HILLSCLASS OF 2026 ORGANIZES FOODTRUCK FESTIVAL

The Pascack Hills High School sophomore class says itʼs thrilled to announce its food truck festival, Tuesday, June 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the school parking lot, 225 W. Grand Ave.
This event promises a diverse array of local food vendors. Swing by to indulge in treats from Clydeʼs Italian Ice, Coney Island Pizza, The Empanada Lady, and The Hen and The Hog. The festival is cash-only, with a rain date of June 12.
The festival promises not only a delightful culinary experience; it also serves as a vital fundraiser for the sophomore class. All proceeds will help offset costs for upcoming events, including the junior and senior proms, and the safe graduation initiative for the class of 2026.
This yearʼs festival is spearheaded by Madeline Charnow, sophomore class president. After the resounding success of her Columbus Day Food Truck Festival, the school administration

ACHYEAR Mr. Jeff Jasper at Pascack Valley High School challenges students of his government class with a project to create awareness and raise funds to support U.S.veterans in need. They do this with support for American Legion Post 162 in Hillsdale. After creating a fundraising message that they share with their

fellow students, they team up with Legion members to implement their actions. Over two days just prior to Memorial Day, two teams of students and Legionnaires greet the students as they arrive each morning. Students who are already aware of the program are able to make a donation and receive a poppy.
The poppy has been a symbol associated with Memorial Day for over a century. The activity meets two of the four pillars of
the mission of the American Legion, support for veterans in need and working with Americaʼs youth.
This year, the project was run by Nico, Sophia, Shane and Hannah. The Pascack Valley student body came through with record contributions. Commander Doug Frank and members of Post 162 all thank Vietnam veteran and Legionnaire Jeff Jasper for his leadership that encourages students to support this project. They
also thank the team and all the students who contributed.
The veterans also attended the PV memorial service on Thursday morning, where the history club, under Leah Jerome, recognizes those who attended Pascack Valley and went on to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Commander Douglas Frank American Legion Post 162 Hillsdale

ABELOVED Fieldstone Middle School music and choir teacher—many of whose students have gone on to professional careers in music, education, on Broadway, in Hollywood and in the film and music recording industry—got the surprise of his career at his final performance on May 22.
During the last song of the spring chorus concert, the back curtain opened and Fieldstone alumni joined current singers on stage. Past students held up sheet music with their graduation years written on the back creating the timeline of James “Mr. Q” Quarantoʼs career and commitment to FMS.
Elizabeth Gloeggler and Stephanie Buckley, Montvale residents and FMS graduates of 1988 and 1992, respectively, spearheaded the surprise. Inspired by Mr. Qʼs lasting impact, they organized the event, reaching out to fellow alumni through a Google form and a Facebook group, “Fans of Mr. Q,” which quickly gained 105 members.
The preparation was meticulous. Alumni who couldnʼt attend sent messages via the Google form, while the Facebook group became a hub for sharing memories and coordinating the event. To ensure everyone could join the performance, Gloeggler and Buckley shared the lyrics to the concertʼs final song, “One Voice” by Barry Manilow, which Mr. Q chose to close his final concert, as it was the last song in his first concert as a teacher in 1981.
Before the current chorus began their rendition, Mr. Q shared the story of his initial performance, which didnʼt go as planned when the stage lights, which were supposed to come up gradually, with each new voice added, were brought up all at once, ruining the effect.
This time, the students started the song with their backs to the audience. One by one, they turned and joined in, culminating in a powerful performance that included students, alumni, and families all touched by Mr. Qʼs dedication.
In addition to the surprise performance, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Darren Peterson thanked Mr. Q for his dedication to the school. He received gifts from staff and the eighth-grade class who then went around and said a few words about their teacher. Words such as dedicated, committed and supportive were common from students.
An eighth-grader noted, “A piece of you will always be at this school.”
Mayor Michael Ghassali presented a proclamation “for Mr. Quarantoʼs commitment to excellence, his dedication and professionalism” and thanked Mr. Q for

Ghassali said the proclamation will be placed in the town archives to permanently honor the dedicated teacher.
In an interview with Pascack Press, Stephanie Buckley revealed she was shocked to hear the news of Mr. Qʼs retirement. “I never thought this day would come. I always thought he was going to be teaching here.”
Thatʼs because Mr. Q spent his career teaching at FMS. He came to the middle school as a first-year teacher in 1981 and spent the rest of his career teaching music to generations of Montvale students.

The Baskin family also shared their experiences. Owen Baskin, a current student, performed a solo during the spring concert. Mr. Q mentioned that he also taught Owenʼs father, Todd Baskin. Rachel Baskin, Owenʼs mother and a member of the Montvale Board of Education, praised Mr. Qʼs passionate dedication to his students.
In an email to Pascack Press, Rachel Baskin explained that all four children attended FMS and were in Mr. Qʼs classes and chorus. Owenʼs older siblings, Andrew, Hannah, and Joshua, graduated from FMS in 2018, 2019, and 2021 respectively.
Rachel Baskin told us, “Montvale is incredibly blessed to
have had such a passionate educator share his talents and love of music and confidence in performance—all of Mr. Qʼs students would shine, in the classroom and on the stage.”
Mr. Qʼs commitment to students went beyond the classroom. He frequently volunteers as a chaperone on the eighth-grade field trip to Washington, D.C. He also attends the band and chorus trip to Six Flags Great Adventure. His dedication to the school and young members of the community is an inspiration for educators and residents alike.

It was 44 years ago that Dick Cella, in his first year as the Westwood Cardinals Varsity Baseball Coach had a determined squad that won the NBIL season title, the state sectional crown, and the prestigious Bergen County Coaches Championship.

