RITE OF PASSAGE: “Ib hekile Evuzayo” (“Leak ing Calabash”), a lively musical with an in tensely local flavour, will run from tomorrow (Wednesday) to Satur day at the Artscape Are na, “giving a superb dis play of the richness that is in isiXhosa culture during the Artscape’s Imvelo Festival”, a spokesperson says. Narrated by an old man, the musical looks at how today’s young isiX hosa men perceive the rites of passage to man hood, and “raises ques tions in an entertaining way about the initiation practice in modern day South Africa”. Tickets cost R50; student, pen sioner and block book ing discounts are availa ble. Book through Com puticket, or Artscape DialaSeat on (021) 4217695. Photo: Paul Greenway

A taxing time for local traders TAMMY PETERSEN

S

O you think the taxman wears a suit, carries a briefcase and hands you an official letter when you evade handing over a part of you revenue? Think again – traders selling their wares at the Hanover Park terminus say they are being forced to hand over their hard-earned profits in a bid to keep gangsters off their backs. Local hawkers say the business hub has been controlled by gang members for years, but no one is brave enough to report the matter to the police. A trader, who spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity, says he has been paying this “tax” for years – since he was warned by a gangster to pay up or “face the consequences”. “Initially I was stubborn and told them that I wouldn’t hand over money I had worked

for,” he recalls. “They simply told me that I would see what would happen to me, but I told them they didn’t scare me. “Later that day, two guys ran past my stall and grabbed arms full of my stock, laughing as they taunted me while making their getaway. Nobody did or said anything – apparently they’ve all been through it.” He says the daylight robbery continued for a few weeks before he gave in and started paying R50 every few days. “That guy who first demanded tax from me walked past the stall every day, smirking at me. I knew he was behind it, but I refused to give in. But eventually my loss came to over R500, and I agreed to pay. They have left me in peace ever since.” A trader, who is so afraid of being fingered that he pleaded with People’s Post not even to mention what he sells, says the hawkers have been held to ransom by gangs for years. “When they notice a new face, they come you and warn you to pay ‘tax’ if you want

your business to be safe. The way they approach you sends shivers down your spine – it’s like something from the Mafia movies. I don’t know of anyone who has ever told them to get lost. Almal is te bang.” He explains that he has made an arrangement with “the taxman” that he can take whatever he wants from his stall, no questions asked. “I had to explain to him that I have a family to support and rent to pay. I don’t make a lot of money here – sometimes I go home with R50 for the day. I had no choice – it’s either that or worry about your safety.” Another vendor, who has been selling her wares at the bustling market for over 17 years, says that if it wasn’t for the respect the “skollies” have for her, she would probably have been conned out of her “bietjie pennies” as well. “They don’t bother with me because they know I will tell them where to get off. But it makes me so sad to see what they are turning

this terminus into. They harass the people who are only here to earn a living. But because everyone is too scared to take a stand, nothing will ever change,” she says sadly. Warrant Officer Ettienne Conradie, spokesperson for the Philippi police, says he has heard whispers about extortion at the terminus, but because no one has approached the police or laid a formal charge, no docket can be opened. “It is important that the traders take that step and report what is happening. There is a police vehicle at the terminus at least once a day, and all complaints are handled confidentially,” he says. “They have to lay a charge so that the police can intervene. They can phone the station on (021) 690-1500 and we will gladly follow up.”

Support to kick drug habit THE 4 Steps Support Group, which works to help addicts and their families, turned one year old this month. The group was launched in September last year when members realised there was a need for a simple programme to help people cope with the disastrous effects of addiction. Through the spiritual programme, members work to instil a sense of responsibility in their charges. People with addiction attend meetings with their families with the aim of rebuilding broken relationships. Six support groups have been set up so far

– four in Mitchell’s Plain, one in Hanover Park and one in Belhar, with one due to start in Manenberg shortly – and members have already addressed about 10 church gatherings and five community meetings in the past year. The programme also reaches youths awaiting criminal hearings. The main group meets in Westridge High School every Saturday from 15:00 until 16:30, and attendance is free. Shots fly in Third Avenue TAMMY PETERSEN

