Music and lights! Capetonians are expected to come out in their num bers to watch the Cape Town sky light up on Sun day. The annual Christmas lights switchon will fea ture the city’s best musi cians and, together with a starstudded lineup, the festive event promises to be a visual and entertain ment extravaganza. Clockwise, from bottom left, are Peter Cohen, of Freshlyground, veteran Cape Town entertainer Za yn Adam, Kyla Rose Smith, also of Freshlyground, mayor Patricia de Lille, Jimmy Dludlu and the eM zantsi Bloco Band. Fish market finally ready NURENE JASSIEMMARCUS

AFTER years of trials and tribulations, fishmongers in the Athlone area will finally have a proper workspace as the City of Cape Town hands over the upgraded Athlone Fish Market later this week. The handover is scheduled to take place on Friday – more than five years after plans for an elaborate fish market off Klipfontein Road were initially unveiled. The new market will have 10 trading bays, each equipped with a concrete floor, washdown drainage feeding into the sewer system, water access points, dedicated lighting and customer parking. In February, the City confirmed it had allocated R1,3m for the upgrade of the fish market

and anticipated the project would be completed by June, but this was not to be as various departments within the City locked horns over issues such as waste management and ablution facilities. Hashiem da Costa, from the City’s Department of Economic and Human Development, earlier said that the City’s cleansing department would wash the fish market daily and that bins – in which traders will discard their offal – will be cleaned twice daily. At the time various City officials raised concerns over the fact that no toilet facilities had been made available for the traders despite the fact that this had been budgeted for. The City has since agreed to temporarily install portable toilets at the fish market and to make provision for permanent toilets in the new financial year.

Abdullah McCloud, the retired chairperson of the Athlone Fish Hawkers Association, says he feels the final market traders will receive is somewhat of a pittance. “There isn’t even a roof over the trading areas. But at the end of the day I suppose we should be grateful because it’s much better than the space we worked from before,” McCloud says. He thanked the previous ward councillor, Mustapha Murudker, and the current councillor, Magedien Davids, for their role in ensuring the market became a reality. “For so many years we traded on a wing and a prayer and now we will have formal leases and pay for our spots, so I hope this will result in a prosperous future for everyone,” he adds. ly-featured fish market was promised to local fishmongers in the 1980s. However, last year it was discovered that the land earmarked for the fish market was zoned as a road reserve, which meant it could not be built on (“Councillors fume over fish market delays”, People’s Post, 31 January 2011). In 2010, councillors agreed to channel R20 000 over the next three years towards the running costs of the Athlone Fish Market (“Councillors tip scales for long-awaited market”, People’s Post, 27 September 2010). The budget for the project was previously slashed from R5m to R1,6m (“No sign of Athlone’s fish market”, 14 July 2009). The significant changes in the low-cost option relate to the number of stalls which were cut from 16 to 10.

New sewage line planned NURENE JASSIEMMARCUS

BLOCKED drains, overflowing sewers and the stench of faeces may soon be a thing of the past as the City of Cape Town plans to upgrade the city’s sewerage system –for the first time in more than 50 years. The tender for the project, which will cost an estimated R160m, has been awarded to Aecom Consulting Engineers –16 years after research on the proposed upgrade began. Henk Aartsma, Aecom’s Principal Technical Manager, says there is an urgent need to refurbish and upgrade the City’s existing sewer system, but that this could not be done until an additional catchment was built where sewage can be drained to. He lists dire consequences for Capetonians if the upgrade is delayed including sewers overflowing into roads and rivers and an increased odour problem in areas such as Hazel Road in Gatesville. Although the project is still in its logistical planning phase, it is projected that construction will start in August next year and should be completed by June 2015. Various route options for the laying of underground sewerage pipes have been identified, most of which start near the existing Bridgetown sewerage pumping station and end in Philippi. Some of the roads earmarked for possible underground channelling of sewage pipes include Hanover Park Avenue, Pook Road in

Rylands, Turfhall Road in the vicinity of Doornhoogte and Hazel roads in Gatesville. Aartsma emphasises that a final route has not been decided on, and that the affected communities’ input will be taken into consideration when decisions are made. “It is almost impossible to do this project without affecting the community and we need to work together to minimise the impact it will have on them,” says Aartsma. He adds that hi-tech trenchless excavation options are being explored, but the feasibility thereof will need to be evaluated before proceeding. “Costs will double if we only use trenchless excavation for this project. I think it is important that we pitch it to the community that you only do this type of construction once in a lifetime,” Aartsma says. The materials that will be used in the new sewerage system are designed to last 50 years, but when one considers that the existing pipelines are much older than that it could last even longer, he says. More than 500 000 residents are set to benefit from the project and Aartsma undertook to use local labour –sourced from the affect subcouncils’ databases – where possible. The City’s Mayoral Committee member for Utility Services, Shehaam Sims, thanked Aecom for the lengths they went to in ensuring the proposed routes would least affect residents. “This project will alleviate years of problems,” she says. Existing sewer systems will remain operational while the new system is constructed.