Sometimes this was cut up for souvenirs for military unit members. ‘And long

TWASINTHEDECADEAFTER the U.S. Civil War that the ladies of Park Ridge came together and held something like an old-fashioned sewing bee, except this was no ordinary day of stitching. The result of their production was a large American flag, 5 feet by 8 feet in size.

What prompted them to make the flag? Weʼll never know for sure. Perhaps it was pure patriotism. It could be that they had need of a flag for a ceremonial occasion, and it was more economical, or enjoyable, for the woman to sew one instead of buying one. Eventually the flag was given to the Park Ridge School, but whether it was created specifically for that purpose is a story lost to history
Whatever the reason, the women of Park Ridge gathered at every available moment and industriously cut and stitched their flag. The five-pointed stars, all cut out by hand, were only 37 in number; the flag was made between the admission into the union of Nebraska (1867) and Colorado (1876).
Many parts of the flag were also sewn by hand, while others show the uniform stitches of a treadle machine. Sewing machines had recently started making their way into American homes, a revolutionary replacement for hand-sewing.
The womenʼs flag flew proudly from a pole in front of Park Ridgeʼs one-room wooden schoolhouse. The school in those days was set back from Pascack Road and Park Avenue, standing about where the Park Ridge High Schoolʼs baseball diamond is today That building, the only school in town, extended through eighth grade, but many did not make it that far. In that era, a basic grammar school education was considered sufficient for most Pascack Valley children, who would grow up to be farmers or homemakers.
When the school was renovated in 1876, school clerk William Park purchased a fresh flag to go with it. Park kept the old flag for decades. His daughter, Miss Augusta Park, donated it to the Pascack Historical Society in the 1940s. The flag is still preserved in the museumʼs textiles department. We hope the women who created it would be happy to know their handiwork exists a century-and-ahalf later and is in safe hands.

Fieldstone breaks drought with softball championship
The Fieldstone Middle School softball team of Montvale clinched their first NBMSAL Softball League championship in over 15 years, defeating Holdrum Middle School of River Vale with a final score of 12-9.
From the first pitch, it was clear that the Falcons were in top form. Sixth-grade pitcher Taylor Stankowitz led the defense with an impressive array of pitches that kept River Valeʼs batters off balance. Taylor struck out fifteen batters over six and two-third innings.
On the offensive side, Fieldstone was unstoppable. Leadoff hitter Nina Tuli went three for three at the plate and scored three runs, while Madison Higgins had five runs batted in. At one point, the Falcons led the game by a score of 12-3.
Yet, the game remained tense until the very end, with River Vale
mounting a comeback in the final inning to narrow the gap. With the bases loaded and the winning run at the plate for River Vale, 8thgrader Ava Angrisani came in to pitch and recorded the final out via strikeout to secure the league championship for Montvale.
The path to the championship was certainly challenging.

Worth the wait: Montvale library’s renovations complete

The Montvale Free Public Library has undergone muchneeded renovations. The library, which moved from Grand Avenue to Depiero Drive more than 20 years ago, now is revitalized, from the physical building to programming and services.
Following a temporary library closure in April to allow for the installation of carpeting, it
was library director Giulia Bombaceʼs joy to announce in the May newsletter that renovations are completed: thatʼs fresh paint, reconfigured seating, wireless printing, a central printing station, and additional books.
The library has created a reading garden with outdoor seating and tables for patrons. (“You, too, can add to scoutsʼliterary rock snake, Rosco,” May 20, 2024.)
The borough approved $80,000 in library renovations in
the 2024 municipal budget, which was used to cover a large portion of the carpet replacement. Bombace explained the libraryʼs budget funded the remaining costs. She is credited with designing the new library and the Montvale Department of Public Works assisted in the renovations.
In an interview with Pascack Press, Bombace explained that the library created a strategic plan survey that patrons completed at the end of 2023. The changes to the library are based on the results of this survey.
She explained that physical renovations were made to reflect changes to programming and create a cheerful, inviting space to encourage patrons to participate.”
The main goal of this renovation, she said, is to create a friendly environment for community members to gather. While the changes to the building have created a cleaner and more welcoming library, the new variety of programming has encouraged more patrons to attend library

The Township of Washington Police Department says that on May 31 between 7 a.m. and 11:19 p.m. a house on Pine Lake Drive was burglarized while the resident was not home.
The department said, “Entry was gained through a rear door. Proceeds are unknown at this time. The incident is being investigated by the Township of Washington Police Department along with the Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Investigation. We want to remind residents that home burglaries can occur at any time, day or night. Burglars are opportunists. Eliminate opportunities for them by locking all doors/windows/gates.”

So many folks came together on June 2 for a tail-wagging good time at the Dog Adoption Paw-ty, hosted by Thrive at Montvale in collaboration with Real Dog Rescue. Attendees enjoyed meeting adorable pups while indulging in delicious snacks and refreshing drinks, creating an atmosphere of

