While IUP is trying to combat this issue for itself, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is attempting to deal with this issue across

the state system.

Students concerned about Pennsylvania voting laws Two-party system pushes young voters away TANNER SCHELL Staff Writer dsqcc@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

(Twitter/IUP) IUP has been hosting voter information sessions on campus this semester in hopes of getting students to register to vote before today’s election and to raise awareness about the importance of voting. Students who are voting today can do so at Zink Hall on campus from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Voting is viewed by many people as one of the most important things a person can do in the democratic republic.

For young people, it is often viewed as especially important to vote as the average representative is in their sixties and may not reflect the ideals of the younger generation.

Voting allows for one’s voice to be heard and allows for the continuation of democracy in our nation.

“I am not registered to vote because of the fact that independents can't vote except in the main presidential election,” Hayden Williams (freshman, finance) said.

In Pennsylvania, registration requires identification as a Democrat or Republican in order to vote in primaries, and this practice is known as a closed primary policy.

Voting is still allowed in non-primary elections when citizens are not registered as one of the two main political parties.

“Pennsylvania really allows for voter suppression, and it is very sad,” Williams said.

Many people throughout the years have voiced complaints about Pennsylvania’s voting rules.

“How am I supposed to voice my opinion when I have to conform to the two parties,” she said.

As third parties increase in power, many wonder if Pennsylvania will change its voting rules.

“I will not vote until we are an open primary state,” Williams said.

Another student shared similar concerns.

“It isn't very democratic to allow voter suppression,” Jake Brown (sophomore, political science) said. “How can a system which calls itself the ‘beacon of democracy’ allow for such things?”

While the system may be viewed as flawed by some, one of the ways to change this structure is through voting. If one does not vote, then one is not using their vote to attempt to see the changes that they hope for.

“Not allowing Independents to vote should be considered unconstitutional,” Williams said.

“It doesn't feel right to have to decide to vote or not vote,” Brown said, Pennsylvania is one of few states remaining that has a closed primary policy.

While it is too late to register for this year’s elections if you are not registered to vote, registering early for future elections is always an option. Registering to vote takes as little as five minutes and allows the opportunity to have a decision in those that represent the country in the future.

“I would vote if the state was an open primary state and I could vote independent of parties,” Williams said.

The last day to register was Oct. 18 before today’s election. To vote in Pennsylvania, one must first register to vote at least 15 days before the election.

“It concerns me how a democratic system is supposed to maintain itself if it does not allow the people to vote the way that they want,” Brown said.

Other students seemed less concerned with the system of voting. For these students, not voting had to do with the issue of time.

“I do not plan to vote, but that is mainly because I have not had time to research the candidates for [the] local election adequately,” Nick McShea (senior, nursing) said.

“I don’t feel comfortable voting if I do not know what a candidate stands for.”

Some are not registered to vote in Indiana and are instead registered to vote in their hometown.

“I don’t really have time to drive an hour back home just to participate in an election that I don’t feel will really affect me,” Mason Racicot (junior, history education) said.

“I have never understood why voting is not done on the weekends so that more people have an opportunity to participate.”

For students who do plan to vote, it will take place in Zink Hall from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.

IUP SAHE holds recruitment fair Program offers students careers in higher education KAYLEE KASSA Contributing Writer bvmy@iup.edu @ThePennIUP IUP’s Students Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) program hosted a recruitment fair for prospective students in conjunction with its annual Practicum Fair for current students on Friday.

The purpose of the information session was to educate prospective students on what a master’s degree in student affairs in higher education entails.

Dr. John Mueller, SAHE department chairperson and graduate coordinator, explained that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lack of knowledge of student affairs, the program is lacking in numbers. In addition, in-person events are hit-or-miss right now coming out of a year of Zoom events and classes so, as a result, more engagement seems to be taking place online still.

IUP’s SAHE program is a twoyear long cohort model.

said that the cohort aspect of the program is one of her favorite things about it.

Cohort programs are increasing in popularity, especially among graduate programs. They are known to foster a supportive environment because each member of the program works through the entire course of study together.

They take the same classes, have the same career goals and deal with the same stressors within the program.

There are approximately 180 SAHE programs in the United States like IUP’s. Mueller is hopeful that the numbers will go up within the next few years, especially because the department is focused on raising awareness for the graduate programs at IUP. “The field is going to have to look at itself and decide what to do,” Mueller said.

Dr. Mimi Benjamin, a professor in the SAHE department, views IUP’s strong alumni network as a major recruiter for the department.

“No one comes in wanting a career in higher education,” Benjamin said.

While this is mainly due to the

lack of knowledge that such programs exist in higher education, there are still ways for students to get involved. For example, Mueller said that students who held leadership positions in their undergrad, such as resident assistants and orientation leaders, would most likely show interest in the program.

Benjamin said that they encourage students in the program to get a wide variety of experiences. These experiences pave the way for networking opportunities, interactions with alum and, ultimately, job opportunities.

By organizing the annual Practicum Fair for current students, Benjamin can ensure that they are exposed to a variety of options and opportunities in the world of higher education leadership.

Jesse Brown (graduate student, student affairs in higher education) found his way into the program after having a “fallout” in his undergraduate major of history. He currently works on academic assistance in the athletic department at IUP. “I like getting to know people from other universities and the variety of work offered,” Brown said.

His career goal is to work in the financial office at a university.

Because the goal of obtaining a master’s degree in SAHE is to eventually work for a university, many students have found jobs or internships in related fields.

The program has been available at IUP since 1971, marking this as its 50th year. Mueller said the department is actively planning a 50th anniversary celebration for next year because COVID-19 put

a pause on planning the event for this year. There are currently 35 students in the program and over 1,000 alumni of the program.

