SUBCOUNCIL 20 paid tribute to individuals and groups who have done outstanding work in their communities at the fifth Civic Honours Presentation at the Alphen Hall in Constantia. Ian Iversen, the Subcouncil 20 chairperson, says: “Since the commencement of this
programme a total of 36 individuals and four groups have been singled out for recognition. When one listens to the news or reads a newspaper these days, the depressing stories shake our faith in fellow human beings. “However, there are many people prepared to take up the challenge of addressing matters concerning security, environment, care of the young and old, arts, civic affairs,
sport and protection of animals. They offer their limited free time, energy and skills without asking to be financially recompensed.” Councillors Jan Burger (ward 72), Carol Bew (ward 73), Elizabeth Brunette (ward 62), Penny East (ward 71) Ian Iversen (ward 59) and Matthew Kempthorne (ward 58) chose and presented awards to their local heroes.
Burger awarded businessman Ralph Freese for instigating and privately funding an independent environmental study of ward 72. The study includes the fauna and flora of the wetlands and vleis. He also generously covered the cost of a conservation officer to look after the wetlands. Burger described Ralph as a “man of action”..