T

HREE shots pierced the Friday night silence when three men attempted to rob the home of a Rondebosch East business owner as he returned from work. However, the man’s determination to protect his family and assets scared the robbers off, with two of them being nabbed in Third Avenue after a quick response from the Lansdowne police. Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, the station’s spokesperson, says the businessman pulled into his driveway at 21:40, and his wife and seven-year-old son came out to help him unload groceries from the car. “They became aware of a commotion outside in the street, and noticed three men approaching them. One of the men pulled out a gun and told him that he was going to shoot the businessman, to which he responded that he, too was armed.” The man’s family ran into the house and

the gunman pointed his gun at the man and fired a single shot at close range at his upper body – but the bullet missed. “The businessman then fired a warning shot into the ground, and the perpetrator fired a second shot, missing again. The other two men then ran into the house while the gunman and the businessman faced off outside.” But the man saw the duo making their way into his home and followed suit. Inside, the resident “grabbed one” and “the two wrestled”, Lakey says. The other robber in the home, who was unarmed, fled at this point, and was followed by the second, who managed to break free from the businessman’s grip. “The two fled on foot, and the gunman was missing when the man got outside,” Lakey says. The police had already been alerted, and upon their arrival they spotted the two unarmed men trying to make a getaway. “The officers caught the men in the street and arrested them. The third suspect, who is in possession of a firearm, is still at large.” Two men, aged 21 and 24, both from Athlone, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Monday) on a charge of attempted robbery.

A 26-YEAR-OLD man appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of being possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. This after police confiscated a gun and a load of ammunition at his Manenberg flat last week. He was arrested on Wednesday when Manenberg police officers and the Intelligence Unit searched the home in response to a tip-off from the public “During the execution of the search warrant inside a flat in Beatrix Court, officers found one 9mm pistol with 13 rounds in a magazine, and 27 rounds of various calibre,” says Warrant Officer November Filander, provincial police spokesperson. “On the roof of the flat they found one R1 magazine with eight rounds and 25 9mm rounds.” Bail of R1 000 was granted, but the suspect could not afford the amount and he was taken to Pollsmoor Prison.

Drug Detective to help wipe out scourge ANDRE BAKKES

CAPE TOWN’s police could have a far simpler, more “innovative and effective” way of testing people for drug use at their disposal. The Drug Detective Test Kit, which has been used extensively overseas, is fairly new in South Africa, with only some police dog units in Johannesburg having purchased it so far. Diep River Police Station is the latest addition to the list of users, and if all goes well, other stations could also pick up on the trend. Drug Detective representative Michali Evlambiou has only recently started to sell the kits in Cape Town, with his focus currently falling on law-enforcement agencies, but he says soon he will start selling the kit to the public, including schools and businesses. With the use of the kit, police will simply “wipe” a small sponge over any surface that has been touched by a suspected drug user, and within minutes the equipment will reveal the presence of any drugs in the sample. Warrant Officer Keith Chandler, Diep River police spokesperson, elaborates:

“America and Europe have been using it for about three years. “It has been tested, and I would say it works 100% of the time. We will almost immediately know if someone has used or handled narcotics.” He emphasises, though, that the kits will only be used as a tool to help officers in their investigations. “We won’t just use it randomly, at say road blocks, for example. There must be a suspicion that someone might be using narcotics first.” According to Chandler, the results of most drug tests take several days to return, so the speed of these kits is a big plus. He also says it is much easier and less personal to just wipe a surface than get a urine or blood sample. Evlambiou says he has started putting “feelers” out to other police stations in the Southern Peninsula. “According to me it is difficult for police to say they don’t need it. Companies and parents are also interested,” he says. Evlambious says the test is incredibly accurate, because it can reveal traces of drugs – left by drug users on everything they touch, from tabletops to clothing – on a nanogram (denoting ten billionths of a

