Serving others feeds their soul

cooking hearty meals to help impoverished Eastridge residents stave off the gnawing pangs of hunger this winter. Caroline Jacobs (61) and four other women have started a soup kitchen, and every Thursday at 15:00 in Malva Street, they feed over 120 people. Jacobs and the rest of the women hope to increase that number with the community’s help. They started the soup kitchen realising the high levels of poverty in the area are leaving many starving. They begin dishing out food once all the children have come from school. With many children knocking on her door for food in the afternoon, Jacobs saw the need for a soup kitchen. “It is heartsore to see children begging for food. My heart goes out to them,” she says. Sharon Austin is one of the women involved with the feeding scheme. She is committed to serving this community. “There is a great need for this kind of project here,” she says. However, the women say those who are drowning in poverty and need the assistance of others should not only rely on hand-outs.

NUTRITIOUS: Caroline Jacobs prepares a serving of oranges for those who come and get food at her home. She has been running a soup kitchen for four months and feeds about 120 people every week.

“Caroline is going out of her way to give all that people soup or food and she does so from the bottom of her heart. Any donations would help us continue the work we are doing and enable us to increase the number of people we feed,” Austin explains. Over 150 hungry people lined up outside the Eastridge home to get a warm plate of food last week. With six pots of pasta, lentil curry and vegetable stew, there was something for everyone. Jacobs’ experience in the catering indus-

try has helped her in this venture. “Luckily, I am accustomed to cooking big pots of food,” she explains. The group is calling on the community to assist them in feeding the hungry by donating food, gas or large pots. Volunteers dig into their own pockets to feed the less fortunate. Donations of legumes, non-perishables, meat, tomato paste, and other foods are welcome. V Anyone willing to donate can contact Sharon Austin on 0 (021) 397 6695 or email sharonaustin1958@ya hoo.com.