IUP SAHE is holding an informational zoom session on Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. It will discuss the program’s curriculum, cohort model, admissions process and what the program has to offer. A faculty and student panel will also be available to answer questions.

How did Halloween come to be?

“Halloween has always seemed like an odd holiday, and I’ve always wondered how it came to be,” Liam Gaynor (senior, management information systems) said.

Another Halloween holiday has come and gone. While we celebrate the holiday each year, many people are unfamiliar with the origins of Halloween. Why do we wear costumes? Why do people give out candy?

The historical origins of Halloween date back to the Celtic festival of Samhain.

The Celtic people, who lived in parts of modern-day Ireland, United Kingdom and northern France, held their New Years celebration on Nov. 1.

According to https://www. history.com/topics/halloween/ history-of-halloween, “This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of

the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.

“Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of Oct. 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.”

The presence of these spirits, the Celts believed, made it easier for Celtic priests to predict the future.

Also according to https://www. history.com/topics/halloween/history-of-halloween, “During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes.”

Later, the Celtic traditions of old mixed with the growing Catholic traditions like All Hallows’ Day in the region.

In what many view as an attempt to replace the celebration of Samhain with a religious holiday, Pope Boniface IV changed the

observance of All Hallows’ Day to Nov. 1.

All Hallows’ Day is also where Halloween gets its name.

Halloween celebrations in the early history of America were very limited.

The occasion did not really take hold until the second half of the 19th century when America saw a wave of new immigrants enter the country.

began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today’s ‘trickor-treat’ tradition. Young women believed that on Halloween they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn, apple parings or mirrors.”

By the 1920s, the holiday had become a widely celebrated one in the United States. There was a problem, though.

Vandalism had begun to become an issue during many community celebrations during that time.

Town leaders scrambled to combat this issue, and, by the 1950s, the issue had largely been dealt with.

By this time, Halloween was a holiday directed mostly at younger groups of people.

The tradition of trick-or-treating also took hold during this time.

1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived. Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats.

“Thus, a new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow.”

Today, people in the United States spend about $6 billion each year on Halloween, making it the second largest commercial holiday behind only Christmas.

In fact, about a quarter of all candy sales in the United States are attributed to the holiday.

Halloween-themed and horror movies are another big driver of the holiday’s popularity. Horror is one of the fastest growing genres in the film industry today.

My name is Caio and I am a political science major covering D.C. politics.

The U.S. military jury has officially addressed and condemned the torture practiced by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) while investigating the Sept. 11 attacks.

The handwritten letter was signed by seven senior military officers who heard the graphic descriptions of the treatment posed by the agency towards a suspect of terrorism during the hearing of

Majid Khan, a Pakistani-American who joined al-Qaida after graduating high school.

All but one of the jurors who were at the hearing agreed that such treatment was a “stain on the moral fiber of America.”

The hearing took place in Guantanamo Bay, an American military base in Cuba where Khan was placed in custody.

That made him the only U.S. resident to be placed in that prison. His hearing also marked the first time a detainee described torture by the CIA in public.

Khan described the horror movie-like conditions, detailing

moments in which he was forced to be humiliated while naked, being chained in ways that made falling asleep impossible and intentionally drowned until near unconsciousness at two sites. As claimed by Khan, he cooperated in the hopes of being transferred to a regular custody where he would not be tortured, but that did not happen.

“The more I cooperated, the more I was tortured,” Khan said to the jury during his testimony.

His claims were backed by Michael Lyness, a major in the U.S. military who was acting as Khan’s lawyer. As stated by Lyness,

Khan was “raped at the hands of the U.S. government.”

Khan’s hearing has sparked discussion among many Americans from both ends: civilians and military personnel.

On one hand, many believe that it is not right to behave as though Khan was innocent since he pleaded guilty to terrorism and joined the al-Qaida.

One of these people is Col. Walter Foster IV from the U.S. Army. He led Khan’s prosecution and reminded the panel of the people who died indirectly because of Khan’s work with the al-Qaida. “[While Khan] got extremely rough treatment in CIA custody, he is still alive,” Foster IV said. “[That] is a luxury that victims did not have.”

Others believe that torturing someone goes against the basic principles that the United States stands for. These people are backed by the Eighth Amend-

ment of the U.S. Constitution that prohibits “cruel and unusual punishments” by the hands of the U.S. government.

According to the letter published by the jurors, the Eighth Amendment was not the only constitutional right breeched by the CIA. “Mr. Khan has been held without the basic due process under the U.S. Constitution,” the letter said. “Specifically, he was held without charge or legal representation for nine years until 2012 and held without final sentencing until October 2021.”

Ultimately, the jury has sentenced Khan to 26 years in prison, starting from his guilty plea in 2012. The sentence, however, was purely symbolic as the Pentagon and Khan’s lawyers reached a deal in which his sentence could end as early as next February and no later than 2025. This is because Khan has been considered a “government cooperator.”

IUP shows ‘Shutter Island’

(Madison Shields/The Penn) On Thursday, IUP held a movie showing and pizza night for students in the Great Room in Elkin Hall. The movie that was shown was 2010’s “Shutter Island.” It features actors Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio and is based off of Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel which bears the same name. The movie grossed nearly $300 million at the box office and received generally positive reviews from critics. It follows a pair of U.S. Marshals who are investigating the disappearance of a prisoner at a hospital for the criminally insane located in a place called Shutter Island. Students who attended the events were treated to pizza, drinks and cookies to eat as they watched the movie. IUP frequently shows movies which students can attend at no cost to them.

IUP Department of Safety Sciences helps protect workers

By IUP News Information The IUP Department of Safety Sciences administers the Pennsylvania Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Consultation program. It is staffed by 11 IUP Safety Sciences faculty members, all 100 percent board certified in occupational safety or industrial hygiene.