Informal traders hit the web SMALL business traders are taking to the City of Cape Town’s online permit system.

The City’s one-stop-shop online permit system – or e-permitting – for informal traders has made it easier for traders to identify and apply for trading space in the city. The online permit system has grown considerably with 1 500 existing permitted informal traders being transferred onto the e-permitting system over the past year.

“Following the City’s informal trading plan processes, a total of 3 977 dedicated and permitted informal trading site opportunities have been made available to informal traders by the City,” a council official says. All existing City-permitted informal traders are being transferred onto the database on an area-by-area basis and should be completed early in 2013. Once finalised, future traders wanting to apply for available trading space anywhere in Cape Town can go to a

It is important that Cape Town is a place where informal trading can thrive and this e-permitting system is definitely a step in the right direction.”

This single application system ensures that the allocation of spaces to traders is fair and efficient, the official says. “Available trading sites are easily identified. Traders who are already operating in a space cannot apply for another one somewhere else in the city and those traders who have transgressed bylaws or are in arrears with their rental payments can be easily iden-

Say ‘no’ to bullies WHETHER it’s a shove or nasty comment, bullying has a disastrous impact. In a recent incident in Johannesburg, a pupil shot and killed a classmate who had apparently been tormenting him – and others – for years. But is enough being done to protect those on the receiving end of the abuse? People’s Post interns Luzuko Zini and Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn polled readers for their views.

NO SUPPORT: Gilbert Mapfumo says bullying is bad and thinks all people deserve to be treat ed equally. “If you are taught from an early age to respect others and lead by example, bully ing shouldn’t be a problem.”

CLOSE WA WATCH: TCH: Phakama Ncapayi believes pu pils need to be watched during school hours. “The police and school governing body mem bers must be visible at schools so they can identify the bullies.”

INTERVENE: Allen Rinquest believes parents INTERVENE: should get involved should they suspect their children are being victimised. “Parents must stand up for their children and go to talk to the principals on how to stop bullying in schools.”

TALK IT OUT: Ferdinand Nell believes bullying is part of growing up. “It takes talking to a bully to fully understand why they are doing that. I think it is more of a selfesteem thing; bullies do it for popularity or to boost their selfes teem. Bullying is a natural part of being a child.”

WALK AWAY: AWAY: Deborah van Rensburg feels if you are being bullied, you should be the better person and not fight back. “Rather walk away. Sometimes it is difficult because teachers also victimise children. If a child does something wrong once, don’t blame him when something happens.”

EDUCATE: Peter Mabutsana says parents need EDUCATE: to teach their children how to handle bullying and how to treat other people and children. “If you are taught the right values and how to han dle peer pressure by your parents from a young age, it will help you. You will then have the right attitude and will know how to handle it.”

Hard-core bikers show their soft side

LAILA MAJIET

BIKERS from across Cape Town have done their bit to add a little cheer to an underprivileged child’s Christmas. An annual motorcycling event saw thousands of bikers riding through the city, passing through Manenberg where they made a stop at the Saartjie Baartman Centre. They were armed with fluffy stuffed animals clinging to their sides. The Cape Town Charity Toy Run was initially started in 1982 and has grown significantly ever since. Thousands of toys have been collected for underprivileged children at this year’s gathering. Burly bikers got together on Sunday for the annual charity toy run. Families lined the M5 to watch the huge procession. As a result of the event, thousands of children in more than 300 orphanages, homes, shelters, hospitals and charity organisations around the country will have a brighter Christmas, thanks to the toys collected.

HIGHWAY: Bikers seen on the M5 on their way to drop off the toys.

FUN: Julie Krutsen takes an excited child for a quick spin.

VROOM: From left, Julie Krutsen, Sharon and Megan Malan, Chrissi Smith and Morag Mcallister from Harley Davidson Club Cape Town.

‘I stopped hitting my wife’ TAMMY PETERSEN

HURT OR HEAL? The choice is in your hands.

