uch to the delight of the noisy soccer fans Hanover Park FC was crowned champion of the fifth annual Silver Spurs over-35 tournament at Johnson Road sports complex in Rylands on Sunday. Nicknamed “Brasse vanni Park” the team boasted a few household names that featured prominantly in Hanover Park and Premier United’s cup triumphs of yester-year. They once again delivered for their club owner and manager Rieduwaan Anthony. Anthony’s side shaded Amakhosi of Bonteheuwel 4-3 in a tense penalty shoot-out after the final ended in a goalless draw after regulation time. The first set of penalties ended on an even keel as both teams slotted home three spot kicks. However, in the sudden death contest, Niam Williams’s penalty for the Amakhosi side was saved by Hanover Park’s goalminder Clement Schuller, which left Shamiel Anthony with the responsibility of scoring the match-winning penalty. Anthony made no mistake with the strike, which sent the jubilant crowd into scenes of wild celebration. In the earlier round of the penalty contest, Nazier Benjamin, Jonathan Solomons and Jeremy Jansen all converted their spot kicks for the Brasse while Marawaan Bantam, Faiez Adams and Ashley Paulse scored for the Amakhosi. Big crowds The tournament brought droves of spectators to Johnson Road once again, with more than 3000 people making their way to the matches on Friday and Saturday. These matches showcased a wide variety of stars, ranging from former professional to top-class amateur soccer players, scattered across the 24 teams who took part in the tournament. Household names that used to turn out for Hellenic, Santos, Cape Town Spurs and Battswood made their presence felt. Big names like Marawaan Bantam, Cassiem Mohamed, Chrissando de Webber, Ronald “Hurry” Campher, Wayne Roberts, Jonathan Solomons, Leslie “Hare” Forbes, Darryl Roelf and Chris “Muis”Arendse were among the players on show and added a degree of class to the proceedings, still coming forth to produce some touches of sheer brilliance. Abdul Tajoodien, the tournament convenor, says the Silver Spurs executive is pleased with the turnout of spectators and the clubs’ willingness to participate. “We are looking to extend the entry to 32 teams and perhaps negotiate with other major business houses to bring more sponsors on board, because the tournament which has produced growth, needs bigger incentives for moving forward and creating a carnival atmosphere,” says Tajoodien.