gram) level. Once a wiped sample has been taken, a chemical breaks down any offending compounds present and offers a result in 10 minutes. Both Evlambiou and Chandler are confident that the results will hold up in a court of law, provided that they are accompanied by a comprehensive laboratory report to back the findings up. The kit can reveal whether a person has used one or more of substances, including dagga, ecstasy, methcathinone, amphetamines such as speed, tik, cocaine and crack, and opiates like morphine, heroin and codeine. The 10 Diep River kits were purchased two weeks ago with funds donated by the Bergvliet, Kreupelbosch, Meadowridge (BKM) Watch Trust. According to the company’s website, Drug Detective has utilised and has at its disposal the “most sophisticated research and development laboratories across Europe and the United States, and was invented by a group of dedicated scientists in the forensic and biochemistry fields”. For more information contact Evlambiou on michali@webmail.co.za or go to www.drugfreesolutions.co.za.

Multimillion rand ‘scam’ exposed REYANA STEYN

A WELL-KNOWN jeweller has been arrested and charged with theft in connection with an alleged scam involving millions of rands’ worth of jewellery.

thousands of rands, again. In a move that shocked the community, Ferial Bobat (53) owner of Damjee Jewellers, was arrested after 63 cases of theft and fraud were opened against her at Athlone Police Station. The Damjee Jewellers outlets in Rylands and Cavendish Square in Claremont have since closed, allegedly due to bankruptcy. Athlone officers arrested Bobat on Saturday 10 September from her Rondebosch East home, says Constable Zita Norman, Athlone police spokesperson. She appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court shortly thereafter, and was detained for a further seven days. She appeared in court again yesterday (Monday), and her case was postponed to Friday 30 September for bail application. She remains in custody. Anyone who may have information valuable to the case is urged to call the investigating officer, Constable Alvin Fortuin, on (021) 697-9241/00.

I was so furious – it would have been a gift to my son’s bride

Scores of people say they have lost priceless family heirlooms, and the estimated value of missing gems and items wrought of white gold and platinum sits at millions. Some people spoke to People’s Post about their losses on condition of anonymity. One woman says she hasn’t seen her jewellery for a month. “I was so furious, as the jewellery would have been used as a gift to my son’s bride.” The woman says she eventually resorted to contacting the police, and she’s still in the dark about what has happened to her precious jewellery. Another complainant wonders whether she will ever see her gold bangles, worth

New signage to unlock the grid THE Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) and the City of Cape Town have joined forces to test a new street sign system in the city centre. The pilot project sees the addition of a street number range on the street signs of some of the city’s longer and busier roads to help people establish whether they should turn left or right to reach their destinations. Says the CCID’s Tasso Evangelinos, “Because the city has many heritage buildings of differing shapes and sizes, the numbering often does not correlate between one side of the road and the other, and this can sometimes be confusing.” The project is being piloted at three busy spots in the city – where Bree Street intersects with Wale, Strand and Riebeeck Streets. The new street signs can be found

at all four corners of these intersections. “The project will be open to receive comments for the next three months,” says Johan de Beer, Cape Town’s District Road engineer. “We then hope to roll it out across the city’s CBD within 12 months after that – obviously budget-dependent – starting at heavy traffic spots.” The project is expected to cost up to R1 million over the next few years. “There are obvious benefits to this project,” De Beer continues. “Besides saving people time and money, it also saves the city from a greater carbon footprint, as motorists don’t circle the city ad nauseam, but drive more directly to their destination.” Send your comments on the initiative to info@capetowncid.co.za.

