Joanne Road a ‘red light district’

TAMMY PETERSEN

A

DRIVE-THROUGH brothel – this is how residents of Joanne Road, Lansdowne, describe their street owing to the number of “working girls” plying their trade in the “once decent” neighbourhood. Locals say that over the festive season, an increased number of prostitutes was noted, and although the holiday season is over, even more ladies of the night have been creeping into this section of the suburb. While the City of Cape Town says that numerous fines have been issued to women selling their bodies during recent months, residents are appealing for a more concerted effort to rid the area of the scourge. A pensioner, who has been living in the street for over 10 years, says that in recent years, he could count on one hand how many prostitutes were “working this street”.

“Then, for some unknown reason, there was a sudden influx of badly dressed bimbos who started clogging this street. At one point, during December, I stood at my gate and counted them. “There were 14 of them parading on our sidewalks!” He says he reported the matter to the Metro Police, who managed to “get rid” of them. “But the next day, the rash was back. They are like a sickness that you can’t get rid of. Their customers park their cars in front of our homes – sometimes even in our driveways – and just do as they please. I don’t know what can be done anymore. This is like a legal sex sale in a red-light district.” Another resident, who asks not to be named, says that when the local police warn them to “move along”, they simply walk around the block and “resume their position”. “They refuse to stay away. I don’t know why they chose to infest this road but for some reason this is where they prefer to

ply their trade. “It seems that they aren’t even embarrassed of what they do anymore,” he said. On more than one occasion he has been forced to blast “those women” with his hosepipe, he continues. “It’s the only way to get them to go. But they don’t leave without making a scene – they can spend hours just standing outside and hurling abuse at us. They have no respect – for themselves or the decent people who live here.” A single mother claims that the women “clog the road around the clock”. “I don’t know what to say to my children when they ask what those aunties are doing outside our house, so I tell them that they are waiting for a lift. They are such an embarrassment. They disgrace themselves with their behaviour and put us, as ratepayers, in a bad light. Where are the authorities who should be keeping them from making a spectacle in a residential area?” Nathan Ladegourdie, assistant chief of the City’s Vice Squad, says Joanne Road

is one of three Lansdowne streets which have been noted as priority areas. “We have ascertained that, owing to a constant presence in Lansdowne Road and around Wetton Circle, the offenders are filtering into the surrounding streets to avoid being caught,” he explains. “However, we will be expanding our operations to include these sections in our regular patrols to clear this concentration.” Ladegourdie adds that despite focused operations being planned for this area, other local hotspots will not be neglected. “Lansdowne Road, from the bridge to the circle, is an area known for prostitution. Special attention will still be given to this section and residents are urged to continue informing us of any suspicious activity.”

Minstrels Champs of Champs cancelled TAURIQ HASSEN

ALTHOUGH the minstrel season got off to a good start, organisers now face having to cancel the prestigious “Champs of Champs” after discovering that a holy day for Muslims takes place a week before the finals.

IN ORDER: The Golden Dixies Minstrels lone Stadium.

This means the competition dates will have to be rescheduled, but this creates a problem as the soccer action returns to Athlone Stadium on Saturday 18 February. Moulood takes place on Saturday 4 February, which means that the competition will have to be postponed. Kevin Momberg, chief executive for the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association, initially confirmed the new headache last week and said: “We are still looking to discuss the matter in detail, but it’s looking more likely that the Champs of Champs will have to be cancelled due to the venue not being available.” Richard Stemmet, chairperson for the CTMCA, was not disappointed at the prospect of having march around Ath the event postponed until next year, as

he felt that respecting the community’s holy days and events should be the “number one priority”. “We are now setting up meetings with the different captains and generals in order to inform them about the postponement of the event, but generally we are happy and will respect the community,” says Stemmet. Now confirmed, the final day of the minstrel season will be at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday 11 February, where events such as the group songs and exhibition marches will be held. Normally, at the end of proceedings, the champions are named, with the coveted Carnival Trophy being handed to a deserving troupe, among many other prizes for events performed over recent weeks. “That is really what everybody looks forward to and we end the minstrel season on a high and look forward to hosting yet another successful event next year,” Stemmet added. He confirmed that all teams under the CTMCA carrying marching permits will be allowed to parade their trophies through areas such as the historic Bo-Kaap area and Lentegeur in SHINING BRIGHT: Uzair and Shameegh Kemp during the Happy Mitchell’s Plein. Boy’s Entertainers road march.

