WINNING FORM: Profes sional Red Bull athlete Jean Marc Johannes (21) sur prised the Grade 7B learn ers at Battswood Primary School yesterday (Monday 21 May). Johannes is the newlycrowned champion of the My Culture Resurrec tion Jam, held in Johannes burg. He beat 30 other pro fessional skaters. In a sur prise stopover he visited the school to give a motiva tional talk to pupils on the brink of their high school ca reers. Johannes also sur prised his cousin, Almondre Whiteman, who celebrated her 13th birthday on the day of the champ’s return. Be sides his top skating skills, Johannes also started his own band and launched a CD. “The children should re main focused, follow their dreams and not do drugs or get involved with gangs. Oom explains how vital this development is, as it serves the domestic worker segment of the market. “The department will do all it can to ensure the development proceeds smoothly, ensuring the accelerated delivery of houses to the people who need them most.” The subsidised development will consist of 219 units for people earning less than R3 500 a month. R25 MILLION housing development in Eagle Park has been earmarked for domestic workers. It was initiated by members of a women’s savings group who approached the ministry of human settlements for land. The application was lodged in January last year. An environmental assessment has already been passed, but a water licence from Water Affairs and Forestry ministry is still required. Bruce Oom, spokesperson for provincial human settlements minister Bonginkosi Madikizela, says this key legislative require-

the streets”. The courtyards would consist of hard and soft surfaces with provision for parking, to further the “sense of community”. Two housing types would be provided. Single-storey dwellings will be placed along a shared boundary, while double-storey units will be built along the main routes and public open spaces for optimal surveillance. Single-storey units will be 42 square metres, without the option of extension. Doublestorey units will be 40 square metres with the option to extend. The development will border Pelican Park, Grassy Park, Lotus River, Schaapkraal and Phumlani Village. A public participation process has already been conducted where concerns were raised
by the community. These include the proposed erf sizes in relation to surrounding properties; support for the development given the desperate need for housing; possible degradation in the event of homes being expanded informally with shack-type construction; impact on existing civic services; and inappropriate architectural designs that would not blend into the existing surrounds.
