Speak out incident was reported, or after the arrest of the perpetrator, or at the first court appearance. This places enormous pressure on the police and the Criminal Justice system. At one house in Mitchell’s Plain police attended to 21 complaints in a month. According to Vearey: “Your house may be the most violent place in Mitchell’s Plain”, with children being exposed to violence. Last year the police recorded six murders which were domestic related. What police found during their investigations was that after these incidents, families of the victim and neighbours and friends knew what was happening and did not assist the victim of abuse. Vearey asked: “Why is it that the community can easily mobilise themselves against drug dealers, yet when it comes to domestic violence they turn a blind eye?” He added: “It’s uncomfortable and people don’t want to get involved; however we encourage the victims and the community to tackle the issue as they would drug dealing. We should stop looking for a stereotype violent person, because those who are violent are respectable people.” Anette Joubert, a child protection worker for the Mitchell’s Plain Network Opposing Abuse, says abuse in on the increase;, but still victims remain quiet and suffer in silence. Joubert says: “The reason many cases are withdrawn is that the victims are not educated enough on their rights and in many cases not ready to take further steps. “We have an office at the police station and we provide counselling to victims at the police station. “We also find that more men are being abused and raped by women; however this is swept under the carpet. We at the network will be work-

ITH the 16 Days of Activism for no crime against women and children in full swing, alarming statistics of the Mitchell’s Plain Police station indicate that assaults and domestic related disputes are on the increase. Mitchell’s Plain Police cluster commander, Major-General Jeremy Vearey, tells People’s Post that from 1 April last year to 31 March this year, 11 355 complaints were attended to by the police. Commenting on the Domestic Violence Analysis report for Mitchell’s Plain, Vearey says: “Out of the 11 355 complaints attended to by the police; 1 971 were Domestic Violence related cases. This means that 9 384 incidents has never resulted in actual cases or the charges were either withdrawn.” According to the report, most complaints of this nature are made on Saturdays and Sundays; with the festive period months of January and December showing the highest number of complaints. “Most of these incidents occur when all parties are at home, during the evening over a weekend. In most of these complaints, the suspects are known to the victim, with the incidents being either domestic related or interpersonal conflict between the victim and the known suspect,” says Vearey. He added that police spend over an hour at a house where there is a domestic dispute. In all these complaints, case dockets were registered and investigated. After the investigation, the cases were processed and the suspects appeared in court. In many incidents cases were withdrawn by the complainants, either shortly after the

PRIMA BALLERINAS: Celebrating the 15th anniversary of Ballet at St Cyprian’s School, as well as the 140th birthday of the School, the annual St Cyprian’s ballet pro duction by dance teacher Susan de Moyencourt will take place in the school hall (Gorge Rd, Oran jezicht), on Friday 2 December at 16:30, and on Saturday 3 De cember at 19:00. A varied, quirky pro gramme with 160 dancers from pre school to adult, it will feature a retrospec tive collage of favourite ballets. Pictured above are 22 senior dancers performing as Snow flakes from the Nutcracker. There are spectacular costumes, and a wide range of music from Handel to boogie woogie. Tickets are on sale at the School Clothing Shop from 9am each day, and at the door, costing R75 per adult, and R40 per child. Photo: Gavin Furlonger

Become wise on the BEE process THE Haedons Training Academy, in partnership with Starfair Business Consulting, will host a free information session on BEE Compliance on Wednesday 7 December at the Westridge Library, from 09:00 until 10:00. During this session potential entrepreneurs will be informed on how to submit tenders, and the new processes and registering on the Private and Public sector databases.

The session is vital for all entrepreneurs, because as from 7 December this year, it will be mandatory to be in possession of a BEE Certificate. Having this certificate will play a vital role in the adjudication process, and private companies and corporate are insisting on EME certification before doing business with anyone. For further information call John Prinsloo on 082 958 7865 or Bruce Bouwers on 083 320 8228.

Encouraging healthy living THE Hope City Church of the Nazarene, situated at the Moira and Denise Roads, Mitchell Heights, will hold a Medical Crusade on Wednesday (30 November) and Thursday (1 December) at the church. There will be free medical check-ups. Free reading glasses will be handed out to those in need. Pastor David Slinger says this is a

way of reaching out to the community. “There will also be ministers who will pray for the healing of body and soul,” he says. The crusade will be from 09:30 to 14:00 on both days, with a children’s rally from 15:00 until 17:00. Everyone is welcome to attend. For further details call Pastor Slinger on 082 872 5400.

