and laying of wreaths.

Similarly, the tradition of a parade continued, but this year residents were encouraged to cheer from their steps, stoops, and sidewalks as the parade of emergency vehicles and veterans

in convertibles made its way through the boroughʼs streets.

MONTVALE

The Borough of Montvale put modern technology to good use in keeping up with tradition.

While this yearʼs Tri-Boro parade was canceled, and no large public gathering took place to mark Memorial Day, the borough did hold a short, modified ceremony that morning at Veterans Monument Park in the center of town.

It was streamed live on the boroughʼs Facebook page and is still available for viewing.

“Here in Montvale, since our first mayor in 1894, we have held our Memorial Day ceremony,” Mayor Mike Ghassali told the

small crowd that morning. “Here 125 years later we continue this tradition to honor the heroes we lost. Rain or shine, war time or peace time, and in difficult times like these, we take our precautions and honor our heroes. This is the least we can do.”

Local officials, first responders, veterans, and scouts took turns laying wreaths around the boroughʼs veterans memorial during an event that lasted only a few minutes.

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic the Westwood Volunteer Fire Departmentʼs Memorial Day Committee was unable to place flags on the graves of its deceased members.

The men usually travel to cemeteries every year to honor the members who have died. However, because many cemeteries are closed this year, they decided to place the flags in Firemanʼs Park

as a way to honor and remember those who have passed.

In total, 284 flags were placed to honor 51 Ladies Auxiliary members and 233 firefighters.

the season due to health and safety concerns. Ruocco said about 15 residents offered opinions during the online meeting, most holding out hope for the longstanding municipal pool to open again in 2021. He said most residents speaking appeared to support its closing for the 2020 season.

“I respect the choice the council made to close the pool,” said Ruocco.

The popular swim club had been a go-to summertime destination for area youngsters and adults for over 50 years, but state restrictions imposed to stop large social gatherings and state orders requiring people to “social distance” by remaining at least 6 feet apart, were driving forces behind closing the popular pool, Ruocco said.

The 12-acre property features five pools, including a diving pool, a heated competition pool and a winding 14-foot water slide. Moreover, the club previously offered learn-to-swim programs, a snack

bar, a basketball court, two gazebos, and a variety of entertainment including band nights, theme nights, ping pong, table soccer and arts and crafts.

Ruocco said some residents were told the pool closure decision might be forever, but that is not the case. He said if finances and budgets are in similar shape as previous years come 2021, the pool should open as planned.

He dismissed rumors that the borough planned to close the pool and sell the property.

“We want the pool to be successful and to us success is breaking even,” said the mayor.

He said before COVID-19 restrictions were imposed this year, municipal pool commission officials had met with consultants to see what could be done to boost pool memberships.

“The key is going to be a plan thatʼs going to assure membership at a certain level because membership is a revenue-driver,” noted Ruocco.

He said currently 87 percent

of Hillsdale residents do not belong to Stonybrook.

“Due to the governorʼs closing mandates and the repercussions of COVID-19, it was determined that it is in the best interest of Hillsdale to not open Stonybrook this year. Anyone that has already paid will be issued a refund. We want to thank all our loyal members and wish you a safe summer. Be well and we hope to see you next year!” wrote pool manager Patty Hughes on Stonybrookʼs website.

Hughes has worked at Stonybrook for nearly a quarter-century.

Last summer she told Pascack Press that she attributed Stonybrookʼs long-term success and popularity to “constantly reinvesting” in the facility, including annual maintenance, renovations and upgrades.

While some municipal pools have gone under or been closed due to declining memberships or demographic changes, Hughes said Stonybrook was going strong. “[You] have to keep investing

in clubs and keeping up with the times. People are looking for more than a place to cool off so we have to be more than a swim club. You have to keep adding things and make it attractive for people to come,” Hughes told Pascack Press last summer.

The location at the corner of Piermont Avenue and Cedar Lane was a swimming spot as early as the 1930s.