Valley Chabad flips for ‘Chicago Boyz’
Valley Chabad held a vibrant and meaningful Lag BaʼOmer Community Day for Israel at Beechwood Park in Hillsdale on Sunday, May 26. The event is hailed as “a resounding success, bringing together community members of all ages to celebrate this joyous occasion.”
Rabbi Yosef Orenstein of the Valley Chabad Teen Leadership Initiative tells Pascack Press that “Families and individuals gathered to enjoy a day filled with unity, camaraderie, and festive activities. From lively music and delicious food to engaging games and inspirational teachings, there was something for everyone to enjoy.”
He said participants were able to connect with one another, strengthen their ties to Israel, and celebrate the rich traditions of Lag BaʼOmer: the 33rd day of the Omer, a period of seven weeks between Passover—which commemorates the Jewish people's exodus from Egypt—and Shavout, which commemorates the giving of the Ten Commandments.
A highlight of the event was a performance by the award-winning Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team, a professional gymnastics troupe consisting of talented young men and boys from the Chicagoland area. Their performance includes acrobatic stunts and tricks inside twirling jump ropes, catapulting off mini trampolines and thundering tumbling routines.
Founded in 1999 by professional gymnast Tim Shaw, these young inner city youth are taught discipline, respect, hard work, integrity and teamwork.
Chicago Boyz competed in Season 8 of “Americaʼs Got
Talent,” making it to the finals. Orenstein said “The event provided an opportunity for people to come together, share in the joy of Lag BaʼOmer, and show their support for Israel and bring together the community of all ages. Park Ridge American Legion Auxiliary Unit #153 is proudly sponsoring one delegate—Aliana (Lia) Kovalyov from Pascack Hills High School—to the 2024 Jersey Girls State Program.
Jersey Girls State is held at Georgian Court College for a week in June. This year the program runs June 23–27.
At Girls State, each girl, as she registers, becomes a citizen of an assigned city. The citizens set up city governments and elect city officials. The City Councils then enact ordinances to govern the cities. The city officials enforce the ordinances. Two cities constitute a county. The county governments are organized by the elec-
tion of a board of freeholders, a sheriff, etc., for each county.
The elected officers then proceed to function in all county matters, as provided by the constitution and the laws of the state of New Jersey. The counties together become the state.
Each girl is assigned to one of two parties—Federals or Nationals—so they may see how political parties function. They develop their own party platforms and discuss issues they choose.

ried out according to the existing laws of New Jersey.
Following the State Primary Election is the General Election, when citizens elect the Girls State Governor. From Assembly and Senatorial districts they elect the members of the Girls State Assembly and Senate.

The gains we have made here in Westwood since 2016 when Westwood for All Ages began and the boroughʼs formation of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee have helped to elevate the conversation around what it takes to create communities where all of us can live and thrive in place, even as we age.”
She said, “This has been evidenced by an enhanced focus on pedestrian safety, age-friendly additions to some of our public parks, benches in front of the Community Center and Borough Hall, robust senior programming on topics that improve overall quality of life, enhanced senior transportation, and the more recent townwide mailer pointing out all the various resources available to our older residents.”

I hope to bring some of the insights Iʼve gained working as the project manager for Westwood for All Ages to this task force so that Westwood as well as other municipalities will all benefit from our work together.”
The County of Bergen said in a press statement shared with Pascack Press that it has been making strides to create “age-friendly” communities since 1966 with the establishment of the Division of Senior Services. It noted that in
health care programs, and a member of the Bergen County Board of Commissioners as designated by the Chair of the Board.”

According to the county, “Senior citizens make up more than 20% of Bergen Countyʼs population. This task force will advise county government on ways to enhance our communities and maintain that our seniors have access to the services and resources necessary to age in place with confidence, such as housing education, access to recreational and cultural activities, opportunities to participate in social and civic engagement, the promotion of employment and volunteerism, and access to comprehensive health care.”
Tedesco said, “This task force is a testament to the countyʼs commitment to addressing the diverse needs of our residents. Together, we are promoting a higher quality of life and creating a community where our seniors can age in place with dignity, independence, and respect.”
Commissioner Chairwoman Germaine Ortiz of Emerson added, “This task force represents a significant step forward in our commitment to creating communities
that support the health, well-being, and independence of our aging population. We look forward to working together to build a more inclusive and supportive environment for all older residents of New Jersey with Bergen County leading the way.”
The county said, “Through this pioneering initiative, the County of Bergen remains steadfast in our efforts to develop ongoing action plans to further promote and strengthen programs for our older adults.”
The task force “shall consist of eight to 14 members, including a representative from theOffice of the County Executive, the director of Bergen County Department of Health Services, the director of the Division of Community Transportation, and the director of the Division of Senior Services, or their designee; as well as a director of both a small-mid size AgeFriendly community and a large size AARP community within Bergen County; a representative from higher education within Bergen Count; and two representatives from either a non-profit government organization that has programming that impacts our senior population that manages or operates housing/or transportation/or

Following Westwoodʼs success Westwood said it was privileged to be recognized by AARP and the World Health Organization as an Age Friendly Community and inducted into the Network of Age Friendly States and Communities in early 2019.
Bontemps also started a popup food pantry service early in the Covid crisis, delivering food to shut-in seniors. The pantry has since become a full-service pantry that distributes food and items weekly to anyone in need.

Residents will have the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) right in their backyards throughout the summer. The convenient Mobile DMV provides residents with an easy way to update driverʼs licenses, renew registration, and obtain placards.
Three Pascack Valley communities will host mobile DMVs through the summer: Hillsdale, Woodcliff Lake and Montvale.
• Hillsdaleʼs mobile DMV will be in the townʼs west parking lot, between Wendyʼs and Chipotle, June 11. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., patrons can walk up and complete the following transactions without an appointment: update their driverʼs license; receive non-driver IDs; apply for an examination permit; surrender license plates; or obtain a disability, purple heart, or disabled veteran placard. Appoint-
ments will need to be made for new real IDs, registration renewals and duplicate titles.
• The mobile DMV serves Montvale June 25 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Patrons can attend mobile DMV in the employee lot of the borough administration building, 12 DePiero Drive.
This mobile DMV requires appointments to obtain real and non-driver IDs, renew registration, apply for examination permits, and duplicate/replace titles. No appointments are required for surrendering license plates or obtaining a disability, purple heart or disabled veteran placard.
•The Woodcliff Lake Mobile DMV will be held at the Tice Senior Community Center at 411 Chestnut Ridge Road, Woodcliff Lake. There will be two events this summer: July 2 and Aug. 6. (A third event will be held on Oct. 1.) All events will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This mobile DMV has the same appointment requirements as Montvale.