By federal law, each state must have an OSHA Consultation Program to help businesses comply with OSHA’s standards. The OSHA Consultation Program is not about enforcement, but about helping businesses and their workers, John Mulroy, director of the Pennsylvania OSHA Consultation program, said. He noted that employers who worked with Pennsylvania OSHA Consultation often remark the project “is Pennsylvania’s best kept secret.”

“Employers we work with often comment that the Consultation Project is ‘Pennsylvania’s best kept secret,’” Mulroy said. “We’re not trying to keep our free OSHA compliance assistance a secret. In fact, we work every day to spread the word that no-cost help with the OSHA standards is just a phone call or a visit to IUP.edu away. Based on the volume of calls we are getting, we think businesses are getting the message,” he said.

According to statistics from OSHA at the federal level, nearly one million Pennsylvania workers have been removed from unsafe work hazards in the last six years as a result of work by the Pennsylvania OSHA Consultation Program. By avoiding injuries and illnesses as a result of corrected hazards, Pennsylvania private businesses saved more than $39 million in both direct and indirect costs in just one year.

Funding for the program and salaries for the faculty members are entirely supported by the federal grant and matching state funds, and businesses are never charged for compliance assistance consultation services. Businesses must voluntarily request consultation services. They are not required by federal OSHA standards to participate in consultation services, and unlike enforcement, employers maintain control over the scope of the consultation visit throughout the hazard assessment, Mulroy said.

“One of the bigger benefits to employers is consultation faculty are not enforcement officers; therefore, they do not issue citations or penalties, and consultation findings are kept 100 percent confidential,” Mulroy said. “This means federal law prohibits the findings of all

onsite visits from being shared with anyone outside the program, including OSHA enforcement.”

The only situation in which OSHA enforcement is advised of consultation findings—and this is extremely rare—is if an employer refuses to correct an identified serious hazard.

In a situation like that, enforcement must be notified to ensure the protection of the workers facing that identified serious hazard. In Pennsylvania, this is so rare that referral to enforcement for a business owner refusing to correct a serious hazard has happened only twice during the last 10,000 visits, Mulroy said.

“Protecting workers makes business sense, helps create a strong culture, and provides workers a voice so they feel heard,” Gregory Tate, OSHA Safety and Occupational Health specialist from Region III, director of Cooperative and State Programs, said.

“Pennsylvania’s small businesses have one of the best resources available to them at no cost. All of the consultants within the Pennsylvania OSHA Consultation program at IUP are certified safety and health professionals at the highest standards and are at the top tier of their profession,” he said. “Their specialized services, which normally could cost employers thousands of dollars per visit, are free to small businesses and help address problems before employees are hurt or even killed. Their efforts have and will continue to save lives and keep businesses operating. All state consultants can help businesses implement safety and health programs, which can lead to OSHA recognition and exemptions from OSHA’s programmed inspections,” Tate said.

“The Pennsylvania OSHA Consultation Program exemplifies the best attributes of a consultation program and supports the most employer sites in Region III within OSHA’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program,” Tate said. “I would encourage all small business owners, including those in Pennsylvania, to get started in moving their business to the next level and request a visit from their state consultation program today.”

IUP’s program annually averages visits to nearly 600 small businesses of all types and sizes, including manufacturing, commercial and residential construction, oil and gas extraction, telecommunications, lumber mills, doctor and dentist offices, laboratories, and shipbuilding on Lake Erie. Since 1983, Pennsylvania OSHA consultants have conducted more than 32,000 visits to small- and mid-sized high-hazard

Pennsylvania companies.

Pennsylvania is ranked sixth in the nation for the number of small businesses by the United States Small Business Administration, with 1.1 million small businesses, accounting for 99.6 percent of all Pennsylvania businesses. Small businesses in Pennsylvania employ approximately 2.5 million workers, or 46.2 percent of all workers in the state.

We also appreciate all of the benefits and value it brings to our university, to our department, and to our students.”

Since the 2007–08 fiscal year, IUP has received more than $25.6 million for the project (ranging from $1.5 million in 2008–09 to $1.95 million in 2019–20 and 2020–21). The Pennsylvania OSHA Consultation Project has been the largest recurring grant program at IUP since the 2007–08 fiscal year.

“IUP’s Safety Sciences Department is nationally known for educating safety professionals who excel in industries such as chemicals, construction, steel, consulting, insurance, and manufacturing,” Mulroy said. “Hosting a consultation program through the Department of Safety Sciences—and being at a university—is a great fit,” he said. Pennsylvania’s OSHA Consultation Program is one of only 12 university-based programs in the nation.

“The on-site experiences in the diverse worksites that we serve keep the faculty in the program current in the field, and consultant faculty who instruct in safety sciences bring this knowledge and experiences to students in the classroom,” Mulroy said.

Supply chain issues discussed at G20, being felt globally There are some things nobody thinks about until they stop working.

The prime example of that is the crucial role that supply chains have in supporting people across the country and the world. As seen in the recent months, there has been a severe backup of the processes that are associated with the supply chain.

The issue has gotten so bad that at the most recent G20 summit President Joe Biden made remarks to the leaders in attendance, as well as the worldwide audience, that action must be taken to fix the issues that are present.

Now, naturally, with the COVID-19 pandemic still in full effect, there is a restriction applied to the process of supply chains as having to follow the regulations of the pandemic are crucial to keep businesses open.

Despite that, there are still many other factors that are influencing and hurting the supply chain.

To start with one of the biggest reasons, apart from the

pandemic, there is a lack of transportation methods for shipments.

Over the past year, it has been seen that the sheer number of ports and docks cannot support the amount of ships entering.

This led to several cases, namely at ports in California, where a lot of ships had to drop anchor in the ocean and wait for their opportunity to get to the port and unload the goods they had.

In addition to the issues with the ports, harsher regulations and restrictions on truck drivers as well as a general shortage of drivers being available, this meant that there were fewer loads able to be taken, adding to the long delays and wait times.