At one time it was the Pascack Pool, a man-made lake with a sandy bottom. There were also diving boards, a refreshment stand, and a jukebox. Sandy shores around the pool created a beach-like retreat.

In 1959 Caesar DeFlora purchased the pool and began transforming the property. The original Pascack Pool was filled in and the

Stonybrook Field Club was created directly to the south on the same property. Then a private club, it had cabanas and a ballroom. Weekly luaus were held inside the clubhouse and private parties and weddings were catered throughout the year there. There was often entertainment at the clubhouse—including concerts by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.

DeFlora sold all the land to the Borough of Hillsdale in 1976.

The western portion was sold to a developer and the Stonybrook Manor condos were created. The northern portion (formerly Pascack Pool) became a soccer field.

Rich, creamy and decadent, cheesecake is enjoyed across the globe. There are many famous cheesecake bakeries in North America, and those who canʼt resist digging their forks into this beloved dessert may assume that cheesecake traces its origins there.

In fact, cheesecake traces its origins to the ancient Greeks.

The first “cheesecake” is believed to have been created from a ricotta-type cheese base on the Greek island of Samos. Excavated cheese molds were found there that dated to around 2,000 B.C. Cheesecake was considered a good source of energy and there is evidence that even Olympic athletes were fed cheesecake during the first games. Greek brides and grooms also were known to rely on cheesecake as their cake of choice for weddings. Original cheesecakes were made from flour, wheat, honey, and cheese, then formed and baked, according to Cheesecake.com.

After the Roman conquest of Greece, cheesecake was adopted by the Romans. Their name for this type of cake was “placenta” and it was baked on a pastry base or sometimes inside of a pastry case, advises Whatʼs Cooking America. Cheesecakes also were called “libum” by the Romans, and were used as an offering at the godsʼ temples. Cheesecakes also were introduced to other areas of Europe thanks to conquering Roman armies. By 1,000 A.D., cheesecake could be found throughout northwestern Europe, England and Scandinavia.

After being nominated by his Honors Spanish IV teacher, Ms. Elena Spathis, Christian was selected and interviewed on behalf of ACTFLʼs Lead with Languages

campaign. In his interview, Christian highlights his passions for learning Spanish and for promoting inclusion. He describes how learning another language has positively impacted his life in our increasingly interconnected, diverse, and multilingual world.

Emilie Cinancio, of River Vale, like just about anyone, never expected this year to turn out the way it did.

She was enjoying the weekly classes and educational trips on Jewish life with her teacher, Rabbi Yosef Orenstein, on her last Hebrew School year before her Bat Mitzvah.

In mid March when lockdown set in, the school immediately moved virtual and continued regular classes and lesson on Zoom.

“I really enjoyed how I was able to continue the classes—and seeing my teacher and my friends —through the zoom video class,” Emilie said. “I am so grateful for this.”

Emilie is one of over 65 children in Valley Chabadʼs Hebrew School.

On Sunday, May 17, Valley Chabad held is end-of-year ceremony for the school with children and parents participating on zoom. The oldest class received their completion awards and enjoyed a interactive program arranged by the Hebrew School Director Hindy Drizin.

IS YOUR PORTFOLIO AS EFFICIENT AS IT COULD BE?

Editorʼs note: The following article is for informational purposes only.

When you look at a line chart of an investmentʼs ERIC KOHLMEIER historical performance, one feature to note is its volatility – how frequent and how extreme the ups and downs have been. This is significant because volatility is the most commonly used measurement of an investmentʼs risk. The greater

the volatility, the riskier the investment is considered to be.

If you viewed a chart comparing the stock marketʼs versus the bond marketʼs performance, youʼd see stocks have been significantly more volatile than bonds. Logically then, a 100% bond portfolio should be less risky than one including both bonds and stocks.

Right?

Not so fast.

In fact, according to a Morningstar study for the years 1970 through 2018, a portfolio comprising 67% bonds (measured by the

20-year U.S. government bond) and 33% stocks (using the S&P 500 Index) offered less risk and better returns than a 100% bond portfolio. In other words, the former was more “efficient” than the latter, which leads to a concept investors should be aware of: the efficient frontier.