THE hands clutching a cigarette could be those of a businessman, an office worker or teacher. The fingernails are neat and the skin is smooth, but Dirk admits his hands have caused his wife unspeakable pain and almost led to the destruction of their marriage. “I was a wife-beater,” he says simply. “My wife was my punching bag for years. But I am proof that people can change.” The age-old debate of whether an abuser can turn over a new leaf is one which will lead to heated arguments for years to come. Synnov Skorge has been working with battered and traumatised women for over two decades. She is the director of the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Abused Women and Children. In the 20 years she has been advocating for victims of violence, the amount of men reported to have changed their behaviour has been “minimal”. “There have been very few success stories. Most of the time it’s because the perpetrator lacks the willingness to turn over a new leaf, or because of society’s perception that a strong man is a violent man.” But Sydney Damonse, a religious leader who works with men’s groups across the city, believes the cycle of abuse continues because too much is being done to help victims while abusers are only seen as the “scum who prey on the weak”. “For every woman that is abused, there is a man shackled by his ways, crying out for help. The woman is given support and helped to rebuild her life. The man? He is chucked in jail.” The pastor says he has seen “hundreds” of men become loving, peaceful fathers and husbands after tormenting their families. “All it takes is group counselling and prayer. The man is a victim of a vicious cycle and while he doesn’t carry the scars of physical violence, he has deep-rooted emotional struggles prosecution won’t solve.” As a child, Dirk says he watched his mother cry herself to sleep at night after being assaulted by this stepfather. He regularly shielded her from the blows which rained down on her and was with her when she was admitted to hospital after a severe beating left her with broken ribs. “I always told myself I would never be like that man,” he says emphatically. “I will never forget the first time I hit my wife. She had gone to a church meeting and came home later than I thought she would. I was drunk and I was convinced she was seeing another man. I don’t know what got into me.”

That night, he beat Maria until she stopped fighting back. “I was so angry I gave her one last kick and left her lying in the kitchen. The next day when I got up, she was making breakfast. We never spoke about it and made like it never happened.” For 20 years he tormented her. Sometimes it would be a push, other times she would be left with broken bones. “It was like I couldn’t help myself. I don’t know where all the anger came from; sometimes it was about supper, other times about the way she acts. I could see what it was doing to my family, but I felt like I wasn’t in control.” Family members used to plead with him to stop the abuse as they feared he would eventually kill her. But, he says, he always thought she was the problem and, should she change her ways, he wouldn’t “have a reason” to lift his hands. “One weekend, she hid my alcohol. I punched her and slapped her into the street. Her sister and a neighbour tried to step in, but I couldn’t stop. Eventually one of them threw boiling water at me. “Other neighbours came out of their houses and attacked me. That day I felt what it was like to be humiliated.” He never beat her again. “It has been eight years since that day,” he says. “I won’t say I suddenly realised the error of my ways; it was more a realisation that I was capable of killing the woman I was supposed to love. My children were also traumatised – I saw I was turning into my stepfather.” He has joined a prayer group at his local church, but is quick to point out he is “not a Bible-basher”. “Sometimes I still get the urge to beat her,” Dirk admits. “She knows how to push my buttons, but I love her. It takes

a lot from me to rather shove my hands into my pockets. But it helps to talk about it to other men who understand what I am going through.” Maria, an introverted woman with an aloof air about her, says she never considered leaving Dirk. “I made a promise in front of the altar to love and look after him,” she says. “Yes, I went through a lot of trying times with him, but those days are over now. He is a different man. He really has changed.” But not all are as lucky as Maria. Sandra’s refrain is short and to the point: “Once a wife-beater, always a wifebeater. I should know; I have been through an abusive marriage.” After a whirlwind romance, she married Jerome in the 1980s – three months after meeting him. The honeymoon phase lasted a week. “We had an argument about a plate and a cup that was in the sink,” Sandra says. “He told me I was lazy and an embarrassment. I was about to launch into a tirade when he punched me in the face.” Stunned that her usually charismatic partner would leave her with a bleeding mouth and a chipped tooth, she spent the rest of that day crying. “The next day, he acted as if nothing happened. He brought me flowers and told me I was the best thing that had ever happened to him. Jerome was his old self again – loving and gentle.” That was until he fetched her from work one day and saw her speaking to her supervisor outside. “I got into the car and he greeted me curtly. Once we were a safe distance away I felt him grab my hair. He told me I was a whore who didn’t deserve the life I had and he literally kicked me out of the car. I walked all the way home,” she says.

