Hout Bay High School learner believes everyone has a story to tell and everyone should listen for the better of the community. Grade 11 learner Anthony Leggett says South Africans have a lot to tell and often people clash because they don’t understand each other or their backgrounds. Through his project, Humans of Cape Town, Leggett hopes people will take a few minutes to interact and get to know the next person and listen to their stories of love, loss, strength, courage and hope, among other things. Humans of Cape Town is based on the popular Facebook page Humans of New York (Hony). Hony is a photo blog of portraits and interviews of people found on the streets of New York City. Brandon Stanton launched it in 2010 and recently started doing a video series of New Yorkers as well. Leggett says he wants to tell the stories of people in Cape Town. “I believe we have a rich history that no-one else can tell except ourselves. I believe there is someone out there who is willing to listen and I want to make this about interaction and people being able to open up to each other and talk about their issues, challenges and backgrounds, among other things. “People are so busy and they have forgotten about the simple things in life. Through this I want people to appreciate the simple things, talk about them,” says Leggett.

He is putting everything together and opening social media pages for his project. He hopes to have everything in motion by the end of the year. “This is for everyone in Cape Town and I hope everyone will take part and we will share our experiences and our stories and build a better country and a community that we want to see,” he says. Leggett says he loves telling other people’s stories. He is also a freelance photographer and his wish is to have billboards of the people featured on Humans of Cape Town all over. “This will spark a conversation. I will definitely start in Hout Bay which is my community and we have a lot of tourists here. When I put pictures of the people that we will interview someone will see their picture and when they meet that particular person they will want to hear more of their story. I want people to know each other. “For me this project is also about telling other young people to not be afraid. This is a big project but I’m putting everything in. As young people we should not live in shadows. There is so much that we can do and I hope more people will come out and shine,” he says. Like for any other project, Leggett says he needs volunteers. “This is not my project but about the community’s. If you can take pictures, are a writer a business person, come and work with us. We can only become a better community by working together and always being there to listen.” V For more information call Anthony Leg gett on 071 978 5435.

‘Daar kom die ... parade’? Tweede Nuwe Jaar celebrations are making way for a new klopse march, called the Cape Town Street Parade. This was announced last week, in a partnership between the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association and the City of Cape Town. The event is scheduled for Tuesday 2 January. Previously known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar, the Cape Town Street Parade aims to be an inclusive carnival for all the people who participate in it and who support it – stakeholders, communities and all cultures and religions, the association says in a

statement. “It will build on the long tradition and legacy of the Voorsmakie and Tweede Nuwe Jaar, with the key aim of unifying the people of the Western Cape and involving the most vulnerable on the Cape Flats through opportunities for youth and cultural development and employment creation,” the association states. “Over the last two years, the association, together with the extended team of experts and friends of the carnival, have been painstakingly analysing the carnival with a view to building on the posi-

tive aspects which the Voorsmakie and Tweede Nuwe Jaar represent in the lives of the people of the Western Cape.” The new format aims to help the carnival make money in such a way that it becomes sustainable. Muneeb Gambeno, director of the association, says: “It is time for Cape Town and the klopse of this city to start latching on to the momentum being created by the Cape Town Street Parade. The time for the change is now and everyone has to start committing in order to finally turn this event into the jewel event that we want it to be.”

encourage people of all ages to participate in constructive competition and positive behaviour, embracing the life-affirming qualities in all sport and promoting the relationship amongst our people, no matter what their race, creed or religion.” All the races will start at Glendale High School and end at Rocklands Sports Field. Duminy will also be lacing up his running shoes to join the 5km race. On the day, participants and spectators can enjoy activities with Making an Impact through Sport (Mits), minstrels, drum majorettes, food trucks and coffee stalls. Special attention would be given to certain areas, like beaches and other public places that would host events, including shopping centres, he said. National deputy police

Residents were also warned to be vigilant while drawing money at ATMs. “Know whom you are queuing with at ATMs,” he said.

port as Dan Plato, provincial minister for community safety, walked and talked with Fox on the Friday evening. Plato said autism awareness was muchneeded in communities and to have people like Fox help the less fortunate was a blessing to the nation. Another guest, Dr Nandini Gokulchandran, deputy director and head of medical service of NeurioGen Brain and Spine Institute in India, explained autism and the help that was available to affected children. She emphasised the institute’s plan to strengthen relations with South Africa through Nosh for Josh. Gabriela Rishka Wiener of the foundation says they are extremely grateful to Fox and the Waterfront for giving them the platform to promote autism awareness.