Obviously, the restrictions are necessary to keep people safe and make sure everyone is still able to work as if someone contracts COVID-19 there is a large period of time they must take in order to recover.

Another issue related to shipping is that massive manufacturing areas, like China, have lost their shipping containers as they

piled up in areas like South Asia and Africa.

According to the New York Times, a shipment from Shanghai to Los Angeles cost about $2,000 prior to the pandemic. At the current time in 2021, the estimated cost is about $25,000. That massive uptick in price makes companies want to ship goods less frequently as there is a huge payout that has to be made in order to support it.

The question then becomes: How can it be fixed? While some blame the infrastructure of the world with others looking to world leaders for hope and information, it is clear that there is no simple solution to the problem.

“Ending the pandemic is the ultimate key to unlocking the disruptions we’re all contending with,” Biden said in his G20 address, “but we have to take action now, together with our partners in the private sector, to reduce the backlogs that we’re facing.”

While that may seem like a good message at first, the more

one looks at it, the vaguer it becomes. Obviously ending the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic is the best solution for the problem but, considering the issues that have persisted in the United States alone, it is unfortunately unlikely that the true end will happen anytime soon.

In addition to that, world leaders do need to buckle down and work together to try to resolve the issue. Even if the vaccine rates were better in the United States, there is still a likely possibility that the supply issues would be happening because this is not just an issue with one country, but the world as a whole.

If world leaders are able to work together to handle some of the issues that are being seen, there is a good possibility that things can start being fixed. For example, governments should start at the shipping containers that are currently stuck away from the main factories. Make preparations for the containers to be sent back to the main factories; that way the cost associated with

shipping will go back down to a normal rate.

Trying to find ways for more truck drivers to get back out is another key step. After all, it would not matter if the shipment issue is fixed if there are still no drivers to deliver the goods.

Getting more drivers out or trying to find a way around it with the drivers that are available is likely going to be the one thing holding the world back in the event that shipping issues are resolved.

Whether it is solved gradually over time or something leaders have to work at to fix, the supply chain issues are imperative to the continued well-being of many areas around the world.

So, if you have a shipment that is delayed, just remember that it is a lot worse for people in other areas of the world and be grateful for what you have access to.

(IUP/Twitter) According to pathways.org, pumpkin decorating, corn mazes, haunted houses and trick-or-treating are among the most popular activities for the Halloween time. At IUP, parties and traveling were also added to that mix as students wanted to make the most of the weekend.

The 2021 Halloween weekend is no exception to that rule. With a plethora of activities and parties on campus and in the surrounding Indiana region, there was plenty for students to do.

With many IUP students opting for dressing in costume and going out, there was a lot of parties dotted around campus, leading to a very energetic weekend on campus.

“My weekend was pretty fun overall,” Gabrielle Probst (sopho-

more, early childhood education) said. “I got dressed up and spent the weekend with some friends at a party. It was a good time.”

Probst went on to say that the weekend also allowed her time to relax after a stressful week as she had more time to hang out with friends and take the weekend to unwind and have fun.

Having a time to relax from a long week is imperative to good mental health, especially amongst college students. The worst thing a student can do is not take a chance to relax and enjoy life particularly during those stressful periods in time.

While there was a lot to do at IUP, some students took the time to leave campus and explore the different Halloween-inspired

events that were in the wider Indiana area. With various types of Halloween events across the county, there were plenty of options for students that did not want to travel too far but still wanted to explore off campus.

“I took the time to go to a corn maze that me and some friends found out about,” Matthew Levenson (sophomore, accounting) said. “We just went on a whim, but it was a pretty fun experience honestly.”

than navigating a haunted maze with some friends to celebrate Halloween.

While there was a lot of things to do on campus and in the surrounding area, other students took the opportunity to travel.

“I went to Pittsburgh over the weekend,” Sam Shelenberger (sophomore, music education) said. “I got to go down with some friends and we had a good time just exploring the city.”

In addition to students that traveled to other places to celebrate Halloween, there was another subset of students that opted to return home for the

weekend, likely wanting to have a quieter environment to take personal time away from campus life.

With so many different options, the IUP students made sure to make the most of their weekend, especially as they prepare to buckle down for the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break.

“After the weekend, I know I am going to be waiting for Thanksgiving,” Levenson said. “I just can’t wait to get a longer break from school as well as the chance to visit and spend time with my family.”

The Penn hopes that every student had a good weekend and wishes everyone the best as we all hit the next three weeks with everything we have before the break for Thanksgiving beginning on Nov. 22.

When is a good time for Christmas music?

Considering the time for the music of Halloween to be over, the transition to other holidays begins.

While most would assume that this means preparing for Thanksgiving, it has a different meaning for Christmas enthusiasts.

“I started listening to Christmas music before Halloween was even over,” Kendall Gomez (sophomore, Spanish/political science) said. “I just really like the energy that the songs give off, plus I don’t really care much for the Thanksgiving season at all, so I just look forward to Christmas instead.”

Gomez is far from the only person that has this mentality.

Not caring for Thanksgiving is one big reason that a lot of people opt to skip directly to Christmas as there is little fanfare for Thanksgiving.

Despite the fact that there is no music for the season, there are still some students that like to hold off on the Christmas music until December hits.

“I don’t personally listen to Christmas music before December,” Joseph Semetkoskey (sophomore, accounting) said.

“Generally, I don’t care if people do, but I just don’t see the point to do it before the month Christmas is in.”

Semetkoskey went on to say that he likes Christmas music because it feels at home during December, namely because songs tend to have a theme of snow and colder weather, both of which are normally associated with the 12th month.