CAPETONIANS have a new way of reporting municipal problems and it happens at the click of a button. Mobilitate is an online platform that allows people to register at no cost and to report municipal issues such as faulty streetlights or potholes by using Google Maps to pin-point the exact location. Mobilitate notifies the relevant municipality and also the ward councillor in question. All the communication and updates happen in one place visible for everybody to see. To date, 103 issues have been reported in Cape Town, of which 90 have been fixed. According to Mobilitate spokesperson Zelda Potgieter, the City of Cape Town responds to Mobilitate issues quickly and gives feedback and updates. “It has only been a few months since Cape Town started to actively participate on Mobilitate and we want to congratulate them for using the function that other metros have shown interest in but have not yet fully committed to. The City of Cape Town has not just shown interest, it has really risen to the occasion,” said Potgieter. Mobilitate has also created infrastructure for all 4 277 wards in the country, enabling ward councillors, proportional councillors, ward committees and their constituents to participate. A link to all of the Cape Town ward councillors can be found on www.mobilitate.co.za. People can also access the site via iPhone and Android.

Prepare for common takeover TAMMY PETERSEN

DARK CLOUD LOOMS: Law enforcement as well as police officers are expected to descend on Rondebosch Com mon this weekend as thousands of people from poorer areas plan to attend an illegal summit.Photo: AdriAnn Peters

T

HOUSANDS of people from poorer communities are expected to attend a mass-meeting and “take over” Rondebosch Common recreational area during the weekend – despite no authorisation being granted for the gathering. Although the City has warned that the meeting will be regarded as an illegal gathering and organisers may face criminal prosecution, plans for the occupation are being finalised and contributors are determined to go ahead, despite the repercussions. Participants from Hanover Park, Pinati Estate, Mitchell’s Plain, Manenberg, Lavender Hill, Hout Bay, Gugulethu, Athlone, Bonteheuwel, Delft and even Stellenbosch, will march from the Athlone Stadium to the common, for the three-day summit on Friday. Topics to be covered during the summit includes a call for the development of open spaces in “the leafy suburbs”, the scrapping of rent arrears for those occupying council properties, as well as a demand for the City to transfer ownership of its rental units to the tenants. Organiser Mario Wanza says the occupation of the Rondebosch Common is symbolic of all spaces in affluent areas which are underutilized while “people on the Cape Flats don’t have space to move. “The coming together of civil society organisations reminds us of the days of united democratic action in taking forward the struggle. We have once again reached the point of building a united front, this time to rid ourselves of the divide between rich and poor. The common is a stark reminder of this barrier dividing us. “It is a public open space which is hardly ever used by the rich to walk their dogs. This is happening while the poor are living on top of each other only a few suburbs away. Those with money have the luxury of acres of land at their disposal and it’s about time this spatial inequality is properly challenged,” he says. “Cape Town is still as divided as it was during the apartheid era”, Wanza continues. “The poor live a different life compared to the those in privileged areas. These areas have hectares of manicured lawns, used for golf courses and other luxuries, while there is a desperate need for land to be developed in order to provide housing for people who have been on waiting lists for years. It’s time that these areas are integrated.” But while the organisers are finalising the details before the mass action, the City said that staff will be on site to discourage people from using the area illegally. Richard Bosman, the City’s director for Safety and Security, says a meeting was arranged for Wednesday, so that organisers and the City can sit down and allow the applicants to motivate their application and answer questions. “The group was between 15 and 30 minutes late. The panel assumed that they were not coming and continued with the afternoon’s proceedings. A letter was sent to the organisers on 19 January, indicating that no permission for the march and/or gathering had been granted.” In addition to the summit, a march to the common will also take place on Friday.

Quality is our

The first participants will meet at the lookout hill in Rocklands at 07:00 that morning, and will walk through through Mitchell’s Plain to Manenberg. The group will meet with Heideveld, Bishop Lavis and Valhalla Park participants outside Manenberg police station, and proceed to the corner of Vanguard and Klipfontein Road, where Bonteheuwel and Langa participants will assemble. Muslims will be excused to attend mosque. All participants will assemble at Athlone Stadium at 14:00. That same morning, participants from Stellenbosch, Kraaifontein, Bloekombos, Elsies River and Ruyterwacht will gather at Goodwood station and march past the Epping market along Jan Smuts Drive to Athlone Stadium. The group will then march to the Common, and are expected to arrive at 17:00.

