DO MORE BE MORE Spring II & Summer 2011 Program Guide

WALLINGFORD FAMILY YMCA

WELCOME A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO The Wallingford Family YMCA is truly blessed and excited to celebrate another year of building strong kids, strong families and strong communities!

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT The Wallingford Family YMCA continued to lead the community as the largest child care provider in town by serving over 500 children per day! Wallingford Family YMCA Dolphins Swim Teamâ€&#x;s enrollment is now at 107 creating a need for the team to use Sheehan High School pool due to space constraints at the YMCA. In 2010, Camp Ulbrich had one of its best seasons increasing participation by over 11% .

FOR HEALTHY LIVING The Wallingford Family YMCA in harmony with community leaders further developed its Activate Wallingford initiative to help reduce the epidemic of Childhood Obesity! The YMCA/Fishbein Community Day Road Race had its best year with over 475 youth and adults participating in this healthy, community-spirited activity. Silver Sneakers members continued to grow to over 106 strong with programs on land and in the water. Fit to Go continued to grow and develop by serving close to 100 Middle School students offering nutrition, exercise and healthy lifestyles.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY No one is turned away for the inability to pay. Scholarships, subsidies, and outreach provide critical access to low-income families. We provided over $100,000 in assistance to 387 children, youth and families. This represents 4.6% of total expenses. In order to help with those subsidies our Strong Kids Campaign raised an all time high of $81,338 in 2010 through community and corporate giving! The YMCAâ€&#x;s Upward Bound program for at-risk Middle School students served close to 100 students throughout the year at the YMCA and Rotary/YMCA Teen Center! Over the coming years, the YMCA is reviewing an aggressive revitalization and renewal plan to increase and expand the programs and services available to Wallingford kids, families and communities by: Expanding our capacity to reach underserved populations. Revitalizing and/or replacing YMCA facilities that have served us well, but are not capable of meeting the challenges that the community will face in the 21st century and beyond! I thank you for volunteering, supporting, joining or just being a part of this great organization. We look forward to a safe and successful new year of offering expanded programs and services to the Greater Wallingford Community. Enjoy a safe and healthy new year,

SEAN DOHERTY Executive Director

WHY THE Y? WHAT MAKES THE WALLINGFORD YMCA DIFFERENT? COMMUNITY COMMITMENT What sets the YMCA apart is our ongoing commitment to the community. The Wallingford Family YMCA doesn‟t just offer programs: it changes lives, builds families, and reaches out to neighbors in need. Just last year, we gave out over $100,000 to help families and youth pay for camp, childcare, teen social services and more. We are committed to turning no one away for financial reasons. In partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and in collaboration with the Wallingford Department of Parks and Recreation and a number of community partners, we are working to address the alarming health and obesity crisis of our youth by targeting environmental and policy level changes. In partnership with United Way of Meriden/Wallingford, we provide enhanced reading curriculum to kids, free fully-staffed Saturday nights at the Y for faith groups, fitness and nutrition programs for middle school kids at risk, learn to swim programs and much more. We work closely with the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Town Celebrations Committee to offer the Fishbein YMCA Community Day Road Race, which leads into the community‟s Family Day celebration with music, food and fun activities for all. We also sponsor the Wallingford Family YMCA/Wint Filipek Sr. Tennis Tournament which has grown to represent the largest tennis tournament in New England with over 500 entries last year. All proceeds from this event go to support kids and families who need our help and to offer college scholarships for local athletes.

VALUE DRIVEN LEADERSHIP The YMCA is a not for profit, charitable organization with a mission to make a difference in our community. Our core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are expected in our staff and cultivated throughout the YMCA. Our mission is to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. The YMCA feels different because its purpose is different, its people are different and its values are different.

WHY THE NEW LOOK? You’ll start to notice-or may have already noticed-that the Y is changing. You’ll notice a new logo, new colors and a different approach to how we share information with you. We are simplifying how we describe the programs we do offer so it is apparent that everything we do is designed to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve health and well-being, and motivate people to support their neighbors and the larger community

Cycling

Krav Maga

Come check out our NEW Schwinn Indoor Cycling Bikes! We offer 14 Cycling Classes, from early morning through evening.