Over the past month, the adult department has hosted a beginnerʼs guide to hiking, body wellness for gardening, and the news behind the news. The library implemented a book club on the first Monday night of every month.
Bombace said there was such high demand for participation that the club now meets two nights. Patrons will now have the option to attend the book club on the first Monday or first Tuesday night of every month.
In addition, Bombace reports, the library plans to install gallery hanging brackets for art exhibits. These exhibits will display artwork by local artists monthly. The library is installing additional seating, shading, lighting and blinds.
The library uses the Montvale Community Network Facebook page to notify residents of these renovations and advertise programs and events. Bombace expressed gratitude for the page, its followers, and all who attend library events.

‘Billy Joel,’ soul, and more! Summer Concert Series
Westwoodʼs Annual Summer Concert Series kicks off the 2024 season with the first of seven shows on Thursday, June 13, when residents and neighbors make their way to Veterans Memorial Park for the return of Danny Vʼs 52nd Street Band, a Billy Joel tribute. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Early birds are welcomed and encouraged.

School hosted its annual International Day on May 24, featuring cultures, traditions, and languages from around the world. Itʼs a day when the school comes together to honor the rich cultures
anthem, the pledge of allegiance, and students saying hello or welcome in their native languages.
The classrooms are transformed into cultural hubs, showcasing educational sessions of countries by eighth-graders from Fieldstone Middle School.
In classroom sessions, eighthgraders present on countries from around the world. And no such celebration would be complete

International Day at Memorial School is more than just a celebration: itʼs a testament to our townʼs commitment to respecting diversity around the world.
Parent volunteers played a huge role in bringing the multicultural fun to life where you can see the passion, sense of community, and appreciation of diversity resonated throughout the school.
The day does not happen without the amazing staff at the school, especially Mrs. Dugan, Memorial Elementary School Nurse for all her hard work with checking ingredients and Mr. John, our custodial staff for all his time and efforts with set-up and break-down.

Cap toss at the Cathedral: AHA’s 144th class graduates
The class that entered Holy Angels at the height of the pandemic graduated on May 31 with pomp, circumstance, and a cathartic cap toss.
The Academy recognized the Class of 2024 at a jubilant commencement ceremony and Baccalaureate Mass celebrated by The Most Reverend Michael A. Saporito. Festivities were held at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
AHA President Melinda Hanlon noted the collective accomplishments of the 144th graduating class. Together, they logged 23,607 service hours and received $11 million in scholarships to pursue their undergraduate studies at top-rated colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and Ireland, including the following Ivy League schools: Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, and University of Pennsylvania.
“They have triumphed,” Hanlon said.
Olivia Papp of Hawthorne, who earned the highest cumulative average, was named commencement speaker, the highest honor AHA may confer upon a graduate. Elise Tao of Upper Saddle River graduated Second in Merit, and Sarah David of Cresskill delivered the senior response at her peersʼ request.
Principal Jean Miller introduced Papp as “a natural born leader.” Papp earned AHAʼs Mother Caroline and Nonna Dunphy scholarships. She is a National Merit® Commended Student and recipient of the NJSIAA Scholar Athlete Award.
In addition to playing varsity volleyball, she is a national team
libero with the Sideout Sports Volleyball Club. Papp served as president of the National Honor Society and the Tri-M (music) Honor Society.
She is also a member of the math, French, art, and science honor societies. Her activities included representing AHA as an Angel Ambassador, and singing for the chorus and Seraphima (the a cappella ensemble). She volunteers for the NJ Special Olympics and the La Vida II childcare center, and is a retreat team leader and a Eucharistic Minister. She will attend McGill University.
Papp reflected on the kindness she has experienced from the AHA community, and pondered what people would see if mirrors reflected peopleʼs internal features.
“Much of life itself is a reflection of what weʼre willing to put into it,” she observed. “Weʼre not defined by the things we canʼt
control.” Life, she noted, is more about what one does for others.
Elise Tao earned AHAʼs Mother Caroline and S. Nonna Dunphy scholarships and was a Coca Cola Scholarship semifinalist. She explored her interests in business, politics, and international relations as an award-winning member of DECA and Model UN. She is the founder of Student Mathletes, and was active with Student Council.
In 2022, she represented AHA at the Hugh OʼBrian Youth Leadership Conference, where she became an advocate for Everytown Students Demand Action, an anti-gun violence organization.
Tao is a Commended Student and a member of the National Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta (math) honor society, the Science National Honor Society, the Business NHS, and Rho Kappa (social studies honor society).
She is founder of “Synthesis Publications,” an online literary magazine. Her written submissions have garnered multiple Gold Keys in the regional Scholastic Art & Writing Competition.
In 2023, Tao participated in the 16th Annual Disney Dreamers Academy as one of 100 teens chosen from 25,000 applicants.
She also attended JCamp, the Asian American Journalism Associationʼs national multicultural program. Tao, who is the 2024 Distinguished Young Woman of New Jersey, will soon compete for the national title. This fall, she will enter Harvard. Dean of Academics Carmen Qui ñ ones introduced Sarah David, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and a member of the National Honor Society and the French, science, and social studies honor societies.
David was senior class president and VP of Project Period, which advocates for womenʼs health. She developed and taught online cooking classes for children and online English lessons for Ukrainian students.
She represented AHA at HOBY, and served as president of Angels in Anatomy.
This year, David was one of four Angels selected for the Englewood Hospital Surgical Research Program. She also enriched her education at the Perry Initiative Outreach Program, Columbiaʼs SHAPE Biomedical Engineering program, the Duke Pre-College Chemical Toxicology program, and the NYLF: Medicine and Leadership Forum. An avid soccer player, David was captain of AHAʼs varsity squad and a member of two club teams.
She will continue her education at Vanderbilt.