Bosman says that despite an application being made for the march, the City has informed the organisers that approval has not been granted. No safety plans has been lodged with the police. Wanza adds that Mayor Patricia De Lille’s “disinterest” in attending the summit shows that “not even she is interested in finding solutions to the plight of the poor.” But De Lille responds that she had already committed to another engagement long before the organisers sent the invitation. The Mayor’s Office advised the organisers that their request could not be considered until formal approval for the gathering had been granted in terms of the relevant legislation. It was further pointed out that the threat to occupy state and privately owned land is fundamentally illegal and therefore could not be supported by the Mayor in any way.

Three arrested in drug raids TAMMY PETERSEN

A MASSIVE haul of drugs was confiscated last week when Philippi police pounced on two Hanover Park homes after tip-offs from hawkeyed locals. On Thursday night, seven officers reacted to information received about drug related activity at a maisonette in Rywood Road, said Warrant Officer Ettienne Conradie, spokesperson for Philippi police. “The members entered a shack under a set of stairs, where they discovered two men in the process of packaging various types of drugs,” he says. A total of 219 heroin packets, 60 tik units, 220 Mandrax tablets, 69g of crushed Mandrax, 36g of raw tik, 4g of cocaine and 14g of heroin

was confiscated. Two scales and 10 9mm rounds of ammunition were also found at the scene. Two people, aged 21 and 28, were arrested for drug and ammunition possession. On Wednesday, in a successful operation, the local Crime Prevention Unit and and Flying Squad conducted a search in Turflyn Walk. Officers searched the house and found 59 units of heroin, 13 packets of crack/cocaine and 21 grams of tik. A 36-year-old man from Crawford was arrested for drug possession and appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Conradie praised residents for their help in the fight against drugs, and encouraged anyone with information on criminal activity to phone the station on (021) 690 1500.

Salesman and customer robbed TAMMY PETERSEN

A WETTON car dealer and a potential customer were robbed at gunpoint on the corner of Crete and Plantation Road on Friday. “At about 11:50, the customer and salesman returned from drawing R20 000 at a bank in Kenilworth Centre, when they were approached by four men”, Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, the spokesperson for Lansdowne police, says. The four robbers pointed guns at the duo

and demanded the money. “The cash was with the salesman. He handed the money to the men, who got into a white Mazda 323 and fled the scene with the complainants’ car keys,” Mnyaka says. The victims were unable to confirm in which direction the getaway car drove and do not recall the vehicle’s registration number. No shots were fired. A case of armed robbery is being investigated, and anyone with information is asked to phone the station on (021) 700-9000.

Once East saw the light, he started a company called Fattrap, two and a half years ago, making Atlantic Seaboard restaurants aware of how to properly dispose of oil. His company, Organic cleaning, is importing disposable Fattrap cloths that soak up oil. That way it will not end up in the oceans.

Down drains, the beach, the ocean, Table Mountain, and just about everywhere else, according to David East, whose company, Organic cleaning, is importing disposable Fattrap cloths made from organic coconut pith, which soaks up oil and turns it into a solid for safe disposal. “Landfills are getting smaller, the seas are getting polluted and the City Council has to clear expensive sewage blockages. Nobody

thinks about these things and where they end up; polluting our environment.” East has been in the restaurant industry for 20 years, and admits to being “blind” regarding the proper disposal of oil and the consequences of it. “Once I found out about the harmful effects on the environment and where it goes, I had to make a difference. People throw oil down the drain – which ends up in the sewage pipes and finds its way back to the beaches and ocean. The same goes for cigarette butts on beaches.” Late last year, the City issued a press release stating that blocked pipes, due to grease, fats and oils, cost the city R60 million to clear and urged residents to properly dis-

Now, five years later, we’re back to change your energy savers that have reached the end of their life. Continue to use energy savers to collectively save South Africa’s energy. Energy saving lightbulbs have an environmental benefit because they cut your lighting cost by using less electricity and last up to eight times longer, resulting in a reduction in greenhouse gases. The small amount of mercury that energy saving lightbulbs contain is almost used up by the time the lightbulb is ready for disposal. So try not to break the lamp and dispose of CFLs at participating retailers.

