There’s ‘snow place’ like Ulverston for Christmas

Ulverston celebrates Christmas in style this year on the weekend of December 5th and 6th with a giant walk-in snow globe to create an unforgettable festive atmosphere and photos to take away.

When Taste Cumbria Christmas in Ulverston comes to town there will also be dozens of food and gift stalls, free kids’ craft activities, festive music, a snow machine, Santa Claus’ grotto in the Market Hall on Sunday, and of course the town’s unique selection of stores perfect for Christmas shopping. Ulverston also has its own Christmas Treasure Trail with a prize of £250 for the lucky winner who can unravel the clues in more than 50 shops and businesses around the town. The Taste Cumbria event is funded by the Ulverston Business Improvement District with support from South Lakeland District Council, and Ulverston Town Council.

To continue the Christmas spirit there will be a festive music event at the Cross in Market Street on the afternoon of Saturday, December 12th between 3.00pm and 6.00pm with live performances, donkey rides, and free mince pies. A final festive feelgood factor for shoppers is free parking in all of the town centre car parks on Sundays throughout December.

8

BID management board chairman Chris Nelson explains: “Ulverston always has a special atmosphere at Christmas sparked by the Dickensian Festival and we have begun working with the town’s traders to ensure Ulverston is on everyone’s Christmas list, this year and in the future.”

How much does it cost to make a Lasting Power of Attorney?

The cost of preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney can vary depending on your circumstances and requirements. Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director Some people choose to Photo: Lorraine Oates Photography appoint a Solicitor or legal professional to prepare their Lasting Powers of Attorney. This option is convenient and will ensure that your Lasting Powers of Attorney are drafted correctly, however the Solicitor or legal professional will charge you for their time and expertise. The cost of appointing a professional to draft your Lasting Powers of Attorney varies greatly and will depend on what you instruct them to do on your behalf. Most Solicitors and legal professionals charge a fixed fee for this type of work and should be able to give you a quotation for the work up front. Alternatively some people are content to prepare their Lasting Powers of Attorney themselves. You can do this simply by downloading the forms from www.gov.uk or by using the Lasting Power of Attorney service to complete the forms online. Completing the forms yourself will save the cost of appointing a Solicitor or legal professional to prepare the forms for you. However the more complex parts of the Lasting Power of Attorney forms recommend you obtain legal advice. In addition to the costs associated with preparing your Lasting Power of Attorney documents you may also have to pay a registration fee to the Office of the Public Guardian. All Lasting Powers of Attorney must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can be used. Currently the Office of the Public Guardian charges a registration fee of £110.00 per document, so if you have both types of Lasting Power of

Attorney the registration fees would be £220.00. If the person making the Lasting Power of Attorney (known as the Donor) is in receipt of certain means-tested state benefits they may apply for an exemption of the Office of the Public Guardian’s registration fees. If the Donor receives Universal Credit or has a gross annual income of less than £12,000.00 they may apply for a 50% remission of the Office of the Public Guardian’s registration fees. Lakes Legal Limited specialise in the provision of Lasting Powers of Attorney and are happy to answer any queries you may have. If you have any questions about your personal legal affairs please feel free to contact Hannah Bell using the below telephone number or by e-mail: Hannah@lakeslegallimited.co.uk. Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive Lasting Power of Attorney service so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the very beginning. No hidden costs and No VAT! The first known use of the term “shopping” is recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary … “Ladies are said to go a shopping, when, in the forenoon, sick of themselves, they order the coach and drive from shop to shop” ‘The Thoughtful Dresser’ Linda Grant.

Now, 200 years of successful retailing later, shopping, a liberating form of escape designed to cure the afternoon malaise and fulfil unfulfillable dreams, remains as much a leisure activity as it did back then. However, it doesn’t all happen on the great British high street. Many choose to shop at an out of town shopping centre with free parking or they shop online where parking occurs on the couch. All this doesn’t bode well for the good old shops and is why many forewarn that the high street is on the verge of extinction. Interestingly, before this revolutionary concept of shopping emerged, the goods or the people that made them came to the house in remarkable similarity to how they do in 2015. Women with a disposable income shopped from tailors, seamstresses or pedlars who sold from door to door much like our 21st century gal, who having made her purchase on her mobile phone receives it from the postman.

So is the lifecycle of our shopping experience soon to come full circle? Is the joy that we earned from our 18th century emancipated sisters, of being able to leave the house to soothe our troubled souls in retail therapy, soon to become just another part of history?

I hope not, for as much as I enjoy the efficiency and ease of a simple click and what is obscure and unavailable in Cumbria is released from deepest Shropshire, I really don’t want our shops to just become museums. When I’m sick of myself in the forenoon, I still want to be able to glide the glittering aisles, feast my eyes on shoes and handbags and jewels, be able to touch the fabric, feel the texture and enjoy the colour, and most of all not have to send it back in the post if it doesn’t fit. Call me old fashioned but its great to have a crack with a smiling or cheeky assistant, stop for a coffee and a manicure and take home a treasure wrapped up like a gift.

Well the good news is that not all the news about shops is bad. At the time of writing, of Ulverston’s 240 shops there are only 4 vacant and there is a wealth of goods and services on offer from resilient, local entrepreneurs who are very determined to keep the shopping experience alive on the cobbled streets. If you take a stroll to the lower end of Market Street you will find that, for the first time in an age, all the shops at that end are open for business and, not only that, but they are all independently owned, exciting shops with a unique offering of high quality products. At the south end of Market street you can buy books (new and second hand), upcylcled furniture, wool, childrens clothes and toys, luxury stationery, quality women’s

12

and men’s wear, chocolate, fresh fish, meat, cheese and bread. You can also receive alternative medical advice, have your nails done, get a tattoo, buy a fresh sandwich and go out for lunch. Most importantly there is a thriving community of shopkeepers ready to cheer you on so if you do find yourself sick of yourself in the forenoon and you do have a coach to call upon, you could in fact drive from shop to shop!