New ear for local matters TAMMY PETERSEN

D

O YOU HAVE any ideas on how to improve your area? Do your solutions to local problems show potential? Then give your new proportional representative councillor a call – he would love to hear what you think. Majidie Abrahams, former Lansdowne Community Policing Forum chairperson, recently stepped into a new seat as a ward representative after being elected by the ANC to be its face within Ward 60 for the next four years. “I think this will be the start of a great relationship between me and the people of the greater Lansdowne area,” the former shop steward says. “There is lots to be done within our streets, and I think it’s time to get down to business.” By no means a stranger to locals, Abrahams grew up in Lansdowne, and has never left his hometown. He completed his schooling at Oaklands High, and is a qualified labour lawyer who previously worked with, among others, the South African Metal Workers’ Union, and was part of the United Democratic Front during the anti-apartheid struggle. Locally, he was active in the Lansdowne Youth Movement, which fought against segregation as an affiliate to the UDF. One of the main projects Abrahams wishes to tackle is the situation at Flamingo Crescent, which he says has “never been properly addressed”. “Something has to be done to move these residents out of this settlement and into decent, dignified homes. Inevitably, as much as Flamingo Crescent is a thorn in many residents’ sides, these people didn’t ask to be there.” He says he plans to form a relationship with the Department of Social Development, which has been trying to bring about positive changes for the shack dwellers, especially in terms of getting their youngsters into school. “There is lots of work to be done. The informal settlement is there and we have to deal with it. But instead of just complaining, let’s make positive changes, have hard dialogue and find solutions that can be beneficial to them and to the area as a whole.” The current state of local parks and public open spaces is also something that should be addressed, he continues. “The areas need to be cleaned and maintained, because they have clearly seen better days. My hope is that the residents will become involved and pitch in to clean up their neck of the woods.”

ACTION: Majidie Abrahams is ready to tackle his new position as proportional representa tive councillor for Ward 60. Photo: People’s Post Sick and tired of the washed out look of the clinic, civic centre and library? So is Abrahams. “An upgrade is long overdue. About a year back there was talk of giving it a bit of a facelift, but talk has died down again. This has been on local wish lists for a while, and it’s time that talk stops and work starts.” Abrahams encourages anyone with council-related problems, queries or solutions to contact him on 071 183 9421. He adds that he is setting up office in Lansdowne, and that he will be open to discussion with residents when he will hold a mass meeting within the next month.

The mandate of the spirit THE Full Gospel Church of God in Southern Africa will host its 2011 national spiritual conference, “Advancing the Mandate”, from today (Tuesday) until Thursday at the His People Church in N1 City. Dr Basil Tryon and bishop Tudor Bismark have been invited to speak at the

conference. Registration for guests happens today at 08:00; attendance costs R100. The conference will start today at 11:00, while on Wednesday and Thursday it will start at 09:00. Church services will be at 19:30. For more information call (021) 9113759 or visit www.fullgospelsa.co.za.

DID you know that “Idols” judge and radio personality Randall Abrahams grew up in Lansdowne? As a child, he lived in Albert Road.

NOTICE OF A MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN A meeting of the Council of the City of Cape Town will be held on Wednesday 28 September 2011 at 10:00 in the Council Chamber, 6th Floor, Podium Block, Civic Centre, 12 Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town. Tragic end to new beginning HIS WAS supposed to be the year that she would finally be able to get back on her feet and provide her children with the things she couldn’t previously afford. But in less than an hour, Desiree Prince was back to where she was two years ago. Her Hanover Park home went up in flames in the early hours of Wednesday morning

IRREPARABLE: The Princes’ hardearned fridge was so badly damaged the door can no longer open.

We used to talk about what we would do when I sorted our home out, about the fun we would have and the outings we would go on. Now I’m thinking about how I’m going to rebuild all this,” she says. Snyders says he feels for the family, as he had seen how Desiree transformed the simple

wooden house into “a real home”. “She and the children were so comfortable and happy in there. It’s so sad to see this happen to them.” But Desiree squares her shoulders, and a sad smile suddenly appears on her face. “Sometimes life knocks you down,” she whispers. “Now it’s time for me to get back up.” . Anyone able to help the Prince family with furniture, food or clothes is asked to phone her on 073 725 7900.

