FTER suffering an early defeat in the first of their two warm-up matches on Saturday, the national women’s softball team came back with a punch when they faced opponents Glenthorn A’s and Westridge Yankees at City Park in Athlone. The team lost 6-4 against the Athlone side but beat the reigning league champs, the Yankees, by 8 to 4. “I think we did quite well offensively and defensively,” national coach Lester Smith commented. “The Yankees were not much on base and we managed to get them out quickly.” He adds: “We did our experiments and we know what we should do to be more competitive”. Prepare for pedal power WITH less than four weeks to go, entries are streaming in for Die Burger’s Cycle Tour 2011. The 92 kilometre route – the last seeding opportunity for the 2012 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour – is already over 75 per cent full. “Entries are filling up and cyclists shouldn’t wait until the last minute to enter,” says David Bellairs, the CEO of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. “The shorter 44km route is a beautiful ride and ideal for novice cyclists to use as a training ride.”

The organisers recently launched a novice programme aimed at cyclists who are new to the sport and keen to cycle in a race, but don’t know where to start. This novice programme will provide cyclists with encouragement and help – from skills training to facilitated outrides – ensuring they are ready to participate and enjoy the tour. Participants need only a bicycle and a helmet. They may have no race results prior to September 2011. For more information,

email marketing@cycletour.co.za. Die Burger Cycle Tour takes place on Sunday 4 December and is the Western Cape’s second biggest road cycling event. Entries are limited to 4 500 for the 92km route and 1 500 for the 44km route. Visit www.dieburgercycletour.co.za and follow the easy instructions to enter online. Entries close on Friday 18 November, or as soon as the entry limit have been reached.