Start with the basics Having a grasp of the efficient frontier begins with understanding: • The relationship between risk and return • How diversification can help

manage risk and return In general, risk and return go hand in hand. As an investmentʼs risk increases, so should its return.

If you buy a Treasury bond, the return will probably be low because the risk of default is low. If you buy a stock, however, the potential risk can be significant— think back to what happened to stocks during the Great Recession—and you should expect a greater return potential as “compensation” from the market for accepting that additional risk.

Diversification is simply blending different investments in a portfolio in an effort to manage risk and return. The result is your “asset allocation.”

A very simple asset allocation might include stocks, which tend to be risky but offer growth potential, and bonds, which have been more stable and provide income (interest). You can help manage your risk and return by how much you allocate to each type of investment.

For example, if you have a 75% stock/25% bond portfolio, it should offer a greater risk and return potential than one thatʼs 25% stocks and 75% bonds.

Getting to an efficient frontier Of course, there are lots of other investments for you to choose from, and there are an infinite number of portfolios you could construct from the stocks, bonds, and other assets available. Each of these blends has a unique overall risk and return level.

If you plotted them all on a chart, youʼd likely see whatʼs shown in the hypothetical graph below. The “pies”—representing different asset allocations—farthest to the left and highest up are the ones with the best expected risk/return tradeoffs. If you connected those “dots,” you would have it: the efficient frontier.

Thatʼs what the efficient frontier is, but what does it mean for investors?

It means that if your risk/return tradeoff doesnʼt land along the frontier, your portfolio is not as efficient as it could be.

Youʼre taking on too much risk for the level of return youʼre getting, and you probably need to make adjustments to decrease risk, improve return, or both.

Finding help Determining whether your portfolio is as efficient as it could be may require help from a professional financial advisor. He or she will likely ask about your goals (what youʼre investing for), time horizon (how long until you need to tap into your investments), and risk tolerance (how comfortable you are with swings in your portfolioʼs value).

Based on your responses, your advisor can help build a portfolio designed to help reach your goals as efficiently as possible. Asset allocation cannot eliminate the risk of fluctuating prices and uncertain returns.

On Monday, May 25, the Borough of Emerson continued their tradition of holding its Memorial Day Ceremony at Monument Park.

For the first time ever, they also live streamed the well-attended event to those residents who were unable or chose not to attend due to the Covid-19 virus.

The ceremony began with the Presentation of the Colors by the Joint Honor Guard consisting of our Emerson Police and Fire Departments. Commander of

American Legion Post 269, John Hogan, led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The ceremony was led by Mayor Danielle DiPaola and included comments by the keynote speaker, retired Colonel John Tumino, as well as by Emerson Police Capt. Michael McDermott.

Social distancing was practiced by all those who were present. Everyone who attended was pleased that the annual solemn remembrance was held, especially

our veterans who either attended in person or virtually.

As is customary, wreaths from various civic organizations were presented by members of the Emerson Borough Council. DR. KAPLAN: Healthy habits for a high-anxiety time

Currently during this world pandemic, many people are suffering from anxiety. If you watch the news, you will notice that all DR. ERIC KAPLAN, reporters are KAPLAN BRAIN & stating that BODY people are dying, disease is spreading, businesses are going bankrupt, children are starving, the virus is dangerous, people are not following the rules, the economy is crashing, citizens are protesting, and the government has made bad decisions that have killed innocent people. It is no surprise that people who watch the news will suffer from anxiety.

Most anxiety is caused by the nervous system being over stimulated. As a result, the best way to help reduce anxiety is to relax the brain. In my opinion, if you are trying to relax the brain, it is vital to stay away from stimulants, in addition to staying away from the news and the press conferences.

The most common stimulants are drinks like coffee, tea, soda, juice, energy drinks, sports drinks, carbonated drinks, shakes, sugarfree drinks, milk, lemonade, and smoothies. The only healthy drink is water, but not carbonated water, smart water, or coconut water. A better option is to squeeze some organic lemon, lime, cucumber, or oranges in the water, or even flavor it with some mint leaves.