when a candle, lit by a neighbour who was without electricity, fell over and started the inferno. Desiree, a secretary for an accounting firm, says she woke up with a start after hearing screams shortly after 05:00 that day. “Someone started shouting that the house was on fire, and I immediately jumped up and woke up my girls,” she explains. Drowsy and confused, the children – aged 13, 10 and 4 – listened in shock as their mother told them to leave the Wendy house and go to the Athone Walk council flat her landlady lives in. She then followed suit, bumping into Mark Snyders, who lives inside the house. “He said the neighbours’ shack was on fire, and he grabbed a hosepipe to fight the flames,” Desiree says. “When I realised what was happening, I phoned 10111, and the operator phoned the fire brigade.” Unaware of the extent of the damage outside, she sat with her children in a bid to calm them. “When the fire engine arrived and doused the flames, I thought I might have suffered some minor losses, but that everything would be okay. But when I stepped out of the house and looked at where my home used to be, I just saw smoke and nothingness.” Overcome with grief, Desiree broke down in tears, shocked that she no longer had a place to call home. “Everything was gone. Our beds, cupboards, photos, food – everything. Just like that. Even the frame of my house was barely standing.” But the person she is most worried about is her eldest daughter, who is currently writing exams. “She is a top achiever and placed second in her grade last term,” she says. “Just weeks ago, she told me she is going to be number one. Now she doesn’t even have a book to

A question of convenience REYANA STEYN

MEMBERS of Muslims Against Illegitimate Leaders (MAIL) are outraged at a proposal to build a row of convenience stores in Athlone – they claim that crime and riotous behaviour will increase if the development goes ahead – but the applicant says he has the area’s best interests at heart. Kantielal Jeram-Patel, who owns Galaxy, one of the oldest clubs in Cape Town, says the convenience stores and residential units he plans to build would benefit the community, create jobs and alleviate the housing crisis. The row of shops is planned to be built between College and Pooke Roads in Rylands. Jeram-Patel intends to demolish his home to make way for them as the land is “the best area for the building to commence, according to town planners”, he says. The shops are to include a butchery, restaurant, bakery and pharmacy. Twelve homes are planned to be built behind the stores. A total of 230 parking bays are proposed, and Jeram-Patel says 24-hour security and CCTV cameras will be put in place. Abduragman Khan, spokesperson for MAIL, a civil rights movement established in 2000, says the stores aren’t needed in the area. “We already have Vangate Mall, and Gatesville and Rylands are filled with stores. We don’t need more shops. Along with those shops comes crime, and that we don’t want in our area. Those shops are

close enough for residents to go to, and another will not be necessary.” Khan says residents also worry that the stores will attract crime and cause traffic congestion. “We find that stores such as these draw vagrants and crime to the area. Also, when trucks come to offload their goods, the roads are blocked, causing problems for residents. Jeram-Patel begs to differ: “The 24-hour security and CCTV cameras will ensure that no criminal activity will take place. The centre and the residential units will be fully secure. The aim is to see to the residents’ needs,” he says. “I have been a Rylands resident for 46 years, and I see the need for the stores. If they are coming home from work and need something, they can quickly pop into the stores and get it with no hassles, as the parking bays will ensure that there will be no traffic problems.” Jeram-Patel says he and his family plan to live in two of the proposed residential units themselves, and would not do so if they weren’t confident about the development. In response to Khan’s call to the area’s councillor to have the development stopped, Jeram-Patel says residents’ concerns, gathered during the public participation process required for the development, are now being considered by the City of Cape Town. Area councillor Magadien Davids says objections will be reviewed, and the City will make its decision on the development based on the community’s best interests and the proposal’s adherence to legislation.

a sound work ethic and are eager to enter the mainstream world of work.” Because the school depends solely on sponsorship, management is unable to pay for fully qualified teachers to provide the students with lessons. However, the committed volunteers who are available do a sterling job of preparing the students for the real world. “One of the main needs of the school is for local volunteers to come and share their skills with the students. We don’t want to see them stay within their comfort zone and never know what it is to be empowered and fully able to take care of themselves. They are eager to learn to do new things, but we need skilled people to share their knowledge in their specific field and help the deaf prove that they can do anything they set their minds to.” The school is also in need of funding to cover day to day costs, as well as to realise its dream of securing its own premises. Al-Waagah is currently renting a facility in Sunnyside, Athlone, but requires additional space in which to establish a preschool for younger students. Anyone able to donate to the institute, or who is interested in employing one of the pupils, can contact De Wet on 082 461 8222.