ROUDLY South African (Proudly SA), The Manufacturing Circle, and The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) announced that they will be collaborating on a number of areas of common interest, chief of which will be the promotion and development of a thriving and competitive South African economy. The CEO of Proudly SA, Leslie Sedibe, the Chairman of the Manufacturing Circle, Stewart Jennings, and NUMSA General Secretary, Irvin Jim, signed a pledge outlining a policy of helping to increase demand for locally-produced products and services by stimulating local procurement. This pledge also envisages advancing the country’s overall objective of skilled and semi-skilled job creation opportunities. Stewart Jennings says; “Once we started interacting, we quickly realised that many common objectives existed. For isntance, there is the need for a competitive currency to underpin exports and the need to boost enterprise development. We need to understand the impact of illegal imports on the South African economy. We need to udnerstand the high cost of doing business as a result of municipal fees, port charges, electricity prices and the increasingly onerous terms of trade. “Our common purpose is the driving force that has enabled us to move forward with this pledge, which is closely aligned to the recently-signed Local Procurement Accord.” Sedibe says “The South African Government’s Preferential Procurement Regulations, recently introduced, provides the catalyst for us to combine forces with the com-

mon objective of promoting the local economy so that South Africa can succeed.” The Preferential Procurement Regulations coincides with the Local Procurement Accord in which the Government has stated its commitment to expand the value of goods and services it procures from South African companies. Standards for measurement and verification of local content will be agreed. Companies represented by the Manufacturing Circle and Proudly SA form the cornerstone of the South African economy. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa’s General Secretary, Irvin Jim, stated that, “Organised labour has expressed its commitment that goods and services used by the union and all affiliates, will be sourced locally. Consideration has been given to the establishment of a procurement desk that unions will use to ensure the accurate identification of local suppliers, while auditors will be tasked with the verification of selected suppliers.” Pan-African Investment and Research Services (PAIRS), which compiles the Manufacturing Circle’s quarterly bulletin, recently completed work on research to better understand the multiplier benefit of creating jobs in South Africa and supporting South African manufacturing. Dr Iraj Abedian, CEO of PAIRS, the Economist and Independent Advisor to the Manufacturing Circle said, “Our research report has shown that the manufacturing sector remains a critical source of decent and sustainable job creation, with considerable positive multiplier effects for economic diversification, fiscal benefits and favourable balance of payments. South Africa has to take urgent and meaningful steps to reverse the decline in the manufacturing sector.”

Gang bosses nabbed MELISSA PAPIER

“WE will hunt you down in your hiding place.” This stern message to criminals comes from Mitchell’s Plain cluster commander Major-General Jeremy Vearey. “We will expose these dealers in their quiet suburbs to their respectable neighbours.” He was speaking after police nabbed two suspected gang leaders in two intelligence operations last week. During this operation, which started at 22:00 on Thursday night and lasted until the next morning, police arrested 52 suspects for various crimes. Many of the suspects have been dodging court and had warrants of arrest against them. Station Management has taken a “zero tolerance” approach to crime and has roped in top brass to intensify the operations in the area after a recent spate of gang-related incidents (“Zero tolerance approach to crime,” People’s Post, 22 November). Vearey told People’s Post that the police are taking the same approach with all the high flyers and “we will arrest you in public so that people can see who you are and what you do for a living.” The operation was supported by the Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel, and head of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in the Western Cape, Advocate Hisham Mohamed. In the first incident, the son of the alleged Americans’ gang boss was arrested at their

house in Viscount Street, Rocklands. “He was found in possession of an air riffle and 63 9mm rounds. During the raid police also found two digital scales, four cell phones and documents, as well as a substantial amount of money,” says Vearey. In a separate incident, the police arrested the suspected leader of the Nice Time Kids and his wife in Grassy Park. Persistence by undercover police officials over time led to this successful arrest and confiscation of a firearm and drugs. “The TRT and other police officers raided a house in Bass Street, Zeekoevlei. During the search they discovered a 9mm Taurus pistol with 15 rounds, 50 quarts of heroin, 96 straws of heroin, one packet of tik, six cellphones, and a substantial amount of cash. “Among the things confiscated, officers also found a number of bail receipts for other members of the gang. We arrested a 39year-old man and his 29-year-old wife for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of drugs,” he says. Vearey added the police will arrest anyone who benefits from the drug trade. “These drug dealers are hiding behind their wealth in other areas. Our message is that we will hunt you down. We will target the support network of these dealers as well.” He added that the police will not rest until all firearms used in crimes have been recovered. “We will make life uncomfortable for those who benefit from the proceeds (of crime). These dealers want to live a normal, respectable life while the children of Mitchell’s Plain and the community are suffering. This will not be tolerated,” he says.

WITH the festive season around the corner the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) urges bathers to swim only at beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty. Their call follows a recent incident at Nine Miles beach where three people nearly drowned in the surf. Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the NSRI, says on Saturday 19 November at 17:15, the NSRI Strandfontein

RIME prevention operations by the Mitchell’s Plain Police over the weekend has resulted in 93 suspects being arrested for various crimes. Operations started on Friday at 06:00 and ended yesterday morning. Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police station, Constable Jerome Voegt, says that on Friday evening at 18:30, the Mitchell’s Plain Tactical Response Team (TRT) were doing crime prevention patrols in Hengelaar Street, Beacon Valley, when they spotted two suspicious-looking men standing in the street near an alleged drug outlet. “The suspects were searched and in their possession officers found 259 units of heroin and six packets of tik with an estimated street value of R13 000. “The men aged 25 and 32 years were arrested on charges relating to the possession of drugs,” says Voegt. On Saturday evening officers were doing a routine vehicle patrol in Cyclamen Street, Lentegeur, when they noticed a suspiciouslooking man walking in the street. “Officers stopped the man and in his possession they found five live 9mm rounds. A 28-year-old man was arrested on charges re-

