Telling the best stories
Spring 2019
Welcome Magic is in the air this Spring at The Berry Theatre as we celebrate the beginning of a new year with another fabulous line-up of family theatre, comedy, film and live music! As always, The Berry Theatre is the place to be this February half-term as we bring you a marvellous magic show performed by puppets in Out of the Hat as well as the award-winning Margo and Mr. Whatsit – a cautionary tale about what happens when your two imaginary friends don’t quite get along. There’s also an extra special treat for Hedge End residents who can get their hands on free tickets for selected shows and films across the week but be quick – when they’re gone, they’re gone! There’s more conjuring tricks and illusions as Easter arrives with the utterly spiffing and spectacular Morgan & West returning to our stage, but not before our senior youth theatre invite us to adventure in the jungle with their visually stunning production of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. We’re also delighted to welcome back acclaimed children’s book illustrator Nick Sharratt who will be presenting a special, royal-themed draw-along for children and adults alike.
Spring evenings will be filled with timeless music and laughter with the world-famous Ronnie Scott and his All Stars celebrating 60 years of great jazz music at their Soho home and we transport you back to 1954 with three classic episodes of Hancock’s Half Hour, faithfully reproduced by the Apollo Theatre Company. Then to top off our Spring season, we have the perfect after-dinner speaker in actor, comedian and master raconteur, Gyles Brandreth. With all of that to come plus four huge productions streamed from theatres across the country, a busy programme of great films with sing-a-longs too and six showcases of talent from our local community, we can’t wait to see you at The Berry Theatre soon! Sacha Lee Artistic Director theberrytheatre theberrytheatre theberrytheatre The Berry Theatre is managed under agency by Eastleigh Borough Council.

The Berry Youth Theatre presents
The Jungle Book
By Rudyard Kipling, adapted by Neil Duffield
Remember, the strength of the wolf is the pack. Hidden under a canopy of green leaves, a child swings from branches and stumbles through soil paths. This man-cub, raised by wolves, tries to outrun the dangerous wrath of man’s red fire. On his journey, young Mowgli learns the laws of the jungle from a bumbling bear and is sought after by the great Shere Khan. With the lives of all creatures at stake, this is the story of how our differences really just bring people (and animals!) closer together. This Spring, as the plants come into bloom, join us on an adventure through twisting twines and terrific trees, as young Mowgli learns the importance of family. Prepare for beautiful visuals and a moving contemporary score as we invite you into the jungle!

The King and I: From the London Palladium
National Theatre Live presents
The multi-award winning and critically acclaimed Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King And I comes to cinemas in this unmissable event recorded live from London’s iconic Palladium. Reprising her Tony Award-winning role, ‘Broadway musical’s undisputed Queen’ (The Sunday Times) Kelli O’Hara (Anna) takes to the stage alongside Tony and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (The King) in a “powerhouse” (The Times) performance. Also returning to her Tony Award winning role as Lady Thiang is Ruthie Ann Miles. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

Simon Russell Beale plays William Shakespeare’s Richard II, broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London. This visceral new production about the limits of power will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre. Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the King’s divine right to rule.

Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo play Shakespeare’s famous fated couple in his great tragedy of politics, passion and power.
Come into the forest; dare to change your state of mind.
Caesar and his assassins are dead. General Mark Antony now rules alongside his fellow defenders of Rome. But at the fringes of a war-torn empire the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and Mark Antony have fallen fiercely in love. In a tragic fight between devotion and duty, obsession becomes a catalyst for war. Director Simon Godwin returns to National Theatre Live screens with this hotly anticipated production, following broadcasts of Twelfth Night, Man and Superman and The Beaux’ Stratagem.
Rosalind is banished, wrestling with her heart and her head. With her cousin by her side, she journeys to a world of exile where barriers are broken down and all can discover their deeper selves. Director Kimberley Sykes (Dido, Queen of Carthage) directs a riotous, exhilarating version of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy.