HEY watch TV and understand the plot without hearing the characters’ voices, they can take care of themselves, and they easily make friends and have vibrant personalities. They’re just like everyone else – except they can’t hear. While inroads have been made into incorporating physically disabled people into the workplace, an organisation is championing the cause of the deaf so that they, too, can easily enter the corporate world. Al-Waagah, formerly known as the Oasis Deaf Society, was established in 1995 and has been bridging the gap between the deaf and the hearing for the past 16 years. Cassiem de Wet, chairperson of Al-Waagah, says the institute was established owing to a lack of religious exposure to Muslims who couldn’t hear, and who were thus deprived of Islam’s teachings. “We have grown from being a madrassa to exposing participants to everything from craft lessons to computer classes, as we would like to see them become fully fledged, active members of society. We focus on teaching them skills that will inevitably help them to sustain themselves.” What started as a religious school consisting of only 10 registered members has grown into a school made up of over 200 students. “They come from all over Cape Town – from Mitchell’s Plain to Lansdowne, Athlone to Delft. We have devoted sponsors who collect the students, free of charge, who have been with us since 1997. We have a small but committed team, both hearing and deaf, who are fully focused on seeing the institute flourish,” De Wet says. Past projects include sewing and creative handwork for skills development, computer classes, learner driver’s licence classes, mosaic art lessons and religious orientation classes. “Our goal is to see our students go out into the world and function on their own. We do our best to equip them with skills to help them find employment, but not many businesses are open to giving them a chance. One of the students from Al-Waagah has been employed at the factory at which I work, and he has been doing exceptionally well. His supervisor reckons he’s one of his best workers,” he says proudly. De Wet feels that the ideal jobs for the deaf students passing through Al-Waagah are those involving repetitive tasks that are average in difficulty. “It is important that people realise that there is absolutely nothing wrong with these students intellectually. They are as able as anyone else to do a job, but their only disability involves not be- NOT SEW EASY: Student Saban Abrahams shows ing able to hear what is happening his mettle behind a sewing machine. around them. Heritage alive THIS weekend local will be lekker and we South Africans, will celebrate that which makes us all unique people of the South. Ja, vryf maar blink daai vuvuzelas because in four days time we honour who we are, no with no frills, and some fuss, as is probably typical of South Africans. Heritage Day on 24 September, may to some seem arbitrary, and to others only a convenient excuse for another public holiday, but in reality it is really a time to reflect on those who have come before us, what we are, and who we want to be. With Africa recognised as the “cradle of mankind,” it seems only fitting that we live up to holding our heritage dear, recognising cultural significance in our own lives. What is South African culture though? And are the traditions and beliefs of our forefathers something valuable and relevant for the future? South African culture is diverse. Every one of them valuable and important in their own right. During the World Cup in 2010 we locals seemed visibly proud of who we are as a people and country. Mirror socks were out in full force, and even local jalopies took to the streets soos watse presidential cars, proudly donning South African flags. So this weekend why not show a bit of the same patriotism? Tied in with Braai Day – an activity most South Africans are more than familiar with, why not commemorate your past and toast the future by tossing a chop or two on the coals. Our heritage and culture has in some way shaped the people we are today, and as South Africans we have never been better equipped to make our mark in the global arena, and thereby leave a new legacy, which will one day in turn become someone else’s heritage.

Your SMSes Upset after toilet paper trouble I RECENTLY purchased a 1x60 toilet paper value pack at a shop in Gatesville. The packaging did not display the manufacturer’s name, address, telephone number or fax number. The rolls had 500 sheets. This is false advertising. The toilet rolls had no perforations, and were wound slackly in order to create the appearance that they were of normal diameter. In fact, the toilet paper was so loose that it telescoped off the cardboard spool. I later discovered that the company is called Carece Tissues and is situated in Athlone Industry near the Coca-Cola factory. MS BEUKES Lansdowne

MR KHAN OF CARECE TISSUES MANUFACTURERS RESPONDS: While there should be no excuse that the customer had this bad experience with our product, we have recently moved premises and undergone management changes. This, coupled with new staff, could have resulted in oversights in our product process, in our haste to catch up on production schedules, which we are still struggling to meet. We take cognisance of the fact that Ms Beukes is a pensioner and that she works on a very strict budget, and because we caused het this inconvenience, we request that she supply her address, so that we may deliver a batch of toilet paper to her to compensate her.

