boy (6) from New Horizons in Pelican Park was hospitalised after a homemade acid bomb exploded in his face last week. According to a witness, the Grade 1 learner of Zeekoevlei Primary School was handed a bomb by a teenage boy at a park near Haroon Street, Eagle Park on Thursday afternoon while playing with his siblings. The boy says he was asked to shake the bottle before it exploded. He spent days at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital after he suffered

burns to his eyes, face, chest and stomach. Washiela Maarsdorp, a resident of Haroon Street, saw the explosion. “The bigger boy approached Mika-eal, handed over the bottle and asked him to shake it. The next thing we knew, there was a loud bang and terrifying screams,” she says. “My mother ran to help him and fetched a cloth from one of the houses close by. She wiped his face and there was blood all over and his skin came off. When we undressed him, we saw the hole in his chest. They rushed him to the hospital.” His distraught mother, Andrika Jacobs, says she will lay charges against the teen this week.

Jacobs says the teen claims the acid bomb was taken from his school’s science lab. “I went to his parents and they don’t seem to care,” she says. Jacobs says doctors feared her son might lose his eyesight on the day of the explosion. “It was really bad and he couldn’t open his eyes at all. Doctors also had to remove the remains of the bomb from his skin. This included pieces from a plastic bottle. The remains of the bomb were stuck deep in his chest, causing the skin to burn around it. “Mika-eal has to return to hospital this week and will be staying there for the next few days. He only came home for the weekend. Travelling is a major issue for us. We

‘Blindness is not end of the road’ AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem A member of the League of the Friends of the Blind (Lofob) in Grassy Park is calling on the community to stand together in support of those struggling to find their feet after losing their eyesight. The community worker and manager of Lofob, Heidi Volkwijn, says it is never too late to start over. Her journey started after losing her sight while writing her Grade 11 school exams. “The hardest part of my journey is undoubtedly my experience of losing my sight at the age of 17. “I cannot begin to describe my feelings of despair and disbelief as doctors told my parents they had done all they could to save my sight and there was no chance of me ever seeing again,” she says. “It felt like I was caught up in a disastrous whirlwind as I contemplated my future. I had big dreams of my future studies, dreamt of falling in love with the man of my Heidi dreams and one day having a family ... and then the carpet was pulled out from under me.” She was brought to Lofob. After getting the necessary help from the centre, Volkwijn managed to work herself up with the hopes of inspiring other people in the same situation. She went through an independence

experience. “Therefore, I would say my most rewarding experience is the fact that I manage the services to youth and adults programme at Lofob because I have the opportunity every day to inspire young blind people who walk through our doors and to tell them that blindness does not have to mean the end of the road,” she explains. “It is not an easy journey to go through, but with the correct support and independence training there is nothing a blind person can’t achieve. “My life is richer every day when I see a blind person progressing and overcoming the challenges they have been presented with because of their disability.” Volkwijn has completed various courses and served on a number of committees of the South African National Council for the Blind in the Western Cape. In 2008, she presented a paper on sustaining and developing a community-based organisation at the World Blind Union General AssemVolkwijn PHOTO: AISHAH CASSIEM bly in Switzerland. Lotus learners hunt for green treasures Learners of six schools across the city competed in the Green Amazing Race hosted by a Cape Town-based environmental group last Saturday. The challenge held by Project 90 by 2030 at Green Point Urban Park was aimed at creating a platform for the youth to take action and to inspire others in their schools and communities. Under the supervision of the project’s mentors and staff, the learners raced to solve a series of clues and puzzles, to find locations within the park and complete tasks that tested their knowledge, understanding of climate change and team leadership skills. Participants were given a chance to share facts and images of what they had learnt and constructed on their personal social media pages. “It was good to see learners from the different schools chatting together, taking selfies and having fun. One of our strengths is the ability to bring young people from diverse backgrounds together for days like this,” says event organiser Athenkosi Baba. MORTUARIES