But his environmental passion does not stop there. As an avid beach goer at Clifton, East realised how cigarette butts litters the beaches, barely below the surface. It takes East and a few friends less than 15 minutes to fill a two litre bottle with butts. “Cape Town wants to establish itself as a green city, and Capetonians are obsessed with the environment but smokers seem to think that cigarette butts are not harmful to the environment.” East is in the process of trying to get a pilot project off the ground on Clifton by handing out plastic tubes on the beaches, in which to put cigarette butts, and hopes to have central collection points at the entrances to beaches, where the re-usable tubes will be emptied and the butts collected for recycling. Ward councillor for the Atlantic Sea Board, Beverley Schaffer, welcomes the project, and says talks should soon start to have the project up and running for next seasons’ busy beach periods. But smokers and those with an affinity for fried foods need not wait till the the pilot projects are rolled out to make a difference by simply putting butts in a can on the beach and soaking up oil with Fattrap cloths. To find out more about Fattraps, or to purchase a pack, visit the Organic Cleaning website to view their range of products at www.organiccleaning.co.za, or contact David East on (021)439 4087, 082 852 7465 or david@fattraps.co.za

Everyone looking to renew their spent CFLs for free

raise your hands!

Old CFLs can be exchanged for new ones in two ways: a. There will be a door-to-door exchange (people will come to your door to do the exchange). b. Self exchange points will be set up in certain areas, where you will be able to go and do the exchange.

BUTTIN: A simple solution to pollution.

Don’t miss out! Save energy and save money!

The exchange period will run from November 2011 to January 2012. www.eskom.co.za/idm

stakeholders such as Cape Town Partnership and the design community who played an important role in securing the award, as well as other private sector partners. Said De Lille: “Bid Committee members have been invited to form the core of the multi-sectoral task team. With their support, we want to make sure the most efficient and optimum management structure is put in place, to ensure proper oversight of how ratepayers’ money is spent on this prestigious event. “I want to pay tribute to the months of hard work and selfless effort put in by Andrew Boraine, Bulelwa Makalima-Ngewana and the team at Cape Town Partnership and the Bid Committee. They helped us win the right to host this event, and I look forward to having them on board, as part of the multi-sectoral task team.

“As a team we have much hard work ahead of us in hosting such a prestigious event,” she said. Resident Sfiso Enock is also excited, especially about the economic implications of such a designation. “This title will mean that Cape Town and South Africa will be firmly entrenched as an international travel destination. “And it will open up a lot of doors for all of our talented designers.” Tomorrow, City representatives will meet with the Bid Committee to discuss the key managerial steps to be put in place. An inclusive stakeholder forum will be held in late February to coincide with the Design Indaba. This will be an opportunity for design industry roleplayers and other interested stakeholders to contribute ideas to make the World Design Capital 2014 a success.

Your SMSes Vagrancy problem in Lansdowne . In response to the story “Home behind the reeds”: Where should the homeless people go? They are not in anyone’s way. It’s Kenwyn’s drug addicts who are breaking in and stealing. These people are also human and we should help and not punish them. . I’m a Lansdowne resident who lives very close to the bridge. This area has been an ongoing problem for years and it’s only getting worse. We are being attacked by flies, rats and fieldmice. We cannot leave our windows and doors open due to the homeless people occupying the field in front of the complexes. We are in full view of various activities (drinking, fighting, swearing, defecating, bad language, filth and drug dealing). It’s not a nice sight to have in your neighbourhood. We are all ratepayers and I can’t see what anyone is doing about it. Clear today and tomorrow they back. I wish I was living in an area like Upper Wynberg, Claremont or Constantia where this