Stabbing incidents Meanwhile an 18-year-old appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Monday) for the murder of a 16-year-old youth last Tuesday. According to Voegt the boy was stabbed on Tuesday at 13:15. The police attended to a report of an incident on the corner of Keurboom and Merrydale streets in Lentegeur. “It’s alleged that three men were approached by four other men. There was a confrontation, which led to the 16-year-old being stabbed by one of the four men.” In a separate incident on Wednesday, the police received a report of a stabbing in Spine Road, Tafelsig. On arrival at the scene, Voegt says, the police discovered a 17-year-old with a single stab wound to his upper body. It was alleged that the stabbing took place at about 13:00. The victim was taken to the Mitchell’s Plain Community Health Centre. An 18-year-old was arrested for the stabbing and appeared in court on Friday. At this stage it appears to be an isolated incident, according to Voegt.

volunteer sea rescue received reports of three people in difficulty at Nine Miles Beach. “The NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched a sea rescue craft and rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene. On arrival, rescue swimmers found that a girl was in difficulty, possibly swept away by a rip-current. Her father went into the water to try to rescue her. An onduty lifeguard managed to

rescue the girl from the water.” In a separate incident the same day at 17:58 NSRI Strandfontein volunteer sea rescue duty crew were alerted by lifeguards at Strandfontein Beach. “The volunteers were walking past the NSRI sea rescue base on their way home, when they were told by a colleague still at Strandfontein Beach, that a woman was being swept out to sea in a rip current,” he says. Lambinon encouraged bathers to obey the instructions of the lifeguards.

No hassling for ‘Christmas boxes’ BEING HASSLED by a Solid Waste dirt collector for festive funds? Report it to the City of Cape Town. Council has a policy that strictly forbids personnel from asking residents for “Christmas boxes” and “donations”. “Problems have also arisen where people posing as City staff have asked for money, sometimes rudely and aggressively, the City reports. They have also threatened that waste will not be collected if the demand is not met. “The City will not tolerate such behaviour from our own staff and have accordingly instructed all staff that soliciting for ‘Christmas boxes’ and donations is discouraged,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, Shehaam Sims. “If residents believe that excellent service has been provided, they are of course at liberty to

give a voluntary donation to staff as a gesture of thanks and goodwill, but under no circumstances should they be approached or solicited for money. “City staff are well paid by industry standards, and all permanent staff receive a 13th cheque at the end of November,” added Sims. Report any incidents of intimidation by City staff to its call centre on 0860 103 089 during office hours. Apart from the date, time and place, the staff identity number and/or vehicle registration number should be provided so that the culprits can be identified. Such reports will be investigated immediately and, where residents are willing to testify, the City will be able to prosecute offenders. Should you be aware of outsiders posing as City officials, the matter should be reported to the local police.

Tuesday 29 November 2011 HEALTH INJECTION: The Children’s Hos pital Trust handed over two fully equipped paediatric ambulances to the Western Cape Gov ernment Health on Tuesday 18 Octo ber. The ambulanc es will serve paedi atric emergency needs in the Cape Town Metropole re gion 24/7, specifi cally to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Tygerberg Hospital and Somerset Hospital. Western Cape Government MEC for Health, Theuns Botha, thanked the Trust for their donation. “This is an excellent example of the kind of healthcare that cannot be provided by the provincial health budget. However, through the Trust, we are now able to offer stateoftheart ambulances,” says Botha. Photo: Yunus Mohamed

Take care this summer THE City of Cape Town is appealing to residents to be especially cautious during the warmer months between October and April when Cape Town is at a high risk for uncontrolled and runaway vegetation fires. The combination of high temperatures and gale force South-Easterly winds is a major contributing factor in the rapid spread of fires. There are two main types of fire in Cape Town – vegetation and structural – and both can be prevented in most cases. Vegetation fires that occur in mountainous areas are particularly dangerous because of inaccessibility and limited water supply. Theo Layne spokesperson for Fire and Rescue Services, says the City’s Fire and Rescue Services deal with more than 8 000 vegetation fires every year, most of which occur in the summer months. “The City has employed 120 seasonal firefighters on a contract basis from November to April. They are trained to fight veld fires and are deployed at various fire stations to assist firefighters. Informal settlements are at a high-risk for the rapid spread of structural fires. The rate of spread is directly influenced by the materials used in construction of settlements and the distance between each structure,” he says. Residents are urged to report a damaged fire hydrant to 0860 103 089, so that it can be repaired as soon as possible. The public are asked to report any fires to the Public Emergency Call Centre on 107 from a landline or (021) 480-7700 from a cell phone. Enter the number on your cell phone as a speed dial. The following tips could prevent a potential disaster: Vegetation fires . No fires are allowed on the mountain fringe areas except in specifically demarcated areas and pre-authorised areas. If you are unsure whether fires are allowed in an area, do not make a fire. . Do not discard burning cigarettes from your vehicle. They are pollutants and one of

