Bike riding Risk Assessment

Please note activity specific Risk Assessments are in addition to general risk assessment.

- Ensure all medical conditions are known and identified prior to departure.

- Leaders to ensure all required medications are taken and easily accessible before and during activity.

- Ensure modifications are made for those participants requiring assistance.

- Ensure emergency evacuation locations are well known prior to departure.

- Leaders have camp, PARKS Vic Point Nepean and emergency numbers in their phone prior to departure.

- Leaders to ensure the first aid kit is fully stocked and taken on all rides.

- Leader ensures that morning and afternoon tea snacks accommodates all recorded dietaries of participants.

Slips/Trips/Falls

- Closed toed and stable footwear to be worn on all bike rides and checked prior to departure.

- Appropriate clothing for conditions must be worn eg. warm clothing if it’s cold.

- Leaders to check participants are prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear.

- Clothing to not be baggy to reduce likelihood of entanglement.

- Leader to ride at front and back of group at all times

- Leader to identify hazards and make participants aware of upcoming hazards. Modify route if required.

- Gradual introduction to bike riding to be undertaken. Skills to be taught and gradually progressed appropriate to age group and skill level.

- Journey based bike riding for those that have undertaken and competently completed skills based lesson.

- Group to be managed when riding based on skill level with adequate spacing, communication, turning & signals.

- Comms are charged and carried with leaders

- Leaders to ride at the front and back of the group at all times.

- Leaders receive and clearly understand the map prior to departure if going off site.

- Leaders to understand emergency procedures, alternative routes, vehicle access and evacuation locations.

- Leaders have camp numbers in their phone prior to departure.

- Ensure leaders are aware and identify any medical conditions prior to departure.

- PARKS Vic to be notified of activities with the Point Nepean National Park.

- Leaders to have PARKS Vic Point Nepean numbers available during the activity.

- Participants were briefed on the lost person procedure and how to respond.

- Regular head counts conducted throughout activity.

- If staying in close proximity to bikes, then boundaries must be clearly identified.

- Leaders to ensure they have a charged mobile phone with available credit. Phone must have camp phone numbers in it.

- Emergency numbers and PARKS & Wildlife numbers to be available to leaders.

- Bikes to be checked that they are in safe working order prior to use including tyres, brakes, gears, connections and frame.

- Any faulty bikes to be moved from service, clearly labelled and reported.

- Bikes are serviced annually.

- Leaders must know how to do basic bike repairs and carry a bike repair kit for any basic repairs.

- Helmets that are dropped or are involved with a crash must be retired from service immediately.

- Helmets are to be stored as per manufacturer's recommendations.

- Helmets with damage are not to be repaired, instead retired from service.

- Fluro Vests to be worn by everyone at all times during the bike ride.

- Vests are to be fitted correctly to minimise entanglement.

- Vests that have low visibility or are damaged or worn must be retired from service immediately and reported to the recreation coordinator.

First Aid Kit to be checked prior to activities.

- First Aid kit to be taken to all bike riding activities. For groups over 20, Two first aid kits are to be taken.

- Modify route if required to avoid potential risks.

- Wildlife contact numbers to be accessible if required for any injured animals.

- When riding, leader to continually monitor for potential wildlife risks. Make amendments to the route where possible.

Everyone has full water bottles prior to departure. - On days where temperatures exceed 30 degrees celsius, cold water to be taken to half way point. - Leader to carry spare water with

them at all times.

- Locations of water to be identified on the map available to leaders .

- Days that exceed 35 degrees celsius must have bike riding alternatives.

- Regular breaks are to be implemented along the ride.

- Rides exceeding 1.5 hours must ensure they have a minimum of 2 water bottles.

- Ensure weather reports are read prior to activity. If lightning is predicted then alternative activity at camp will be provided.

- In the event that lightning and or thunder occurs whilst on the bike, then the group is to seek immediate shelter under nearest secure buildings such as quarantine station.

- Follow Flash Bang 30:30 rule for procedures on thunder and lightning.

- Ensure safety briefs and instructions are given in the shade.

- Modifications or cancellations to activity are made in days of extreme temperatures.

- Participants regularly drink water throughout session.

- Leader to run activity information in a warm, sheltered environment on days of cold weather.

- Ensure participants are adequately dressed for the weather prior to activity commencing.

- Leaders to regularly monitor participants throughout the activity.
