Illegal mechanical dealer cleared out and cars that were in the process of being stripped for spare parts. Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police, Constable Jerome Voegt, says the designated second hand goods officer has tried to assist the owner many times to obtain his licence. “The officer visited the owner many times to help him and explained all the processes involved in obtaining a license, yet he refused to comply. The officer has visited the owner five times since February to offer his assistance,” he says. The owner (45) was arrested for not having a license to operate his business. He has already been fined twice for running an illegal business. While informing him of the case against him, the owner tried to ex-

plain to the officer that he was running the business to provide food for his family. Meanwhile, other team members started the daunting task of carrying and loading engines and car parts onto the truck. Voegt adds the new Act is very particular and all second hand dealers must have a trading license. “The dealers must be able to provide a paper trail of how they obtained the goods in their possession. They should have the details of the buyers and sellers as many people are buying and selling stolen goods,” he says. Officers spent the whole day loading the parts while the family stood and watched in disbelief. Any second hand dealer needing assistance to obtain a license can call the station on (021) 370 1600.