M

agician Russell Fox has set a new Guinness World Record by walking barefoot on a bed of broken wine bottles for 29 hours. He started his challenge at the V&A Waterfront on Friday at 18:00 and finished on Saturday at 23:00. His record-breaking feat raised funds for the Nosh for Josh Foundation which promotes autism awareness and fights children’s diseases. Fox said yesterday he could still not believe he had broken the record. “It is still sinking in, I cannot explain how I feel, and sometimes I do not believe I actually broke the record. “It was not an easy challenge and I am never walking on glass for that length of time ever again. “I am glad I could do something for Nosh for Josh and the children,” said Fox. His endurance feat saw thousands of people cheering Fox on and enjoying the entertainment line-up that was organised for the challenge. Visitors also got a chance to interact and take photos with the Transformers characters Bumblebee and Optimus Prime. The event drew an audience from far. As he was walking on the stage messages of support came from as far as the United States. One visitor, Mandisa Keswa, said it was amazing to see someone take a risk for the betterment of other people’s lives. She said the campaign was amazing and she was extremely excited about getting a chance to meet some of the Transformers characters. Government officials also gave their sup-

I heard some people in my street talking about boxing and they said they would go for training. They were so excited about it and I thought I would also join. Tipple strikes platinum G

root Constantia’s wines have bagged more awards. Groot Constantia’s wines won two silver, a gold, two double gold and a platinum award at this year’s Michaelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards at the end of September. Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia, says the awards give local and foreign wines the opportunity to be judged by acclaimed wine experts from around the world. Groot Constantia’s 2015 Merlot and the 2010 Gouverneurs Reserve Red (entered as a Golden Oldie) won silver awards. The 2009 Gouverneurs Reserve Red (also a Golden Oldie entry) won a gold award and the 2015 Shiraz and 2015 Cabernet won double gold Grand D’or prizes. The 2014 Grand Constance, Groot Constantia’s flagship wine, achieved the highest possible accolade by winning a platinum award, improving on its gold award of last year. The wine farm celebrated with a wine and chocolate pairing for reporters and bloggers last week. Those attending the event also viewed art by local artist Ann Gadd who is known for her “sheep/ewe” series of work. Naudé says they decided several years ago to recreate the renowned Grand Constance wine under the guidance of award-winning winemaker Boela Gerber. The “new” Grand Constance has not let its ancestor down and continues to rake in the awards, having achieved the highest possible honour at Asia’s leading wine competition last year where it received platinum for being the Best South African Sweet Wine. The 2015 Grand Constance vintage received a grand gold award at the globally-renowned Monde Selection International

Wine Contest last year. Most recently this wine was awarded a gold medal and a position among the top 10 muscats in the world at the annual Muscats du Monde wine competition. Grand Constance has also achieved a Best in its Class at the Top 100 SA Wine awards. “We are delighted and proud of this latest platinum achievement by our Grand Constance – a wine that, due to its long history with Groot Constantia, we all hold close to our hearts. Groot Constantia’s wines, which are hand-crafted in small volumes, in general continue to rake in the awards, with the estate having won over 100 top accolades in the past 10 years alone,” says Naudé. New tariffs for entry to Cape Point and Boulders Beach will make the attraction more affordable for locals. The introduction of differential conservation fees was announced by Sanparks on Wednesday and will come into effect from November next year. The new tariff structure will see the current entry price of R145 for Cape Point and R75 at Boulders increase for tourists by almost 50%, while almost halving for locals. From November next year, tourists will be expected to pay around R300 for entry to Cape Point and R150 for Boulders, with South African residents paying R75 and R35 respectively. Last year, Cape Point had more than a million visitors, surpassing all previous records for the number of visitors to the attraction in a single year (“Most visitors ever to Point”, People’s Post, 13 December 2016). Boulders Beach sees around 850 000 visitors a year, explains Sanparks spokesperson Merle Collins. The higher fees for tourists are in line with international attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower. Differential fees have been in place at national parks since 2002, Joep Stevens, Sanparks general manager for strategic tourism services, explained on Wednesday.