Besides drinks, there are lots of foods that act as stimulants that will increase your chances of anxiety, as well. Sugar and sugar replacements such as honey, syrup, stevia, aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, sucralose, sucrose, corn syrup, corn fructose, xylitol, rice syrup, and many other sweeteners are all stimulants. Food dyes,

food preservatives, food coloring, natural flavors, and artificial flavors are also stimulants, so please look at all the labels and avoid these ingredients if you are stressed or suffer from anxiety.

The easiest way to avoid these products is to only shop on the outside of the supermarket. That is where you will find all your fruit, vegetables, nuts, eggs, poultry, fish, and meat. Stay away from all the food in the aisles where food is stored in bags, cans, boxes, and containers.

Not only is it important to stay away from these foods and drinks to reduce anxiety, but it is also important to stay away from all food after 5 oʼclock in the evening. Eating or drinking at night will stimulate cortisol which is the stress hormone and will increase anxiety and disrupt your sleep. Another way to reduce cortisol production is to stay away from all electronics, including cell phones, after 5 oʼclock. The electronics emit a blue light which will increase stress and anxiety, as well as causing difficulty with focus and anger management, which will result in a short temper.

Last week, we spoke of the children being on the computer too much with distance learning, and how that relates to one out of every four children suffering from anxiety, and that one way to combat this problem is with blue light filter glasses.

It is also recommended to turn off all wi-fi and power down all electronics to reduce harmful radiation which can also lead to stress and anxiety. Try to unplug as much as possible and keep the electronics at least 6 feet away from you at night and always at least 6 inches away during the day. If you ever have to carry your cell phone, iPad, or computer on you, make sure it is on airplane mode or

turned off to reduce electromagnetic field exposure. In addition, it is better to use earphones with a wire rather than the wireless bluetooth devices. Finally, if your phone has a 5G setting, I also recommend turning that off as well.

There have not been enough safety studies done to determine whether 5G is safe yet. In the Pascack Valley area, the 5G towers are usually located by the police stations so please be aware.

In addition to reducing electronic exposure and electromagnetic fields, forming good health habits will also drastically decrease your levels of anxiety.

These include exercising every day, eating healthy, taking vacations, going in the sun, being in nature, avoiding sugar and alcohol, walking barefoot in the grass, going to bed before 10 p.m., avoiding the news, getting off social media, detaching from your cell phone, writing in a journal, complimenting people, showing love to your family and friends, giving to charities, gardening, writing, telling jokes, volunteering, practicing mindfulness, reading, listening to positive podcasts, breathing deeply, meditating, cleaning, praying, and laughing.

If you miss one day, it is no big deal. The greatest thing about life is every day is a new opportunity. Performing well today and living in the moment is a better option than worrying about yesterday or worrying about tomorrow.

Hopefully, as a result of this ordeal, people will start to realize that health should always be your number one priority. If you are not healthy, you are no good to yourself, your family, or the community.

Not only are people realizing they should not take their health for granted, they are getting inspired to get the “Corona Six Pack” instead of gaining the “Covid 19 Pounds.”

Remember that the people that are most prone to being affected by this virus are people with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, compromised immune systems, liver disease, or lung disease. Therefore, if you follow these suggestions you will drastically increase your survival rate when you are exposed to this specific virus.

The government and the news will have you believe you can hide from this virus by wearing a mask, gloves, and staying at home, but the truth is viruses are everywhere. The best advice is to stay home if you are sick, and if you are in the highrisk group, take all necessary precautions like washing your hands, not touching your face, not leaving your house, not accepting visitors, and not going to Walmart or the supermarket.

The Cleveland Clinic is reporting that if you are over 70 years old, the death rate for Covid-19 is 3 percent, which is extremely high and even worse than the flu. However, conversely, they also found if you are under 60 years old, the death rate for this coronavirus is 0.002%, which is actually less than the flu.