So refreshing! Veolia Oradell Reservoir Day delights
If you were there, you know: It was a great day at the Oradell Reservoir on Saturday, June 1 as Veolia and the Hackensack Riverkeeper teamed up to host kayaking and canoeing as well as a Youth Fishing Derby on the gorgeous Oradell Reservoir, Haworth.
(Missed it or want more? Veolia invites the public to get out on Lake Tappan on Aug. 3 for another day of kayaking.)
June 1 saw kayaking, canoeing and youth fishing. This is the one day a year this beautiful reservoir is open for the community to canoe and kayak—we spied races, open paddling, the fishing derby, delectables, music, and more fun.
Catch-and-release fishing was permitted from oneʼs own kayak or canoe during the open paddle sessions. Fishing was not permitted from rental boats.
Perhaps the star of the show was Veolia hosting a NJ Fish & Wildlife Youth Fishing Challenge.
June 1 was a designated NJ Free Fishing Day, so freshwater fishing licenses were not required for this
event. Bait was provided with limited rods and reels on loan, courtesy of Hudson River Fishermenʼs Association.
Did you compete? Many tested their mettle in the 5K and 10K paddle race. Awards were given based on vessel type (single kayak, tandem kayak, canoe, specialty outrigger), and menʼs and
womenʼs classes.
Veolia made a point of inviting everybody, including “landlubbers,” saying “Fun, food, and free shoreside childrenʼs activities are
available at the Reservoir Challenge. Friends and spectators are welcome.”
In September 2023, Veolia North America commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Oradell Reservoir Dam, which captured the Hackensack River to quench the thirst of a rapidly expanding region.
Constructed in 1923 to serve a growing population, the dam continues to ensure Northern New Jersey thrives. More than 885,000 residents and businesses depend on the 35 billion gallons of drinking water drawn from the reservoir every year.
“Today we celebrate the Oradell Dam as an engineering feat that has withstood the test of a century, and we also recognize the
people at our company and in our communities who had the foresight to build it,” said Alan Weland, vice president and general manager of Veoliaʼs operations in New Jersey, at those festivities. “Without a reliable source of drinking water, North Jersey would not exist as we know it today.”
Weland was joined by Bergen County Executive James Tedesco, Oradell Mayor Dianne Didio and other state and local officials, who spoke about the importance of the dam to the region. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, Rep. Bill Pascrell, Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise and numerous other elected officials honored the company with proclamations commemorating the damʼs 100 years of service.

Youʼre wise to be skeptical! Thereʼs an overwhelming amount of health advice on the internet today and it can be hard to tell whatʼs credible. To help you sort through the online clutter and locate reliable,
trustworthy health information, here are a few tips to follow, along with some top-rated sites you can turn to with confidence.
Savvy Searching
First, know that Google or Bing is not always the best place to start a search. Youʼll increase your odds of finding reliable health information if you begin with websites run by government agencies (identified by URLs ending in .gov), medical associations (often .org) or academic institutions (.edu).
Commercial websites (usually ending in .com), such as drug or insurance companies who may be trying to sell you their products, are usually not the most trustworthy options. To find out whoʼs sponsoring a site and where the information
came from, click on the About Us tab on the siteʼs home page.
Also note that good health and medical information changes all the time so check the date that information was published to make sure itʼs current.
Some other areas you need be wary of include online symptom checkers and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. While symptom checkers do offer potential diagnoses that could fit your set of symptoms, they are often inaccurate, and tend to err on the side of caution says Ateev Mehrotra, MD, professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School. AI tools, like ChatGPT, can also be wrong or generate false but scientific sounding information.

County kicks off summer movies, concerts in the park
County Executive Jim Tedesco, the Board of County Commissioners, and the County Parks Department announce the return of the Bergen County Movies and Music in the Park Summer Series.
The series features 24 events at four locations across Bergen County beginning on July 10. All concerts and movies are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets for viewing.

Ask the Dentist: Some blood thinners don’t mix with these medications
As the general population ages and as we tend to see an increasing number of patients on blood thinners, knowledge of drug interactions becomes more and more important in everyday practice. Although there are many new so called self-regulating blood thinners in use today, there are still many patients being treated with Coumadin (also known as Warfarin).
In fact, it is still the most commonly prescribed anticoagulant worldwide. It is important for a treating dentist or specialist to be aware of the use of this medication not only to control bleeding when procedures are performed, but also in case the doctor needs to prescribe certain antibiotics or antifungal medica-
tions.
It turns out that both the antibiotic Metronidazole (Flagyl) and the antifungal Fluconazole (Diflucan) can both significantly potentiate or increase the potency of the blood thinner Coumadin, taken by a patient. They do this by blocking the metabolism of the blood thinner thus increasing the blood level of the drug, which could lead to prolonged or internal bleeding.
Since both antibiotics and antifungal medications are commonly used in dentistry, it is always important to be sure your dentist has an updated medical history including all medications taken by you, the patient. With this information, proper choices of medication can be safely and effectively made.