The system was introduced to charge conservation fees in line with other national parks on the continent. It was decided then to have a reduced fee for South African residents as they already made a contribution to the national parks via the national budget, because Sanparks received government grants, Stevens said on Wednesday. Around a quarter of visitors to national parks were tourists, Stevens explained. Around 35% of the total revenue of all 19 national parks came from the conservation fees charged per night spent in the parks, he added. The differential fees were rolled out to most other national parks, such as the Kruger National Park and Addo Elephant Park, but were never implemented at Table Mountain National Park due to the complexity of processing visitors at the Cape Point and Boulders access points – the high volume of visitors made it difficult to request that they produce a form of identity or proof of residency to qualify for the reduced tariff. A new system is being sourced to implement the new fee structure and will be workshopped with local tour guide companies. It is expected that some form of online pre-registration will be incorporated, which will reduce the amount of processing required at entry gates.

Justin Schonegevel of the local Rotary Club says learners of two Norwegian schools raise funds every year by working one day of the year and donating these funds to a project called Action South Africa. “The funds raised are managed by a committee of Wynberg Rotary for the benefit of five primary schools and two secondary schools in Grassy Park, Lotus River and Zeekoevlei. “In this year alone the Norwegian committee gave out bursaries to the value of R940 000,” says Schonegevel.

During the past week four learners and two teachers of Haugaland Videregående Skole from Haugesund, Norway visited Cape Town as part of the project. The group was hosted by the local Rotary Club and shown the impact that their donations have made over the years. Kjetil Sturtzel, a Haugasand teacher, says: “Seeing how the money is spent, first-hand, makes you reflect more upon how much these schools are able to do with the limited resources they have.” A bursary evening was held at Fairmount Secondary School on Wednesday 18 October and a representation of the 700 learners received their bursaries.

ocal learners were amongst the most promising entrepreneurial teenagers who were celebrated at the Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge awards over the weekend. The challenge is aimed at nurturing the entrepreneurial mindsets of the country’s youth with a series of online challenges that put 4500 high school learners to the test. The top 20 performers from around the country were acknowledged at the awards. Kai Parsons, a learner of Cedar House School in Kenilworth, won the challenge with second and third spot going to two learners from Bridge House in Franschhoek. Fourth place was taken by Maria Litchtenberg of Reddam House School in Constantia and fifth place was won by Nikita Roberts of Rustenberg Girls’ High School in Rosebank. The Western Cape was the top performing province in the challenge, with nine learners in the overall top 20, followed by Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal with five candidates each. The inaugural challenge, used to creatively coach high school learners to think entrepreneurially, was regarded as a success by organisers and proves to them that webbased, experiential learning is an effective way to foster a culture of entrepreneurship among South Africa’s youth. According to the competition’s Anthony Selley, a hundred schools from around the country participated in the six-week challenge, which ran from 14 August to 22 September. The challenge used digital learning to nurture an entrepreneurial mindset among learners in Grades 8 to 11 and to educate them on how best to act and think like entrepreneurs. Teachers and parents who support the spirit of entrepreneurship among children were also encouraged to sign up and

Promising entrepreneurs competed recently and a local learner came fourth nationally. participate. “We are enormously encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by both learners and teachers. To have participation from schools representing a wide spectrum of socio-economic and geographic situations in our inaugural year justifies our belief that web-based learning offers an effective way to grow entrepreneurial learning for teenagers from all walks of life,” Selley says. The entrepreneurship challenge comprised a series of small challenges measured on a points system. Selley explains that more complex challenges were worth more points, but to reach the difficult phases, candidates needed to pass the easy ones first. Each week candidates logged onto a website to complete

a series of challenges, which took between 15 minutes to an hour to complete. During each challenge, participants were exposed to a range of mindsets, habits and concepts for entrepreneurs, as well as to some of the latest tech developments on platforms like Blockchain, digital biology, artificial intelligence, the “internet of things” and 3D printing. He says some challenges were theoretically based, others were practically based and some involved uploading images. “The success of the challenge demonstrates that our youth see the great value that lies in entrepreneurship, especially as a vehicle for change for our country,” Selley says.

I had the wonderful honour of working with the first lead tenor of colour, the late Ronald Theys who died in 2014. We met initially at Spes Bona High School in Athlone in 1977, performing Shakespeare’s The Tempest, starring Denise Newman as Miranda, Alexander Sinton High English teacher Robert Green as Prospero and Reggie Norris (who later emigrated to Australia) as Caliban, and again the following year at the Eoan Group performing in the production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Ronnie Theys, an opera tenor of note, was cast in acting roles with me. He lived in Mitchell’s Plain and worked for Montays Furnishers. His love for opera never waned, despite the adversities of apartheid while growing up in District Six, and he proudly educated me in his craft and the Eoan Group’s historical visit to Europe with my cousin, soprano singer Vera Gow. Ronnie was a prankster too, and I enjoyed his humour. My last encounter with Ronnie was in London in July 1998, when he was invited with his tenor colleagues to perform in Brighton. I’m proud of his son Nathan’s epic achievement of winning at the Cape Town International Film Market and Festival, and Ronnie would have been equally proud. May Nathan’s film be successful and Ronnie’s memory live long – a befitting tribute to his legacy. MARK KLEINSCHMIDT Kenwyn