the causes of vegetation fires. Use the ashtray in the vehicle. . Ensure that fire hydrants remain unobstructed at all times, especially by parked vehicles. Tampering with hydrants can delay a firefighter’s ability to bring a fire under control timeously. . Ensure your braai or cooking fire is completely extinguished before leaving areas where fires are allowed. . Comply with the legal requirements for burning vegetation off-cuts (refer to the City of Cape Town Community Safety By-law and National Veld and Forest Act or refer to www.capetown.gov.za for more information). Structural fires . Buy a fire extinguisher and keep it in an accessible place in your home . Every home should have more than one exit to ensure escape if a fire breaks out. . Informal homes should be built at least three metres apart to stop fires from spreading. . Keep matches, lighters, paraffin and poisons out of reach of young children. . Use child-proof caps on flammable products such as paraffin. . Extinguish all candles and lamps before going to bed or leaving the house. . Avoid smoking in bed – it is dangerous. . Keep stoves on a flat surface away from drafts and flammable objects. . Never leave fires and cooking stoves unattended. . Always keep a bucket of sand and a bucket of water handy, in case a fire breaks out. . Switch off all electrical appliances when not in use. . Do not overload plug points. . Electrical connections must be professionally installed and properly earthed with the correct circuit breakers installed. How to prevent shack fires . Keep a close eye on paraffin stoves. Don’t cook near a window with a curtain . Make sure the stove doesn’t fall over, which may burn children or cause a fire . Make sure candles are secure and can’t fall over. Don’t go to sleep with candles still burning

Ready for the festive season MELISSA PAPIER

T

HE two-year R500 million upgrade and refurbishment of the Liberty Promenade Shopping Centre in Mitchell’s Plain has been completed, just in time for the festive season. On Tuesday the shopping centre was relaunched by Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, following the expansion project that turned the shopping centre into the second largest shopping centre in the province. The launch was hosted by Samuel Ogbu, CEO for Liberty Properties and Thea Marx, the General Manager of Coastal Regions at Liberty Properties. Guests included representatives of local government, police, traffic, disaster management and schools. Present also were the local councillor and subcouncil manager and representatives of the Urban Renewal Project. Liberty Promenade is one of the largest shopping centres in Liberty Properties’ R24billion (1.5 million m²) property portfolio, and one of the largest investments in the Western Cape. In the past eight years Liberty Promenade has established itself as the centre of a vibrant, diverse and fast-growing community in Mitchell’s Plain. It currently attracts a million visitors a month. In her keynote address at the launch, Zille said day November 22 would always be remembered as a “watershed day in South Africa, but that good news such as the launch of Liberty Promenade, that benefited the local economy, showed that there was still hope for the future in South Africa.” The day has been dubbed “Black Tuesday” – the day MPs voted to move forward on the controversial Protection of State Information Bill. If investments like Liberty Promenade flourish, it creates a virtuous cycle that could push back negative developments in South Africa. “The vote in parliament is a setback, but hope remained for a free and prosperous South Africa. We will defeat through growth and development,” Zille says. She added that in South Africa the good news always outweighs the bad news – with Cape Town being on a roll. “Cape Town has been voted the top global tourist city by Trip Advisor, World Design Capital 2014, one of the 10 hippest cities in the world, meaning it attracts young talent who want to build a future in Cape Town. This signifues a reversal of the brain drain of 10 years ago.” She referred to Table Mountain becoming one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and being rated as one of the top 10 ‘study abroad’ destinations. “But the cherry on top is when big investors like Liberty Properties come to Cape Town. We are encouraged by their assessment of Cape Town, and Mitchell’s Plain, as a great place to invest. We will not rest until we are among the top 10 investment destinations in the world,” she said. Ogbu said “Invest-

WELCOME: Liberty Properties CEO Samuel Ogbu and Thea Marx, General Manager of Coastal Regions at Liberty Properties, greet Premier Helen Zille outside the mall. Photo: Supplied ment in infrastructure, facilities and services are important to improve quality of life. It is an essential part of uplifting areas such as Mitchell’s Plain, which previously did not attract their fair share of investment capital.” Liberty Properties bought the centre from its developers in 2004, with a retail space of 42 000 m². Today, with the addition of a new Entertainment Wing and Food Court, another 24 000 m² – equivalent to five football fields – has been added to Liberty Promenade. “We have conducted extensive research into the market and our experience has shown that if you present an offering of sustained quality, the people of Mitchell’s Plain will support you. “ We take a very careful approach to these things because we represent hundreds of thousands of ordinary South African savers and pensioners,” he said. “The extension and refurbishment has entrenched the centre’s status as the preferred shopping destination of the Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha communities. We are proud of the outcome and delighted that the community has embraced it.” The R500 million investment directly benefited the community, as 67% of the expansion project’s workforce came from the broader Mitchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha and Philippi areas. The centre now houses 185 tenants and has created 1 200 permanent jobs in two years. It also boasts a selected area where local entrepreneurs, who previously traded informally in the Mini Mall, had earned a place in the main building. In the expansion process, commuters also benefited from a refurbished and covered taxi rank, while security was increased with the addition of CCTV in the parking area and the appointment of additional security personnel outside.