Therefore, it makes more sense to focus our time, money, efforts, and education on the community that are in the nursing homes, over 70, and suffer from these previously stated chronic conditions.

For the healthy population under 60 years old, we are actually causing more health problems such as depression, suicide, anxiety, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, insomnia, malnutrition, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress syndrome, anger, hypoxia, domestic violence, starvation, and high stress, which can also weaken the immune system making them more suseptible to coronavirus, as well as heart disease and cancer.

The most important factor to reduce stress is to take action and come up with a plan. Set up your daily schedule to include your health. Every night before bedtime,

say three things you are grateful to have in your life right now. When you wake up, it is best to have a “Health Power Hour.”

Start with a simple stretching routine. Then, wash your face with cold water for 30 seconds. Next, swish coconut oil around in your mouth for 30 seconds to help kill off bacteria and viruses and then spit it all out. After that, drink a 12-ounce glass of warm lemon water. Then read some positive quotes or inspirational passages.

Next, meditate for 10 minutes.

Dear Almost, Creating a living will (also known as an advance directive) is one of those things most people plan to do, but rarely get around to actually doing. Only about one-third of Americans currently have one. But the cold hard reality of the novel coronavirus may be changing that. Hereʼs what you should know along with some resources to help you create an advance directive.

To adequately spell out your wishes regarding your end-of-life medical treatment are two key documents: A “living will” which tells your doctor what kind of care you want to receive if you become incapacitated, and a “health care power of attorney” (or health care proxy), which names a person you authorize to

make medical decisions on your behalf if you become unable to.

These two documents are known as an “advance directive,” and will only be utilized if you are too ill to make medical decisions yourself. You can also change or update it whenever you please.

It isnʼt necessary to hire a lawyer to prepare an advance directive. There are free or lowcost resources available today to help you create one, and it takes only a few minutes from start to finish.

One that I highly recommend thatʼs completely free to use is My Directives (MyDirectives.com). This is an online tool and mobile app that will help you create, store and share a detailed, customized digital advance directive. Their easyto-use platform combines eight thoughtful questions to guide you through the process. If youʼre not computer savvy, ask a family member or trusted friend to help you.

The advantage of having a digital advance directive versus a paper document is being able to access it quickly and easily via smartphone, which is crucial in emergency situations when theyʼre most often needed.

the most ardent wildlife supporter does not want to see his or her garden trampled, eaten or adversely affected by animals.

Safeguarding gardens from local wildlife can require some trial and error. Animals may find ways to circumvent gardenersʼ initial efforts to protect their gardens, but the following methods might just do the trick the first time around.

• Erect physical barriers around gardens. Barriers may

not be gardenersʼ first choices, as some people feel barriers such as wire cages or mesh coverings make it more difficult to tend to gardens and rob gardens of some of their aesthetic appeal. But cov-

erings and wire cages can effectively prevent wildlife from trampling or eating plants while still allowing the gardens to get adequate sunlight. Make sure barriers extend to the ground so animals cannot access gardens by entering beneath the barricades.

• Fight intruders with odor.

Stray cats may mistake gardens for litter boxes and enter them to relieve themselves. Preventing such intrusions can be as simple as placing items around the garden to

reduce the likelihood that gardens will be mistaken for litter boxes.

Peels from oranges and lemons or coffee grounds can be placed in the garden and can emit odors strong enough to deter cats.

• Install motion detecting lights around gardens. Motion detection technology might be enough to deter nocturnal wildlife from trampling or eating gardens.

Animals might be spooked and run away when lights suddenly turn on. A similar approach can be taken using noise instead of lights. Gardeners who hope to avoid erecting barriers around their gardens can put up posts instead, attaching aluminum cans or wind chimes to the posts that

will make noise when animals come near. Much like light, noise can be enough to deter animals.

• Consider raised garden beds. When small critters, such as moles, are the main problem, then raised garden beds with wood or plastic bottoms and sides can be enough to safeguard gardens.