Give care for need not age Although admirable that JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services, launched “better health services” (“Elderly in front of health queue”, People’s Post, 24 October), the practice is deemed both biased and non-compliant as, according to legislation, all citizens become elders at 60. The process of fast-tracking and prioritising elderly individuals based on age rather than needs should also be reviewed, as a patient with a managed chronic illness such as hypertension or diabetes or collecting medication at the dispensary of a healthcare facility needs a different approach to one suffering from chest pains of an impending heart attack for which the window period is dire. The belief is that there should be ongoing communication with both the families assisting the elderly patients and all healthcare practitioners to ensure congruence at the referral stage to alleviate the trauma and negative impact of a day hospital visit, for whatever reason, experienced by the community at large. TOURISM

A taste of ‘our botanical heritage’ NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

H

oneybush tea, rose pelargonium cordial and buchu brandy are just some of the floral notes you can taste in a new tourism experience. Based at the visitor centre in the Company’s Garden, the tasting experience showcases some of Cape Town’s edible gems – all forms of fynbos. Fynbos forms an integral part of the botanical heritage of the Western Cape, with the protected flora making up around 80%

of the Cape floral kingdom and consisting of around 6000 species. Visitors can experience the flavours of rhino bush (named after Simon van der Stel noticed rhinos in the Cape and Stellenbosch grazing on it), cancer bush, snow bush, buchu and pelargoniums. The Cape Town Fynbos Experience is a first, offering teas and infusions made with local fynbos, as well as tinctures and digestives. Aside from the tasting, there are also apothecary workshops, a florist and a heritage shop. The link to the medicinal garden in the Company’s Gardens is also highlighted. The experience was conceived by Giselle Courtney, owner of Get to the Point Experiences, after she bought a farm in Wellington. Adamant she would learn all she could about the various plants growing on the property, Courtney began a love affair with fynbos that has seen her putting in four years of research into the edible plants. The tasting experience, however, is not about culinary arts, Courtney explains, but rather highlighting the traditional and medicinal value of the plants. “This is a raw fynbos experience,” she says. “Fynbos is medicinal, but there’s another element: The sense and feeling we get when we see it growing on the mountain.” V For more information visit www.gettothepoint.co.za or call 066 225 5722.

WATER CRISIS

Desalination plant plans start flowing NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

T

wo tenders for desalination plants have already been awarded, with another three expected to be awarded this week. The City of Cape Town awarded tenders to Water Solutions Proxy JV for the Monwabisi and Strandfontein desalination plants two weeks ago, mayor Patricia de Lille has confirmed. Construction is expected to get underway this month and next month. There are also plans to install desalination plants in Hout Bay, Granger Bay, Red Hill/ Dido Valley, Harmony Park and Cape Town

Harbour. The tenders for Hout Bay, Dido Valley and the Harmony Park desalination plants will be awarded this week. The tenders for the other desalination projects are in various stages of the procurement process. “The City is securing our water resilience through saving and bringing more alternative water sources into our network,” the mayor said during a recent site visit to the planned location of a desalination plant at the V&A Waterfront. “One such water source is the temporary desalination plant the City is building on East Pier Road in the Waterfront. An openair parking lot opposite the heliports will be

converted into a desalination plant that will produce 2m litres of water every day. The Waterfront made the land available to the City at no cost.” The City is also busy getting groundwater from the at Atlantis and Silwerstroom, Cape Flats, Cape Peninsula and Hottentots-Holland aquifers. The City has already managed to increase the production capacity of the existing Atlantis and Silwerstroom aquifer by 5m litres per day. This will increase incrementally to 25m litres per day. Pipeline work has already started at the Zandvliet wastewater treatment works and the yield will rise incrementally from this source to 10m litres per day. “The City is put-

ting every possible resource into our additional water supply programme and our teams are working around the clock and as fast as possible to deliver this programme. We are using accelerated tender processes and procurement processes are being run in parallel with one another. Augmentation schemes will come online from early next year, rising incrementally to a point where we will see substantial quantities by end May next year,” De Lille said. Following concerns about the placement of a desalination plant in Granger Bay, the tender was re-advertised, said De Lille (“Locals don’t want water plant close by”, People’s Post, 5 September).

