PROGRAMME ISSUE NO.35 FILM DINING THEATRE BALLET OPERA ART KIDS SPECIAL EVENTS FREE PARKING THE PICTURE HOUSE, HIGH STREET, UCKFIELD
One of the first lessons I was taught as a young projectionist was that our job was to be invisible, if you noticed us, either we weren’t doing our job well or something had gone wrong. I’m going back to the late 1970s when the biggest difference was films were projected on 35mm and in Uckfield we were still running dual projection that meant changing from one projector to another about four or five times during a feature. We were also one of the last cinemas to use carbon arc lamps to illuminate the screen. Two charged carbon rods that the projectionist touched together and a flame burnt between them at high intensity.
So, with all the rewinding, re-lacing the projector and putting in new carbon rods it was a skilled and busy job. Throughout the ‘70s most cinemas had converted to long playing systems that ran the whole film in one go with a xenon lamp. I was never sure why my dad held on so long to dual projectors but I am glad he did because what I learnt from showing films the hard way was how important presentation is, the sound, the picture. This made me pretty obsessive about getting the tech absolutely right. Things are very different now, the projectionist doesn’t really exist, and digital cinema has opened up a host of possibilities, multiple screens, tighter programme timing, and the ability to show live theatre and opera from around the world.
But the fundamentals remain the same. A nice bright, sharp picture, with great sound in a comfortable environment. I have invested greatly in sound and picture technology over the years because apart from anything else, I can’t bear not to. High resolution 4K projectors, top drawer bi-amped speaker systems*, and I love it. However, a lot of that tech you probably don’t even notice, at least I hope not because that means I’m doing my job properly.
*ask me if you see me, I’ll explain.