HOLIDAY GUIDE

Slave bell to ring out Garden hours THE Company’s Garden in Queen Victoria Street will remain open until 20:30 every day from the beginning of the school holidays on Saturday 10 December until Wednesday 29 February 2012. This will allow residents and visitors a chance to enjoy the long summer days in this beautiful and tranquil setting within the CBD. “The Garden is an ideal setting for a walk or a relaxing picnic on the lawns in the cool evening air,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Tandeka Gqada. The tradition of ringing the memorial ‘slave bell’ to signal the Garden’s closing time will also be revived. The bell, which stands near the aviary in the Company’s Garden, is in fact the old Town Hall bell that was rung in the event of a fire. It dates back to 1855. In the late 1920s it was moved to the Company’s Garden and hung on a bell tower modelled after the tower in the grounds of Stellenbosch’s Elsenburg Agricultural College. This ‘slave bell’ will ring out the extended opening hours during the Festive Sea-

son. The Company’s Garden restaurant will also stay open later from Saturday 10 December to Sunday 15 January 2012 and musicians will provide light entertainment in the evenings during this period. Renowned violin teacher, Maria Botha, will kick off the musical entertainment schedule with a bang on Sunday 11 December. Botha runs a violin teaching project with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and will bring her group of students from Nyanga, Gugulethu and Cape Town to play an informal session near the restaurant at 17:00. The students will be conducted by violin teachers from France and Canada, who are in Cape Town for a violin workshop. Safety in the Company’s Garden is assured by the 24-hour private security personnel who patrol the area, as well as CCTV cameras positioned in strategic locations. City Law Enforcement Officers will also be at hand to conduct regular patrols until 20:00.

Become your own boss SMALL, medium and micro enterprises account for about 40% of South Africa’s gross domestic product, and employ more than half of the private sector work force. However, 80% of small businesses fail within the first five years. According to the most recent Global Entrepreneurship Monitor study, South Africa lags far behind many developing nations in terms of its entrepreneurial activity levels. The Western Cape is one of the most entrepreneurially dynamic provinces in the country, but still contributes just 14.4% to the coun-

People’s Post Mitchell's Plain Page 17

try’s gross domestic product (GDP), partly due to the lack of entrepreneurial education and infrastructure in the region. The Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) now aims to encourage more entrepreneurial development within the Western Cape, with the launch of Seda Small Business Stars, a national business plan competition with a unique focus on entrepreneurial education at a provincial level. The competition will be adjudicated by a panel recruited from top business development agencies and service providers. The judging process will identify

20 national business idea winners and 20 existing business winners, all of whom will receive their share of more than R400 000 in cash, as well as laptops and Seda business support to the value of up to R60 000 each. Special prizes will also be presented to the best woman entrepreneur, the best youth entrepreneur, the best disabled entrepreneur and the best “job-creating” entrepreneur. The competition is open to any South African citizen over the age of 18 with a business idea or existing small business. Entries close on 31 January, 2012. For more information, visit www.seda.org.za or follow Seda Small Business Stars on Twitter or Facebook.

Help change the world TAMMY PETERSEN

DO YOU have canned goods stacked in the back of your cupboards because the children don’t like what’s inside? Or did you buy more groceries than you needed? Donate it to a worthy cause – there are people in your community who need it. Living Hope, in conjunction with People’s Post and Fruit and Veg City, will be spreading the cheer with hampers of hope to disadvantaged communities and they need your help to make it a success. By donating dry food items or canned goods, you can spread the Christmas cheer to those who are facing trying times. Living Hope has been offering help for the past 10 years. The organisation consists of four ministries – Living Grace, Living Right, Living Way and Living Care – each performing a vital role in the upliftment of communities in Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Fish Hoek, Red Hill and Capricorn. Living Grace is a ministry in Muizenberg, which acts as a safe haven for the homeless. It is not a shelter, as such, but a place where the needy can store their belongings in a locker, eat a breakfast and lunch, or just take a quick shower. There is also a Substance Abuse Recovery Programme, which gives people a hand-up (onto their feet) instead of a hand-

out. Living Right is divided into three sections. The first consists of health counsellors who come from the community they work in. They help with health-related inquiries and also educate people on chronic diseases and the importance of knowing their HIV status. The second section consists of support group facilitators, who meet people on a weekly basis and help them work through their life issues. The third section comprises life skills educators, who teach children from a young age. The Living Right ministry is, in essence, all about prevention. Not everybody has the time to get involved in charity work, but a simple donation will help you bring some sunlight to a family’s holiday season. Interested in making a change? Drop your donation into any marked box at a Fruit and Veg City store in the greater Cape Town area; at People’s Post’s office in Tokai; or at Living Hope in Capri, and consider it your good deed for the month. In early December, the food will be made into Hampers of Hope and distributed to the communities in need. For more information, phone Karen Peiser on 083 456 9594. Start packing – you only have until 2 December to change a family’s outlook on life.