Still battling backlogs AISHAH CASSIEM @aishah_cassiem

M

embers of the Islamic Burial Council in Durban made their way to Cape Town last week to help find solutions for the current backlog at mortuaries. Organisation chairperson Ahmed Paruk says the issue can be dealt with better if the Muslim community stands together. Paruk visited various masjids and organisations to raise awareness of the delay in the release of Muslim bodies to families, which is breaking the Islamic burial procedure. Muslims across the city are still battling the frustration, some saying they are also disappointed in the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC). “I feel sorry for the people of Cape Town. They have not done enough. The postmortems should have been done by now,” Paruk says. Officials of the health department confirm that Salt River mortuary has 69 bodies that require postmortem examination. Of these, six are Muslim. Two of the six bodies have not been identified. From Monday 9 October to Sunday 5 November, they received 35 Muslim bodies. Of these, 28 were released after between one and seven days. Tygerberg mortuary currently has 92 bodies that require postmortem examination. Of these, three are Muslim. One has not

been identified yet. From Monday 9 October to Monday 6 November they received 18 Muslim bodies. Of these, 17 were released after two to six days. “The state is telling us that they have a backlog of corpses and Muslims have to go on a queuing system. I don’t think this is fair because when the health department took over from the police service, the standing order was transferred to their department and bodies were supposed to be released on the same day. Unfortunately, this is not happening,” says Paruk. “This issue is really bad and we need to take action against it as soon as possible. “If this had been in KwaZulu-Natal, my head [as chairperson] would have been on a silver platter a long time ago. This is how bad the issue is.” Paruk says his team has been consulting with the United Ulama Council of South Africa. “The time has come for us to have a national body representing Muslims in the country. This is just the beginning for Cape Town. In years to come, we will have another issue [for instance that] there is no space to bury bodies and you will have to do cremation. What will we do then? This is an appropriate time to put the right structure in place for a unified body that knows about burial.” On Saturday the Western Cape Muslim Undertakers Forum joined Paruk to discuss

the issue. “We were the first team to assist in facilitating the first batch of bodies released when the issue prevailed. We have been monitoring the process ever since, in order to look at the turnaround time to analyse and study the situation, and to have an informed and knowledgeable impact when we do engage with relevant departments,” says the forum’s Mogammad Abrahams. “To date we can say there have been minimal changes and the undertakers from this city have been working hard to release the bodies and to create a sense of communication amongst them. All of this took place before the meeting between the MJC and the health minister.” He says the dignity of Muslims is being tested, making it difficult for the undertakers as well. He feels the MJC has failed them. “We need to understand that the Islamic principals are not being upheld by religious bodies,” he says, adding that they support Paruk. MJC spokesperson Mishka Darries says: “We can only provide the community with proper statistics after the meeting scheduled with the health department [today]. However, we can assure the public that we are monitoring the situation and Muslim autopsies are being completed as soon as possible. However, it is still not within the 24-hour period that we would like,” she says.

Truck hits three taxis in Grassy Park Residents of Grassy Park were left in shock after a construction truck crashed into three taxis, injuring nine people, on Monday afternoon last week. The cause of the collision in 5th Avenue is unknown. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says ER24 paramedics, along with Life Healthcare and Metro Services, found the truck in the middle of the road while the three taxis were on the side of the road. The passengers had already climbed out of the vehicles and were walking around on the scene. He says paramedics assessed the passengers and found that all nine had injuries, ranging from minor to moderate. Fortunately, no serious injuries were found. The patients were treated and transported to nearby provincial hospitals for further care.