Shark Boy goes for gold LYNN PRINS

ACHMAT HASSIEM of Strandfontein experienced the stuff of maritime nightmares five years ago when he lost his right leg to a 4,7m great white shark – but he didn’t allow the life-changing attack to vanquish his dreams. Achmat, famously known as “Shark Boy”, lost his leg during a training session with the False Bay Surf Lifesaving Club in Muizenberg, where he worked as a lifeguard. He noticed the great white going after his younger brother Taariq – and bravely drew the shark’s attention to himself, ending up in a face-to-maw battle with the fearsome predator. Despite the loss of his leg to the creature, Achmat retained his resolution to excel. He continued swimming, and started competing with the help and inspiration of South African swimming legend Natalie du Toit. “She trained me for the first few days, and then left me in the hands of Brian Button, coach of Dolphin Aquatics at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands,” Achmat recalls. Thanks to Button’s efforts and Achmat’s own drive, the swimmer has smashed records in both SA and Africa at large, and reached his dream of joining the South African team in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. Achmat has just returned home from the All Africa Games, which took place in Maputo, Mozambique, from the beginning of the month to Sunday. He competed in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley – and set another record (55:65) for the 100m freestyle, placing him in the top eight in this class in the world. He left Mozambique richer by a gold medal and two silver medals, as well as personal best times in all three of his races. Earlier this month he also came out tops in Canada, where he represented the South

African Paralymic team in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championship in Edmonton. The team qualified for the Paralympics in London next year. “My goal was well achieved in Canada,” Achmat says. “I went there to qualify in my strongest event, which is the 100m butterfly. The qualifying time was 1:04, and I managed a 1:00:09,” he explains; he is currently ranked in the world’s top five for 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle. Now, Shark Boy is training for a competition in Brazil from Sunday 9 to Saturday 15 October. To keep up to date with his exploits, follow @achmathassiem on Twitter or visit www.achmat.com.

Tuesday 20 September 2011

Pieterse, who holds her head high amid a host of personal difficulties, spoke before a packed auditorium at a workshop organised earlier this month by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) in conjunction with Runner’s World magazine. UCT’s sports science professor Tim Noakes, who was MC at the workshop, welcomed Pieterse and expressed the tremendous honour it was to have her speak. Mike Finch (editor of Runner’s World), Dr Ross Tucker (consultant scientist at SSISA) and Professor Tim Noakes all agree that Pieterse’s “indomitable spirit, complete honesty, humility and love of the simple things in life” shone through with incredible clarity. While her talent, determination and sheer hard work earned her the world cross-country titles in 1985 and 1986, the European 3 000m championship in 1985, a world record of 14:48:07 in the 5 000m and a world indoor record in the 3 000m in 1986, winning was never her motivation. “I run to be at peace,” she explained.

Noakes described Zola as one of the strongest women he would ever meet. While most people would have crumbled, faced with the adversities that crossed her path in her mid-forties, Zola’s life is a true success story, Noakes said. Pieterse said time and maturity have given her insight into dealing with the challenges she faces. While she can’t change the challenges, she can change her attitude, she said, and described some of her happiest moments as the time spent with her three children. And Pieterse still runs, clocking up about 80km a week, and she can still churn out a 36-minute time in a 10km race. She is in training to tackle the Comrades next year. With her engaging smile, she elaborated: “No one in SA recognises you as a runner if you haven’t run Comrades – so I have to do one!” Noakes describes her as the most iconic athlete yet produced in South Africa. “This is exactly it – the most enduring quality of Zola is her incredible humility. As South Africans, we can be incredibly proud of having people of Zola’s calibre who we can call our own – and it was a great pleasure to hand to her a Zola-branded, Springbok rugby jersey.”