Creating a better community THE Mitchell’s Plain People’s Forum has launched its “Proudly Mitchell’s Plain Environment Campaign” recently and are calling on all residents to become part of this programme. To date the campaign boasts 100 volunteers, divided into 13 teams, who are beauti-

fying their respective areas (such as open spaces and parks). The organisation wants to expand this Community Worker Programme into the Rocklands and Woodlands areas. Call Fred on (021) 392 6633 or 074 244 4245.

That winning feeling is quite familiar to the reigning champions, Pennsylvania Crooning Minstrels from Hanover Park. The team originated in District Six, but was later re-established in 1989 by the current owner, Richard Stemmet, who also captains the team. Pennsylvanians have dominated carnival competitions for the last decade and a half, walking away with first prize in best marches, dress, singing, playing and jolling. “We are very excited for the new season to kick off and everybody is working really hard to retain that trophy,” says Stemmet. The name, Pennsylvania Crooning Minstrels, reflects the influence on the Carnival of American minstrel troupes that visited South Africa in the late nineteenth century and were hugely popular with people of all colours. “This troupe is one of the oldest around and has loads of history attached, so it’s a real honour for me to be a part of something that my father started way back in District Six,” says Stemmet.

Isgak Wallace, 35, and Riedewaan Abrahams, 42, two dedicated members of the team, are the first to purchase their gear as soon as it goes on sale. Both said “there is no sport like klopse.” Every year the competition gets stronger, but the Pennsylvanians remain highly regarded within the minstrel community. “People can say what they like about the team, but we managed to win that trophy for several years running. The team grew bigger and better, showcasing extraordinary talent in various age groups,” says Wallace. “Playing in this troupe means a lot. This sport is much more than just dancing around in the street. You must have real talent in your team to walk away with the big prize,” says Abrahams. When asked about their chances of winning the 2012 Carnival Trophy, they laughed and said: “For the last few years we were waiting to be challenged by other teams. They are coming up, but they are not yet there, so we don’t have to answer that question. But let’s wait until the battle begins.” The competition is set for 2 January, with the annual road march through Darling Street, where all teams will be judged for presentation, turning into Adderley, heading up Wale Street, through the historic BoKaap, turning into Rose Street, where they finish off and head to the Athlone Stadium to perform their first items.

Your SMSes Carthorse killers are monsters I HOPE the barbarians who inflicted that abuse and agony on their carthorse die an agonizing, slow death one day and that they have a miserable life until then. That article upset me to the point of not being able to sleep at night (“Mr Lonely driven to death,” People’s Post, 22 November 2011). It is obvious what their intention was, to drive the poor animal to a state of sheer exhaustion so that it would not be able to resist them castrating it, although your article does not state this. They did not want to pay a vet to do the operation under general anaesthetic as per normal, or to bother contacting a welfare organization for financial help. A stallion is a dangerous animal to confine, unless you have the proper expertise and facilities. Yet the owner could pay R3 000

bail to avoid jail? After their botched attempt to castrate the poor wretched animal, it was simply left to die in agony. Are these people classified as human beings? No, they fall under the “monster” category, along with rapists, child-molesters, murderers, satanists and such. Why don’t carthorse owners simply buy an old car? A horse doesn't cost five cents to “run” and it is a beautiful, sensitive and noble creature. These people always have contacts to repair cars, and retread tyres, etc – why do they need to subject horses to reckless drivers, blistering long hot summers, and improper care? I wish the worst death for the evil sadists who tortured “Mr Lonely.” OUTRAGED ANIMAL-LOVER

As I opened my curtain, I looked AS I opened my curtain, I looked to the sky. I looked at the people and how life passed them by. Caught up in their own world, not seeing their brother’s struggle nor their pain. The corner of eye caught a man’s down-turned smile. His eyes flooded with tears as he presses through his Green mile. As I opened my curtain, I looked to the sky,

I saw a world empty and dry. The laughter and smiles of the kids have disappeared, it all passed away. People got robbed of their dignity and pride. I see the pain and struggle in their eyes, they no longer need to hide. As I opened my eyes I looked in my life, I saw a child that once was happy, never sad.