Roses seal Sasol league crown ANDRE CRUYWAGEN

C

ape Town Roses were crowned Sasol Safa provincial league winners after they beat Virgo Ladies 3-0 in a stunning last-round fixture played in NY49 on Sunday. The hosts played with confidence and determination after they experienced a moment of pressure from Virgo. Ode Fulutidulu scored a hat-trick with her zig-zagging fast rhythm and was the key striker in the league winners’ squad that caused mayhem for Virgo. The Roses were delighted to be crowned this year’s champions after a window of opportunity which UWC let slip away. “We congratulate them on their wellearned achievement and wish them well for the national playoffs in the first weekend of December,” says Simphiwe Clans, Safa provincial secretary. “I am so happy to win while still building my team and we are delighted for the play-

offs and hope to be crowned national champions,” says Roses coach Xolile Madikane. In another fixture, Santos Ladies easily disposed of Milano Ladies United 11-1 in their last fixture played at Santos academy on Saturday. Banyana striker for Santos Lucinda Croy was instrumental with her ball play, netting a hat-trick. Miché Minnies (four goals), Natasha Fortuin, Chantey Norris, Shana Kallis and Astrid Boks all scored for Santos while Jessica Glouer scored the consolation goal for the visitors. RV United narrowly beat Maties 2-1 at Lentelus sports ground on Saturday. The students kicked off with a positive mood but failed to score from vital chances. Nikelwa Mdemka and Sive Kenke scored for RV United while Gaironesa Maclobo scored to restore the pride within the Matie camp. Ikamva FC defaulted against UWC Ladies in their scheduled encounter on Saturday and subsequently denied themselves three points.

A’s squander big lead SEAN CAMPBELL The VOB Macaws fought back from 6-0 down to score runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to secure a 11-8 victory against Athlone A’s – their second of the Baseball Association Western Province major league season. Dean Jacobs, first pitcher of the A’s, started with two strikeouts (1.2 innings, three hits, six runs, four walks, two hits by pitch and two strikeouts). In the middle of the game was the gap VOB required to start their victory march. Even experienced campaigner Carl Michaels (three innings, four hits, five runs, two walks and two strikeouts) could not stop VOB’s momentum. This all after youngster Cameron Fortuin (3.1 innings, a hit, no runs, three walks and seven strikeouts) gave A’s a pretty good start. Another experienced campaigner, Paul Bell (4/4), and comeback player Jody Burch (2/5), who both batted in three runs, were the catalyst for VOB’s comeback. This combined with Jayde Thorne minimising A’s ability to score consistent runs. Thorne (4.2 innings, six hits, two runs, two walks and six strikeouts) came on in the fifth inning when starter Michael Scritten (4.1 innings, four hits, six runs, four walks, two hits by pitch and three strikeouts) ran into difficulty in the fifth inning. The best hitters for the A’s were Dillan Daniels (4/5) and PJ Abrahams (2/3). A’s had ten hits, left ten runners on base and made four errors. VOB had eight hits, left seven runners on base and made one error. Consistent hitting by Keenan Clarke (3/4), with four runs batted in, and Kyle Botha (3/5), with three runs batted in, helped Bothasig Knights to inflict a 17-5 defeat for Grassy Park Crusaders – their first this season. Bothasig amassed fourteen hits off the

combined pitching of Brent Fransman, Jarrod Williams and Ashwin Kleintjies in seven innings. Besides the first inning, Bothasig scored in every inning. Crusaders managed to score one run in the fourth and two runs in the seventh inning. Darryn Smith threw the first five innings after which DJ Stark closed out the last two to keep Bothasig unbeaten. Another unbeaten team, Bellville Tygers, travelled to Maitland Giants and secured a 11-1 win in seven innings. Westridge Yankees beat Durbanville Villans 10-2 in Westridge to secure their third win of the season. Helderberg Pirates forfeited their game to Van der Stel as a team member got married on Saturday with seven first team players attending the wedding. After five rounds Bothasig Knights and Bellville Tygers remain unbeaten on ten points, followed by Grassy Park Crusaders on eight points. Hout Bay United destroyed by Magic display in soccer battle ANDRE CRUYWAGEN The Magic destroyed Hout Bay United FC 2-0 in a vibrant ABC Motsepe provincial firstround battle at Old Mutual sport ground on Friday night. Hosts Old Mutual were extraordinary with their attacking play, which caused confusion among the visitors’ defence ranks. Therlo Moosa gave his team a steady lead from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. Thando Mngomeni, the hosts’ trump card, scored a superb volley in the 38th minute that ignited his team. Glendene United toppled Sizwe United 3-1 in their away fixture at Gugulethu Stadium. Glen Hahn, Shaheed Abrahams and Sinesipho Ntumbukana propelled their team to the win by scoring brilliant goals. In the second half, the hosts were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty, but Andile Skelenge’s effort was stopped by Glendene United’s goalkeeper Carlyn Davids. Sinethembi Mti scored for the hosts, but his attempt could not salvage the game for them. Ikapa Sporting hammered Santos 3-1 in their fixture at Thornton sports complex. Santos again failed in their efforts with the