Raised garden beds might not be accessible to small critters, though such beds likely wonʼt deter larger animals from getting into gardens that are not barricaded.

• Erect fencing around the yard. Though fencing is expensive, fencing in a backyard or side yard where gardens are located can deter wildlife big and small from trampling or eating gardens.

Wildlife is worth protecting, but gardeners must also take steps to protect their gardens from animals looking for something to eat.

Leasing a vehicle has its advantages. Lessees often point to the excitement of getting a new vehicle every three years as one of the best reasons to lease. Monthly lease payments also tend to be less expensive than monthly financing payments, allowing people without much money to put toward a new vehicle the chance to drive a new car or truck anyway.

Figures support the idea that more and more drivers are giving leasing a try. According to Cox Automotive, a leading auto industry research company, new vehicle lease originations rose from just over one million in 2009 to roughly 4.5 million in 2016.

Come the end of a lease, drivers new to leasing may have lots of questions regarding returning their vehicles. The following are some com-

Can I return my car to any dealer?

Many lease agreements dictate that vehicles be returned to an authorized dealer of the make of the car. Gray-black brake dust is made up of iron particles formed by the grinding of the brake rotor by the brake pads. However, brake dust also can contain some metallic elements and other components housed in the brake pad — including asbestos.

The automotive resource YourMechanic says that, while brake dust is not indicative of a poor braking system, over time brake dust can corrode the clear coat on a car and may eat into the aluminum alloy surface of the wheel. That is why so many drivers try to clean away brake dust, potentially exposing them to dangerous materials.

DIYers may be better off visiting professional service centers to have brakes addressed rather than doing the job on their own.

OSHA says all automotive brake and clutch repair facilities in the United States must comply with the OSHA asbestos standard.

These include using negative pressure enclosure/HEPA vacuum systems and low pressure/wet cleaning methods.

While asbestos is being phased out of many automotive components, it is always best to treat bakes, clutches and more with extra caution in the event that asbestos is present.

Joseph A. FERRARA

Joseph A. Ferrara, of Washington Township, passed away on May 3, 2020, at the age of 96 following a brief illness. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, he was selected for Officers Candidate School and served his country as a 2nd Lieutenant during World War II, one of the last survivors of the Greatest Generation.

Joseph was all one could hope for in a father. He exemplified the strong, loving, wise “Patriarch” whose undying fidelity to his family, his unfailing affirmation, and presence in both good and difficult times were a pillar that stood firm for decades in the heart of the home and in the hearts of those who loved him.

Josephʼs Catholic Faith defined his life; he placed fidelity to Godʼs Law above all else. His great love of the truth was seen in his defense of the Faith and his involvement in Catholic action in the political realm, during the course of which he employed his gifts as a powerful orator and skilled writer. But Joseph also knew how to laugh. His delightful sense of humor and quick wit set him apart from men who are merely imposing but not loveable.

Joseph follows his beloved wife, Jane, who departed this world thirty-one years ago. He is survived by his beloved sister Virginia, his devoted children Christopher and his wife Wendy, Diane, Joseph, and Paul, his beloved grandchildren John, Andrea, Thomas, Christopher, Joseph, and his wife Maggie, Justin, and his great-granddaughter, Cecilia.

Joseph will be deeply missed by all who loved him. The world has lost a man of great goodness and integrity, loved and respected by all who knew him.

Henry worked as a machinist in the medical manufacturing industry. He was a member of the River Vale Fire Department.

Charles BRODERICK

Charles (Richie) Broderick, 74, of Park Ridge, passed away on May 19, 2020.

Richie is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia and his sons, Thomas and Richard and daughter-in-law Kristin and his grandchildren, Shea, Jack, Kate and Sean, his step-sisters, Lynn (John), Regina (Bob), Jane (Eddie), sisters-in-law Regina (Pete), Joanne (Mike) and brother-in-law Bob (Joan) and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents John and Frances Broderick, his step mother Evelyn Broderick and his brothers John and Robert.