Baker not afraid of a mess NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

O

ttery East baker Ameer Cloete has been whisking up some magic on the set of the third series of The Great South African Bake Off. Cloete decided to enter the competition to challenge his skills in the kitchen, but was surprised to hear he was a contestant. “I enjoy baking and it was something new to challenge myself with. I had no idea I’d actually make it onto the show when I filled in the application form,” he says. Cloete, who is currently studying towards a degree in education, says he has always “been into experimenting with food and cooking”. “I think it’s the fact that it can go so wrong that makes getting it right such a good feeling,” he says. The 25-year-old says he loves trying new things in the kitchen and always wants to learn more – and he’s not afraid to make a mess. Although he doesn’t have a signature dish, Cloete claims he can make a good chocolate cake and loves working with butter and eggs. “Without eggs cake would be very different!” The TV reality competition sees contestants spending nine weeks whisking, rolling and piping. However, only one can emerge victorious. The competition will provide plenty of inspiration and fun as the amateurs go all out to impress the judges – cookbook au-

thor and TV personality Zola Nene and private chef Tjaart Walraven. Cloete says his best experience on the show has to be the new friends he’ll leave with. “[My highlight would be] all the people

whom I met and had an opportunity to learn from. I think we all share a bond because of being in that same boat for that time,” he says. V The Great South African Bake Off airs tonight at 20:00 on BBC Lifestyle (DStv channel 174).

Transplant numbers drop Fifty years ago, a Cape Town doctor held the heart that would change modern medicine. Next month will mark the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant, performed by Prof Christiaan Barnard at Groote Schuur Hospital on 3 December 1967. But today, doctors face an alarming shortage of a key ingredient in these surgeries – hearts donated by organ donors. While South Africa boasts world-class heart surgeons and facilities, these operations are taking place less frequently in South Africa. Heart transplants in South Africa have almost halved over the last 17 years. The drop in heart transplants equates to much less growth than other emerging countries. In comparison, Brazil (which faces similar socioeconomic and political challenges to South Africa) experienced a tripling of the number of heart transplants performed since 2000, the Organ Donor Foundation explains in a statement. The drop has been attributed to one simple factor: Too few South Africans are willing to give consent to donate their own or a loved one’s organs. According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in 10 people suffer from chronic kidney disease and 10 000 South African men and women, young and old, will die of kidney disease or kidney failure every year. Last year, surveys by the foundation showed that more than 70% of the South Africans interviewed would accept an organ if they needed it. However, three-quarters of the same people said they were not prepared to donate their organs. The foundation is calling on all South Africans to register as organ donors ahead of the 50th anniversary next month. “Your heart, liver and pancreas can save three lives and your kidneys and lungs can help up to four people. You can save seven lives. You can help up to 50 people by donating your corneas, skin, bone and heart valves. Often family members will donate one of their kidneys to a relative in need. The foundation believes organ donors give people who have suffered a long-term illness hope for a healthy and dramatically improved quality of life. By registering to become an organ donor, you could give an only living parent another chance to look after their children, give a future to a child and added years with family to a sister or brother.” V For more information visit www.odf.org.za or call 0800 22 66 11 to register as a donor.

The talented musician walked away with the Best Male Artist Award at the Victory Gospel Music Awards last year. He has hosted and organised a number of shows in Hanover Park, as well as the Hanover Park Jazz Festival. He has also produced a local version of Hanover Park’s Got Talent, and has sold more than 10 000 copies of his first album and DVD. The 33-year-old is set to pay tribute and celebrate the country’s legends of the jazz industry during his five-week run, which includes Robbie Jansen, Abdullah Ibrahim, Basil Coetzee and Zayn Adam. “Cape jazz has a unique sound which can only be heard in Cape Town and is best played by musicians from the city. It is a festive Hanover Parkborn jazz musician Jonathan Rubain.