EASY TO LEARN – REALISTIC -- PRACTICAL Do you want to get into better physical condition? Do you want to learn how to defend yourself from a physical attack? Krav Maga (Hebrew for “contact combat”) is one of the best self-defense systems available to civilians today. It is the same system taught to the Israeli Defense Forces. Krav Maga is based on natural and instinctual responses. You will learn to defend yourself against many physical attacks, common and uncommon. We train with as much realism as possible and maintain a high level of safety for our students. The training is physical -- you will get a workout during this program. You will learn defenses against a standing attacker as well as attacks on the ground. You‟ll also learn to defend against various types of weapons. The system is easy to learn and retain. No previous experience is necessary. This program is open to males and females at least fifteen years of age. FAITH NIGHTS

Upward Bound

The Wallingford YMCA is opening its doors FREE to our various faith communities of the greater Wallingford area on two Saturday nights a month. We are dedicated to helping build strong spirits, minds and bodies at the YMCA. Churches, youth groups, synagogues, mosques and other faith organizations are invited to submit a request for a Saturday night at the Y. The gym, racquetball courts, one swimming pool and the fitness center will be open for use from 6:30-8:30PM. For more information, please contact the Aquatics Director.

Upward Bound is a free program offered by the Wallingford Family YMCA designed to help students in grades six through eight grow and develop in a positive environment with positive role models. It incorporates the Y philosophy of developing the spirit, mind, and body. Youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. In doing so, our hope is that these youth will grow and learn about themselves in a multitude of aspects in their lives. In growing to understand themselves more completely, they will be better equipped when faced with everyday challenges.

ADVOCACY

VOLUNTEERS

GRASSROOTS/COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

Volunteers are the heart and soul of any YMCA. The time and talent contributed by the men and women who volunteer at the Wallingford Family YMCA enable us to meet the needs of the many people we serve. Play and mentor kids! Help raise funds during our Strong Kids Campaign. Dive into helping needy families and elders. Work with seniors on improving health and peace of mind. Help guide runners during our Fishbein Road Race. We welcome anyone who wants to help with helping people. We've got something for everyone interested in volunteering. We may have specific needs at any time, but we are always happy to speak with you about volunteering ideas. We are so grateful for the work of students, graduate students, seniors, stay-at-home moms, people in transition as well as professionals in any field. Stop by the Welcome Center to pick up an application today!

Activate Wallingford Through Pioneering Healthier Communities, the YMCA serves as “convenors, bringing together high-level representatives from the government, non-profit, and private sectors to drive meaningful change in each of their communities. PHC focuses on collaborative engagement with community leaders, how environments influence health and well-being, and the role that public policy plays in sustaining change. Our mission is to activate & promote healthy living to improve the overall quality of life for Wallingford. Activate Wallingford strives to enhance the importance of a healthy lifestyle, build relationships within communities by focusing on the leading health issues facing this country, strengthening the capacity for coalition building in communities, attracting a new set of volunteers to the effort to build a healthy community; and increase the community's ability to promote policy and environmental changes that encourage and support healthy living. This is NOT an initiative to build new programs and services for the community. However, programs and funding can resonate from this initiative. The goal is to change our existing "epidemic" through public policy, which will result in environmental change!

2011 STRONG KIDS CAMPAIGN GOAL: $100,000 CARING AND COMMITTED STAFF Last Year, over 387 individuals in the Wallingford community benefited from partial or full financial assistance provided from the funds raised from the Annual Strong Kids Campaign.

YMCA PROGRAMS

MORE THAN JUST FUN AND GAMES YMCA programs such as swim lessons, child care, camping youth sports and teen programs do more than just teach skills. They also teach youth to grow to responsible, caring adults. Our coaches and staff are positive role models for kids, helping them develop their own leadership capabilities and realize their potential. Of course, they‟ll be having so much fun, they won‟t realize they‟re learning life lessons at the same time! We encourage all children to grow in spirit, minds and body through participation at the YMCA.

Our YMCA staff is a daily presence to our children and families. Every day, YMCA staff feed and rock babies, teach preschoolers to tie shoes and help children and teens learn to resolve conflicts in a healthy way.

A SAFE PLACE One of the most crucial roles a YMCA plays is that of a safe place. At the Y, kids can be kids, play is encouraged and everyone is welcome to take part. Under the guidance of our trained and caring staff and volunteers, children can grow in spirit, mind and body. And, through your help, no child in need is turned away from the Y. $3,995
