Santos to tackle log leaders LIAM MOSES

AN ACID test awaits Santos when they take on National First Division (NFD) log leaders Mpumalanga Black Aces in Middelburg on Saturday. The Lansdowne club have hit form in the league, winning all three of their NFD games since the start of the year, and seem to have turned the corner on their poor performances in the first-half of the season. Santos beat Thanda Royal Zulu 1-0 and thumped Polokwane City 4-1 in February, before recording a 2-1 victory over Sivutsa Stars at Athlone Stadium on Friday night. However, Saturday’s encounter against Aces, who beat them 0-1 at Athlone Stadium in the first game of the season, could be an entirely different prospect. While Ian Palmer, the side’s head coach, admits the match will be tough, he isn’t reading too much in Ace’s position on the table. “We played Thanda Royal Zulu and they were a test. We played Polokwane City and they were also a test, because they are on the bottom of the log,” says Palmer. “From now until the end of the league every game is going to be a test and the position on the league doesn’t really matter. Playing away from home will be difficult, but I think the players have the confidence because of the three wins.” The People’s Team have lost only one match since Palmer took charge of the club during the extended mid-season break, going down 3-2 to local rivals Vasco da Gama in the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday 13 February. Friday’s victory, courtesy of two goals from debutante Carl Lark, saw Palmer’s team climb to third on the table. But Palmer was left unconvinced by his side’s performance, despite the victory, and

GET READY: Santos coach Ian Palmer (right) has cautioned his players against over confidence after notching up their third consecutive league victory. PHOTO: LIAM MOSES cautioned the players against over-confidence. “I wasn’t impressed with the match yesterday, but the sign of a championship team is getting full points even when you play badly,” he says. “Just because we won doesn’t mean we (are allowed to) play badly next week again. In terms of turning the corner, I can only judge that after about six games. “Now we are in with an outside chance and there are still fifteen games to go. Forget about the last performance, now we focus on what’s lying ahead of us.” The former Black Leopards mentor says tactical discipline, defensive organisation and sharp counter-attacking will be key if his side are to leave Mpumalanga with their impressive run intact.

Yankees aim to avenge KO defeat WESTRIDGE YANKEES aim to lay the ghosts of 2012 to rest when they play in the Western Province Softball Federation Super League Knockout final on Sunday 10 March. Yankees were beaten 2-1 by Glenthorne A’s in the final of last year’s Knockout and they look ahead to meet their rivals in the final again this year. Westridge qualified for this year’s final after brushing aside Old Mutual Cubs 6-3 on Sunday 24 February, while A’s faced Tantasport in their semi-final last night. The outcome of the match had not been determined at the time of going to print. Lester Smith, Yankees head coach, was certain A’s would triumph in the semi-final and says his team is “gearing themselves up” to face A’s. “I think we are evenly matched this season. I think Glenthorne has the same pedigree as Yankees and they are a team on the brink of success,” he says. “We know what to expect from them and they know what to expect from us. It’s a matter of who takes the opportunities on the day. “They are a young side, they are confident and have a good team spirit. They have some variety and they have some quick players, which works in their favour in their offensive game.”

Touchline topics

A’s currently lead the Super League table – with 33 points after 16 victories in 17 games – while Westridge hold second place – on 30 points after 15 victories. Westridge recently suffered defeat at the hands of their rivals, losing 3-1 to A’s on Sunday 31 March, and it is expected the league victors will be decided when the teams meet again in the final round of matches in mid-March. Smith says last year’s final defeat, the recent loss and the fact that the teams are neck-and-neck in the title race has all added extra incentive to the Knockout final clash. “It does add a bit of incentive. I was on break last year so I wasn’t involved with Yankees last season as I was coaching the South Africa under-19 team,” he says. “The incentive is there to beat them this time around. The league is the biggest prize and has always been Yankees’ bread and butter. In the past the rivalry was between us and Falcons. At the moment Glenthorne has replaced Falcons in that rivalry.” Smith hopes a large crowd will be in attendance at Turfhall, for what is expected to be tight encounter. V The time of the game has not been confirmed yet, but it is expect to take place between 13:00 and 16:00 on Sunday. V Grassy Park: Crusaders Soccer Club will host its annual meeting at the Grassy Park High School hall at 14:00 on Sunday 10 March at the same venue. Phone Emil Philander on 083 653 1791.