Just a thought Can anybody help me? Isn’t there a policy which states that every child must be in school? If so, why isn’t it happening in Hanover Park? I find children as young as eight sitting on corners or hanging out at the terminus during school hours. To crown it all, the police just drive past them like this is the way it’s supposed to be. I’m concerned about our children. Parent, Hanover Park will not be tolerated. Why is it okay for some areas to have this problem while others are a no-go? We are all ratepayers. Concerned resident . Residents have to give responsibly to registered shelters and organisations which work with the homeless, and not to people begging at doors and traffic lights. Vagrants get used to easy pickings and don’t want to seek jobs. They will just move closer to the the hands (or areas) that feed them! . I don’t think the City Council or ward councillors are doing enough to solve the vagrancy and squatting problem in the areas. There must be a solution! . We have all sorts of beggars visiting us daily. I’m sure they are doing the same to many others. Most of the time, believe it or not, they ask for money and not something to eat. I know what the Bible says about feeding the hungry, but know nothing of giving them cash whenever they want. Residents must use their own informed conscience and wisdom when faced with beggars. Lewis, Lansdowne

In response . Peter Hendricks, seeing you in front of your 2012 class is so great. You are an inspiration to all and may your career go from strength to strength! Penny, Plumstead . The “Only One God” syndrome has hit Mr Abrahams. There’s no God. You create your own God and then what you created, you believe. It’s like a mind-set game. There’s nothing to fear but old wives’ tales. By the way . So you think corruption is rife in the country? Just wait for the Secrecy Bill to become law. You ANC nothing yet! Jeffrey Solomon . My niece’s phone went missing on the 06:10 train from Retreat to Heathfield. It’s a metallic blue Nokia C3. A reward is offered. Please call (021) 701 4092 or 078 364 3324.

Thank you, SAPS, for a job well done WE wish to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for a job well done and for the excellent manner in which Detective Van Noie of Manenberg police station handled our case, which he was not assigned to. We commend him for going the ex-

tra mile and believe that if the entire police force were as dedicated and passionate about their work we would be living in a crime-free country. Also, a special thanks to Joy for her help and input. We really appreciate it.

Detective Van Noie deserves recognition and a medal for his outstanding work. A very special thank you from the bottom of our hearts. He is truly one in a million. MR AND MRS LODEWYK Primrose Park

There’s only one God MY CHURCH is better than yours! My religion is better than yours! That is the perception that I do get when the topic of religion comes up. Even if you go to each and every church on earth to see which religion suits you, there remains only one God. Therefore, we as humans

should respect each other’s religions and not be scared to go into any church. We also need to fear God, only then can we become morally and spiritually better people. Peace and good luck for the coming new year. PATRICK ABRAHAMS Lansdowne

Stormers run riot in Wellington LIAM MOSES

THE Western Cape has long been considered to be one of the most prolific producers of talented rugby players in South Africa, and one of the most prolific in the world. And this belief was proven again on Saturday, when a youthful Stormers team brushed aside the Boland Kavaliers in their first warm-up game of the 2012 Super Rugby season. The Stormers went into the match without the services of experienced players such Andries Bekker, Schalk Burger, Bryan Habana, Duane Vermeulen, Gio Aplon or any of the regulars who lead the team to victory in the South African conference of the 2011 Super Rugby campaign. However, despite the absence of so many first choice players, Alister Coetzee’s charges still managed to run in seven tries and win the match 45-17. The Stormers pack dominated the collision point from virtually the first minute, and it wasn’t long before they were to profit from their superior fervour for physicality. Young tight-head prop Frans Malherbe was the first to set the score-keepers to task when he barged over the try line in the fifth minute. Bolla Conradie, a player at the opposite end of the age and experience spectrum, was next to cross the whitewash for the Stormers, when he sliced through the Boland defence 10 minutes later. Conradie played with a hunger equal to any of his young team mates, and two minutes later he pierced Boland’s defence again, and grubbered through for Danie Poolman to chase. The wing was tackled without the ball in the in-goal area by a back-tracking Kavaliers defender, resulting in a penalty try for the Stormers.

