MANENBERG

Women’s stories to help others EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt

T

he Saartjie Baartman Centre in Manenberg has launched a new awareness campaign which aims to shift mindsets. The Help #ChangeHerStory campaign is calling for greater recognition of the impact violence and abuse is having on individuals and the urgent need for intervention in the lives of women at risk. In the wake of the recent murders of Courtney Pieters, Lindokuhle Kota, René Tracy Roman and Vuyiseka Poni the spotlight is on ongoing gender-based violence and crimes against children. “Violence and victimisation are everyday occurrences in our society, so often starting in our homes and expanding into our communities. Many of the women who come to the centre have been abused more than once in their lifetime,” says Shaheema McLeod, director of the centre. Zeenat Osman, a child counsellor at the centre, says parents need to be more aware of their children’s behaviour, where anything out of the ordinary should trigger alarm bells. “What I have found is that you get these extroverted children before abuse occurred and they will become introverted and withdrawn [after they have been abused]. They will even regress to things like bedwetting and thumb-sucking because they do not know how to deal with the emotional difficulties that they are going through and the abuse they are going through,” says Osman. She adds that these children often fall into depression. “They fear the world and they see it as a hostile environment. For many that is a reality because of the communities that they are growing up in and the violence that is occurring in their homes. “Parents should just be really aware of their children. If their children say something, take it to heart and investigate further and try to assist the children. Children generally just don’t speak up, because they don’t know how to. So when they do it, take it seriously,” she says. A former resident, Rachel Peterson, who now works at the centre, says she hopes the Help #ChangeHerStory campaign trans-

forms the way women educate each other about abuse. “The only way would be to be helped here, become aware and then go out there and go tell my story. People need to realise who Rachel is and where she came from. As I said, if someone reads or listens to my story, that same woman who is reading or listening to the story might be going though abuse at that moment, but by doing so she relates and finds out that there is help out there for her and that she can stand up for herself,” Peterson says. The campaign is rallying corporate sponsors as well as the public to pledge their support to help women and their children who have experienced abuse and violence. Through a crowdfunding page, www.thundafund.com/project/changeherstory, South Africans can help to #ChangeHerStory in incremental but important ways – from sponsoring a skills workshop to providing meals for a week’s stay at the centre. McLeod cannot say with “absolute certainty” that the number of cases of abuse is on the increase or if there is simply more awareness of the epidemic which is leading to an increased number of admissions at the centre. “We know what the stats show and that has been proven. That alone is very alarming and worrying,” she says. The women all urge victims of abuse to speak up, with Osman reiterating that parents need to have the necessary difficult discussions with their children, even if it makes them feel uncomfortable. “It is simple things that we can do; we shouldn’t just tell our children about the ‘boogie man’ that is not really under our beds. “We should say that even though adults are safe people, some adults are not and these are the things they should be looking out for. Be it that they are being touched inappropriately or being asked an inappropriate question or even in just playing with you. “We should deal with the difficult topics that we don’t want to speak to our children about because maybe it makes us feel uncomfortable, but we need to do it so that we can create the education and awareness.”

Book launch at aquarium A book about a boat is raising funds for the Shark Spotters as it inspires. A uniquely South African story, The Little Optimist, is a tale that its readers will relate to – adventure, passion, overcoming hardships through belief, accepting our differences and never ever giving up. The book launch takes place tomorrow at 18:00 at the Two Oceans Aquarium. The Little Optimist is authored by Greg Bertish, an inspirational adventurer and a founder of the unique Shark Spotters programme. Bertish will give a presentation on The Little Optimist and the early days of the