Powerful story of simplicity Amee Lekas’s Die dans van die watermeid (“The dance of the water maiden”), which was chosen for development at Kunste Onbeperk’s inaugural Teksmark (script market) initiative in Cape Town last year is on at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio. It will continue until Saturday 25 November at 20:15 or 20:30. Lekas’s debut script was selected out of 14 entries at a presentation of short extracts by the Nasionale Afrikaanse Teater-inisiatief (NATi) and the Baxter Theatre Centre. It was lifted from the page and brought to the stage as a full-scale production, directed by Jason Jacobs with a stellar cast. Rehane Abrahams (Womb of fire, The real people) leads the ensemble alongside Abduragman Adams (Suidooster, Noem my Skollie), Elton Landrew (Kat and the Kings, Boesman en Lena), Ephraim Gordon (Die laaste karretjiegraf, Blood brothers), Gretchen Ramsden (Portret, Agamemnon) and Celeste Matthews-Wannenburgh (Suip!, District Six: The musical). Cornelia Faasen, executive director of NATi, says Lekas has a unique voice. “Talking and listening to her gave me the sense of an artist who is equally blessed with a beautiful innocence and the wisdom and language ability of someone who is a thousand years old, such is her impact as a young writer. It felt as if the work called out to be staged, to be performed and to give a voice

to many of the voiceless in our communities,” she says. Die dans van die watermeid is a heartbreaking story set against the backdrop of Willowmore in the Klein Karoo where Lekas grew up. It offers a unique look at the people from the region in a script that is powerful, without undermining the inherent simplicity. The story revolves around how they hold on to their superstitions in spite of the influence of the church. It also addresses social issues, such as today’s young people who struggle without the prospect of a job or a better life, while these communities sweep things under the carpet. And all this, right under the nose of the church. Meanwhile, the rhythm of the water nymph’s dance reverberates with the promise of deliverance when the rain comes. Lekas (26), a Stellenbosch University Drama graduate, completed the text under the mentorship of playwright Saartjie Botha. Lekas says: “Through the grace of telling the story of Die dans van die watermeid I had the opportunity to create something from my own distress in the hope that people will become aware of the pain of those around them.” VTickets cost R120 each through Computicket. Comedian returns to town from US TV debut Two-time Emmy-nominated and Comics’ Choice Award winner Loyiso Gola is one of South Africa’s most loved comedians. Capetonians will get to experience him in person next month. Returning to his home town with his brand-new show, Unlearning, Cape Town-born Gola challenges societal norms in his latest comedy offering on stage at the Baxter Theatre on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 December. In this show Gola will allow audiences to question everything they thought they knew about politics, race, history and more – all delivered with his signature satirical wit. Gola has just returned from making his TV debut in the United States on the late night TV show 50 Central, a show produced by rapper and actor 50 Cent. He says he is looking forward to dazzling the Cape Town audience. “It’s a very introspective show that deals with a lot of issues. It’s very personal, which means I draw a lot from my personal life,”

he says. The Gugulethu-born host, coproducer and writer of Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola is no stranger to making audiences laugh on TV and on stage. Gola, who performed Unlearning at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival earlier this year, says he is currently going through “a process of personal unlearning”, which he gets to share with the audience. “I talk about unlearning sexism, masculinity and how I view myself as a black person.” Gola, who heads to Durban in mid-December with the show after its run in the Mother City, admits that his Cape Town audiences are always a thrill to entertain on stage. “I enjoy performing in Cape Town because I know the city so well. I dig the city’s culture and vibe – from a steak gatsby to the taxis.” V Tickets cost R150 each from Computick et at either www.computicket.com or Checkers and Shoprite stores. AMBULANCE ATTACKS

Paramedics to ‘extract’ sick NOMZAMO YUKU AND OCIANO MARASHA @NomzamoYuku

A

plan to improve the safety of those who come to the rescue of residents was announced at the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) base in Pinelands on Friday. Provincial health minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo described the safety plan following the death of an eight-year-old boy after another attack on an ambulance on Wednesday morning. The injured boy’s ambulance was robbed at gunpoint en route to hospital on the N2 near Borcherds Quarry. The boy died later at the hospital. Paramedics Sithembiso Solomon and Chantal Beesley say they are still shocked and are having nightmares about the ordeal. Beesley says they are glad the authorities have prioritised their safety before something even more tragic happens to other emergency services workers. She says it is becoming common to have EMS paramedics attacked while helping patients. Mbombo said on Friday the issue of the emergency workers’ safety could not be dealt with by only the health department, but needed collaborative intervention by all stakeholders. She said while it was clear that paramedics’ lives were at risk they could not turn a blind eye to the fact that residents were also affected. She said working with the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement and police could guarantee a safer environment. “The safety of our health professionals requires a whole-of-society approach to end this scourge and to continue delivering quality healthcare to those who need it most,” she said. The plan includes increasing police visi-