Although there are obvious themes present in Christmas music, songs like “Run Rudolph Run” by Chuck Berry, “Last Christmas” by Wham! and “Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys still manage to get a boost in streams during the month of November The debate over whether someone can listen to Christmas music in November or not has been going on for years. In the minds of some, it is an accomplishment that Christmas music can be considered its own genre of music, therefore meaning that it can be listened to no matter what.

While that is a valid point, there are others that maintain that it is meant to be a seasonal type of music, only used to set the mood of a particular time of year: in this case, Christmas time.

“My family always waits until Thanksgiving,” Emma Naugle (freshman, early childhood education).

Naugle added that she does not think that people should listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving occurs.

Whether you agree with listening to Christmas music or not, there is nothing stopping anyone from doing it. There is merit to both sides of the argument, and at the end of the day anybody can listen to what they want.

Students share thoughts on withdrawal period LANE LANNAN Culture Editor ffpcc@iup.edu @ThePennIUP If students ever feel uneasy about class performance, there is an option for them available.

As of Monday, the withdrawal period for IUP has closed. With that in mind, there is a lot of opinions on the matter that students have.

“I think that the withdrawal period is a really good system for any college to have,” Lily Carone (sophomore, pre-medicine) said. “I mean, if a student is really struggling, having a chance to drop the class to save their GPA is really important.”

If a student is worried about the potential of failing, they could drop the class and opt to take it at a later date, especially if there is a required GPA for a major or academic group on campus like the Cook Honors College (CHC).

In addition to dropping a class, as the name suggests, there is also the possibility to add a class. Generally, this would probably be done earlier in the semester; however, students can elect to do it whenever they want as long at it is before the deadline. As is the case with the process of dropping a class, students at IUP also generally like the ability to add a class if needed.

“Let’s say that you didn’t realize you weren’t prepared for a class,” Isaac Ryer (sophomore, nursing) said. “If that happens, then you might need to leave the class to stay on track with your major’s

program and keep good grades. In that case, the ability to withdrawal from a class is really important.”

While it may seem unlikely that both a student and their advisor would miss signs of being unprepared for a class, it is possible. Mistakes can be made when it comes to registering for classes. So, if a student realizes that they need to withdraw from a class to save their GPA, the the decision is imperative.

With the official withdrawal period closed to students at the current time, most students should be happy with their standing in class.

It should be noted that if a student is not happy with their grade in a class, reaching out to the professor or visiting the tutoring center are both great ways to improve grades.

There is still a lot of classwork left, and plenty of abilities and opportunities for you to fix your standing in a class if you are not doing so well.

Remember to take your time and try not to stress too much about grades as that will likely make getting work done even harder.

Also, if there are any concerns about failing a class, try reaching out to both the professor of the course and your advisor to try to either find a way to fix the grade or set up a way to retake the class during another semester.

The Penn wishes students a good remainder of the semester.

With the withdraw period closed, it means that there is about one third of the semester left to complete.

So, good luck, and keep up the hard work.

This comes after The Penn published a story in the culture section of the newspaper under the column titled “The Crimson Hoax.” The Crimson Hoax is a satire column similar to “The Onion.”

This specific Crimson Hoax said that the rapper would be coming to IUP with Lil Yachty next semester to pursue a degree in music education.

Minaj said that while the story was humorous, “it is not okay to write stories about people without their knowledge.” Minaj also said that this story made people question her reputation; not because IUP is a bad school, but because maybe she was not doing well in her rap career and needed a new start.

“I get what the kids that wrote the story were doing,” Minaj said. “Using my name is an easy way to get attention from people. It’s like clickbait. It feels like everyone is doing it nowadays.”

In order to avoid more legal trouble, Minaj’s team has requested that The Penn issues an apology statement.

So, The Penn would like to apologize for creating a fake

Minaj was not the only one upset at the Crimson Hoax; several students who failed to realize it

was a satire article felt deeply upset upon realizing that they were sharing and celebrating something that was not true.

The “Nicki Minaj college” story got so big that even the iconic Instagram page @iupchicks joined in on the hype and joked about the story as if it were true like any Barb would do.

Although some students took the news lightheartedly as a joke, others were very critical.

“I knew that the story about Nicki Minaj was not true because

I like to read what I am sharing before posting,” River Song (sophomore, anthropology) said.

“But this guy Matt Smith was throwing a whole fit because he thought he could replace his ex-girlfriend with Nicki Minaj. he is not alone − a lot of people believed it.”

Even some non-IUP affiliated personnel, such as Isa Joek, the director of the York-Indiana-Kutztown-Erie Statistical Institute (Y.I.K.E.S. Institute), were affected. Joek claims that her job was

placed in jeopardy because she was quoted in the satirical column thinking that it was a serious news article.

“It makes me really upset that people are saying that I’m a joke,” Joek said. “Some folks are going as far as saying the institute I direct is not even real and that really saddens me because I put all my heart and soul into my job.”

The Penn would like to clear up any further confusion and say that this story is fake as well.

As the month of October came to an end, several organizations hosted Halloween-themed events to get students engaged in fun activities for the season.

On Saturday, IUP’s Student Activity Committee (STATIC) held its “Netflix and Chill” event. It took place at the Ohio Room in the Hadley Union Building (HUB). The movie chosen was “Candyman” (2021).

Besides screening a horror movie, STATIC’s Netflix and Chill event also had a lot of snacks as well as a costume contest in which students got to pick the best costume out of the competitors.

“I thought [STATIC’s events] were really fun and exciting,” Courtney Rainey (freshman, nursing) said. “There were a lot of activities for everyone to do and competitions that were entertaining to watch. Members of STATIC were super kind and encouraging and engaged with everyone.

“The atmosphere of everyone enjoying all the different activities with their friends was nice overall.”

STATIC was not the only organization to host Halloween-themed events.

