77th Annual International Convention & Competition Program
Mission Statement
Elevating
Inspiring and empowering voices to joyfully harmonize the world. Sweet Adelines International
Vision Statement
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
Dear Sweet Adelines International,
On behalf of the City of Columbus, I want to extend a warm welcome and a heartfelt thank you for being here. It’s an honor to host your convention and competition for the first time, especially as it coincides with Sweet Adelines International’s milestone 80th birthday. Your community represents countries from around the world. As the 15th largest city in the U.S., and one that thrives on diversity, creativity and connection, Columbus is the perfect stage for your week of education, performance and competition.
Columbus has a reputation as one of the country’s best undiscovered music cities. Twenty One Pilots, Caamp, O.A.R., Rascal Flatts, Willie Phoenix, Dwight Yoakam and Bobby Floyd are just some of the musicians who got their start here. Before they were household names, they played on stages in Columbus, from outdoor venues to dive bars and from sold-out arenas to indie record stores.
Over the next few days, we hope you feel that same creative energy and settle into a community that feels like a home away from home. Our walkable downtown makes it easy to explore a city AFAR recently named one of the Best Places to Travel in 2025. That recognition builds on recent national attention, including Glamour’s “25 Best Solo Trips for Women” and USA Today 10Best’s “Best U.S. Destinations to Visit This Fall.”
We know your schedules are full, but we hope you have a chance to explore the city. Just minutes from the convention center, you will find the charming, brick-lined streets of German Village, as well as the creativity, public art and nationally acclaimed food scene in the Short North Arts District.
Thank you again for being here. We are proud to be part of this milestone and excited to welcome you back when the convention returns in October 2026.
Sincerely,
Andrew J. Ginther Mayor
Welcome to Columbus
Welcome to the Sweet Adelines International 2025 Convention and Competition — a week filled with education, entertainment, and excitement. Columbus is set to shine even brighter as we take the stage this week!
There is something magical about convention week—a time when singers from near and far come together to create harmony, celebrate friendship, and share in the joy of music. This year, Columbus provides a backdrop of autumn colors, with landscapes blazing in vibrant reds, golds, and oranges, a reminder that beauty and wonder can be found in every moment. Years ago, when we lived in Ohio, we had a magnificent sugar maple in our backyard. Each leaf was stunning on its own, but together they created a glow that seemed to light up the whole yard. In much the same way, each of us brings our own talents, voices, and spirit to this convention, creating a vibrant mosaic of sound, energy, and joy.
This week promises exciting experiences all around. We will be moved by incredible performances, challenged and uplifted by top-notch education, and inspired by the generosity and dedication of fellow members. Whether this is your first convention or your fiftieth, there is magic to be found at every turn.
Our time together at convention is fleeting, but the memories we create—the friendships we deepen, the music we make, the inspiration we carry home—will last far beyond these few days. I encourage you to fully immerse yourself in every moment, to embrace the sights, the sounds, and the connections that make us Sweet Adelines.
In harmony,
Mary Rhea International President

It's The Music That Brings Us Together
Words,
From the Composer/Arranger
This song was written shortly after “shelter-in-place” for COVID-19 started. As with many barbershop ensembles, my chorus had just started virtual rehearsals and it was inspiring to see how many barbershoppers still wanted to find ways to rehearse, learn more, talk about music, and most importantly, stay connected to all of our barbershop friends. It’s easy for me to get emotional about the impact barbershop has had on my life, but with the craziness of everyday life, we don’t always get a lot of opportunities to remember WHY barbershop is so important in our lives. Sharing a song or a great tag with friends is one thing that made us all go nuts for barbershop in the first place. Even when we're not able to sing together, it's incredibly inspiring and helps us remember WHY when so many still do so much to virtually get together with the friends that make music so meaningful to all of us.
Performance Notes
1) This key (F) should work well for female barbershop ensembles, but feel free to pitch it up or down if that better fits your particular ensemble’s vocal strengths. This arrangement is also available in A b (TTBB for female voices) and C (SATB for mixed voices).
2) There are optional notes shown in measures 17 (bass), 18 (bari), and 20 (bass). These work just fine, and may be considerations for your ensemble depending upon the voices and the key you choose.
3) The song starts with a simple message: “it’s the music that brings us together,” and continues to tell the story of what music means to us. From sweet melodies to grand harmonies, music is the emotional fire that fuels our souls. Music is passion, music helps us through good times and bad times, and when our troubles might be especially great, music is there to help ease the burden. The message starts simply, grows more emotional, passionate, and grand, and then comes back to the simple thought that “it’s the music that brings us together” . . . but it’s the friends we share music with that matter the most and that make each day special.
Special thanks to track producers Tony De Rosa and Michaela Johnston for donating their time and talents to create learning tracks for this arrangement. All three versions are available free of charge at shop.barbershop.org and you can also find the TTBB and SATB at www.advocals.com (Tony) and the SSAA at www.officialjohnstonmusic.com (Michaela).