SUPERB display of rugby on Saturday has Springbok supporters on a definite high – the Boks really showed how champions play the game. Great rugby was played overall on Saturday, with even Ireland coming to the party and beating Australia, making for the first upset of the tournament. And all the Boks played with heart, working to defend their title as the champs, and secured a victory against Fiji. The weekend’s rugby was un-

characteristic. New Zealand annihilated Japan 83-7 on Friday, Argentina whipped Romania 43-8 on Saturday, with Ireland beating Australia 15-6 on the same day. On Sunday, France thrashed Canada 46-19 after a fierce battle, England beat Georgia 41-10, and Wales fought hard for a 17-10 victory against Samoa. With all the excitement underway, People’s Post hopes the rules explained last week came in handy, since the matches featured quite a few rucks and mauls. This week People’s Post will focus on knock-ons, offside, and forward passes.

Knock-ons These occur when a player accidentally mishandle the ball and knocks it forward with his hands or arms. The player is allowed to try and regain control. If he can catch it before it touches another player or the ground, he can play on. Otherwise it is a “knock-on” and play may be stopped. In a position where possession of the ball is lost, a scrum is set, with the non-offending team getting the scrum feed. If you intentionally knock on, you may be penalised. If what you did prevents a probable

try, a penalty try may be awarded. Offside: A player is offside in general play if he is in front of a teammate who is carrying the ball, or in front of a teammate who last played the ball. The aim is to stay behind the ball. Forward pass: Occurs when an illegal pass is thrown to a player who is ahead of the ball; a player is not allowed to pass the ball forward to a teammate. • On Thursday, South Africa takes on neighbouring country Namibia in Auckland at 10:00. Next week People’s Post will focus on penalties.

ANGUISH: The Kaizer Chiefs made no attempt to hide their dismay when Ajax scored their second goal to seal the win during the teams’ league clash at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday. The Urban Warriors put in a brave performance against the visiting team, who were on the hunt for a win after they lost their MTN8 final match against Pirates on Saturday 10 September. PRIZE TIE: The final match in the Santos woman’s challenge between Bir mingham City and Cape Town Roses did not take place on Sunday as planned due to waterlogged pitches. The two teams shared the trophy and prize money of R15 000. Seen here, back row, from left: Joslyn Davis (Engen), Malika Allie (Santos director) and Goolam Allie (Santos chairperson). Turfhall on the ball with facelift LYNN PRINS

C

ONFIDENT local organising committee, alongside chairperson Noore Nacerodien, have said construction work is coming along well at Turfhall Stadium despite the rain. The Turfhall Softball Stadium is undergoing an extensive facelift, and is to get a new secondary competition field , compliments of the project’s major partner, the City of Cape Town (“Softball tourney plans on track”, People’s Post, 16 August).

“I think the contractors are superb,” Nacerodien says. “Today [Friday] I went and I could see the progress taking place. Unfortunately, the rain held back outside work, such as the dugouts, but the fields are looking good.” Nacerodien says major internal works are being done, with a new change room for umpires, an upgraded medical facility, a new president’s lounge, and many other smaller improvements, like new doors and windows. “The only setback that will have a negative impact on the event is the lack of funds,” Nacerodien says.

“Approaches were made to 52 top corporates in our country, with all but two declining to get involved in the event – an event that fits perfectly into the transformation of our country’s young women.” Nacerodien’s makes no effort to temper his bitterness on the matter: “While we are all patriotic towards our national teams, like the Springboks, the companies that survive from the man on the street cast aside the so-called ‘minnow’ sports. “The young South African lady feels as thrilled to represent her country as Bakkies Botha.”

Still, Nacerodien and the rest of the committee are adamant they will be able to represent an event of the highest standards, and he believes the event will build on the profile South Africa developed with the 2010 Football World Cup. Turfhall Stadium, home of Western Province Softball in Crawford, Athlone, will host teams from 16 countries for 11 days during the ninth Junior Women’s World Championship (JWWC), taking place from Wednesday 7 until Saturday 17 December. “With 77 days to go, the vibe is

starting to show amongst the softball family in Cape Town and across the country”, Nacerodien adds. The local organising committee says the new and improved Turfhall Softball Complex will be a world-class facility to be proud of, and will be protected against vandalism. The planned date for the completion and handover of the facility to the JWWC local organising committee is 12 November, with local super league games taking place on Saturday 19 and Saturday 26 November to test the surface.