On Thursday, the Latino Student Organization (LaSO) held a “scary stories night” where students shared scary stories from multiple cultures while eating chocolate or dulce de leche flavored churros and drinking hot chocolate.

Among the stories told were folk stories such as “La Llorona” as well as stories that students claimed happened to them or to people they knew.

“I brought two stories that my mother told me,” Tatiana Cleffi (sophomore, nursing) said. “One story is from Costa Rica and one that she told me it happened to her here in the United States.”

This was not the only Latino-related event happening this past weekend. Although not necessarily linked to Halloween as they are

On Monday the IUP Andale Club, a club for students interested in the Spanish language, hosted an event with Dr. Hilario Molina (sociology) in which he attempted to break down some myths and misconceptions that students might have had regarding the Day

of the Dead. In the event, he also shared how other cultures in Latin America celebrate the event.

Also on Monday, the Anthropology Club had an “ofrenda” table to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

Other cultures have been the highlight of some “spooky events” as well.

On Thursday, the History Club hosted a guest lecture on zombies presented by Dr. Scott Moore, the

head of the history department.

In the lecture, Moore analyzed the phenomena of zombie movies throughout the world. He also shared his personal favorite zombie movies including “Train to Busan” (2016), a Korean film.

Moore has pitched for a new class, HIST 240, which will focus on the history of zombies in world culture.

“I think a class focused on

the history of zombies would be interesting,” Brandon Kimmel (sophomore, English) said, “but I do wonder how would this count for credits.”

With so many fun activities happening this week, IUP students started November excited and busy. STATIC already has many things lined up for this upcoming month as well, including a virtual game show night on this upcoming Thursday.

There is a new initiative for saving the oceans.

YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, best known as “MrBeast”, has teamed up with fellow content creator Mark Rober to start a massive charity event to save the seas. Dubbed “#TeamSeas,” the goal is to remove 30 million pounds of trash from the ocean

by Jan. 1, 2022.

“It seems like such a high goal to shoot for, especially so late in the year,” Thomas Valcukas (sophomore, biology) said. “It is good to see another mega charity event like ‘#TeamTrees’, though, so I am really interested to see where this goes.”

Valcukas is referencing Mr-

Beast’s past charity event, called “#TeamTrees,” which had a goal to plant 20 million trees. After smashing that goal, the charity resulting effects continue with donations on the website still happening almost two years later.

Despite the high goal that was set with #TeamTrees, #TeamSeas is even higher.

Even if one does not factor in the uptick from 20 to 30 million, there is the additional challenge of managing trash in the ocean. After all, most of it does not sit still waiting to be picked up.

There is a lot of ways that the #TeamSeas team is working to have the cleanup happen regardless of the issues that may be present. One of the ways the team is doing this is with new technology, namely in the form of a floating robot that oversees

and controls the trash.

“Honestly, I was a little blown away when I saw the massive robot that they had,” Bridget Gardner (sophomore, environmental engineering) said. “It is just so cool to see because I

think a lot of people didn’t really know that technology was even possible, much less that it is used on a wide scale.”

The trash-eating robots that are being implemented are used by the non-profit organization the Ocean Cleanup, which aims to collect trash at the source of the issue as well as hitting the oceans themselves to clean what they can reach.

Even with the technology and amount of volunteers that will be working, this process will take time. After all, they are working to clean something that is constantly getting dirtier by human impact.

According to the Center for Biological Diversity, https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/ ocean_plastics/, plastic makes up about 40 percent of the ocean surfaces. While that number is

just the trash on the surface of the ocean, there are still countless amounts of trash that sink into the depths that people may not know about.

Regardless of the issues and challenges that are present, #TeamSeas has a goal in mind and the team will do its absolute best to hit it. With the charity being promoted by fellow content creators, as well as companies like G Fuel which introduced a custom-made and limited-edition flavor and cup for the charity, it is unlikely that it will fail.

This is a great charity to support a commendable cause. So, donate if you can. The only ones that can save the oceans are us, so we have got to act while we can.

“We played with a lot of grit.”

This statement comes off a 1-0 win over No. 6 Kutztown in a game that is best described as being “gritty”.

The Hawks were in a mustwin situation going up against a divisional opponent fighting for the fifth seed in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs.

This game was fought hard by both teams. Neither team was able to score until the final quarter where Claire Murphy (sophomore, math education) deflected a shot for the game-clenching goal.

This game was an impressive performance by the Hawks in many regards. Especially when you take a dive into the stat sheet for IUP, you see how tough the team had to play against the Golden Bears.

Kutztown was able to get off 14 shots, and IUP was able to keep any of them from getting in goal.

The Hawks were only able to take three shots and converted on one of them to take the game and playoff rights.

Amanda Zaner (junior, political science/international studies) was a major factor in the game putting up seven saves and tallying her fourth shutout of the season.

“We wanted it more,” Agard said.

This is the main reason the Hawks were able to come away with a crucial victory on Saturday.

With the playoffs now clinched, the Crimson Hawks will have little time for reprieve as they will travel to Millersville tonight and take on the fourth-seed Marauders.

This is the ninth time that the field hockey program has made the PSAC tournament. It is the fifth time this squad has made the playoffs under the guidance of Agard, and the first time since 2016.

Even though none of the players on this squad have experience

playing in the postseason, Agard is confident that his squad will be prepared to take on the pressure of the postseason.

“We have been exposed to all these teams already,” Agard said.

“They already know the quality of teams that they are going to have to face.”

Agard’s assessment is on point as the Hawks have already played Millersville this season and know how to play against this opponent.

The last time these two squads met up was on Sept. 25 where the Marauders came away with a 2-0 victory over the Crimson Hawks, handing them their first loss of the season.

This is not the same IUP team that Millersville faced a little over a month ago. Time has passed and the Hawks have had to overcome adversity and face tough opponents.