The torture continued for three years, during which she was burnt with cigarettes, her hair was torn from her scalp and her ankle was twisted. “I left him after he started laying his hands on our children,” Sandra recalls angrily. “He promised high and low to change. He started attending my church, went to see a psychologist and even became involved in the men’s group at our local community centre. I believed he had changed and I allowed him back into our lives.” That, she says, was the biggest mistake she ever made. “For about two months we were a happy family; then it started again. After the third beating, I decided I wouldn’t put myself through this again. I didn’t have the strength to take any more.” She filed for divorce a month after moving in with a friend. “I also laid a charge of assault against him, for which he got a suspended sentence. I felt failed by the justice system and by the man I had entrusted my future to. I was alone with two children. I never thought I would be a single mother,” Sandra says. Nearly three years later, she is proud of how far she has come. “I have worked my way up from being a messenger to the secretary of a successful business in Cape Town,” she says. “While raising two small children, I put myself through short courses and passed with flying colours. Because of that, I am able to afford a decent place for my children to grow up in. Making a success of me is the best payback ever.” Skorge says the centre focuses on empowering the victim to allow her to make the right decision in terms of the future. “The reasons women stay in abusive relationships range from economic weakness to cultural or religious views. Most of the time their personal safety and whether they will die at the hands of their assailants isn’t even the most important priority,” she says. The only solution is a harsher crackdown on abusers, Skorge stresses. “There has to be severe repercussions and sentences to men who abuse. Until then, the femicide across the country will continue, and this scourge will continue to erode our society.” While Damonse agrees that harsher sentences should be handed down to perpetrators, he insists that counselling for men should also be given priority. “This cycle will never stop until the root of the problem is addressed. The man goes into jail an abuser, and comes out an abuser. What benefit is there in tossing him in a cell? The men with blood on their hands need help. And until that is given, this issue will be around for centuries to come.”

People’s Post Athlone Page 19 BETTER: The Festive Season Lights switchon will be an extravaganza.

Cape Town Town to light up THE annual official festive season lights switch-on promises to be a grand affair. Billed as Cape Town’s largest free public open-air event, the official switch-on is to move from Adderley Street to the Grand Parade this year in what is to be the occasion's biggest production yet. Mayor Patricia de Lille will officially launch the summer holiday season when she switches on the lights at 20:00 on Sunday. In past years, crowds of over 80 000 have lined Adderley Street to watch the colourful extravaganza of light, costumes and sound. More than 5km of rope lighting was used for the various light creations, including the 6mhigh Christmas tree at the entrance to the Company’s Gardens. Of the 12 light installations, there are two new designs, including the main theme crossing and the Table Mountain crossing. The remaining crossings reflect displays of typical Cape Town festive images. For the first time, motifs have been installed down Darling Street and a new Christmas tree will also be installed on the Grand Parade. A free public concert will kick off at 15:00, featuring a star-studded line-up of performers including Jimmy Dludlu, Freshlyground, Lira and DJ Ready D. Other top Cape Town artists performing on stage include Zayn Adam, Emo Adams, Mynie Grove, Coda, Alistair Izobel and the Freeflight Dancers. The switch-on will be followed by a street parade in the form of a Festival Carnival of Lights with giant costumes and floats. The parade will see 2 000 participants in costume dancing to music provided by brass bands, Christmas Bands and army bands. Red Zebra will perform, along with dancers, giant puppets, stilt walkers, carnival characters and giant wheels – concluding with a special Father Christmas celebration. The procession will move from the City Hall, up Darling Street, turning right into Adderley Street and disperse in Lower Heerengracht. Along with the big stage, spectacular performances, pyrotechnics and mass parade, the event will celebrate Cape Town’s icons through audio-visual tributes. Three large LED screens in Adderley Street will enable spectators to follow all the action on stage, with additional screens to track the festive parade. The show will be complemented by a dazzling laser light display. Law enforcement and emergency staff will be on hand to ensure all enjoy a safe outing. The festive lights will stay up until the end of January. On Sunday, the streets leading off Darling Street will be closed from 10:00 until midnight. No parking will be permitted in Darling and Adderley streets from 06:00 until midnight. Special parking has been arranged on Queen Victoria and Wale streets. The City has also installed festive lights and/or Christmas trees in Athlone, Bontehe-

uwel, Crawford, Fish Hoek, Maitland Garden Village, Grassy Park, Hanover Park, Heathfield, Heideveld, Hout Bay, Lavender Hill, Maitland, Manenberg, Mitchells Plain, Philippi, the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, Sea Point and Sybrand Park.

First get the right tools for that job CONSIDER yourself a handyman? Well, you know what they say: a man’s worth is measured by his tools. So you better ensure you have the following tools in your toolbox to qualify as a topnotch handyman: . Claw hammer – one side for hit ting nails in, one side for removing the ones you bent trying to hammer in.