Richie was born and raised in Brooklyn and was a graduate of Midwood High School and Brooklyn College before moving to Park Ridge 35 years ago.

Richie served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968.

He worked as an Ornamental Ironworker for Local Union 580 in NY for over 25 years. Riche was an avid Met and Jet fan and enjoyed watching Notre Dame football. But most of all, he enjoyed coaching his sonsʼ baseball teams and going to his grandchildrenʼs softball, baseball, soccer, basketball and football games. Richie was a master of facts and trivia. His good sense of humor and quick wit will be missed by his family and friends.

Geraldine M. LaMere, 94, of Westwood, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 23, 2020 surrounded by her family.

Geraldine (Gerry) was born in Jersey City N.J. to the late Jacob Alfred and Gertrude Eggers.

She was the loving wife for 49 years to Clifford, who pre-deceased her in 1995.

After raising her two children, Gerry entered the business world and worked for The Otis Elevator Company in Montvale, N.J. for many years. Known for her amazing memory for birthdays, names, family history and just about everything else, it was unwise to challenge her. She was her familyʼs own personal Ancestry.com.

She enjoyed seeing her friends at the Park Ridge Golden Age Social Club playing Bingo and socializing. She enjoyed playing games which included Mahjong and just about anything with words. She was fastidious about her appearance and a smart dresser. She loved that she was often mistaken for a person much younger than she was.

But the true love of her life was her family which includes six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Always present at family gatherings, she was usually the first to arrive and the last to leave.

Gerry is survived by her son Glenn and his wife Tina of Park Ridge and her daughter Cheryl LaMere Kraynak and husband George of Westwood; her grandchildren, Cristin and partner Amy, Douglas and wife Cortnie, David and fiancee Christina, Caroline and husband Matt, Janelle and husband Sean, Jaclyn and husband Eugene; and her great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Brynn, Dylan, Emma, Matthew, Caitlin, Jack, Sydney, Sawyer, Alex, Joseph, Remi and James. Gerry is pre-deceased by her brother Alfred and sister Gloria.

A graveside service was held at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus on May 26, 2020.

Giro C. Miano, 91, of Hillsdale, formerly of Bronx, New York, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2020.

Giro was the loving father of Marilyn Poole of Mahwah and her partner Christopher Kinder, and Jerome Miano and his wife Joanne of Hillsdale; cherished grandfather to Eric Poole, Lindsay Poole, Stephen Miano and his wife Lillian, and Andrew Miano and his girlfriend Leanne Heidenberg; beloved companion to Rita Simone of Rutherford. He is predeceased by his dearest wife of 49 years, Anna Miano (Mele), who passed away on the same day in 2001.

Giro and Anna also shared the

same birthday of August 22, 1928.

Giro was a proud Marine, serving his country from 1946 to 1949. Following his service, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill to attend aviation school, which prepared him for his long career in aircraft maintenance for United Airlines. As he often described it, it was love at first site for young Giro when he met Anna through a mutual friend. They married in the Bronx in 1952, then moved the family and settled in Hillsdale in 1963.

Family and friends will remember Giro for his outgoing personality, storytelling, love of Frank Sinatraʼs music, and his passion for dancing, which he was still doing five nights a week well into his eighties. But most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy in life were his grandchildren, each of whom he was immensely proud of.

Immediate family had a private graveside service at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus. A memorial service for friends and family will be held later in the year when it is safer to gather.

Charles was a kind, thoughtful and loving individual. David S. Russo of Westwood, an electrical and computer engineering major at Rowan Universityʼs Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, has graduated magna cum laude with the class of 2020. Russo earned a place on the deanʼs list every semester since his enrollment in fall 2016.

While studying for his ECE degree, he also pursued a minor in music composition. He was to

have a senior recital featuring all of his musical compositions from his studies at Rowan, but it was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Russo is a 2016 graduate of Westwood Regional High School and earned his Eagle Scout rank.

He is the son of Maria and John Russo of the borough.

He is pursuing a career in renewable/sustainable/green energy engineering.