Even though playoffs have been clinched, and the Hawks accomplished their goal set at the beginning of the year to make the playoffs, they are not satisfied yet.

“We need to go further,” Agard said. “We have a good team and we are geling. We understand what it takes to be winners.”

(IUP Athletics) Saturday’s game against Kutztown will likely be the last game that the field hockey seniors will play at home. The seniors celebrated their Senior Day on Oct. 24.

Crimson Hawks dominate on Senior Night

IUP volleyball takes down Mercyhurst and Edinboro over weekend JAY McGARY Staff Writer fwzt@iup.edu @ThePennIUP IUP kept its playoff hopes alive this weekend with two very impressive upset wins against the likes of a Mercyhurst team coming in on a six-game win streak and the best team in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West, Edinboro.

Both games were won in four sets: the Mercyhurst game was won by scores of 25-13, 29-27, 17-25 and 25-20, and the Edinboro game ended with scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 and 26-24.

Both games were played in

the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex (KCAC), and both games featured eight service aces from the Crimson Hawks team. Though these two things may seem unrelated, the tangible impact of home court advantage is certainly understood by head coach Julie Torbett.

“Serving and passing is a huge key to success on the volleyball court at any level. We did a great job with that over the weekend,” Torbett said. “I think the KCAC helps us out in that category as well since we get to practice in the arena and both Mercyhurst and Edinboro have much smaller venues that they play in.

“The depth perception is [affected] by the arena and can cause

some serving and passing errors that are not typical of the visiting team.”

Whether the now 18-4 Fighting Scots were playing atypical volleyball is up for debate, but what is obviously apparent through watching the team play on Saturday afternoon is just how close these players are, and how much they appreciate the four seniors that were honored before the game.

Bailey Flowerdew (sophomore, psychology) had 16 digs, Leah Henderson (junior, sports administration) added 37 assists and Brooke Little (junior, sports administration) rounded out the excellent play of the underclassmen during senior night with 12 kills.

Nights are an opportunity for veteran players to reminisce on their favorite volleyball memories.

It is a beautiful rarity for a lasting, impactful memory to be created on such nights. The underclassmen, previously listed, helped lift the senior Hawks to a victory, and it is a night they will surely remember.

“I told both Leah and Bailey right before the game to keep the seniors on the court as long as possible,” Torbett said.

“I think this team is especially close off the court so there was an extra motivation to win for the seniors, and the seniors played exceptionally well.

“To have all four of them on the court at the same time and play the entire first set and beat the number one team in that set was some-

thing they will remember forever.”

Though the seniors were celebrated, their final season is far from over with the upset victories accrued Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

This week the team travels to Salem to play its final non-conference game against a team that was easily handled earlier in the season.

In that game, which IUP swept 3-0, the third set was mostly comprised of underclassmen getting experience while the starters got some rest. Hopefully, this second meeting will result in the same.

“I like to play a non-conference game late in the season as a way to give the players who don’t play as much a chance to get out on the court and show what they can do,” Torbett said. “We also have to prepare for every team the same and not take anyone lightly or overlook anyone.”

IUP heads to West Virginia to take on the 3-19 Salem Tigers today. The game starts at 7 p.m.

Hawks fall to Edinboro, playoffs out of picture for IUP

This holiday weekend brought disappointment.

Perhaps the toughest thing to accept is just how fast things have gone downhill for the Crimson Hawks.

Just three short weeks ago, IUP football had appeared to be peaking towards a NCAA playoff berth and conference championship following a monumental road upset against Slippery Rock.

Immediately following that moment, IUP unfortunately lost its way in recent games.

Indiana was defeated by a 1-6

Edinboro Fighting Scots football team this past weekend by a score of 21-17 that marked the second straight home loss for head coach Paul Tortorella and his team.

The loss will all but certainly be the dagger in an unsuccessful 2021 playoff push.

IUP trailed for much of the game while in dire circumstances.

About halfway through the opening quarter of play, Edinboro capitalized on special teams by blocking an IUP punt and returning it for a touchdown.

Tyler Luther (freshman, cyber security) converted on two straight field goals for the Crimson Hawks, and the Hawks went into the locker room at halftime trailing 7-6.

The offense, led by Harry Woodbery (graduate student, business administration), responded to open the second half.

Daquan Green (senior, unclassified) was on the receiving end of a touchdown that ultimately put IUP back in the lead at 14-7.

The defense was unable to get off the field.

Edinboro struck right back with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Bernard on the very next drive.

It was 14-14 entering the fourth quarter with tensions rising.

An IUP offense that failed to convert throughout the afternoon was again forced to settle for three

instead of seven when it sent Luther back on the field.

With a 17-14 advantage in the final quarter, IUP looked to close things out.

Edinboro put an end to that idea on a deflating offensive drive that spanned 15 plays and resulted in a game-winning touchdown all while draining seven minutes off the clock.

IUP attempted a last-minute comeback drive that saw them convert on fourth down once with the season on the line, but not twice.

Woodbery had a relatively quiet day throwing for 200 yards and a touchdown.

nior, business management) went off rushing for 147 yards but was unable to find the endzone.

Edinboro was able to eliminate Duane Brown (redshirt junior, sports administration) who totaled only 35 yards on the day.

On defense, Connor Kelly (redshirt junior, marketing) led the unit in the Hawks’ final home game with eight tackles.

Edinboro totaled just 232 yards of total offense.

IUP won the time of possession and total yardage battles but still fell short.

The loss knocks the team out of the top seven regional rankings debate.

Although playoffs are not in IUP’s future, the Crimson Hawks will look to continue to grow through experience in their final two games of the season.

IUP will travel to Seton Hill this weekend and then West Chester the following weekend.

The ball will be kicked off at noon this Saturday at Seton Hill.