bility in hotspots and improving their availability when paramedics have to go to patients. Paramedics will now be required to use a “pick-and-drop strategy” and not first stabilise patients in their homes or at the pickup spots. They will stabilise patients during transportation inside the ambulance. The department of safety and Law Enforcement will increase cameras in hotspots and on major routes, namely the N1, N2 and N7. All EMS vehicles will get a 24-hour working panic button linked to other safety stakeholders to make sure prompt response is provided. JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social development, said the City would prioritise the linkup of EMS vehicles to the City’s emergency response to make sure they received fast response if they were attacked or needed help. He said the City had faith in the success of CCTV cameras, so they would be working closely with Law Enforcement to install them in the identified areas. Robbie Roberts, the City’s director of Law Enforcement, said they were prepared to work harder to enforce security systems in public spaces and help government to enforce safety measures and track down criminals and suspicious people through the use of technology and the City’s manpower. Gideon Morris, head of the provincial community safety department, also gave the assurance that his department supported the collaboration. He said they planned to increase the visibility of law enforcers and create a working relationship with the health department by helping paramedics in attending to emergencies and providing backup where needed.

Our elders enjoy trip to Cape Point

Finalists of the People’s Post Spec-Savers Community Champions Elders Awards, with their families and friends, enjoyed a trip to Cape Point on Friday organised by the South African Society of Hope and sponsored by Sanparks.

THANK YOU MAMA BARRACK FOR THE WONDERS 081 075 4971

My name is Nombulelo from Tyger Valley my number is 0719 732 622. A while ago i was depressed and stuck not knowing what to do, all the money I made was going through my hands. Money is not my problem any more since mama Barrack blessed me with a lot of money in my account, because I have been robbed many times by fake doctors who demanded money with no help when I first saw the testimony about mama Barrack I never believed until I tried to call her. She explained about her services and how people get rich through shortboys, magic wallet, magic ring, money in the house, money in the account and more. I was interested in getting money in my account since I was far from her. She asked me to provide her with my account and names and R 850. within 20minutes R 450,000 notified in my account. Then I went to the bank even though I was scared but there were no questions. My mother also tried money in the house and she was also shocked to see the bag full of money. Thank you mama Barrack for saving my life. Call mama barrack on 081 075 4971 .

My name is Miriam 45 years testify about the miracles that Prof Danish performed in my life. I am one of the people who lost a lot of money to the so called doctors but when I read the testimony Hilda wrote about Prof Danish, I decided to try again and called Prof Danish and he told me all will be fine with me if only I believe in him. My life was a mess, I had big debts, working for 5 years with no money, that time my boyfriend had left me, he used a crystal ball eye and gave me a magic ring which helped me. My boyfriend came back and I am now financially stable. My court cases were dismissed and I live happily now.

ore than 27 000 people descended on Killarney this weekend to witness the local leg of the World Rallycross (RX) championships. The world’s best RX drivers entertained Capetonians with fastpaced action and highly skilled handling of their supercars at the last stop on the World RX championship season this year. Despite receiving overwhelming support for their World RX debut season, home favourites Mark Cronje and Ashley Haigh-Smith could not reach the semi-finals. World champion Johan Kristoffersson from Sweden walked away with top weekend honours. “It’s fantastic to wrap up the teams and drivers’ championship and to also take the win at the final round of the season,” says Kristoffersson who won seven of the 12 events this season. “I think we’ve won over a lot of new support during our time in South Africa and the crowd really helped make this weekend a memorable event,” says Paul Bellamy,