visitors in full command. Alcardo van Graan (two goals) and Chad Roman sealed the victory while Wilfred Messiah scored for the hosts. Jomo Powers recorded their first victory when they beat Royal Blues 3-1 at Robinvale Stadium. The visitors stormed the hosts with an attacking kick-off but their strikers couldn’t score from early opportunities. Clayton Daniels, the anchor of the host squad, scored a brace of goals. Wayne Hare also scored, while Justin Heyns scored for the visitors.

SAB league In an evenly poised SAB Safa Cape Town fixture at Erica Park on Saturday, Bellstar drew 3-3 against Junction Rivers. Both teams refused to back down and played excellent soccer. After a first half ending 1-1, the strikers set the tone for the electrifying game. Shafiek Wilson, Robert Snell (free kick) and Ismail Loot scored for the hosts while Antonio Thomas, Junaid Manual and Shafiek Serelma scored for the Rygate-affiliated team. The visitors’ strikers had the ability to criss-cross the hosts’ goal area. The home team countered them with attacking speed.

T

he beasts have landed for the first ever Gumtree South Africa World RX event. Teams will be given a chance to settle in and set up for the weekend at Killarney. They have promised to come show off at the V&A Waterfront on Thursday at 12:30 when they will be driving through the Waterfront before parking in the square in front of the ferris wheel. While the final round of the Gumtree FIA World Rallycross Championship on Saturday and Sunday will be quite unlike any other major motorsport meeting ever staged in South Africa, it is going to be ideal for local petrol heads.

In addition to the grandstands that are close to the racing, there’s the raised bank on the west (or river) side of the complex that is being offered to spectators at a special price. No cars will be allowed in this area, from where the view of the racing, even at grass level, is also virtually unimpeded. Saturday begins with practice sessions, followed by a variety of other events, including an aerobatic display by the Silver Falcons. Sunday starts with the final qualifying sessions. After that, the racing is split up into a series of snappy heats, semi-finals and finals – with limited entries in each of them – for MSA Rally cars, RX2 Rallycross cars

and World RX Supercars. The RX2 category for 310-bhp, mid-engined, all-wheeldrive missiles was only launched this year. Gaps between races will be filled with drifting and stunting, the monster riot rig, pit walks for different groups of spectators and displays by the Silver Falcons, Drivers include Johan Kristoffersson, who has already clinched this year’s world title in his VW Polo Supercar. Petter Solberg, a former world rally and double rallycross champion, is second in a similar VW Polo, but only a single point ahead of Audi S1 driver Mattias Ekstrom, who was the German Touring Car (DTM) titleholder for two seasons and the top rallycross scorer last year.

Sebastien Loeb has won nine FIA world rally titles, finished second in the Le Mans 24hour race and second in the gruelling Dakar Rally, and set a new record for the American Pikes Peak hill climb, where cars ascend to an altitude more than four times higher than Table Mountain. Parking inside Killarney will be limited. There is parking in Potsdam Road, near the Blouberg Road T-junction. Blouberg Primary School in Blouberg Road offers another alternative, with the trip from there to Killarney in a MyCiTi bus available. A MyCiTi stop is conveniently located at the Killarney entrance. Or park your two-wheeler at the track for R50 for two days. All event and parking tickets are valid for both days, but must be bought online before the event at ticketpros.co.za. Food and drinks may not be brought in and there will be a number of vendors around the circuit. The clubhouse tuck shop will also be open. Braai equipment, umbrellas and folding chairs are not allowed. Cushions will be available. V A limited number of tickets are still available at R700 for a grandstand seat and R400 for an unreserved ticket. Entry for children under 16 costs R220, while there is no charge for children under 12 accompanied by a paying adult.
