SUPPORT: SAFE PLACE TO ASSIST VICTIMS

New trauma facility for Ocean View MONIQUE DUVAL @monique_duval

T

he Ocean View Police Station buzzed with excitement as officers and volunteers lined up to get a glimpse of the new Victim Support Room last week. The new room consists of an office, a children’s play area, a counselling room and ablution facilities. The room was installed by Business Against Crime (BAC). After years of dealing with mouldy floors and a broken roof, the volunteers are relieved they now have a safe place to assist victims of crime. Speaking at the launch former Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Johann Kikillus said the launch marked a special day in the lives of volunteers. He said despite working in a “crummy little room”, the volunteers managed to keep smiling and work hard to help victims deal with trauma. “Over the past three years, they have not

asked for anything. Despite difficulties, they continue to help those who need it, with a smile on their face,” he said. René Francklin, coordinator of the Ocean View Victim Support Room, said she and her team were very excited. “It’s something we have been dreaming about; it’s a big day for us,” she said. Francklin added the group has grown to 14 volunteers. They want the community to know they are here to help, she said. “Many of the volunteers are ordinary people who want to help their communities. The room provides the perfect platform for us to be available and involved,” she said. Acting provincial police commissioner Brigadier Norman Modishana said police resources were often spent on fighting and preventing crime. He said tackling crime and the after effects was a combined responsibility. “I am glad to see this is the case Ocean View Police Station,” he said. V To report crime or for more information, phone Ocean View Police Station on (021) 783 8317.