Poolman visited Boland’s in-goal area again 20 minutes later, and this time the Kavaliers were unable to stop him from dotting down for the last try of the first half. The Stormers resumed their superiority in the early exchanges of the second-half, but some typical early-season errors and enterprising play from Boland lead to Tries from Jonathan Francke and Junior Bester in the 41st and 45th minutes respectively. Coetzee’s team were not to be outdone and hit back with scores from Namibian international flank Rohan Kitshof and No 8 Nizaam Carr in the 55th and 68th minutes respectively, and closed out the game with a try from stalwart hooker Tiaan Liebenberg, a second-half replacement, in the 80th minute. The comprehensive victory will help to allay fears that the team could be short on depth in key positions for this coming season. Conradie, who last played for the Stormers in 2010, proved a steadying hand at scrumhalf and will be an adequate replacement for first-choice scrumhalf Dewalt Duvenhage in case of an enforced lay-off. New signings Burton Francis, JP du Plessis and Gerhard van den Heever also performed well and could feature regularly this season. Francis, a former Blue Bulls player who was signed from the Lions, provides much needed cover at fly-half, a position where the Stormers have been short-staffed and injury-hit, while Du Plessis, who returned to South Africa after a spell in Australia playing both Rugby Union and Rugby League, will lessen the impact made by the departures of centres Johann Sadie (Blue Bulls) and Jacque Fourie (Japan), and Van den Heever, signed from the Blue Bulls, provides Coetzee with an excellent option at fullback or on either wing. The side’s other two off-season signings, Joe Pietersen and Deon Carstens, who both returned to South Africa after plying their

FUTURE STAR: Steven Kitshoff listens to advice from Stormers hooker Tiaan Liebenberg. Kitshoff is one of the many talented youngsters in the Stormers squad who could come to the fore this season. Photo: Nasief Manie trade abroad, did not take part in the game. The speedy development of youngsters at the union has also swelled the Stormers’ forward ranks. Props Frans Malherbe and Steven Kitshoff could see significant game time this season, while the team’s established lock partnership of Rynhard Elstadt and Andries Bekker will have to fight to stave off the challenge of Quinn Roux and Eben Etzebeth, and the presence Nizaam Carr, Yaya Hartzenberg, Siya Kolisi, Nic Koster, Nick Fenton-Wells and Rueben Johannes will ease the Stormers passage into life without

Springbok flank Francois Louw, who left for English club Bath at the end of last season. Coetzee will know that, despite winning the Currie Cup First Division in 2011, Boland are a world away from the quality they will face every week in Super Rugby. The Stormers will face stiffer opposition this week, when they clash with 2011 Currie Cup champions the Lions at Newlands on Friday.

SA ballroom champ off to Italy LIAM MOSES

A HEATHFIELD woman will fulfil the dream of a lifetime next month when she travels to Italy to train for and compete in major international ballroom events. Stephanie van der Poll, 21, has been competing in ballroom dancing events since she was 11 and last year she reached the apex of local competition circuit when she claimed both the Western Province and South African championships. Van der Poll says her reason for moving to Italy, on Wednesday 1 February, is to improve the standard of her own dancing, as well as the standard of dancing in South Africa. “I’m going to be living and training in Italy because the coaches are amazing compared to those in South Africa. The quality of dancing in Italy is amazing,” she said. “South African ballroom dancing isn’t considered to be very good because of how lazy our dancers can be. We want to change this international view of South Africa dancing and improve the standard and quality. We want to come back and be able to help young dancers.” During her time in Europe, Van der Poll and her Italian partner will compete in tournaments in Italy, Russia, Spain, Germany and other countries across the continent. Besides her provincial and national victories last year, Van der Poll also has several other major achievements to her name. In 2009, the University of the Western Cape dietetics student claimed third place in the national championships and in 2010 she went one better and claimed second. However, she has not always had it her own way. She was prevented from competing in the World Championships last year after her partner chose to give up dancing and focus on his studies. She only found her current partner, Italian Ezio Mattioli, in June last year, and they went into National Championships with only 20 days of practice under their belts. Thus far, Van der Poll’s expenses have been covered by her parents and her partner’s parents, but she is in desperate need

Van der Poll says finding sponsorship will be beneficial to her career, other South African dancers and the sponsor as well. “I feel that we deserve sponsorship because we are willing to put in so much time. I’m putting my studies on hold because I know we have an opportunity to improve the status of South African dancers oversees,” said Van der Poll. “Dancing is very big in Europe. They have channels dedicated completely to dancing. Whatever sponsor we get, we will be putting their name out in the interviews. Any publicity we get they will get.” Anyone interested in helping Van der Poll can contact her at stephanie.vdpoll@gmail.com.