. Measuring tape, because using your hands, feet and arms look silly. . Screwdrivers of various sizes and types. . A builder’s square or spirit level, because your eye just won’t cut it. . A chisel to remove wood and add door hinge. . A Stanley knife, because you don’t need to sharpen its blade. . A handsaw, although you get

the more advanced skill saw, the tra ditional handsaw will do the trick. . A block plane to remove layers of wood. . A crescent wrench, which can adjust the size of the wrench head to the side of the nut. . A pair of pliers. A pair of needle pliers and standard pliers can help to strip wires and reach into those hard to reach places.

With all the bright colours available for your home, you can explore your creative side, while also having fun doing it. And if you are considering doing the job your self, here are some guidelines for you to follow

when painting your interior walls: Clean the room by sweeping and dusting. Al so dust the walls you will be painting. If you are leaving the previous coat on, you can also wipe the wall with a damp cloth. Layer the floor with newspaper or any other sheets. This may guarantee, should you drop some paint, that the floors are not damaged or stained. Place masking tape on the skirting boards and electrical fittings. Inspect the walls for cracks and holes, and fill it with crack filler. Once dry, smooth the patches with sandpaper. Before commencing with your painting, stir the paint well and pour into a paint tray. Start by painting from one corner of the wall, applying the second coat after leaving it to dry for at least three hours. If you’re feeling creative, buy a stencil with shapes, stick it to the wall with masking tape and spraypaint over it with a different colour. Remove all masking tape and stencils once everything has dried. Stand back and be amazed at your hand work.

Decorating dos to get you going

Tiling: tips to heed

JADE LOTRIET

A SLICK of paint or a striking piece of art can work wonders in your home. So, if you’re thinking of making any changes, here’s what you need to consider: Discover your personal style: Your home has to represent you and you have to feel comfortable in it. Unfortunately, the process of decorating can become overwhelming – more so if you’re not exactly sure of what it is that you want to achieve. Spend some time discovering your likes and dislikes before jumping into a particular theme. Look at magazines, collect photo graphs of items that grab your attention, browse the net and visit more than one furni ture store. Soon you’ll start noticing a pat tern – use it as a guide to your own, unique decorating style. Pick a signature piece: This is the most dominant item in a room and it adds to the allround feeling of that particular space. Sig nature pieces or focal points, should project and emphasise the style that you are trying to create. It can be anything from your bed frame, a chest of draws or a painting. Put it at the top of your shopping list, as the rest of your goodies should ideally tie in around it. Use a variety of textures and patterns: Mixing and matching different looks and feels can work in your favour – if done cor rectly. The contrast of smooth and rough materi als and the combination of shiny and matte

CHRISTMAS is around the corner, so it’s that time of the year when your inner handyman gets the bet ter of you and you tackle renovations at your home with vigour. But one of the trickiest tasks to master is the art of laying a tile. This task does not only require preci sion, but loads of patience as well. If you are considering tiling your floors, these tips will come in handy: ) Always start in the middle of the area you want to tile, That way the finished product will be even. ) Ensure that the spacing between tiles is be tween eight to 10mm. ) Use a builder’s line to achieve perfect straight ness. ) Use only small amounts of adhesive, spreading it evenly across the tile. ) Allow the tiles to set before applying grouting – a day should be enough. Use a damp cloth to clean the surface. ) Do not walk on the finished product for at least three days. Happy tiling!

home needs to be comfortable and practical – not only good to look at. Let the light in: This goes for interior light ing and natural light. If you have wide windows, draw back the drapes and let the sunlight shine through. The natural light will reflect nicely off white walls and neutral earthy tones. Interior light ing in your home is vital when decorating as it adds to the ambiance and should comple ment the theme of the room. You can choose from many different light ing fixtures like side lamps, hanging lamps, overhead fixtures and even chandeliers. – Women24

accessories will stop your space from look ing rigid and boring. Using a variety of tex tures will enhance visual interest and bring life to an otherwise dull home. Consider the function of the room: When decorating a room, have an idea of what the room will be used for. . Is there enough space for the activities that need to be done in that room? . Will your decorating style fit the room? If it is a play room, the theme and colour scheme should be bright, warm and playful, for example. If it’s your bedroom or a guest room, you might opt for something more se rene and calming. The bottom line: your

Work experience for college students ADVERTORIAL: Each day South African employers are confronted with a shortage of adequately quali fied and experienced staff. Students at Further Ed ucation and Training (FET) colleges are a good fu ture source of such staff. They can be tried out at a nominal cost to companies and at the same time develop their skills by offering them a short period of work experience.