RETIREMENT PLANS CAN BE SIMPLE

If you own a small business (or are selfemployed), there are many retirement plan alternatives available to help you and your employees plan your financial future. One popular option for organizations such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, and nonprofit organizations to consider is the SIMPLE (Savings Incentive Match
Plan for Employees) Individual Retirement Account (IRA).
Unlike some retirement plans, there are specific criteria a business must meet to participate in a SIMPLE IRA plan. Here are the answers to commonly asked questions about this type of retirement plan:
Can any business establish a SIMPLE IRA plan?
Self-employed individuals and employers with fewer than 100 employees may adopt a SIMPLE plan. However, the business must not maintain any other employer-sponsored retirement plan where contri-
butions are made or accrued during the calendar year in which the SIMPLE plan is effective. (This does not apply to plans that cover only union employees who are excluded from the SIMPLE plan.)
What is the deadline for establishing such a plan in order for it to qualify for the 2019 tax year?
The IRS deadline for establishing SIMPLE IRA plans for the current year is Oct. 1. Afterward, plans can only be established for the next tax year. An exception to Oct. 1 exists if the business is a newly established company and has never
sponsored a SIMPLE IRA plan. Which employees are eligible to participate in this type of plan?
An eligible employee is one who has received at least $5,000 in compensation from the employer during any two prior calendar years (does not need to be consecutive years) and who is reasonably expected to receive at least $5,000 compensation during the current year.
In the planʼs initial agreement, the employer is able to reduce the amount of compensation and the number of years required. However, there is no required participation for this plan – eligible employees can choose whether or not they want to participate and contribute.
How much can employees contribute to the plan through salary deferral?
The maximum salary deferral limit to a SIMPLE IRA plan for 2019 cannot exceed $13,000. If an employee is age 50 or older before Dec. 31, then an additional catch-up contribution of $3,000 is permitted.
What are the maximum employer contribution limits for a SIMPLE IRA?
Each year the employer must decide to do either a matching contribution (the lesser of the employeeʼs salary deferral or 3% of the employeeʼs compensation) or non-matching contribution of 2% of an employeeʼs compensation (limited to $280,000 for 2019).
All participants in the plan must be notified of the employerʼs decision.
When must contributions be deposited?
Employee deferrals should be deposited as soon as administratively feasible, but no later than 30 days following the last day of the month in which the amounts would otherwise have been payable to the employee.
These rules also apply to selfemployed individuals. The employer contributions deadline is the due date of the employerʼs tax return, including extensions.
Can there be a vesting scheduled with a SIMPLE IRA?
There is no vesting schedule with this type of plan – both employer and employee are immediately 100% vested.
How are withdrawals from SIMPLE IRAs taxed?
Withdrawals from this type of account are taxed as ordinary income. However, if a participant is younger than age 59? and makes a
withdrawal within the first two years of plan participation, he or she will owe a 25% IRS penalty and ordinary income taxes on the amount withdrawn.
After the initial two years of plan participation, the 25% IRS penalty is reduced to 10% for pre 59? withdrawals. Exceptions to the 10% penalty on traditional IRAs are also exceptions to the 25% penalty for SIMPLE IRAs. Direct transfers to another SIMPLE IRA will not be subject to this penalty. Can the assets in a SIMPLE IRA be rolled over?
Participants are able to roll over funds from one SIMPLE plan to another at any time. After two years of participation, employees may roll assets to a traditional or SEP IRA without tax penalties.
As with any investment alternative, you should check with your Financial Advisor to evaluate the best option for your financial situation.

THEBILLOF RIGHTS means nothing to me—and that is why it means everything For most teenagers, including myself, the Bill of Rights is simply a topic grazed over in U.S. History. But it is so much more than that. It is the liberties that I take for granted every single day, liberties rooted so deeply into the fabric of American life that many others take them for granted, too. Though we may not exercise all our liberties day-to-day, they are incessant—it is in their absence that we would be able to comprehend the significance of the Bill of Rights and the drastic effects it has on our lives.
The First Amendment, allow-
ing me to voice my diverse opinions; the Fourth, protecting my right to close the doors around me; or the Seventh, protecting my innocence. Any of the first Ten Amendments may sit unrecognized right under our noses, but it is only proof of our Founding Fathersʼsuccess at creating a country where liberties are the oxygen of American lungs — underlying and constant.
The Bill of Rights is not only the foundation of the country in which I live, but the roots that brought me here in the first place. I had never before questioned why my grandparents had brought my mother from Korea to America at a young age. Why America? It was for the reasons so many flood to this country: to take refuge in freedom and liberty. They had given her the same luxury that I now have: to take the Bill of Rights for granted. Ask most teenagers, and their response will be the same: The Bill of Rights means nothing to me. However, to live in a country where we do not need to question our basic human rights, means everything.

RICHARD “DICK” CELLA graduated from Westwood High School in 1962. He was an excellent two-sport athlete who played four years of varsity baseball and three years of varsity basketball.
During that time he earned multiple All-League honors and AllCounty mentions.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 after graduating from Ithaca College. He worked as a carpenter before returning to teach and coach at his alma mater (succeeding coach Bob Taber).
He taught at Westwood from 1972 until his retirement, in 2008.

Although the 1980 season was Dickʼs first year as varsity baseball coach at Westwood, his familiarity, teaching, and tutelage was a bond and relationship that began in 1971. That year was Dickʼs first year as a physical education instructor. He b egan relationships that developed and improved the lives of all the young students he encountered.