A little girl that ran with open arms, embracing her dad. The laughter and smiles of that little girl has disappeared, it all passed away, As she sees her reflection in the mirror, hair pinned up, shoulders broad, she prepares herself for another lifeless day. MEGAN SAMPSON Eastridge

. To the people of Bayview, Seacrest and San Remo: Stop buying stolen goods from addicts. It’s a crime. Arent you ashamed? You are destroying our youth. Disgruntled resident The end of Mr Lonely . A heartbreaking story of a poor carthorse’s suffering. The owner deserves to be tortured. . Pity the idiot witness did not alert the CHPA immediately, but why must you care? Moron. Hagy . I don’t usually advocate violence, but in the case of Mr Lonely I could quite happily harness those three men to the cart and drive them to death. I could quite happily

match every welt on that poor horse’s body with a matching one on theirs. RIP Mr Lonely. . The bastards who abused Mr Lonely in that manner should be treated in the same manner and left to die as he did. May they rot in hell! HH . Reading the shocking tale of Mr Lonely made me ponder on the utter cruelty of man. Animals give total love and obedience, asking for very little in return. Just a thought . In response to the SMS about the length of CrimeStop numbers, rather install the PanicGuard app and you only have to shake your phone to send an SMS, location and video.

. The London Times reports that South Africa is the only country in the world where affirmative action is to favour of the majority. . To the folk who gripe every week about companies: get real and contact them directly. I doubt that they take notice of your SMS in the paper. . Message to Minister Cwele: You can recognise foreign spies because they wear socks with sandals! . One day of stupid, dangerous fun is causing us a lifetime of heartache. Our dog ran away on Guy Fawkes. Although she was kept safely in the yard with the two others, she ran away. Its been almost a month now. Yes, your fun lasted for a few hours.

Idols winner hits the right notes I WAS saw the stage show This is my Life starring SA Idols winner, Karin Kortje, supported by the multi-talented Louqmaan Adams, at the Baxter Theatre. A visibly leaner Karin has come of age in her rendition of a candid and heart-wrenching account of her humble journey from the rural town of Grabouw. She gives an honest account of her tumultuous and stormy relationship with ex-boyfriend, convicted killer Cheslyn Williams, while belting out a repertoire of songs in the genre of Tina Turner. With multiple costume changes and hairstyles to match, Kortje sails through each song with ease and high-energy gusto, demanding several standing ovations, culminat-

ing in Shirley Bassey’s This is my Life. Kortje has great stage presence and vocal prowess to match. She was backed by a slick 9-piece band, the Elginaires. Speaking in her mother tongue, Afrikaans, tells the story of her musical career, starting from the age of 8 at the local Grabouw church, to the tribulations that nearly doomed her singing career. She has ‘come clean’ and director, Basil Appolis must be applauded. Producer Alistair Izobell is to be complimented for his latest offering This is my Life a must-see by all Cape Town musical theatre lovers – and bring along extra tissues MARK KLEINSCHMIDT

The Phantom strikes again TAMMY PETERSEN

A

S a child he dreamt of becoming a lawyer, but today the spotlight marks his place in the world – and it is not a court room. Kurt Haupt of Rondebosch has 10 years of acting experience under his belt and plans to stay at centre stage for years to come. The 35-year-old can be seen in Broadway’s longest running musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Op era, which opened at the Artscape last Tuesday. The story tells of a disfigured musical genius, known only as The Phantom, who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom makes her his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passion collide. Haupt plays Monsieur Reyer, the Opera’s chief répétiteur, or director, whom he describes as bossy, single-minded and “just like me.” He trained at the University of Cape Town and stumbled onto the stage by chance. “After my initial dream of becoming a lawyer, I decided

on music,” he says. “I taught myself to play the piano, an instrument about which I am extremely passionate.” Then the acting bug bit. Haupt completed art studies and stepped out from behind the curtain. “My first role was as Tony in West Side Story and I enjoyed every minute of it. But I also had my fair share of roles as a tree in the background.” Since then, Kurt has appeared on stage in London and Singapore in Carmen, Chi cago and the Rocky Horror Pic ture Show. But the thespian is in his element in the current production, describing the experience as “exhilarating and lekker.” “The opening night didn’t go as planned as the paint on the scenery hadn’t dried by the time we had to start. Wet paint would have damaged costumes, among other things. However, the show must go on and we gave a ‘concert version’ and all was well again,” he says, adding that night two went “much better.” “This is an extravaganza that shouldn’t be missed. I hope that as many people as possible get to see it.” It is an artistic feast of jaw-dropping scenery, exquisite costumes and breathtaking special effects. The season ends on 15 January 2012. Tickets cost from R125 via Computicket or (021) 421 7695.

TOP Afrikaans performers will share the stage at the Bakgat Somer Opskop on Saturday 10 December at the GrandWest Grand Arena. The star-studded line-up includes Bobby van Jaarsveld, Manie Jackson, Snotkop, Andriette Norman, Die Broers, Karlien van Jaarsveld and Andries Vermeulen. Headlining the show are Emo Adams and Steve Hofmeyr. Singer, dancer and actor Adams got his first break in the David Kramer and Taliep Petersen production District 6: The Musi cal, followed by Kat and the Kings. He appeared in KykNET’s Ali Barber in the role of Lovebite. He has released a debut album Tall, Dark and Afri kaans that includes Die Nuwe Oukraal

liedjie on which he collaborated with David Kramer. Singer, songwriter and actor, Hofmeyr has also gained international success since performing the 1997 duet with Belgian singer Dana Winner. You Don’t Bring Me Flowers reached number two on the Belgian charts and the pair thereafter performed to packed audiences in both countries. Hofmeyr’s multi-platinum albums earned him sales of one and a half million copies. Doors open at 19:00 and tickets are available from Computicket, priced between R150 and R240. Anyone under 12 pays R80. Special discounts are available for pensioners.