SEAN CAMPBELL The unbeaten Milnerton Mavericks recorded their fifth consecutive win of the season in a comefrom-behind victory of 9-7 against Battswood on Saturday. The lead changed hands four times before Mavericks recorded three runs in the eight inning to secure the win, handing Battswood their first defeat of the season. Ottery Thistles won 16-7 against neighbours Devonshire Rovers in Ottery. Some disappointing pitching by three Rovers pitchers gave Thistle 17 walks, which made their task much more difficult. They

Battswood fall prey to Milnerton struck out six Thistle batters. Thistle used four pitchers to restrict Rovers to six hits while they struck out three batters. In the major league, Grassy Park Crusaders came unstuck, losing 11-2 to Bellville Tygers after taking a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning. Tygers scored ten runs in three innings, which really put a damper on the Crusaders’ performance. Crusaders rue sending starting pitcher Lucian Swartz back to the mound at the start of the sixth inning.

Relief pitcher Jarrod Williams didn’t offer much resistance and was replaced by Grant Robertson in the ninth to shut it down. Maitland Giants took full advantage of their home ground by scoring four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to beat Westridge Yankees 8-1 in Kensington. Yankees unexpectedly started their pitching with Kyle Ripepi and it backfired. Jaz Shergill restricted the unpredictable Yankees hitters in his five-innings stint. The highlight of the game was

Kyle Inglis’s homerun in the fifth inning. Athlone A’s came from a 5-1 deficit to steal victory from Van der Stel in Parktown. Cameron Fortuin hit the winning run with two down at the bottom of the ninth inning. The top hitters were Jason Carelse (3/5) for A’s and Charles van Wyk (4/5) for Van der Stel. Both teams recorded eight hits and left 11 runners on base. VOB Macaws beat Durbanville Villans 16-6 in eight innings. Mark Quickfall was VOB’s top

Volkswagen Sweden, has worked and played so hard – this weekend and this year is because of them and I can’t thank them all enough,” adds Solberg. In the final event for the Hoonigan Racing Division, crowd favourite Ken Block showed promising pace on the opening day which allowed him to lead the event overnight. He finished second in the first semi-final on Sunday, but was later disqualified after his car was found to be underweight. Nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb retired on the final lap of the second semi-final, but he rounds off the season fourth in the overall standings – 13 points ahead of his teammate Timmy Hansen who ends the year in fifth place. Organisers announced that the RX event will take place for the next four years, with tickets for next year’s event are already on sale. “This weekend was just the start of what I hope is a long and fruitful relationship for World RX in South Africa. We finished the season on a high,” says Bellamy.

Glynis Koopman (2-3) and Charmelle Witbooi (2-2) both hit triples off pitcher Chesternay Fortune, who gave up a total of four hits. Kenfac Phillies got a staggering thirteen hits off Falcons pitcher Nicolene Jones to record an unexpected 12-0 victory in Pinelands. Phillies’ batting prowess was clear with eight batters getting hits. Leading the onslaught were Carla Swanepoel, Chelsea Cohen and Faith Beukes, all batting 2-3. Cohen also performed admirably on the pitching rubber, striking out six and giving up only two scattered singles from the fourteen batters she faced. Cohen will be tested this coming week when she faces the big hitting champions, Glenthorn A’s, at Turfhall. Tantasport kept their sights on a good finish this season with another convincing victory against VOB (11-4). Nawaal Nacerodien (3-3, including a triple) Roxanne Albertyn (2-3) and Danielle Pienaar (2-3, including two triples) were the pick of the Tanta batters. Albertyn and Shanine Groepies shared the pitching duties for Tanta and gave up a total of six hits. Megan Fillmore was on the rubber for VOB, surrendering 10 hits. Normies continued their quest to return to the super league by maintaining their un-