the placement process. Job shadowing placement for National Certificate (Vocational) occurs in our June/July vacation period. Inservice work place ment for National Diploma students are scheduled for July and December. These experiential training sessions are aligned with Department of Higher Education and Training requirements. The only financial contribution expected from the host employer, is a nominal stipend to stu dents completing their 18 months inservice train ing to assist them in satisfying financial commit ments incurred during the inservice training peri od. The only other cost to the host employer is the notional one of supervising the students during their time in the company. We hope more companies will join us in this im portant exercise. Companies are invited to contact us to explore how placing our students can help grow their business and bottom line. For more in formation on work placement contact Winston Da mons by email at wdamons@cct.edu.za or Lelanie Louw at llouw@cct.edu.za or call (021) 404 6700. The College of Cape Town also offers bursaries. For more information call the info line at 086 010 3682, email info@cct.edu.za or visit www.cct.edu.za.

As work placement officers our assignment is to place students who are registered for National Certificate (Vocational), National Diploma and oth er college programmes with employers for work placebased experience (WBE) which could be in the form of job shadowing or inservice training. Our goal is to place students for between five to 10 consecutive days in each year of study for job shadowing and 18 months for inservice training. During these placements, employers are asked to orientate students to their companies and allow them to work alongside employees doing jobs re lated to the students’ field of study. For many young people, obtaining this kind of work experience has been lifetransforming. They have developed a better understanding of their chosen career and how it is practised in the work place. This has motivated them to work harder and succeed. Many students have forged relationships with employers which led to immediate offers of em ployment after graduation. Employers benefit, too. Students are a source of future employees that you can get to know before hir ing. By hosting students, employers get a chance to influence the training the college provides and slant it more towards the needs of your industry. Employers can also get points on their company’s BEE scorecard. CREATIVE: Jewellery design stu Should a company be dents at work. Buying clothes on a budget

2012

SPLURGE on clothing you never wear? Tracy Gold says stop! Here’s how. Do you know how much you spend on clothing and accessories each month or is it just a blur? Many of us don’t like to discuss, never mind think about, how much we spend. If you find that you keep buying clothing, but still have nothing to wear, then it’s time to reassess. Here are my top tips to making your wardrobe budget work for you: 1. Decide on a budget. Look carefully at what you are actually spending, what you can afford and what you want to spend. Then commit to that amount. 2. Avoid just buying on accounts. Limiting your self to stores that offer accounts limits your buy ing potential. There are many smaller stores out there that offer good value and something unique. 3. Take a look at what is in your wardrobe. En sure that you have a clear idea of what is in there so you can access what you need before going shopping. 4. Do some wardrobe and budget planning. A little bit of planning can go a long way to saving you time and money. Visit www.tracygold.co.za for more informa tion. – Women24

School’s out TWELVE years of schooling wind down for matriculants writing their final exams this week. The holidays beckon. Some are casting their sights on an easy summer. Fingers are trained on their cellphones to set in motion last-minute plans. Rest, relaxation and recuperation are on the cards. Many matriculants and students are headed for the Plett Rage at Plettenberg Bay. Some may have notions of using their school books as fuel for a bonfire or cut up hated school uniforms. They won’t have to face those dreaded teachers with their nonstop surprise quizzes, assignments and homework. That is, until the reality of tertiary education kicks in. For many, the hard work starts then. And most may deny it, but they will miss their school days – and even those teachers who gave them a hard time. These are the ones who will face hellishly long queues for campus registration. They will make those absolute final choices over which courses to study. They will worry about transport to new campuses, making friends, what to wear. Their parents will worry about paying the university fees. Four years will go by in a blink, then they will wonder where they will find employment as they clutch their newly-earned degrees. Not so for the families of three matriculants who died tragically on Saturday. The car in which the deceased – Keenan Smith, LeighAnne Swail and Kelly Ford – and fellow-matriculant Nazan Klaasens were driving collided with a Golden Arrow bus on Spine Road, Mitchell’s Plain. Klaasens is reportedly in a stable condition. Instead of marking another milestone in their lives, these teenagers will now be forever young. This tragedy is a reminder of our own mortality and that life is, sadly, too short. We ought to make the most of it – but sensibly. May all our young people take extra care and may the departed matriculants rest in peace.