BERNARD and Roberta Johnson, a ballroom dance couple from Lotus River were amongst several sports stalwarts honoured as “legends” by the Western Cape sports community and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. The couple started dancing in 1970, and they successfully continued competing as professionals until their retirement from competitive dancing in 1988. They then turned to coaching and have since produced numerous national junior, youth and adult ballroom champions. Bernard is the current president of the sport’s controlling body, Federation of Dance Sport South Africa (FEDANSA), and was also the national coach in 2001. Roberta has developed nine couples who represented South Africa at the World Championship since 1991. The Johnsons were one of 33 legends honoured during the ceremony but were unable to attend as they were at the national student championship in Bloemfontein. This was the seventh edition of the awards function, which took place just before Christmas at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. These awards honoured pioneers of different sporting codes who have contributed to the transformation and development of their particular sport. The recipients were recognised for their

contribution, not only on a national level but specifically to the Western Cape. This year legends in rugby, canoeing, dance sport, badminton, sailing and netball, were honoured. Ivan Meyer, MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape, was the keynote speaker at the event, and lauded the recipients for their contribution in upholding true sportsmanship. “A legend is not a hero. A hero is someone who will be remembered for now but a legend is someone who will be remembered forever. Today I am honoured and proud to be amongst you because you are true legends,” said Meyer. “We lived through painful times when the colour of your skin prevented you from stepping out onto the sports field, no matter how much talent you were blessed with. “We lived through a time where our own brothers and sisters left South Africa to go and play for other countries, which welcomed them and saw only a great sporting star. They didn’t see in black and white. Thankfully that time has passed. For this I am honoured to be in your presence. “Through your refusal to be put down by a racist political system, through your commitment to uplift your community and train your neighbours and their children, through your fighting and sporting spirit, we now live in a true democracy. A democracy that is colour-blind.”

New rugby team for Retreat LIAM MOSES

A NEW rugby club is to be formed in Retreat and will be based at the Basil D’Oliveira Sports Complex in Heathfield. The club is the brain-child of Jan Burger, councillor of Ward 72, and Henry Moses, a community leader and member of the Retreat neighbourhood watch. According to Moses, the reason for forming the club is to help keep young people away from crime, drugs and violence. “I would like things to get better for the youth. We must do something to keep them busy,” said Moses. “There are a lot of youngsters doing nothing. We want to keep them on the right path by having workshops with them.” Moses, Burger, and former Springbok, Western Province and Stormers prop-forward Eddie Andrews, who is currently a ward councillor in Mitchell’s Plain, met with members of the community for the first time on Thursday 19 January to inform them about starting the club. Burger has been trying to get youth from the area playing rugby since 2007, when he first became councillor, and the meeting was the first tentative step towards establishing the club.

Moses and Burger named the side the JB Page Rugby Club, after Joseph Benjamin Page, former president of the Retreat and City and Suburban Rugby Clubs. According to Moses, Page had a massive impact on the lives of several young men in the Retreat area. “He was our Mr Rugby. He was the president of City and Suburban Rugby Union for about 21 years. He was the guy who kept Retreat Rugby Club together,” said Moses. “If we didn’t have him, what would have happened to us? My brother, myself, my friends? We could have turned out doing the wrong things. He kept us busy with rugby.” Moses added that before he and Burger settled on the name, he approached Page’s daughter to ask for permission. “Over the years no one has honoured his name. So I feel we must honour him. We must honour him for what he did for the community.” Moses himself has already had a similar influence on the lives of young people in the Southern Peninsula, one of whom has gone on to play at the highest level of rugby possible. Eddie Andrews started playing rugby at the Mitchell’s Plain Rugby Club, a team Moses helped to found. Andrews said that playing rugby helped him to change his mindset

and outlook on life, and that there were many benefits to playing the sport. “The benefit is that you are part of a different environment where you now have to contribute to a common goal,” said Andrew. “You have to think differently. There also won’t be time for considering taking part in the social ills in your community. You are exposed to social skills and most importantly you have a support structure.” “You realise that to achieve, you have to work harder. The bar has been raised.” Andrews added that he intends to stay involved with the club and will assist with coaching. The group will host a second meeting with residents on Thursday 23 February, at the Retreat Community Centre in Toring Road, and calls on anyone interested to attend. Contact Jan Burger on 083 415 3017 or Henry Moses on 082 461 0101 for further information.