Along the way he developed the most successful athletic team in Westwood Regional High School history. Everyone who saw Mr. Cella engaging and observing all of his developing students knew his intense observation and behavioral analysis.
In retrospect he was the most
important contribution to the genuine and overall productivity of the young students within the Westwood Regional school system at an extremely and challenging time. As the Borough of Westwood and the Township of Washington continued exceptional growth in a safe suburan community with ooperation between two neighboring towns. At that time t hat was quite unique and admirable.
As the population increased and the need for new educational facilities the state of the art Brookside School was constructed in a swift, efficient, and cooperative effort of both towns.
This new Brookside School was a great piece of community progress but it was a difficult transition for the southeastern third
graders from Westwood and Township of Washington. There were so many young kids who missed their best friends and favorite teachers.
Dick was just starting out on his educational career in 1971. He spent time at all of the grammar schools of Westwood and the Township of Washington. He was a magnet that drew kids together.
Dick just turned 80 years old and everyone who has been touched by his life still cares about him and the memories.
As a dedicated educator the r espect and admiration from your students is the most gratifying award you can hope for.
Dick Cella has that great award. It was expected.
Dickʼs wife, Ana, organized the party as a successful surprise. She had listened to her husband about “wanting to see his boys.”

I will say that I was a member of his first class of students and he noticed and cultivated caring and protective instincts. By the time I was in sixth grade at Brookside School his influence and confidence in my made me the captain of the safety patrol, milk monitor, leader of the fire drills for younger kids, and the music monitor —that meant I had to wheel the piano around from class to class for music instruction.”

THEACTION was Monday, June 3 at Shutte Field in Wanaque: The eight-seed Pascack Valley Panthers baseball team defeated the Passaic County champion seven-seed Lakeland Regional High School Lancers, 4-0, in the North Jersey Section 1, Group 2 Championship game.
The road to the championship started with wins over nine-seed Parsippany Hills in the first round, Top seed Glen Rock in the quarterfinals and five-seed Indian Hills in the semifinals.
Pascack Valley head coach William Lynch told Pascack Press, “No matter where youʼre seeded you have to win four games. I told the team that todayʼs game is no different than the game before.”
This is the Panthersʼfirst win as a Group 2 team. They joined this group last year. Prior to that, they were a Group 3 team where they won in 2017 and 2021.
They moved on to beat Caldwell, 6-2, in the State Group 2 Championship game. They were down 2-0 after the first inning. Then scored 3 in the second, 2 in the third and 1 in the fourth. 23-8, they face Governor Livingston in the State Group 2 Final at Veterans Park, Hamilton, on Saturday at 1 p.m.

ON JUNE 5, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) released the following statement on the Congestion Tax:
“After a five year fight, New York appears to have done right by hardworking Jersey families and backed off their outrageous Congestion Tax.
“Five years ago, I said that we would fight for Jersey families until the very end, and that's exactly what we did. We threw the kitchen sink at New York — and then some — and got it done. Hawks Football & Cheer registering
In a tradition spanning more than four decades, the Hillsdale Hawks Football and Cheer program continues to offer opportunities for young athletes in grades 1–8. Founded on a commitment to community engagement and athletic development, the program welcomes residents from Hillsdale, Montvale, and Woodcliff Lake to join its ranks.
With registration open until June 30, families are encouraged to enroll their children for a season filled with excitement and camaraderie. Football enthusiasts can anticipate action-packed Saturdays from the first week of September through mid-November, as teams take to the field in spirited competition.
The program provides an immersive tackle football experience. Pre-season practices kick off in mid-August, priming players for the challenges and triumphs of the upcoming season.
Cheerleaders will find themselves at the heart of the action, lending their support and enthusiasm to the teams. Mandatory cheer training sessions are scheduled for Aug. 12–15, setting the stage for dynamic performances throughout the season. Regular practices, held twice a week starting Aug. 20 ensure that cheerleaders are ready to energize the crowds with their routines.

Nominations for Governor’s Enviro Excellence Awards
The Murphy Administration invites the public to submit nominations for the 25th Governorʼs E nvironmental Excellence Awards, the stateʼs foremost environmental awards program that honors the accomplishments of individuals, businesses, organizations, and communities to protect New Jerseyʼs air, land, water and natural resources.
The DEP is accepting nominations earlier and for a longer period of time than in past years.
Those interested can find the eligibility requirements and submit their nomination online by Sept. 4. The extended timeframe for submissions will allow the public more time to consider applying, especially teachers and students reflecting upon their accomplish-
ments during the last few weeks of the school year.
“The stateʼs champions in environmental protection are setting an example. From business executives to high school students, a diverse group of leaders are carving a path for others to follow and improve upon,” said Commissioner Shawn LaTourette. “Submit your nomination to help us recognize those dedicated to preserving the s tateʼs natural landscape, addressing climate change and protecting the environment we share.”
Award nominations will be accepted in nine categories: Climate; Clean Air; Watershed Management and Water Resources; Healthy Ecosystems and Habi-
tats; Healthy Communities; Sustainability; Environmental Just ice; Environmental Educator; and James J. Florio Emerging Environmental Leader.
The James J. Florio Emerging Environmental Leader award will be the only award category open exclusively to New Jersey residents who are less than 24 years old. Students are encouraged to apply, and teachers may nominate any student who has shown exceptional leadership with environmental issues.
Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria: •addressing the needs of New Jersey; •leadership and innovation; education, outreach and impact on the community; and