Men’s basketball team battles in close exhibition against Fighting Illini MATT GLOVER

(IUP Athleitcs) In recent years IUP has exhibitioned against Kentucky, Villanova, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, South Florida, Michigan State, La Salle, Maryland, Florida State and Georgia Tech.

IUP men’s basketball gave the Division I No. 11 Illinois a run for its money Friday as it dropped its preseason opening exhibition 94-79.

“They fought hard, they played with toughness and they took it to them,” assistant coach Ron Fudala said. “They didn’t change their game just because they were playing Illinois.”

IUP had the lead seven times in the first half and entered halftime just seven points behind the Big 10 powerhouse.

The Crimson Hawks were down further early in the second half but got it close again with a 14-7 run.

It even seemed they had Illinois on the run near the end.

“We talked about forcing Illinois to call a timeout, and we accomplished that goal with 17 minutes left to go in the second half,” Fudala said. “We went on a run, and that’s something we talked about in the locker room. Taking it to them and making them call the first timeout.

“I was proud we could accomplish that goal.”

It was 68-63 with less than nine minutes left on the clock.

Guard Shawndale Jones (redshirt senior, communications media) scored 25 points shooting 1018 from the floor and 5-7 at the foul line. He also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal. He was one of four Hawks to score in the double digits.

Point guard Dave Morris (junior, kinesiology, health and sport science) shot 5-11 scoring 15 points with seven rebounds and five assists.

Guard Armoni Foster (junior, criminology/criminal justice) scored 13 points in 17 minutes.

Forward Ethan Porterfield (sophomore, criminology and criminal justice) scored 10 points

with five rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

IUP competed against Gannon and Clarion going 2-1 before its 2020-2021 season was canceled due to COVID-19, but the team went 28-2 winning the 2020 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships the previous season.

Illinois did have a 2020-2021 season and went 24-7. IUP was its second opponent this season.

Despite the loss, IUP was picked by the Preseason Coaches’ Poll to win the PSAC West for the sixth straight year and ranked 18th in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II preseason poll.

The Hawks also have three starters returning from the 2020 PSAC Champion squad.

All-region honoree and previous All-America Selections (AAS) Foster lead the Crimson Hawks in the 2019-2020 season with 19.8 points per game, 51 three-pointers and a 49.6 shooting percentage.

Porterfield, the 2020 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, averaged 10.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Morris averaged 9.5 points and four assists per game.

Jones, the 2020 PSAC Tournament MVP, is also back along with Tommy Demogerontas (redshirt fifth year, business) who led the team in scoring and rebounds in the four games before he was injured.

The Hawks will also have 10 new players join them this season including three who were redshirted in the 2019-2020 season.

A redshirt means the player can save a year of eligibility and practice with the team but cannot compete against any outside competition.

IUP will open its regular season Nov. 12 against West Virginia Wesleyan at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

“Expect a team that’s fun to watch, that cares for each other and plays as a unit,” Fudala said.

“I’m excited for us.

IUP basketball is back in season

Women’s basketball team takes on Villanova in exhibition game to start season MATT GLOVER

Lead Sports Writer htpz@iup.edu @ThePennIUP IUP women’s basketball opened its preseason Saturday with an exhibition against Big East opponent Villanova losing 44-93.

“The first couple games teach us as a staff what we haven’t emphasized enough yet and what habits we haven’t created in our team,” head coach Tom McConnell said.

Justina Mascaro (redshirt senior, finance and economics) had team highs of 14 points with half of them coming in the fourth quarter and six rebounds.

Courtney Alexander (redshirt senior, nursing) scored eight points with three field goals made: two of them from threepoint range.

Villanova outshot the team 51.4 percent to 31.3 percent including a .368 to .222 three-point percentage. IUP came out with some things to work on.

“We thought we gave up too many open shots in transition and then blocking out,” McConnell said. “That’ll be a point of emphasis for us moving forward on the defensive end.

“Offensively, Villanova gave us some problems pressing us a little bit, so we will work harder in the days and weeks ahead in that area.”

Twelve Crimson Hawks entered the game as the team competed for the first time since March 2020 when it finished 28-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The 20202021 season was canceled due to COVID-19.

Mascaro is one of three returning starters from the 2019-2020 season.

She led the team at guard that season with 14.2 points per game, hitting 52.8 percent of her field goal attempts, 43.3 percent of her three-point shots and 76.8 of her foul shots.

The other returning starters include Alexander and Maura

D’Anna (redshirt senior, physical education) along with six other players.

Alexander averaged 8.8 points per game shooting a 40.1 percent from a three-point range in the 2019-2020 season. D’Anna averaged 6.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Villanova, however, had a 20202021 season and finished 17-7.

“The way I see it, it’s part of the learning process,” assistant coach Lexi Griggs said. “The girls need tougher competition and to find their rhythm, chemistry and identity as a team.”

“Regardless of the score, we continued to fight and play hard for 40 minutes,” McConnell said. “The execution wasn’t always where we wanted it, but it got better as the game went on and we were able to settle in and get rid of some of the nerves.”

Despite this loss, the Crimson Hawks were picked to finish second in the PSAC West in the preseason coaches’ poll. They tied with Gannon to finish first, but Gannon had more second-place votes and took the top spot.

“It’s a new team, and we have to find our identity out there,” Griggs said. “Each game will be holding and owning that while we’re out there.”

The team will next take the court Friday at Dayton for its second exhibition before beginning the regular season Nov. 13 against Virginia State.

“We want to grow and get better every single time we take the floor,” McConnell said. “It gives us a focus of where we need to pour attention to this week as we prepare for our trip to Dayton.

We’ll come out of that game with a few other things where we need to grow.”

“It’s a marathon; it’s not a sprint,” Griggs said. “We are here to get better each and every day.

The game we played doesn’t define us. It only makes us redefine our focus on our vision.”