‘Tis the season to keep safe HANRIE BOSCH

CAPE TOWN summers are synonymous with sun, mountain hikes, blue flag beaches, cocktails, traffic jams on the road to Camps Bay, and an influx of strange accents and languages. However, for City officials and police this equates to drunk driving, run-away fires, mountain rescue operations, alcohol on beaches, drownings, litter and an increase in opportunistic theft as tourists flock to Cape Town. More than 80 000 visitors are expected to flock to the city centre on 4 December to watch the festive lights in Adderley Street being switched on. The biggest summer hotspot is Camps Bay, the busiest of Cape Town’s 73 beaches. “Alcohol consumption on beaches, traffic jams and theft out of motor vehicles and on the beaches are our main focus,” says Camps Bay Police spokesperson, Constable Zandile Makeleni. “Alcohol consumption on beaches causes serious problems, with broken glass in the sand, fights and even drowning,” says Richard Bosman, Executive Director for Safety and Security for Cape Town. He says that last year the greater city area had nine reported drownings. More than 250 lifeguards will be on duty at various beaches between 10:00 and 18:00, along with

284 lifeguards at the City’s 36 public swimming pools. More than 1 319 Metro Police, Traffic Services, Law enforcement and Specialised Services will be deployed across the city and 120 new positions in the law enforcement Department were filled to deal with the influx of visitors. Merle Collins, spokesperson for South African National Parks, says patrols on Table Mountain will be increased and a base radio has been installed in the Cape Town Central Police Operations Control room. This will improve the response time to incidents on the mountain. The dog squad has also grown to eight, with two new dogs joining the team soon. Visitor safety officers are not allowed to take leave during the festive season. Cape Town Police reservists will assist with patrols on the mountain, and more officers will work after hours. According to Captain Ezra October, spokesperson for Cape Town Central police station, they are increasing visibility in the precinct and bracing for the switching on of the Christmas lights, the marching of the Kaapse Klopse, the night markets in Adderley street (starting 17 December), parties in Long Street and New Year’s Eve. However, they are also concerend about the exodus of many Capetonians. “There is a shift in

SUMMER TIME: The holiday season is officially here, and soon beaches and tourist hotspots will be packed, keeping police hard at work to keep the silly season safe. Photo: Edrea Cloete crime around this time as many homes are empty and we increase patrols of the residential areas.” Traffic Services will conduct free basic vehicle safety checks at Gallows Hill in Green Point, from 10:00 to 14:00 each working day until 15 December, helping to ensure the safety of Capetonians on the road. Sea Point Police spokesperson Lieutenant Neil Daniels identified

Beach Road in Mouille Point as the crime hotspot of the area, and while special attention will be given to this area, patrols will be increased throughout the precinct. Runaway fires, started by discarded cigarette buds, illegal fires and glass, is anaother seasonal hazard. The City’s 826 Fire and Rescue Services personnel deal with more than 8 000 fires every year, most of which occur during

summer. For that reason 120 seasonal fire fighters will be employed on a contract basis during this period. The City has budgeted R10,6 million for cleansing during the festive season, with more than 1 290 extra cleaning staff. Refuse removal will continue uninterrupted even on public holidays, to ensure a clean city and to keep tourists flocking back next year.

Mayor backs national softball team per will be on the same platform as the foreign press, like it was during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. She said: “The role of community newspapers in public discourse cannot be underestimated. “It is important that both free sheets and dailies provide premium coverage of the JWWC,” she said. “People’s Post is privileged and proud to partner a sporting event of this magnitude and importance. Sport, as a positive alternative for young people, plays a more prominant role in today’s challenging times. “With the temptations of substance abuse as an outlet, sport offers a choice. We therefore fully support and applaud the efforts of all role players to bring this prestigious event to fruition,” said Miller-Isaacs. The JWWC starts on Wednesday 7 December and ends on Saturday 17 December. Tickets cost R20 per day and can be bought online at Computicket.

The ladies will represent the best of what young people can be, and make the right choices.” She also said that hosting the JWWC is an opportunity to give softball more exposure and to introduce young Capetonians to the sport. “Cape Town’s youth often face negative influences. Upgrading and maintaining sports facilities is one way in which we, as a caring city, provide alternative spaces where they can thrive,” she said. People’s Post also caught up with Grant Pascoe, Executive Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing. When asked what it would mean for the City, he said: “Tourism plays a major role in the economic growth of the City, and Cape Town is no doubt the tourist Mecca of South Africa. Events like these are major contributing factors.” Pascoe will attend most of the games and praised the softball reporting in People’s Post. “It is important that the smaller sports codes,

like softball, get the media coverage it deserves. These codes do not enjoy the benefits of corporate sponsorship and require the kind of exposure you are affording softball. “Your initiative to partner softball in this