Cash woes tthe he new struggle struggle EVERY DAY millions of the poor must make sacrifices to survive. We have the trolley patrollers, petty thieves, sex workers, car guards, the self-employed and odd-job people all trying to survive on a pittance. Many of them are looked down upon because of their choice of work. They don’t have to do such degrading work, but many have families to support and debt to pay. Government says they have structures in place to alleviate poor people’s burden. Does government really have this? There are crises

of unemployment, health and education, and a lack of housing. Is this the legacy for the next generation? The working class is even struggling to make ends meet. They include nurses, doctors, teachers and other civil servants. I wish our government can explain to the people what is really happening to the tax payers’ money. We are the working class. We, the people, are survivors of the struggle. We have had many setbacks, but we are learning to adapt to the system. YOLANDA ANDERSON

Domestic violence too close to home WOW! As I started reading the article (“Walking away from the pain”, People’s Post, 20 November) the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I couldn’t help but shiver. This was just too close to home. I have just come out of a 10-year relationship and a three-year marriage and every single word Sheila told you is the truth: you blame yourself, you believe you did something wrong, this man was never like this before. Maybe I should have, as in her case, just left the ironing and made the sandwich. I cannot explain how very real and completely emotionally overwhelming your article was! Thank you for having the “balls” to write about such a whispered about topic! Leaving is the hardest thing any woman ever does, but looking back, I wish I had done it 10 years ago. I am emotionally damaged and see

the effects our “fights” had on my now almost two-year-old every day. It is horrible and heartbreaking and you never think you are that woman. I don’t know if you have any information about meeting places or somewhere women who were abused can go to. I would love to know about them if you do. Regards from a completely awestruck woman who feels so relieved she is not alone! New notes confuse the elderly SENIOR citizens in poor communities have a special place in my heart. And when I hear of or see issues which affect them negatively I stand to attention. I have numerous friends on the Cape Flats who share my passion when it comes to assisting the poorest of the poor. It has come to my attention that when they get their pension or grants they are paid in the new R200 notes. When they use the money for purchases they confuse the R200 with the new R20 note, which, to those with poor sight, seems similar. Only an honest person will point out the mistake. Our councillors and banking officials should consider paying out the elderly in denominations of R100, R50 and R20 to avoid the confusion. KEITH BLAKE

Big hitting at Wynberg Super Sixes LIAM MOSES

IT WILL be raining boundaries in Wynberg this weekend when the Wynberg Cricket Club Super Sixes tournament takes place. The Super Sixes will pit 12 teams of six players against each other in 10-over matches. Each team will have just five overs to set a defendable score or surpass their opponent’s total, and every team member, except, the wicketkeeper will bowl an over. This is the second time the tournament is being hosted and Ebrahim-Nadeem Parker, head of youth coaching at Wynberg CC, says the format makes the game interesting for

purists and casual cricket watchers. “We actually found that spinners were the most economical, even though you think they are going to get hit,” says Parker. “So you still have to play good cricket and use proper technique, instead of just trying to bash the ball all over the park. It’s very entertaining and I think everybody really enjoyed themselves.” The first instalment of the tournament took place in March, but the organisers decided to move the event forward on the cricket calendar as they felt December was more suitable. The Super Sixes was created by Wynberg CC as an attempt to recreate the feel of the IPL for youths and, Parker says, all of the fanfare of the world’s most famous short form

cricket competition can be expected. “That’s why all the teams will have their own colours and their own logo. We sort of liven up the atmosphere and give them a platform to enjoy themselves,” he says. “Fans can expect entertaining and attacking cricket, as well as a lot of fun. We interview the captains on the microphone just like the IPL. They enjoy the spectacle of playing in a well organised tournament.” The inaugural tournament was won by the Wynberg Warriors team and the champions will return to defend their crown. Other teams participating are: Primroses, Blue Bells, Strandfontein A and B, Habsani Royals, Kalusta Superchargers A and B, Groote Schuur, Wynberg, Pumas, Wynberg

Warriors and St Augustines A and B. These 12 sides will be grouped into four pools of three teams each and, after a roundrobin stage, the top two teams will advance to the knockout stages of the competition. Several prizes will be up for grabs, including free entry to Ratanga Junction for the winning team, a Cape Cobras jersey and a signed Highveld Lions jersey. The winning team and individual award winners will also take home trophies and medals. Parker adds around 2 000 people are expected to attend the tournament, which starts at 08:30 on Sunday 2 December. Entry to the ground is free and children’s entertainment will be provided. For more information call Parker on 079 525 0184.