Katherine Prevedel, 95, of Emerson, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024. She is survived by her son Raymond Prevedel and his wife, Ellen; son Robert Prevedel; daughter Julie Hall; sister, Amelia Massaia; son-in-law Robert Pavese; grandchildren Lisa Prevedel, Kimberly Silsby and her husband, Ian; Michelle Ciccarelli and her husband, Brent; Robert Pavese and his wife, Rebecca; Christina Finley and her husband, Keith; Marc Hall and his wife, Cari; and six great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph, daughter Rosaly Pavese, and brother Ludwig Prebilich.
The family received guests at Becker Funeral Home, Westwood on Thursday, June 6. A Mass celebrating Katherineʼs life and faith was held at R.C. Church of the Assumption in Emerson. Interment at Westwood Cemetery in Westwood. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in Katherineʼs name to St. Jude Childrenʼs Research Hospital at stjude.org/donate.
Marie DeSantis VISCO
Marie DeSantis Visco, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion. Born in Jersey City on June 14, 1933 (Flag Day) to the late Frank and Rosemary DeSantis, Marie is also predeceased by her younger brother Frank (“Sonny”). Born during the Great Depression, Marie grew up with very modest means in West New York, N.J., where she attended Public School #1 and Memorial High School. It was during these formative years that she met the love of her life, Louis.
Marie absolutely loved school and was a model student. She loves to tell the story of how she was number one in her class (followed by Louis at number two)!
Marie and Louis were married on June 23, 1956, after his service in the U.S. Navy. The couple settled in an apartment on Adam Street for five years while Louis attended Jersey
filled with friendly competition and camaraderie. From individual play to team events, including two-player and four-player formats, thereʼs something for all.

from single digits to upper ranges. Club Championships and Age Group Championships feature multiple flights, ensuring fair play and excitement for all members.

City State Teacher College, and it was during this time that their family began to grow with the arrival of their children Leona, Matthew (spouse Lisa), and Mark (spouse Dee).
After five years, the family moved to Hillsdale, where Marie would make a lasting impact on the Pascack Valley School District over the next 25 years. Starting at the switchboard, Marie worked her way up to becoming the superintendentʼs executive assistant, where she showcased her dedication, hard work, and intelligence.
During this time she also pursued higher education, completing an associate degree from Bergen County Community College.
Marieʼs greatest joy in life was her family—she showered them with love, wisdom, and support.
In addition to her three children, she is survived by seven grandchildren: Jason (spouse Neala), Lauren (spouse Ruz), Eric (spouse Brigid), Steven (spouse Jonathan), Sabrina (fiance Rich), Ryan, and Luke; and six great-grandchildren: Tessa, Sophia, Maz, Conner, Kam, and Owen.
Marie was deeply involved in all of her grandchildrenʼs lives, attending every sporting event, concert, and dance show as well as taking them on trips across the country She had boundless energy and a zest for life that was inspiring, enjoying skiing, scuba diving, and parasailing.
Throughout her life, she traveled extensively and had many adventures, including rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia.
Marie even famously achieved a hole-in-one while golfing at the Ocean Pines Golf Club!
Marie also loved the simple pleasures in life, like spending time at the pool and brunch at the Ocean Pines Yacht Club. She was a voracious reader, particularly enjoying history and biographical novels. She enjoyed riding a bike, walking, and camping, and always found joy in the great outdoors, visiting many of the National Parks.
Marie had an extremely playful and affectionate personality. She never missed an opportunity to get on her hands and knees and play with little kids, even helping her great-grandchildren learn to walk.
Marie was extremely generous with her affection, giving frequent hugs to loved ones and strangers alike. She brightened any room she was in and was rarely without a smile and a positive attitude. If you asked her how she was doing she would respond along the lines of
“Iʼm a lucky dog,” “Iʼve never been better,” or “I am spoiled rotten.”
Marie appreciated the many blessings in her life and truly never took a single day for granted. She was a shining example of how to live life to the fullest, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and adventurous spirit will continue to inspire for generations to come.
A viewing was held on Wednesday, June 5 at the Becker Funeral Home in Westwood. A celebration of life was held at St. Pius Catholic Church in Old Tappan on Thursday, June 6. Burial at BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, North Hanover Township. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
George TUCKER
George Tucker, 75, of Westwood, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. Beloved husband to Diane Tucker (deceased 2016). Devoted father to Shaun Tucker and his wife, Christina Tucker. Born in Jersey City, he grew up in Paramus, later moving to the Township of Washington. George was a dedicated school bus driver and manager for many years, with Scholastic Bus Co. George loved traveling and spending time with his family. He served proudly in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

Venus Tirol GARDE
Venus Tirol Garde passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024. Her final moments were spent peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, in Emerson.
She was born to the late Arnulfo and Gliceria Tirol, August 19, 1934 in Tangalan, Aklan, Philippines. Venus graduated from Northwestern Visayan College High School in 1952 and received her B.S. in pharmacy from the University of St. Augustine in 1957. She then received her degree in cytotechnology from Temple University, Philadelphia in 1964.
Venus worked as a cytologist for
GHIN app. The season concludes with the annual Business Dinner Meeting at Madeleineʼs P etit Paris in Northvale, featuring awards, officer elections, and plans.

over 30 years and as a manager of cytology at Corning Clinical Laboratories (formerly MetPath) for 20 years.
She enjoyed playing the piano, singing, and watching baseball. Venus was a big fan of the New York Yankees and always enjoyed watching the games. She also enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City.
Known for her kindness, generosity, and loving nature, Venus will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Venusʼfamily asks that she be remembered not for the sadness of her passing but rather, in life, for the joy she brought to others.
She is predeceased by her husband, Ronaldo Garde, and is survived by two children, Desiree Garde-Saunders of Emerson and Arvee Garde of Astoria, N.Y. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Devyn, Keegan, Mikey, and Cameryn, and her beloved dog, Little.