SKW prepare for the top flight LIAM MOSES

THE management of Scotcheskloof Walmers RFC are bullish about their chances in the SARU Community Cup, despite being drawn in one of the toughest groups in the competition. SKW were drawn in Group A of the inaugural tournament, along with Jonsson College Rovers (KZN), GAP Despatch (EP), Villagers Worcester (Boland) and Sishen (Griquas). But despite the quality of the opposition in the pool the club’s director of coaching, Labeeb Levy, is positive his team is up for the challenge. “We are in the ‘pool of death’ because we’ve got the Eastern Province runners up and the

Boland, Griquas and KZN champions,” says Levy. “But we are busy building our team and will give it our best. At the end of the day it’s 15 players against 15 players. You give people respect, but you don’t have to fear them. You just have to prepare properly and take the game to them. Hopefully the club can attract more players, administrators and coaches.” The tournament, which will replace the National Club Championships, will kick off on Saturday 16 February and feature the top non-university teams in the country. Rovers are also the current National Club Championships holders, while Despatch finished second on the Grand Challenge log – just seven points behind Nelson Mandela University. Villagers won the Boland Pre-

mier League by 14 points and Sishen took the Griquas Premier League by seven points. SKW are set to start training for the competition this week and will focus on strengthening and bringing depth to the first team squad. They will need to finish first or second on the table in order to achieve their primary goal of advancing beyond the second round of the competition. To achieve this, the will need to defeat at least three of the teams in the group. Levy admits the other participating clubs have an edge on SKW in terms of resources, saying the club urgently needs to find a sponsor if they are to compete at that level. “We are lacking some resources, which we will fill soon. We need to up our resources in

all capacities – from players to facilities. That’s the shortage we need to fill else we are going to be in trouble,” says Levy. “We are looking for sponsors, for finance and products. We (currently) don’t have a sponsor, so we are looking for someone to give all of our players access to a gym, supplements and warm up equipment.” SKW qualified for the tournament as a wildcard selection, despite finishing below Hamiltons on the Super League A table. They will be joined by league runners-up Durbanville-Bellville. . Durbanville-Bellville have been drawn in Group B, along with Pretoria Police (Blue Bulls), Bloemfontein Police (Freestate), Welkom Rovers (Griffons) and African Bombers (EP).

Cape NFD derby set to enthral LIAM MOSES

SANTOS FC will go into tomorrow’s clash with neighbours Milano United flush with confidence, after securing a morale boosting victory in the National First Division (NFD) over the weekend. Santos been inconsistent this season, having lost two games and drawn as many as they have won, but the Lansdowne based club now seem to have found their form. The People’s Team convincingly brushed aside Witbank Spurs 4-1 at the Puma Rugby Stadium on Sunday, claiming their third victory of the season. However, Theo Hempe, head coach at Mi-

The Grassy Park club are currently just one place above Santos on the table in sixth and they will also be buoyed after their performance at the weekend. Milano returned to winning ways on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over FC AK at the Rooikraans Sports Complex, after losing 3-2 in their last game against league leaders Mpumalanga Black Aces. The defeat was Milano’s first at home this season and Hempe blamed his side’s poor defensive performance for the loss. He says his team were much improved this time around. “The way the players responded after our last game was very positive; tt was a huge improvement. But there is still room for im-

lano, believes his side will be more than a match for their more illustrious opponents when they meet at Athlone Stadium tomorrow (Wednesday) at 19:30. “It is a derby, so whether it’s a high scoring or low scoring game, the aim is to win. We want to defend as well as we can, but at the end of the days it’s just about the three points,” says Hempe. “We feel that we have the ammunition and we have a lot of our players back from injury. We are confident that we can pull off the victory.” Milano’s record in the competition this season reads exactly the same as their local rivals, with three wins, three draws and two losses.

provement, because we still gave them a soft goal,” he says. “If we defended better and pressed better then the game would have been a lot easier. We worked on our pressing from the front (after the last game). We don’t just want to blame our defenders each time. It’s everyone’s responsibility. When we let in that soft goal, it just showed us there are things we need to perfect.” The Milano coach believes the battle for control of the midfield will be the most important in tomorrow’s tactical war at Athlone Stadium, but concedes the derby atmosphere may have an even bigger impact. “The biggest difference is the people know every player. “It’s just much more personal than playing teams from Johannesburg. “The final thing is just about the passion; the passion is what drives you and takes you through the game.”

Tuesday 27 November 2012 ALL THE ACTION: Milano United beat FC AK 31 at the Rooikraans Sports Complex in Grassy Park in the National First Division (NFD)on Sunday. On the left: Wing Devon Saal (22) celebrates with team mate Bridget Motha after scoring against FC AK. On the right: Keanan Thomas hits a shot beyond the reach of the FC AK keeper for one of his side’s goals. The victory set up a tantalising clash against neighbours Santos FC at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday in the NFD. Santos also claimed victory in their fixture on Sunday. They beat Witbank Spurs 41 in Mpumalanga. Both teams will be looking to continue with winning ways and claim bragging rights in the newest Cape Derby.
